First time back since early 2000s. My parents ordered from this place all the time in the 90s and early 2000s... We get a combo of the sweet-and-sour chicken, the chicken, broccoli and my favorite Hong Kong chicken. I just moved back to the area and had a craving for a good Chinese food... Went here for lunch and ordered hot and sour soup, chicken soup with noodles, happy family, triple delight combination platter and mixed veggies with tofu. The servings are definitely smaller than other places and the quality is not that great. The flavors seemed off. I've had these dishes and soups numerous timed from multiple other Chinese restaurants throughout WNY but this place just had very odd flavors and strange consistency to the food. The Hot and Sour soup was lacking flavor and had snot-like clumps in it. The chicken soup with mei fun noodles tasted bitter, almost spoiled or massive amounts of rice vinegar in it. The triple delight combo container was 85% rice and 15% triple delight (very small serving of the entree). The veggie dish and Happy Family were lackluster in flavor and the containers were not filled all the way (only about 3/4 of the way full). There are seats and about 6 tables inside and plenty of parking in the plaza parking lot. The staff is friendly and have everything ready in the usual 10 to 15 minutes. This place works if you are desperate, don't mind weird flavors or lack of flavor, and enjoy getting less than the container can hold. The only reason it's not five stars for me is that it's no frills when you walk in the door. Go somewhere fancy if you're looking for 5 stars. If you want food that tastes good to take home, eat in while you're on your phone, or in the car like I did on my most recent video as I left town. Don't worry, I didn't use chopsticks. He included a fortune cookie for dessert. I have been getting food here for years. When my kids were sick, and we had to cancel our Thanksgiving plans last minute, they were open. We were thankful. The owners live in the neighborhood, so we would see them watching fireworks at UB. They used to have a large, handwritten Chinese menu on a whiteboard on the wall. You know they are good, like when you see Italians in an Italian restaurant. They serve others who know what's good. I couldn't read the white board, but sometimes I would ask her for something off that menu. She would ask a few questions to narrow it down. Yes, it was good. :) They also serve typical American General Tso's, etc. My favorite is their shrimp egg foo young, without the gravy. The soup broth was fine, but the noodles were gummy and thick and the meat was way overcooked. The combo dish was clearly not fresh and overcooked. Very disappointing. It pains me to write this review because China King on Maple has been one of my go take spots for decades. However, this last visit will have been my last. Look, I've seen the chefs grab food with their bare hands and through into the wok and it never really fazed me, but this time as I got there before most of my order was made I had the distinct displeasure of seeing the chef through my orange beef together in the wok then walk to the very back of the kitchen grab a large container of peanut butter for my sesame cold noodles and put his bare hand in a scoop a wad of peanut butter. I'm confident our eyes met and he saw the disgust in my eyes, and then he continued putting the dish together. I was at a loss for words having already paid for my order I took the bag as the woman at the front counter handed it to me and drove home only to throuw the whole unopened bag of food into my garbage can outside my garage. So she kept the $12 and kept my food, and I walked out with nothing having been robbed of $12 and screamed at. I'm principled. I don't take to being robbed. But the food is too good for me to stop coming, so I've just been careful with my orders since then. However, I'd have been here twice as often over the years if that incident had never happened, so it ended up costing them hundreds - literally. But all that aside, what you have here is some of the best - and by far the best value - authentic home style Chinese food in WNY. The Americanized portion of the menu (on the printed menus) is pretty good, from the General Tso to the Curry Shrimp. But the Chinese stuff (which is only listed on the wall, hand-written, not on any printed menu), consists of about 60 items, a few of which are soups, all absolutely fabulous. And cheap. And miles better than the fake sh**. Sadly the vast majority of Americans order the fake sh**. And yes I look at them in a judgy way and yes you're all basic AF if that is you. Eating fake American food designed for people with no real palette, that an actual Chinese person would never be caught dead eating. Just an FYI. So, those home style dishes. What is more fabulous is that they all cost between $5 and $6.50. You can't really ask for much more than that. They're decent sized, and you can buy 2 of them for the same price as 1 home style dish elsewhere. Beef noodle soup is good, pork w pickled veg soup is better, pork chop noodle soup is best. The rest? Get Beef w Black Pepper (order it off menu as Chicken w/Black Pepper if you want, same price), with onions, mushrooms, white rice and lots of wonderful sauce. Add Sriracha yourself. Worst Chinese food in the area hands down. As a previous reviewer stated, no fortune cookie. When I asked for a pack of soy sauce, the owner gave me the weirdest look and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why until I read a review stating he like to charge for those so Im sure it chapped him to give it away for free! Rice was stale beyond belief, absolutely disgusting. Order pepper steak, and as someone who sticks to what they know and always orders the same, I will tell you one of two things is true: 1) the was the lowest of the lowest possible steak grade served, or 2) that simply, was not steak and rather a mysterious meat I's rather not know. Being the interaction with the owner is brief, the bad customer service provided was not as bad as the overall quality of that food. My honest opinion: if you want to support a local business, keeping in mind they also have to meet you halfway with food qualify at the least if that's the service provided, Wok 28 on Hopkins, will not disappoint. read more

This place has been around for a very long time. They are located in a plaza located at the corner of North Forest and Maple. Because of the other establishments in the plaza, there are always a lot of cars in the parking lot, but finding a Parking space has never been a problem. When you walk in, it's clearly more of a fast food pickup Chinese restaurant rather than a sit down kind of restaurant. However, there are clean tables in there, if you choose to eat there. Just keep in mind that they do not have servers though. As for their menu, they have a pretty good lunch menu and the prices are super affordable. In fact, I'm really surprised to see it so low. I've always been pretty satisfied with my order. The last time I was there, I tried something new: Beef Brisket Noodle Soup. While it was a hot day, the soup was very good. It was hearty with large chunks of beef briskets, veggies and nice, savory broth. In all, it was a complete meal for me. I had so much food that I could not finish it all in one sitting. The only downside was that I had asked for hot oil and the hot oil tasted a little rancid, so for that, they get 4 stars. Would I go back there again? So I was told that this place had good take out. Without much to do on a Saturday I went to try a few of their dishes. They have two menus like most Chinese places... an "American" one and a "Chinese" one. The "C" menu was posted on the wall with English translations. The prices seemed pretty good...everything around the $5 mark. The food however...was not so good. They give you a lot of rice but the entree was weak... weak sauce indeed. My wife and I ordered a soup and two dishes. None of the dishes panned out well. The soup was the biggest offender of the day with little to no taste and absolutely no creativity involved. My recommendation... stay away unless you only have $5 to burn for food. But if you have $5... save it and go eat at Burger King or something instead. read more

When my lab-mates at school said we were going to China King for lunch my first thoughts were meh...just another typical "Chinese" takeout restaurant with general tso chicken chalked full of MSG. Boy was I wrong. One thing I will say I like about China king, having been twice with my lab mates now, is the "traditional" menu. Although the past few times I did ask for their help in ordering off the traditional menu (it is still posted on the side wall in Mandarin and english), I was pleasantly surprised. Last time, I had the squid which came with rice and soup. It was flavorful, tasty and not something I can usually find (or know how to order) from a typical Chinese take out place. My friends both had a fish dish, which looked equally as tasty! I also have to mention the prices. Lunch special less than $5? You really cannot beat that, especially if you are a poor college student like me. Is it the best quality meal I've ever had? Probably not, but you really cannot beat the price of the lunch special and the traditional options. I would definitely recommend it especially if you are interested in the not-so-typical dishes and price point. read more

I grew up in Amherst, and though China King wasn't around, we still visit my parents and this is the take out place that my mom prefers. Sure she's chummy with the current owners, so she gets dishes cooked a particular way. But even if you don't have that kind of access, I did notice that they have special Chinese menu in Chinese and English posted on the wall. It does include noodle soups and other dishes that my memory fails to recall an example of. This menu is not found on their take out menu. This place was straight up awful... Dude was rushing me on the phone to put in my order and then when I got there he forgot I ordered wonton soup.... Not only that there were no fortune cookies included and you had to pay extra for the packaged sauce. Getting into the food now, the general taos chicken was barely sauced in anything and the fried rice was not appetizing. I also ordered lo mein yet more than half the container had fried rice with it, that was again, not appealing... so dry. Don't go here if you're really wanting some good Chinese food. I stopped in to China King today for a take out order. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken. The portion was large. The chicken was very tasty. I liked that there was a big portion of chicken. A lot of similar restaurants can skimp on the chicken. China king does not. The restaurant is not very glamorous and that's not a bad thing. China King has enough seating to fit a decent amount of costumers. It is rather small inside. I personally prefer to order take out. The prices seem a little high for take out Chinese food. I and my wife came to Williamsville ( Buffalo) from New York City to visit a friend. We arrived here at lunch time and looked up a place to have lunch by reading reviews on Yelp. The place is cheap for sure but food is also cheap in quality. Our beef dish contained few gristles of tendons burried in mountain of onions and drenched in sauce. The General Tao's chicken will pass as desert! My wife remarked that we are served fried dough in the name of chicken! All in all it is what you pay for! Cheap price, very cheap quality. Over the phone she is short and doesn't answer questions, and in person she does not care about the customer or placing the food in the bag ensuring nothing spills. A little high in sodium, but then again what Chinese place is not. Back in the good ole' days, China King offered a $3.25 Lunch special that included an entrée, a side of fried rice (or white rice), and wonton soup. My best friend at the time and I would frequent various locations to get a quick fix lunch. Given the small price for the offerings, China King was a sure fire bet to get your bang for the buck. I'll review my experience of China King based on the various dishes I've had on their lunch special menu. Chicken w/ Broccoli: An abundance of Chicken was served on a decent sized serving of Broccoli. The mildly bold brown sauce for which the application is served contained a slight flavor with notes of salt. Patrons consuming the Chicken w/ Broccoli will find that the abundance of fat in the chicken creates a welcoming balance between the tenderness of the chicken and the softer texture derived from the lard of the chicken. The Broccoli did not contain the earthiness for which this vegetable is known, but it did have a satisfying crunch, with gave the entire application a welcoming textural contrast. Beef w/ Broccoli: Similar to the Chicken w/ Broccoli application, the beef was slightly more tender than the chicken. The brown sauce used in this rendition has more of a potent salty taste, this could be attributed to the marinated of the meat. Sesame Chicken: Perhaps one of the better renditions observed in Buffalo, China Kings version of the highly popular dish is well executed in both texture and flavor. At first bite, patrons will find that the nicely crispy exterior of the chicken has a well balanced textural contrast to the soft and juiciness of the chicken's interior. To further aid in the chicken's flavors, the sauced used in the application had a perfect balance between sweet and savory. China King's Sesame Chicken should be one of the most celebrated renditions of this application as the dish produces a profound comforting feeling during consumption. Beef Chow Fun ($5.25): Not on the $3.25 lunch special menu is the Beef Chow Fun. Sadly, the Beef Chow Fun lacked the potent flavors for which this dish is derived. The noodles were stuck together and overcooked. The flavors of the brown sauce did not permeate into the dish, and the beef was slightly rubbery. Of course, not enough to hinder the experience as the go to $3.25 dishes reinforced the notion that China King is a best bet lunch around the Buffalo area. read more

I love their vegetarian rice noodles and singapore noodles. While waiting for food order , you can enjoy their green tea that they keep in Carafe. I have been here three times in the last year or so for lunch only because I had to go to Spectrum and have a friend in a retirement home close by First visit bland and blah. Decided not to go back. Tried it again after a Spectrum visit, same old flat tasting (albeit cheap) loaded with rice lunch special I can't recall what t was, but all lunch prices are $4.95. I knew I was probably making a mistake when there are so many great little Chinese restaurants really close by, but I was hungry, decided to try the Kung Pao chicken lunch special. The special lunches are bowls filled with rice, topped with your choice of whatever, which is super skimpy. My Kung Pao lunch was bland tasteless chicken (sliced super thin and about an ounce, a few pieces of vegetables, that is three small slices of bell pepper, a few chopped up carrots, two young corn pieces, maybe a slice or two of onions, and peanuts. Not for me... If your aim is a cheap lunch and tasteless food this your place. read more

Nothing has changed since my original review - the quality still fluctuates wildly. The General Tso's is alright but it's a bit too hard and there's not enough chicken in each piece. Chicken with Broccoli and other chicken dishes usually have tough chicken that's often flavorless. Lately it's been good about 1 in 5 times which means it's time to take another break from this place for a while. This was a solid food experience, with a side order of rude behavior. So starting with the good: I liked the fact that the food tasted fresh, that isn't always a given from a chinese restaurant. I had the Hunan Chicken, and egg drop soup. Both of which were good, in fact I'll say in general better than most. My issue however is the the woman behind the counter could barely be bothered to get off the phone to take an order or answer a question. If this is a regular employee then she represents your store very poorly. If this is the Owner or family of the owner, then you are hamstringing your business. I won't be coming back to this restaurant. To put it mildly even if this is "the best chinese food ever" it really is just marginally better than it's competition. Most of the competition makes at least the effort at being accomodating. Far better service + minor differences in food quality = I go with the better service. read more
