After the recent hurricane, our typical Chinese food spot closed due to damage. We were forced to look elsewhere and landed here at the China Star after seeing the good reviews. We are extremely happy we found such a solid Chinese food place. The menu options at these type of restaurants seem pretty standardized, and so it may not really stand out in that regard. However, their food was well cooked and delicious. Typical portion sizes at perhaps slightly lower than average prices make this a very solid choice for Chinese takeout. In short, it delivers on all you're looking for when you want this kind of Chinese take out meal. We will be back. Bonuses to this place: apparently they deliver, the restaurant is quite large for a primarily takeout place, and the place seemed cleaner than some I've been to before. FINALLY found a local Chinese place that makes egg foo young gravy correctly! None of that super sweet packaged gravy. This stuff is the real deal! I've been in love with egg foo young since I worked in the grocery store in this plaza, when it was IGA. The Chinese restaurant was across the street and my family fell in love with it. Disappointed with the amount of meat that is in their meals. Food is tasty, but needs more protein. The meat in hot and spicy beef and chicken chop suey is chopped so fine you can't taste it. It is mostly vegetables. Don't cut corner your one of the few in Dunedin that is good. read more

If you like anything with chicken do not go here! The sesame chicken has no chicken inside the breading. Let's not even mention always forgetting sauces to go with your meal; the lady taking orders will hang up on you when you call to discuss your issue. We tried to return all our food after showing the second driver the chicken problem, he continued to touch our other order with his hands. She still didn't want to refund. This place is gross inside also as we were forced to go to their location to demand a refund in writing. She still tried to charge for delivery and tip! Don't worry she didn't win. It's hard to find a decent Chinese takeout in Dunedin. China star seems to be the best I've found. The problem I have with China star is I don't find them to be consistent. One day the general tsaos chicken is crispy and delicious and the next day it's soggy. Another issue I have with this takeout restaurant is the rice. The fried rice is not great. Its a bit tasteless. It has very little vegetables in it and if you order a specific rice such as beef or chicken it's hardly worth it because there's very little meat in the rice so you really can't taste it. I love fried rice so that's a big disappointment for me. Having said that, the restaurant is clean and the people are lovely. Delivery is quick. The food is basically tasty, unfortunately like I said it's just not consistent. But it's the best around. The portions are generous and the prices are the same as anywhere else. If they were more consistent and had good rice I'd give it 5 stars. read more

Tried to order from this establishment. While waiting for them to enter in my address, I could hear them talking about my nieghborhood. The woman said that I live in a terrible neighborhood and she doesn't want to deliver. After listening to her belittle my address for a minute, she picked back up the phone and said I live too far. Walked in for takeout. Staff was courteous and eager to help. Our order was ready in about 15 minutes. Chicken fried rice, shrimp lo mein, sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls and crab rangoon were all perfect. Priced very reasonably. Got carryout here in Dunedin for the past five years monthly. All good. Two visits ago the so-called scallops turned out to be fake - cheap white fish cut to look like scallops. This past visit ordered Mongolian Beef. There was at least three measured cups of cut up scallions in it. Truly an unbelievable amount but very small amount of beef. The dish was inedible. The house lo mein was so salty as to render it also inedible. We went to return both only to be ridiculed for ordering the wrong items. No resolution. Goodbye China Star. read more

I have tried many Chinese Restaurants in the area before I went to this one tonight. It was a clean & busy place, which tells me they are doing something right. My phone order was ready in 15min like they said. I got home with it and couldn't believe the portions. We got two shrimp combo plates. Both were full of large shrimp and the flavor of the sauce was great! There was enough food in each for another meal. This is my new place to go for Chinese food in Dunedin. read more

The food was ok bordering not good. The orange chicken was fried too hard or did not have large enough pieces of chicken inside because many of them were just tough fried dough. The food was not greasy which is good but it was a bit bland. The restaurant looked clean. I don't plan to return. read more

If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant that's quick, low cost and has good flavor, China Star is just that! I ordered the Sweet & Sour Shrimp & the portion was large and not over fried like some places tend to cook the breading. The crab wontons were a little sparse on the filling, but nonetheless the flavor was there with a again a big portion for the low price. Nothing fancy but a big "bang for your buck!". read more

my wife and I went there and found the shop to be without AC . irregardless we decided to eat. that wasn't the problem. the food was tasteless, bland, and uneatable. we ordered fried rice YUCK pork egg foo young, less taste than cardboard, the brown gravy was like brown water. we asked for salt, and there wasn't a shaker in the building. the tea I ordered , came in the form of a lipton tea bag, not olong. the packaged soy sauce was even tasteless. I read several reviews about this restaurant before I visited and ordered a very standard dish, General Tao's Chicken. The place was very clean and the staff was friendly. You could see through to the back of the kitchen, and it appeared to be a clean and efficient operation. Many other reviewers have said that the dishes are tasty. I found that to be true, but my main complaint, and the reason for the 3-star rating, is that the quality of the meat was so-so. The "chicken" bits in the GTC were typical size, but there was very little meat. It was difficult to identify what was used to construct these bits. They were crunchy on some sides, and not on others. I'll stop there with the food description. As I have discovered in over 20 years of living in the Tampa Bay Area, what people consider as "Good Chinese Food" really varies. Having just moved, we were on the hunt for a local Chinese restaurant. This is the only one we tried, and I don't believe we will be going anywhere else. The crab rangoon is excellent, and the vegetable fried rice is out of this world. It is FULL of vegetables, not just frozen peas. Broccoli, cabbage, snow peas, etc. Lots of vegetarian options and they are willing to work with you by changing up sauces in dishes and such.
