Food is usually good, but I was craving chow mein (supposed to be similar to lo mein but dry by comparison and firmer noodles) I like my noodles firm so I ordered the chow mein instead of the lo mein. What I got was some nasty tasting soup, not a noodle in sight except for a bag of dried out stuff you would put on a salad. Looked more like chop suey! (Which I don't think is even on their menu here!) Google chow mein and what do you get? Noodles! Search for what chow mein means in english and what do you get? "Stir-fried noodles"! From what I can find online, chow mein is noodles everywhere but the east coast of the USA, where it is randomly replaced by soup! Guess I've been lucky so far because I have lived all my life in this state and every time I've had chow mein it's been noodles and I've always preferred it over lo mein. I was so happy to finally find good Chinese food since moving here from NJ. My usual order is Wonton soup, pork egg rolls, pork fried rice, and Singapore Mei Fun. In the beginning it was fabulous. Unfortunately the Singapore Mei Fun has gone down hill over the last 2 years. I keep ordering it hoping it was just an off night but I can see now that's not the case. The curry spice mix is off, or lacking in flavor & heat or just hot no flavor. The seasoning on the noodles is lacking oil and rather dry. The meats in the dish are generally ok but again lacking the correct flavor. It not a cheap dish so it's really upsetting when you get it home and find you don't want to eat it. And No, I haven't lost my taste due to Covid. I have resigned myself to only ordering my basic comfort foods from here now. So far so good until tonight. ...pork fried rice - perfect & fresh, Wonton soup - great too, but my egg rolls were undercooked and flavorless. Where's the pork??? There was a time when I came a great distance to pick up great Chinese food from 99 but that time and come and gone! There are raw boards holding up something so ambiance- NOT! Service- It looked like they were disappointed I stopped in. I ordered Egg Foo Yung. $11.18*- They never explained fried rice was .50 more. I'm used to Egg Foo Yung with a brown gravy not sugary but salty. This came with a purple-ish sweet gravy/terriyaki style. Setting it aside I tasted the Egg Foo Yung... The bean sprouts were water soaked and limp, the pork was dry, dark, and hard. The egg patty was heavy and not fluffy and fried. Seemed water logged? the onions were also wimpy, stringy, and grey? There was ABSOLUTELY no seasoning, none, nada, zilch. So can you mess up white rice? It was stuck together in clumps. The kitchen is poorly lit. All told- they don't really want your business. Usually I would never order from a Chinese food restaurant without actually seeing how clean the location is, but I am glad I took a chance with China 99. So far everything I've tried off of their menu has been excellent, and did I mention they offer delivery? I started to give this place 5 stars but remembered how the delivery driver caught an attitude after I asked for my change back from my order. I had plans on giving him a bigger tip but needed the singles and coins for laundry that day. He opened his wallet and only gave me 2 of the 5 dollars and change he owed me and proceeded to stomp away from my door. I would say this is the best Chinese take-out place in Clearwater. I have tried a couple in the area but this place is much better than others. We had lunch combination plates delivered. A little bit of trouble ordering over the phone but we got what we wanted. The portion is gigantic!! One lunch plate is like for 2 people. If you order a plate with meat in it, they will put meat in your plate. Not like the place across the street. They don't give you fried chicken with no chicken and just batter and sauce. I have been a loyal customer of China 99 for a minimum of 5 or 6 years. The last time I placed an order (approximately one month ago), we all noticed that the chicken within our quart of Chicken and Brocoli was very sour. It tasted spoiled. Since we purchased two quarts, we tasted the second quart and it was also sour. So I contacted the restaurant and spoke to the lady owner of the restaurant. I told her the chicken was sour and she said to bring it back. The food items had been delivered by her husband less than 15 minutes prior to the call. I brought the items back to the restaurant and asked her to try it and she agreed that the item did not taste fresh. She was apologetic and instead of having the item replaced, I asked for a refund for the entrees. Keep in mind, this was only two of the six or so entrees we ordered. Tonight we decided to order from this restaurant and after placing the order, the male owner of the business made a comment to my son about not returning any more food. When I was told about his comment I called him and told him to cancel the order. I always enjoyed the food at this restaurant and we have been patrons who spent at least $70 every time we ordered and more than $100 on special occasions, but I refuse to do business with any owner who has no interest in their customer's satisfaction especially when the owner is aware of our long term status as a good customer. No more for China 99, I'll look for the 98 restaurants before them. I have ordered here before and not been satisfied, but today was the last straw. My wife is sick with a sore throat & cough. Whenever she gets sick, she always wants Hot & Sour Soup. I ordered this for her along with about 5 other dishes from the dinner menu (Total bill was over $50). I ordered all of them extra spicy. Needless to say, my 1 star rating shows that I was very disappointed. Reason 1: NO SPICE AT ALL! Everything was bland, especially the HOT & Sour Soup. My wife was totally disappointed. Reason 2: I ordered from the dinner menu on their website and everything came as a "Dinner Combo", which means that half of the container was filled with rice. I called the restaurant to complain and the lady who answered said she was sorry, but nothing about making it better or even sounding like she cared. I have been ordering here about once a month for 4 years now. I have never had a bad experience, the food is always great & fresh. The owners are always very friendly and speak English very well. I was shocked to read the disgusting review that Nick gave. They are very clean and always cleaning. I think her name is Lisa and I have had many conversations with her...she does not come across as a nasty person. Nick must own one of the other restaurants in this shopping center and by giving bad reviews on yelp he takes away business from others so that he can gain it for himself. Please read before eating there! I went there to pick up lunch today. I had eaten there once recently and hated the meat (it was tough and rubbery and a bit questionable) but I liked the egg rolls. As I sat in my car out front waiting for my egg rolls, an employee who was sitting inside eating lunch walked outside coughing (she had a greasy apron on so I assume she is a cook). Just as I was thinking, "I hope she doesn't have TB" she hocked up something large and green, and half caught it before it landed on the ground. Just a few feet away I sat in horror, as she then placed a finger on one nostril and blew a snot rocket that would have made any cowboy envious, straight into the parking lot. In my line of profession I deal with some pretty gross stuff, but this, this was bad! I instantly felt sick and should have just driven off at that point. But I waited, expecting to watch her go into the bathroom and hopefully wash her hands but instead she sat back down to eat. I went inside and I was going to say something but I was in such shock. I grabbed my bag of food and as I walked out she walked behind the counter back into the kitchen. She never washed her hands!! My food went immediately into the trash as soon as I got home. I can honestly say I have lost my appetite for any Chinese food, forever! There is ignorance, then there is just down-right dirty stuff. There is no excuse for not washing your hands after catching sputum from your mouth, then blowing snot out of your nose like a blowhole. The fact that she did this outside, in daylight with people sitting on the porch next to her raises serious concerns for what she does when no one is looking. Infectious diseases are easily spread through blatant carelessness like hers, and I will definitely be reporting this to the health department. So, now you have been forewarned. We had the Mongolian Chicken which was a pint of onion slices in brown sauce. I counted one piece of chicken it in. They forgot our egg rolls but loaded us down with fortune cookies. I had the curry chicken and it was good - great flavor, juicy chicken. It's your standard American Chinese food, but as such, the quality of it always depends on 1) the ingredients and 2) the skill of the cook. You can peer back in the kitchen and see the owner cooking in his giant wok and he knows how to use it. It's worth checking out if you want some comfortable Chinese food.
