First, the atmosphere was dirty and uncomfortable. From the moment I walked in, the energy was off. The little man who claimed to be the manager was extremely rude--no greeting, no professionalism, and clearly irritated that I had questions. I was rushed to order, and when I asked about menu items, he was completely unhelpful and dismissive, saying everything was "popular" instead of actually answering my questions. I specifically explained that I was asking because I didn't want to have to return the food. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happened. I ordered a combination platter with General Tso's chicken, fried rice, and an egg roll. After sitting down for less than two minutes and tasting it, the food was terrible. The fried rice was bland, and the chicken didn't even resemble General Tso's--no flavor and very poor quality. I went back to the counter, politely asked for the manager, returned the food, and requested a refund. Instead of handling the situation professionally, the little man who claimed to be the manager argued with me and outright refused to refund my money--even after taking the food back. I paid $14.25 for food I could not eat and customer service that was unacceptable. I ultimately had to dispute the charge with my bank to get my money back. To be clear, I wasn't expecting anything unreasonable--I simply wanted decent food and basic customer service. I ended up going to Mama's Taste in Fairfax City, and it was chef's kiss. A family favorite located off Leesburg Pike in the same center with Trader Joe's. Parking can be limited as it is shared with the other businesses within the center. I found myself having to go to Falls Church and took the opportunity to get takeout from the China King location here. I live in western Fairfax County and have kind of been craving China King since they closed the Fairfax Towne Center location a few years ago (as well as the Herndon one!). The food is what it is: Americanized Chinese takeout. To expect something else is unreasonable. My grandparents owned a restaurant and served Americanized Chinese food. They also served full American breakfasts , hamburgers, pork chops, and a really good chicken fried steak. But that was not the Chinese food my grandmother made at home for the family. China King has been in NoVa for over 2 decades and they continue to be consistently satisfying. Also, no one goes to China King for the dine-in ambiance and service. Please don't expect it to be good. The food is what counts. I ordered hot and sour soup, twice-cooked pork, shrimp lo mein, green beans with dried tofu, and eggplant in garlic sauce. The hot and sour soup was good as usual - a little tang, a little spice, and jammed with ingredients. I think there used to be wood ear fungus in this, but apparently not any longer. This is something you should finish while it's hot during the first meal. The leftovers will be starchy and clumpy. Twice-cooked pork was also very good, with large pieces of pork and napa cabbage swimming in that dark slightly sweet, slightly spicy sauce. I think I even tasted a little bit of wok hei in this dish. The chicken fried rice is unbeatable! Generously packed with thin slices of white meat chicken, it's a tasty carb load that you can shovel into your mouth. The shrimp lo mein was fine. It had a decent amount of small shrimp and a light flavor - one that is a magnitude greater than the flavorless lo mein from Panda Express. Surprisingly, my daughter said that it wasn't oily enough. So if you want an oilier version, go to Hunan Cafe in Greenbriar Town Center. The eggplant in garlic sauce was just okay. It has a distinct tomato flavor which I'm not used to. The standard that I measure this dish against is the one from Hunan Cafe. The green beans and dried tofu was good. It also comes in that dark slightly sweet sauce. I wish there was more dried tofu in this dish - it was about 75% green beans. I think I detected a bit of wok hei here, as well. I hope China King remains in business for years to come since they fill a vital niche here in the NoVa Chinese takeout ecosystem. Realizing that I was still standing there confused on why I could not have extra, she came back and proceeded to tell me, "I already gave you some." I asked her if it was possible if I could have an extra. She rudely threw the extra spicy sauce on the counter. We've been going here for over 10 years and have overlooked a $3 overcharge here or a $4 overcharge there, figuring that we simply were not that good at math in our heads. Tonight they overcharged us by $10. I did the math on paper and the overcharge was that dramatic. The food is usually ok, they have a variety of vegetarian dishes but lately food has been bad. This lady was super rude. The other lady was trying to put our order in with the kitchen while she helped another customer on the phone. I have been to another one of their chain restaurants and it was literally the same quality of food so I'm glad they kept that consistent! The only reason I'm bumping off a star was because I felt that the Empress chicken was more of Empress rice & veggies with some chicken. In short, there wasn't that much chicken. So that was the main downside. There was also sooo much rice that was given in this dish. Reference the pictures. The orange chicken was yummy!! I'm so glad I got it! There was so much and it even came with rice! My only complaint would be that some pieces were a little hard and too dry. I have been a loyal China King Disciple for almost 20 years.  I have eaten in all locations and my meal tally is easily in the hundreds. Without any hyperbole this is the best Chinese food in the world. The portions, flavors, price and menu is second to none. The only negative thing I can say is that this will ruin all other Chinese restaurants for you. Very sad that many of the branches seem to be closing- I may need to step in and invest to keep them going (not a rich man but can't imagine life without this chinese food!). The lo mein, fried rice, KUNG PAO are incredible but I have yet to have a bad item on the menu. Everyone I take there is always skeptical about my praises but leaves a believer.
