After countless places that just didn't quite hit the mark, we're thrilled to say: we finally found it at China Palace! We've driven past this little gem countless times while heading down old State Street, always remarking, "We've really got to try that place someday." Well, last night, someday finally came--and we're so glad it did. From the moment we walked in, it felt like stepping back in time in the best way possible. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with that nostalgic charm you just don't find much anymore. The menu had all the classics we were hoping for, and everything we ordered was absolutely delicious--full of flavor, perfectly cooked, and served in generous, hearty portions that left us with leftovers for the next day (which we're not complaining about!). What truly elevated our experience, though, was the service. Rebecca took care of us, and she was phenomenal--friendly, attentive, and genuinely made us feel right at home. It's rare these days to find that kind of thoughtful, personal service, and it made a great meal even better. Let me start by saying this is not a reflection of our waitresses,they were great. They stayed calm, professional, and kind throughout a situation. We came here to celebrate my son's birthday. He loves chow mein, so we ordered a bunch of dishes thinking the portions would be similar to every other Chinese restaurant, family-style or at least sharable. What we got was shockingly small for what we paid. The chow mein plate alone was $16 and barely enough to feed one person. When we asked about the portion size, the waitress (again, doing her best) took it to the kitchen. She came back and told us the cook refused to make more or fix the dish because he was overwhelmed. Seriously? We're paying $16-$20 per plate, and the response is "too bad"? At first, they only offered $5 off the chow mein, which felt like a slap in the face, but eventually, they did take it off the bill entirely. Which we appreciated. We ordered five entrees and two appetizers for two adults and three kids, and it was barely enough food. We left frustrated, and honestly a little embarrassed because we were trying to celebrate a special occasion. Again, the service was the only thing that saved this from being a one-star review. But unless something changes with the kitchen and portion sizes, we won't be back. It's just not worth the price. read more

I honestly don't understand why anyone would rate this place less than five stars. It's exactly what a Chinese restaurant should be--no-frills atmosphere, good service, and amazing food. The food here was amazing! I had the combo plate with chow mein, egg foo young, and an egg roll, while my wife got rice, sweet and sour pork, and fried wontons. Everything was spot on--exactly what you want from classic, old-school Chinese food. I've been searching all over the Treasure Valley for a decent Chinese restaurant and finally stumbled onto China Palace. This is a takeout review. Tried for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised with the order. Got the hot & sour soup, pork chow mein, and garlic chicken with white rice. Each dish was well crafted and tasty. Asked for the chicken to be extra spicy and it was nice. The order was ready and hot when they said it would be. The packaging of each dish was good for travel and they took the extra care to use a cardboard box to secure it for the car trip. Their historical food inspections have been up and down, which signaled me that it was a good place. Chinese food places chronically get dinged during food inspections around the world. It is a badge of honor. Definitely going to explore more of the menu. read more

I'm on the hunt for a good hot and sour soup in this city. I think I may have found it! The hot and sour soup was flavorful with a great amount of heat. So good. The only disappointing part was there was hardly any bamboo shoots, tofu, carrots. I'll have to add extra bamboo next time. We also ordered the chow fun. It was alright, it did lack a little flavor but a little soy sauce fixed it. Overall, neat little local gem in the heart of Eagle. Looking forward to trying more items on the menu. read more

My husband was craving some Chinese food and since we live in Eagle, we thought we would give it a try. We phoned in a takeout order. They were really friendly answering questions about the food preparation. I have a shellfish allergy, so we needed to make sure they didn't use oyster oil in their fried rice. The pork fried rice did not have much pork in it and the egg rolls were tasteless and oily. I really had high hopes for this spot, but it just wasn't what I hoped for. VIBE: The interior is pleasant enough for kitschy old-style-American-idea of Chinese décor. Although it won't win any sparkle clean awards, it was passable. Appreciated there were tables and booths for seating; we choose the latter. MENU & FOOD: Extensive menu full of standard American idea of Chinese food like beef broccoli or sweet and sour this-or-that and Mongolian whatsit so if those kind of choices are your Chinese food thing you'll find lots to consider. If you like "combo plates" they offer those here too at certain times of day including lunch hour. Food quality was "B-minus-ish". Generous serving sizes but we didn't ask for a to-go box for remainder for what its' worth. SERVICE: The server was solo at our lunch time visit and while there were few diners, maybe just five, service was very slow...for water, for tea, for order taking, for food to table, for follow up on check and so on. Not unfriendly, just not efficient. TAKE OUT - NO DELIVERY: Several people came in for take out while we were there, most seemed like regulars based on the greeting received, and all talked about how they wished delivery were an option while they waited on their food. This was obviously a discussion had with the server...who also manned the take out desk...before. She said she too wished they would deliver, but the owners will not do that ever. PARKING: Small private lot in front shared with other businesses but always seems to have space available. Like many parking lots in Eagle, even ones constructed well after ADA rules like this one, the accessible parking (AKA ADA) is laid out incorrectly. That is the strip mall owner's issue not the restaurant's. ACCESSIBILITY: Level in the door and throughout. Standard height seating options. Loo would be accessible but they had stored furniture in the ladies' which makes it inaccessible for wheelchair users; against the law for 27 years now to have these barriers in place so they must know better. read more

Check this out! I'm a Chinese food lover.... This place is a Chinese/American restaurant. Menu...NO General Tao chicken!!!!! Egg rolls ..... for one order you get 2 at 5.00!!!! Price... Even though you do get a lot, if you have 5 or more people double up. Taste... ok. Egg roll a little on the greasy side and the Egg Foo Yung salty. Good location, nice environment. Won Ton Special and chow mein is great. I'd stay away from anything fried... very doughy and heavy, almost like frozen food section fried goods. I had the sweet and sour pork and walnut shrimp... both were same fried doughy-ness. The customer service is awesome. This place can get busy tho so put in your order early. read more

My wife and I moved to Eagle May, 21. We found this restaurant in downtown Eagle and decided to give it a try on a take out basis. We have had Chinese food from coast to coast. Naturally, San Francisco and New York will have extraordinary Chinese food. We have had limited exposure to the various dishes offered by China Palace, but what we can say is this: PROS: We love the Sweet and Sour Won Ton soup and can actually make a meal of that alone. No other restaurant offers this type of combination soup. We also regularly order their Special Fried Rice which can also be made into a meal all by Itself. Lastly, we have ordered the General Tso's Chicken that we always enjoy. CONS: The only dish that we have ordered that we found to be sub-par was the Sweet & Sour Pork. Chow mein that looked like spaghetti, Mongolian beef with no green onions and no spice, Kung Pao chicken that was bland with no spice, sweet and sour chicken that was all breading with very little chicken. Several local restaurants are getting a lot of love these days due to their switch to takeout during the Coronavirus pandemic (deservedly), but China Palace has always, and continues to provide an excellent takeout option in Eagle. I placed an order Friday night, April 3 and was told it would be ready in 25 minutes. This was for three entrees and soup. Sure enough, when I got there my order was ready and waiting for me. We have been to China Palace several times over the years and it has always been good, but for some reason this time it was especially delicious. I would highly recommend the double mushroom with tofu. The hot an sour soup was also very good and one order was enough for four servings.
