Gin Gin might be my new favorite Chinese restaurant in Buffalo! Even as someone who grew up working in Chinese restaurants, Gin Gin has impressed me. First impression, it's an older restaurant, the interior is nothing fancy, but older, which might give the wrong impression but I'm not one to quickly judge until I get my food. So after we sat down, we were given the menu. All Chinese restaurants have a big menu with countless options to choose from, but Gin Gin has by far the largest menu I've ever seen, adding onto the dishes not on the actual menu but posted on the walls. The cool thing is that they serve not just your typical American Chinese food but also some authentic Chinese dishes. So it took me quite some time to decide what to order. I even had to ask the boss for recommendations. She recommended me the Curry Chicken (Chop). Which was unlike the Curry Chicken my family's restaurant used to make or any other restaurant I've been to. The use bone in chicken wing pieces instead of the typical chicken breast/thigh meat. While I do prefer it the typical way, I was down to try something new. The Egg Drop Soup was also great, and it came with a side of Crispy Noodles, which you can add into the soup. But I like dipping it in duck sauce like chips and salsa. The Egg Drop Soup was very flavorful and I believe they use chicken broth/stock instead of just water, which means higher quality! The Beef w Garlic Sauce is something I always love to get when I go to Chinese restaurants, and they made it beautifully. It was full of flavor and better than most Beef w Garlic Sauce I've had. Quality has gone downhill. Placed a medium-sized order for pickup about 7pm. Bag full of food was leaky which was super sad for my new car. So - everything was okay, even decent except for the Sweet/Sour chicken. It was too done, too crispy, completely burnt and inedible. Add in the fact that the restaurant must be cross-contaminating their flyers b/c this chicken smelled like fish. Gag. read more

Stopped in for lunch and ordered string beans and pork lunch special with pork fried rice and the hot and sour soup. The rice and the stir fry were good, lots of beans and the pork was tender and moist. Not bad...... Then there was the soup. Wow!!! I could eat that till the cows come home. This place is horrible. After spending $18 on 2 orders of crab rangoons, them coming grease filled, curdled, and inedible. I called the restaurant to ask if I could have a new order or a refund, the woman turned belligerent and said no one complains and I cant get anything Umm, my first red flag was the place is never busy. I should have known better. They also charge more for FREE sweet and sour sauce every other place gives for free. No customer service skills, she hung up on me, she told me it was my fault. Enjoyed a fantastic meal takeout meal from here! The Orange Chicken was loaded with saucy chicken, a few pieces of broccoli, and white rice. As part of the dinner special, it also came with a side of soup. I chose the hot and sour soup which was AMAZING! Currently they are takeout only. 4 stars for the extensive menu. I ordered crab rangoons which were a bit greasy and didn't come with any sauce. Also orange chicken which was ok. My bf got pig ear meal which he liked- but stuff like that is slightly outside of my comfort zone. I seriously couldn't believe how many options they have though. For people looking for something different, or I assume more authentic dishes than what we normally see here, definitely give them a shot! Very nice portion sizes for reasonable prices, though the food is standard Chinese fare (the scallion pancakes, though VERY hefty, were also kinda thick and starchy--again though, you get a lot of food for the same price). Personal not the place for us when wanting the "American" Chinese food have grown up on. There are so many different regional styles and cooking techniques. No two places are the same. You really have to know the difference or your opinion won't be respected. Gin Gin from what I have been told is the place for a real traditional Asian soup. Lots of people swear by it. Service is fast and welcoming. You will walk-in and see a group of people all eating different types of soups. The inside is dated but what looks like a traditional Chinese eatery. First time trying Gin Gin the other day and I was impressed! I ordered the pork and veggie dumplings, which while cooked from frozen are freaking delicious! I also got the Chinese chicken with veggies and mushrooms (R22?) which I found to be delightful. The veggies and mushrooms were hearty and the rice was delightful. Ok so I don't do this...I've never left a bad review anywhere because I truly believe that people are human and everyone makes mistakes...however that being said...We ordered out tonight because we've been spring cleaning and out side with the kids all day. Chineese was our choice...our usual place is closed on Sundays so we had to try somewhere new. We went with Gin Gin on Sheridan and Sweet Home...I ordered Orange Chicken and got some kind of broccoli chicken dish...which ok, not what I wanted but eh I'll give it a shot...however...the "chicken" is completely inedible. It's like globs of fat and stringy mushy meat. It is literally like dog food. When my husband called and explained that he thought there may have been a mistake and asked if the meal could be switched out for something different he was told - No, we don't make mistakes, our food and chicken is fresh and no mistakes are made. False advertising. They say they serve Gin. Double Gin, really if you believe the sign. Well, they don't. What to get: Anything off the home-style, real Chinese menu, especially Salt Pepper Chicken Chop, or Curry Chicken Chop. What else: Don't even ask for a glass of Gin, because you'll be disappointed. Buffalo has a whole host of delicious authentic Chinese restaurants now. One of the oldest is Gin Gin. They have an extensive Americanized menu which is what most of the stupid reviews here on Yelp are based on because people don't really know what they're talking about. You don't come to Gin Gin for Americanized Chinese food. There are much better places to get it and why would you want it in the first place? Here, you can get real authentic homestyle stuff, as you can from several different places in Buffalo - not least this place which is serving up some of the best Chicken Chops imaginable. The salt and pepper one is my favourite, even though it's a bit dry. I sometimes get the curry sauce on the side for a little over a dollar (large portion of sauce!), or of course the curry chicken chop, which comes smothered and delicious, like your mother last night. The woman is one of the friendliest ever and even though they're technically supposed to close at 10:30 she will sometimes take orders as late as 10:45 and will sometimes stay in the shop till way after 11 to give out the orders that people have placed. That cannot be said about the vast majority of places. Chains or local. So: Service second to none and authentic Chinese food very good. Highly recommended. The bubble teas I would skip but if you like sweet Americanized stuff made from powders then they are definitely not bad and were some of the first that I ever loved. And I was basically wrong about everything I said in the old days. (1) The Bubble Tea is not that great. Now that I've had the best of the best (Sharetea, Coco, Gong Cha, and a few local places here and there like Tea And Milk in Queens and Tapioca Place in Houston), it's hard to call this great bubble tea. It's just very sweet, typical, slightly chemical tasting. The tapioca is not great. It's nice if you need a fix, and the fruit flavours can be pretty yum, but it's far from amazing. (2) The Americanized Chinese food (which is what I used to get) is just okay, and this Shrimp Curry is not one I'd ever order now that I know better. China King and Golden Wok do it much better. (3) However, they have a huge, extensive, enormous, massive (did I mention big?) authentic homestyle Chinese menu which is basically real Chinese food made for actual Chinese people. And, surprise surprise, it's absolutely delicious. I recommend the Curry Chicken Chop, or even better, the Salt n Pepper Chicken Chop. Absolutely wonderful and generous strips of fried chicken, cut up Tonkatsu style, and covered in spices or curry, served with rice. Delicioso! All of the other homestyle dishes I've tried are excellent too, but the "Salt N Pepper anything" is where it is at, in my opinion, and that is also true over at China King on Maple & N Forest, who have a slightly less extensive but similarly delicious homestyle menu. The one element in which they wee wee all over China King, though, is service. The woman here might be the friendliest owner and server in any Chinese restaurant in the world outside of Xi'an province. I made that up by the way. But seriously she is so friendly, she is a joy to buy things from. And speaking of joy, most of the Chinese spots out here close at 10pm or earlier. Gin Gin officially stays open until 10.30pm every single night, but actually you can call after 10.30 and still get food, and pick up as late as 11pm, which is when the lady usually reluctantly goes home and looks forward to the next time she can charge basement prices for delicious real Chinese food. Peking Quick One and China King are rivals to this throne, but Gin Gin has some of the very best real Chinese food in WNY. If anyone knows of any other "real Chinese" menus in town, please let me know, as I'd love to try them. The coldest month may be Jan Jan, the girl from the block in the Bronx may be Jen Jen, a warmer month may be Jun Jun, Bon Jovi may be Jon Jon, but for real Chinese food... it's Gin Gin. read more

Biggest egg rolls around! Gin Gin is a favorite among my circle of friends. Before the pandemic caused everyone to shelter in place we would order Chinese takeout at least once a month and gather together at one of our homes for a night of good times and games. These days we are still doing that but meeting via video chat instead! We each order what we want and then go pick it up, where the employees meet you right that the door where they are set up to receive payment and deliver the goods, so to speak! And boy are they good! And talk about professional. They get you in and out with courtesy and concern for your safety and theirs. I appreciate that about Gin Gin very much. I didn't take pics this time around because I was busy video chatting with friends and I was distracted. BAD YELPER! BAD! This was our first visit (take-out) to Gin Gin and we were not disappointed. The woman working was very nice and the food was delicious. It is not the absolute favor Chinese food place of our house but it's a close second. Gin Gin offers an extensive menu selection of starters, soups, rice, noodles, house specials, and boba tea drinks. FOOD: -Hot and Sour Soup: The quest to find the best hot and sour soup in the city of Buffalo to replace my beloved one back home in Texas has been a long and disheartening one. I am glad to finally say that for me, a very suitable one has been found. I like a sweet taste to my H&S which this one had it just has what tastes like a yellow mustard flavor added. This is not my favorite flavor but it's not too overpowering to really make a huge difference and not a fan of water chestnuts. -Spicy Chicken with scrambled egg: It was nice. The egg was in one big clump so I didn't really get the benefit until the end of my meal but the sauce was nice and I was able to choose between white and dark meat. I like this option since white meat does not appeal to me in certain dishes. There are chopped chilies which give the whole dish a nice heat as you bite into it. Yum! -Sesame Chicken: It's ok. We were not disappointed nor were we impressed. DRINKS: -Bubble tea: The black boba must not have been microwaved long enough because some of them had cold hard centers. I have never microwaved my boba at home, only boiled, so I am not sure if this is normal for microwaved boba. The jasmine green tea was very nice. Not overly sweet which is what I prefer. This has been my go to Chinese restaurant for the longest time. Since I moved to OP it's been difficult to go to my favorite Chinese spot, but today I happened to be in the area. My culinary journey at Gin Gin's always begins with a cup of their homemade soup. Everything is made to order, so you can only expect the freshest ingredients. The broth is so flavorful, you can't help but smile as you indulge. My go to appetizer is the Hong Kong dumplings, they contain beef, shrimp, and pork, and are lightly pan fried, make sure to order extra dipping sauce! What makes this restaurant unique is it is not your "typical" American Chinese restaurant. They have authentic Chinese dishes, in addition to the American style food. I always order off the Chinese menu. Since I can't read Chinese I usually just point at the line item on the menu and ask the owner what it is. I make sure never to order the same item twice and I have been tasting my way through the vast menu. If you are in the mood for a tasty culinary experience take the drive down. It is worth it! You can't get bored with Gin Gin. They have a massive amount of dishes on the menu not to mention the basics which are available at any Chinese takeout place. After today's experience I will stay away from the Americanized menu and focus on trying more authentic food they offer. It's a really casual place, but rather nice and dining in is not bad idea either. Although we got uncomfortably hot because the air-conditioning wasn't working that time. O well... It was lunch time and I decided to have special combination only because they offered soups and dishes different than at any other takeout places I usually go. I choose Mongolian Shrimp and Bean Curd Soup. My partner opted for Szechuan Pickled Vegetable Soup with Pork and Chow Fun Noodles. Also I wanted to check out an egg roll. After a bunch of recent fiascos, I started thinking there is no place where I could get good, tasty egg roll anymore. About our food, my soup was average. I was hoping for something loaded with soft tofu but nothing like vegetable soup with square pieces of the firm kind. My shrimp dish was too sweet and full of cabbage, onion, carrots and fresh tomatoes which was actually refreshing and great idea. Maybe next time I should ask to cut the amount of sugar they put into my food, if it's possible. The soup with pickled vegetable was good. I liked the texture of crunchy pickles, but I think next time we'll go for something different. The egg roll was very tasty. Not too greasy, round and full of good stuff. We had already tried a lot of their dishes before, but for now I only remember Chicken Feet and Spareribs on Rice and Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup, both were great. After ordering a few more times we have been very disappointed with the service and quality of food. The General Tso's Tofu has been dry, over fried and lacking flavor. They need to have someone who can understand phone orders as they have messed up our orders every time and there is no recourse when you bring it to their attention. One of the better take out Chinese places. Menu has lots of options. Got the appetizer order of boneless ribs, large wonton soup, and house special fried rice. All came in large containers so there is plenty for either leftovers or to share. Rice had a good amount of the different meats, carrots, peas, and tasted great. The spare ribs were tender and flavorful. I hadn't had those from anywhere in a long time and the really hit the spot. Maybe could have used a touch of additional sauce drizzled over them but that's just personal preference as I love the sauce on Chinese take out boneless ribs. Wonton soup was good. This Chinese restaurant definitely caters to university students. It's not the cleanest place and they don't really seem to care about the interior design, but they DO have large portions. My husband and I ordered the lunch special General Tso's chicken and Sichuan chicken. The lunch specials come with soup or egg roll and a side of rice. We did egg drop soup with rice for both our orders. They give you a small dish of wonton crackers with your soup too. The egg drop soup was good (a bit salty) and the food came out pretty fast. I first had Gin Gin when they first opened behind the wal-mart plaza and so glad they've been doing well ever since. Their quality remains the same and even though it's pricier than other Chinese take-outs, it's well worth it. Favorite dish is the scallion chicken. Only complaint is that they're far from us but that makes us appreciate their food even more. We tried the Phoenix chicken for the first time and that was delicious. I grew up in NYC and in a Chinese household, Chinese food was abundant. When i decided to go to University at Buffalo for school, my food selections became very limited. Gin Gin is close to UB's north campus so it becomes easy access for hungry college students. It's been 7 years since I've graduated and from what I recalled this was my 5 star quality restaurant. It was my first time back in November 2015 after many years, I graduated in 2008. I came here with my wife raving about how great this place was and we were both very excited to taste what I once experienced so long ago. The dish I order 99% of the time is the satay chicken chop over rice and it never disappointed me. So coming back this time, I was not disappointed but it really didn't wow me like I thought it would. My wife was actually disappointed, but it was the dish she ordered, beef or chicken with broccoli. But who orders that when they want authentic Chinese food? So her thoughts and feelings of this place was dismissed. But I would have to say, the broccoli was weird and did have a weird sweet aftertaste. When I came here many years ago, the owner herself, Gin Gin would talk to me all the time when I visited. She actually recognized me! Great for keeping your loyal customers. The restaurant was about half full, and our food took about 30 minutes to come. I don't recall if that's the norm, but I guess when I was a college student I didn't really care much about time. But 30 minutes is a long time to wait if you're hungry. So if time is a factor for you, either prepare extra time or consider something that will serve food faster. What a delight! A friend had suggested this corner Chinese restaurant where you actually can sit down or take out. The caring wife of the owner told me that they had no delivery for many years ... She was a cutie pie! I arrived shortly after opening and when I ordered the Hot and Sour soup she told me it was being made fresh ... FRESH! Yes! And, no I did not mind waiting for a delicious freshly made pint of Hot and Sour. It's appearance was yellowish rather this the brown I prefer but its flavors blended perfectly giving me the flavor I wanted plus a nice assortment of items on the soup. My take out chicken was full of complex flavor combinations with a little heat that made my spicy craving mouth very happy. For 60 cents extra I had brown rice. The portion was really big and I was debating saving some for a Tuesday lunch but it was too good so my chop sticks picked up every last piece of yumminess! Service: This is the first time actually eating Gin gin after hearing about it from my friends. They always warned me about the long wait time for take out so i was prepared to order it and do some errands before I actually went to pick up my order. When I called to place my order it was quick and easy and the woman on the phone told me that the wait would be 30 minutes. I took my time with my errands and ended up getting there in 45 minutes instead. The lady at the counter was so nice and explained why she had to tell me it would take 30 minutes. (There was a big party of people eating at the time) I didn't mind because I was prepared anyway. When I got my order it was still pretty hot so it was probably prepared and packaged recently. I think it's pretty crazy that my friends had to wait close to an hour for their orders on the regular. Food: I ordered 2 kinds of congee; preserved egg and pork congee and beef congee. Both were really good and I would order it again and hopefully I won't have to experience a long wait time in their restaurant even after waiting for a while before leaving like some of my friends did. I have been going to Gin Gin's for twenty years. She has some of the best Chinese food in the area. There are so many things on the menu worth trying. Her soups are very good also. Salt and pepper chicken chop is great. You should always allow some extra time when ordering from Gin Gin. They can get very busy and everything is cooked to order. Plan on ordering 20 to 30 minutes before you like to pick it up. That being said, it is so worth the wait. Eating in at the restaurant is really good also. Order at the counter and then take a seat.
