Hunan Express phone number and lunch menu. 12/25/2025

I have been to all the Chinese restaurants in the McLean (22101) zip code and this place has the best kung pao chicken. Parking is free though has only two tables but quick access to the front door for pick-ups. They also deliver. 703/ 821-9000

Wow! I was impressed with this Chinese food establishment in McLean. Looking for Chinese style food Yelp again proved its value and the great ratings are well warranted though a bit dated. I generally find Chinese food to be a "craving" rather than a well planned meal but this food was so surprisingly good! Not too much sauce, great looking though sparse fresh vegetables , and noodles not soggy with oil, chicken thst was cooked to perfection. I was really really surprised and pleased. Oh, prices were incredibly reasonable. It's a tiny place with maybe 2 tables so definitely a take out place. Lack of vegetables and small dining area was the minus one star but for Chinese places this is a definite go-to! I'll be back!!

Ordered takeout after I discovered my favorite Chinese place closed early. Got the wonton soup, vegetable dumplings, meat dumplings, moo goo gai pan, and Egg rolls. The wonton soup had the meat dumplings in them. I preferred the vegetable dumplings. I really liked the egg rolls. The moo goo gai pan was also delicious. It came with plenty of rice. They adhered to Covid protocol.

Delivery never arrived due to a 'glitch' in their system.

This was our go-to Chinese place until the day the food never arrived. We called repeatedly and nobody answered the phone. Finally we drove over to see what was going on - they told us there was an issue with their online ordering system & our order was lost. Although we'd waited 2 1/2 hours, there was no apology & no offer to make the food. They complained they were 'slammed' and at 730 pm our order would need to be cancelled. I doubt we'll give them another chance. Mistakes happen but they were completely unwilling to make this right, completely ruining our Christmastime for the Jews

I've only ever gotten takeout from here, so I was excited to see how the dine-in experience would be. The ambience is good for a cute casual date or dinner to catch up with a friend. There are a ton of faux plants and greenery with hanging lights and warm tones. There's a good mixture of booths and tables and a small counter to sit at. We were seated quickly with waters arriving quickly. However, the remainder of the service left something to be desired. We were a bit rushed to order and after every item (and there were 6 items lol) the server would ask "ok is that all?" The drinks and food came quickly, but asking for boxes, the check, and to pay the check took a lot of flagging. We were forgotten about a couple of times when asking for boxes, lid for Tupperware that wasn't there, the check, etc., and could see other groups looking around in confusion waiting for their server too (some we overheard complaining about missed items that never came out). As far as drinks, the Never Sleep was amazing. It's a mix of Thai iced tea and Thai iced coffee (both of which I LOVE). However, when we went back a few days later just for this drink, it just tasted solely like Thai iced tea and zero coffee. I also had the yuzu plum mocktail which was really good and refreshing! We ordered the panang curry (chicken), basil fried rice (tofu), and pad see ew (beef). The fried rice was the best of all. What I will say is we ordered 3/5 spice and it was NOT spicy at all. That was disappointing, but I've ordered 3/5 spice from them previously and they never give enough spice (even dishes they label as spicy!). The panang had wonderful flavor, but was a bit light on the chicken. It came with white rice which was great. The pad see ew beef was pretty tough and chewy, and overall it was VERY heavy on the fish sauce, didn't taste much soy (or dark soy). We ended up not eating it because it was just so strongly fishy. Ive gotten takeout from here before, and my recommendation would be the pad Thai, fried catfish (little overpriced but good), basil fried rice, and the fried green beens. What's nice is they give options for soft or firm tofu which I don't find often. I will also say that have added gratuity of 20% if you do not leave a tip (as shown on their website). I personally would never not tip even when frustrated with service (I think you should always tip for dine in), but given how other patrons were visibly frustrated, it's just something to consider when coming to eat here. I wouldnt come back to dine in, but I would get take out for very particular items that have been good before (as recommended above). I do wish they were true to spice levels I've had in other places here and in Thailand. And I do recommend maybe some fine tuning on service.

Forgot a couple things at one point (sauces), but that's never a huge deal to me if I don't have to wait too long. Now for the food: It's a solid MEH for me. I ordered the kratiem prik Thai (garlic peppery), which comes with rice. This is my favorite Thai dish, which normally tells me all I need to know about a place. Got the lunch special at $14.95, which includes a spring roll. Paid $4 extra for Tom Yum, too. Garlic peppery: NOPE! It wasn't bad but the rice was overcooked and the dish, itself, was lacking flavor. I'm used to this dish being very flavorful and, dare I say, garlicky? This was neither. Added soy sauce and chili and it was still under seasoned/flavored. And at $14.95, which was only like 1-2 bucks less than the full entree price, I was not impressed. Tom Yum: lots of chicken but not as much flavor as I'm used to. There are better Tom Yuma in the area for sure. Spring roll: basic. Could've passed on it altogether. They put the sauce on it instead of serving on the side, too, in case that's not your thing. Thai tea: $5 but pass. The cup was so full of ice and the tea itself tasted like sweet orange milk with a hint of Thai tea. Decor: very cute and they have a patio! The floral decor was cute and clean. Mango mojito: $16. Yikes. These are almost city prices and it wasn't strong lol In all, not a bad experience but not an impressive one. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way for it. Not worth the $35 I ended up paying for it (this is for everything listed above except the mojito).

We got the crunchy rice with sour pork (naem khao thadaeu), pork shoulder (ping), fried catfish (patod), chicken pad thai (kua mee), and warm coconut milky dessert (bua loy). All the dishes were delicious but a bit more salty than Thai. Feels like a lot of fish sauces in all the dishes. The crunchy rice came with lettuce but ours were not the best lettuce. The fried catfish were nicely fried with a perfect coating. Definitely a dish to get. The pork shoulder is another dish to get. Nicely seasoned with sticky rice. Their version of pad thai is uniquely different than Thai. A bit more sweet but the lime makes it better. Wife wanted to try bua loy dessert. It is a warm sweet dessert that balanced out all the salty flavors of the dishes. Something to try as well. Flavor are still the same. The dishes we order were too much for 2 of us. My only complaint was the restaurant smelled like smoke when we walked in. Not the kind where there was a fire in the kitchen but more like someone smoking in the kitchen?
