Full order of the special chow mein

Let me start by saying this is not a reflection of our waitresses, they were great. They stayed calm, professional, and kind throughout a situation. We came here to celebrate my son's birthday. He loves chow mein, so we ordered a bunch of dishes thinking the portions would be similar to every other Chinese restaurant, family-style or at least sharable. What we got was shockingly small for what we paid. The chow mein plate alone was $16 and barely enough to feed one person. When we asked about the portion size, the waitress (again, doing her best) took it to the kitchen. She came back and told us the cook refused to make more or fix the dish because he was overwhelmed. Seriously? We're paying $16-$20 per plate, and the response is "too bad"? At first, they only offered $5 off the chow mein, which felt like a slap in the face, but eventually, they did take it off the bill entirely. Which we appreciated. We ordered five entrees and two appetizers for two adults and three kids, and it was barely enough food. We left frustrated, and honestly a little embarrassed because we were trying to celebrate a special occasion. Again, the service was the only thing that saved this from being a one-star review. But unless something changes with the kitchen and portion sizes, we won't be back. It's just not worth the price.

I really liked china palace! Not gonna lie looked a little skeptical from the outside but food was 10/10. My boyfriend grew up coming here and it's one of his favorite restaurants. Maybe not the most authentic Chinese food but definitely taste good!

Omg fantastic food. I have looked for Beef Tomato Chow Mien for nearly 30 years to no avail. But lo and behold they had it. It was great. All food was fantastic. We visited twice over three days.

The vibe from the waitress told us she didn't want to be there. We were barely greeted and shown a table to sit down at. We barely had seen the menu when she came by and asked us about drinks and appetizers. We asked for two glasses of ice tea and said we needed more time to look at the menu. When she came back to take our order, we still hadn't received our ice teas. She even brought us our cups of soup before the teas. Since we weren't provided water when we sat down, we waited 15 minutes to get the teas. My wife ordered a sweet and sour chicken dish and I ordered Kung pan chicken. When they arrived, they looked almost identical: deep-fried chicken in a sweet sauce. Only Kristy's dish had some slices of bell pepper, while mine had a piece of raw broccoli and some dried chiles. Tasting mine, it was definitely sweet and sour. When the waitress came around I asked if that dish was really Kung pao chicken and she assured me it was. I said the sauce was sweet and the chicken was deep-fried and was unlike any Kung pan chicken I'd ever had. She told me she would trade it out, although I was unsure what she was going to replace it with, since she had insisted that what I had received truly was Kung pao chicken. She returned a few minutes later and said the chef had made a mistake and was making the correct dish for me. It came out and was fine. But what bothered me is the server just assumed she had brought me the proper dish to begin with. If she had simply looked at it and agreed it looked nearly identical to Kristy's sweet and sour dish, she would have easily concluded a mistake had been made. Which I would have understood. Instead, she didn't believe my explanation of why it was the wrong dish. If I was the chef in the kitchen, I would have brought the corrected dish out to the customer myself and apologized personally. He took the easy way out by putting it on his waitress. This is a restaurant we love and have spoken to the owner before. We will go there again, but this was a very disappointing experience.

My daughter ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken with Jasmin Rice and I had the Chicken LoMien. We also had the Hot and Sour soup. Everything was so fresh tasting, with fresh vegetables. The servings were huge and we ended up taking home a lot of food. The service was fast and our server was so friendly. The menu is also like a book. So many things to pick from. If you enjoy Chinese/American food I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant. We will certainly be back again.

My favorite Thai soup is Tom Ka Gai so I'm a bit of a snob about it; their version does not disappoint! The Pad Kee Mao (drunken noodles) are exceptional with authentic Thai flavors and the perfect level of spice. They are also happy to adjust the spice levels to your taste. Their house Chardonnay was quite good for an affordable wine. Every table had fresh flowers which was a charming touch. I will definitely return again and again.

She also speaks Chinese to whomever is doing the cooking in the kitchen behind her that diners can't see into through the high open widow space into it but one can hear the sounds of cooking and Chinese being spoken. In that exchange it is also friendly and maybe even familial. In my book it is the delightful attitude that adds the extra star to rating. And as much as local people are boo-hooing about the closure in this calendar year (2025) of a number of long time Chinese food restaurants in the greater Treasure Valley, from Middleton to Nampa to Garden City and Boise, it seems they want to be super critical of the true little mom-n-pop places like this. Just saying. THE FOOD: This Cantonese - Mandarin menu is structured to appeal to American palates for diners who think Orange Chicken or General Tsao's are real things. That isn't my husband and me given we have been able to enjoy some extraordinary Chinese cuisine via Chinatowns in NYC and SF when we lived there and in Portland (OR) too when there was briefly a restaurant with Xinjiang dishes. But even for us there are things here to appreciate (although, as with all Chinese food places where we do not know the owners personally, we focus on vegetarian options) and if one is looking for Chinese food to take away, one can do a lot worse than this. Dishes (rice included) are generously sized and are in the $12 - 14 range. Noodle dishes maybe around $12. THE SPACE & SEATING: If you are planning to go for the first time, you need to know the space is very small, a handful of booths split between both sides of the room, and a round table in the middle. Also, because it is small, they are going to occasionally have things like bags of rice and other supplies stacked on the floor outside the kitchen. For that reason I am unable to report if the loo is unisex or not because I couldn't get to it on the only eat-in visit because of the supplies that had just been delivered and stacked in the way. And on that note, in the vein of everything being connected to everything else, the owner and delivery driver had a delightful conversation as if they were old friends through this connection of supplier and owner. Our preference here is take-out and we note there seems to be a brisk business for them in that. PARKING: This is a sort of old time Western town themed strip mall in Star (which at one time may have been thought of as that kind of town but which has been gentrified of late by out of state - read California homebuyers) and it has a parking lot. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking in the lot. The round table seating might work for a wheelchair user but I didn't look at it closely. Other than that, booth seating. WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?: Right next door you will find Sea Salt Creamery + Bakeshop where the owner crafts outrageously good small batch ice cream and also does baking of delicious things from cookies to handpies to cakes to... See reviews for this biz too and do not miss it to pick up dessert to take home with your to-go Chinese food dinner.
