Finally got the chance to stop into Mala House today. I have a couple clients who love this little joint. They are fond of the hot pot that they have here. I wasn't is the mood for hot pot so I just checked out their lunch menu. Walking into the joint, it's very colorful and vibrant. I love all the fun decor, light fixtures and fun flags that they have. It's pretty spacious for a smaller venue. The big windows in the front give it so much lighting. I appreciate all the happy money cats everywhere. Adds such a fun vibe to the place. I didn't catch my servers name today but he got me sat. I looked over the lunch menu, asked a couple questions about some possible alterations to my food but it was a no go. I have had twice cooked pork with chicken before at other places but this option wasn't available. So, I opted for chicken and brocolli with steamed rice today. I got served some tomato and egg soup as a starter. It was thick and rich in tomato. It had smaller pieces of egg in it, bigger chunks would have been better. I grew up on tomato and egg soup so it was comforting having a bowl of it. Brought me back to my youth, it was nice. Lunch came out shortly. Woooww, it was a beautiful plate. You get a nice helping of rice. It's amazing how many Chinese joints give such little rice with your meal. Not here! It was a great amount. The brocolli was bigger pieces. It was on the harder side but fresh. I appreciate the amount of sauce that came with my stir fry. Sauce and steamed rice together is the best bite! The chicken wasn't velveted so it was a little dry. The egg rolls were sitting in the sauce so it caused the egg rolls to sog up a bit. The middle of it was also really mushy so it wasn't the best bite. I ate half of one and didn't really care to finish the rest. I can see why my clients really like this place. It's bright, they push out good food and the service was decent. I did notice that there were quite a few staff members but none of them would help the server. He was hustling the front register, phone orders, table orders, sitting customers, bringing food out. I just find it crazy that non of them helped out. I'm happy I got to try the this joint out today. I did enjoy my chicken and brocolli. The prices for lunch aren't bad and the portions are good! I'll have to try their general's chicken the next time I come. You can never go wrong with general's chicken. Hopefully my next visit will be sooner than later.

Horrible. Placed an online order and ordered sesame chicken and sweet & sour. They gave me two orders of sweet & sour chicken but put sesame seeds on one. Both were soggy. The broccoli beef was inedible. SO salty and just tasted off. Ordered an order of the "eggrolls" but received 3 vegetable spring rolls that were from the freezer. Slimy, and awful. The fried rice was bland and oily. Potstickers tasted like they were made hours before we ordered them. Paid $90 for an inedible meal. Tried calling the business to talk to them about it and try to find a resolution but they wouldn't answer the phone and their voicemail was full. Will be disputing the charge.

We went around March and immediately loved the decor. Service was kind and was great at answering our questions on certain dishes of the menu. We absolutely love the crawfish so far. You can tell it's fresh and the sauce is addicting. Hot pot was a fun dish to do with others. You do need to gradually add toppings and seasoning as you eat to create a more umami taste for some of the broth. Overall the two person choice did fill us up. We hope they can change some of the fish balls out since it seems majority is filled up with those. Possibly consider other proteins or toppings. We also felt like the room felt a bit warm due to all the hotpot steam so possibly increasing the AC might help or upgrading to vent fans later on especially for the summer

Beautiful interior. Food is fantastic! We didn't understand it was family style. So we didn't order correctly and we ordered too much. It's probably best to ask for guidance. Anyhow, we will definitely be back especially now that we understand how it works.

My partner and I love spicy food with great flavor, and this is the place for it! As someone who is from California where there is a lot of great Asian food spots, Mala House would blend right in with that high quality food scene. We ordered the spicy mala fried fish, and it was a revelation. The fish was perfectly crispy, and the mala spice provided that incredible numbing, fiery kick we crave, balanced beautifully with savory notes. We also ordered hot pot combo A, which was a fun experience. The broth was rich and deeply flavorful, and the fresh ingredients absorbed all that deliciousness. Every bite was a burst of complex spice and exquisite taste. The combo comes with three broth varieties, szechuan, tomato, and chicken. We ended up ordering two szechuan broths in our combo since we love all things spicy. We also ordered the grilled cumin fish which is only $40 and lasted us many meals. The fish was soft and flavorful, and there's no other place in Boise where you can get that same quantity of high quality fish for that price. If you love authentic Szechuan cuisine and can handle the heat, Mala House is an absolute must-try. We're already planning our next visit!

Ordered the fatty beef golden soup...look at how they fill it. Really Mala House? Keep your food and portions consistent.

Our server, MJ, did a really great job taking care of us. She was nice, friendly, helpful, and attentive. Our daughter had the Unicorn sushi roll with a side of edamame, my wife had a bowl of clam chowder and the shrimp scampi, and I had the fish and chips (cod; they also offer salmon and halibut, but the halibut, which I would have liked, was double the price at $38). For dessert, we shared the key lime pie. My wife said the clam chowder was OK, but more potatoes than clams. She did like her scampi. Our daughter liked the sushi roll. And, I liked the beer battered cod with the tartar sauce, and their fries were nicely seasoned and fairly crispy ( a little crispier would have been nice). The key lime pie had a rougher texture; I like it more creamy. Still good, though. I liked the exterior of the building. Red brick, arched windows that have a Mediterranean feel, and an exterior staircase that gives a bit of an industrial vibe. I thought it would be a little more upscale inside, but it is more basic wood tables and booths. There is a patio area, and it looks like there is an upstairs patio or dining area as well. All in all, a good first experience. We will definitely return.

The restaurant was pretty empty, yet our party of six was seated right next to a banquet room hosting what can only be described as a full-blown work party. Between the noise and our waiter speaking loudly and very slowly (think Disneyland character energy), it was tough to tell if he was competing with the party or assuming we were hard of hearing (we are all in our early 50's). Either way, it made conversation... challenging. The food was good and the oysters were amazing, but discussing business over what felt like a live soundtrack wasn't ideal. The waiter even joked about closing the banquet room door because "those folks know how to party," then promptly did nothing about it. As the group finally wrapped up, one guy actually apologized for interrupting our dinner -- which kind of said it all. We'll definitely try a quieter spot next time we're entertaining clients.

While the price point here is higher than a typical date night for us, our experiences have always been worth the price tag. The staff is attentive and offers great recommendations. The table side guacamole is a must. So good and they tailor it to your requested spice level. Be warned, it is enough guac to feed a table of 6. So good. The Firerock entree is a crowd pleaser, and tastes amazing. You can't beat the experience of it getting flambéed at your table. I've also tried various cocktails and have never been disappointed. They serve their martinis in an ice glass (yes the glass is made of 100% ice). The presentation is so fun. This is definitely our go to for special date nights.

Reservations are strongly recommended especially the weekend, but usually for the nicer months, most people go for the patio so reservations are mandatory for that. Indoors were pretty empty so you can probably get away with walking in, but for peace of mind, I would recommend a reservation. We went on a Saturday during mid May so people were celebrating Mother's Day and graduation, so we had to make a reservation a month in advance for that dinner service. We got the BBQ duck quesadilla, tableside guacamole, and the signature hot rock filet with a side of zucchini chips sprinkled with cheese. This was more than enough for 2 people as every dish is huge. The quesadilla is delicious, with a good amount of duck. Kind of similar experience to a BBQ chicken quesadilla, but fancier. Tableside guacamole is good - lots of guac but since we were seated outside with a beautiful lake view directly, there were steps so it was not possible to see the guacamole prepared tableside. The server should have mentioned it as we wanted to see the preparation, and we were never informed as such so the premium for the appetizer was not as worthwhile. The hot rock filet was good. I loved the fire show when they pour the mix of cognac peppercorn sauce. The steak was incredibly high quality - really juicy and not much tendon. This is the type of steak I have been seeking in many restaurants that fail to deliver. The zucchini chips side was good, a little flimsy on the batter, but nonetheless satisfying. We got cocktails that were icetinis - a glass with an ice shaped like the glass. They pour a small portion of the drink on the glass and left the rest in the cocktail shaker for us to pour gradually so that the drink is not as diluted, which is a good touch. Service can be improved - I understand the server is fairly new but there should be a minimal amount of experience to serve at such a high end restaurant? Some big misses I had were not giving shared plates until we asked, covering a bit of the show with the arm when pouring the fire cognac, and when requesting the check, he took a pause to place the receipt at the table but failed to see that he placed the check on top of some guac we dropped at the table so my credit cards after payment were incredibly sticky and oily. If people are dropping hundreds for a nice experience, I expected service to be better than that.
