So after a few months of living in Buffalo, I finally mustered up the courage to go to Gin Gin. Let me start by saying that I have pretty high standards when it comes to Chinese food. Being raised on Chinese food, I don't usually go out to a restaurant to eat what I would otherwise eat at home. However, a few months away from home makes a person crave some good Chinese food. From the outside it looks super dodgy, but once inside, I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't as bad as I had imagined considering how run down it looked on the outside. They had plenty of seating, the lighting was good, the place looked generally "clean enough." But even with the positives, they couldn't hide the fact that some tables looked like they were only marginally wiped, the tables and chairs were pretty old, the floors appeared a little dirtier than would normally be acceptable (but like I said earlier, the inside was still a lot more welcoming than the outside). The lady behind the counter was also extremely nice to me throughout my visit. The food itself, I would say was A-OK. I ordered a lunch special which came with an egg roll, pork fried rice, and bean curd pork. The portions were pretty generous and the food looked very appetizing but the flavor had much to be desired. In fact, for the duration of the meal, I couldn't help thinking how the food was slightly bland. What they DO have going for them is their very expansive menu and the fact that they offer Bubble Tea/Boba. For the price-point and the service, I would give this place 4 stars. But since it is a restaurant at the end the day, it should ultimately be judged on its food, which I do not think deserves more than 3 stars. read more

I have been going to Gin Gin's for twenty years. She has some of the best Chinese food in the area. There are so many things on the menu worth trying. Her soups are very good also. Salt and pepper chicken chop is great. You should always allow some extra time when ordering from Gin Gin. They can get very busy and everything is cooked to order. Plan on ordering 20 to 30 minutes before you like to pick it up. That being said, it is so worth the wait. Eating in at the restaurant is really good also. Order at the counter and then take a seat. They bring out the food as it's ready. You will not be disappointed. read more

DON'T EVER ORDER DIM SUM. They over charge you. They only give you 3 pieces in the sui mai, ha gao dishes compared to New York City every where serves 4 pieces. The beef tripe literally had no flavor in it. BLAND! The wait was extremely long and the food wasn't even that great. Maybe I'll go there for the house dishes to try it out but the dimsum was definitely not worth it. They have terribly bad service. What kind of chinese place that doesn't serve you tea with the blink of an eye. Tea is the most important thing when you go YUM CHA! There weren't enough people to do the cleaning and serving food. read more

We don't order Chinese take out often, but today we had a hankering. Gin Gin is close to home, so we finally gave it a try. We ordered a beef & broccoli lunch special and a Buddha's Delight bean curd to share. The total bill was about $18. Pick up was a quick 20-minute turnaround. My husband said there was a line when he picked up, and the phone was ringing off the hook, but he didn't have to wait long. When the food got home, the containers were pretty packed and hot. The food itself was good, but nothing that really stood out. The beef dish was more flavorful than the bean curd. Since it's close, and lunch specials are only $7.59, we'll probably order again someday. But since no socks were knocked off, we're in to rush. read more

Gin Gin is get's five stars for being in Buffalo. I live in New York City where it doesn't take long to find a decent Chinese restaurant. However, in Buffalo a place like Gin Gin is hard to find and if you've lived there long a enough you would understand. For Buffalonians, ignorance is bliss. They don't know what is out there. All they have is Fuddruckers, Applebees and Chili's all around the area. Gin Gin's is where it's at. They have a parking lot. That's always good. The wait time for food can be a long long time though. They're usually busiest on a Saturday. I once waited 40 minutes for one order of a fish curry. The prices are a little steep for my taste, but being in Buffalo, I can't complain. I had the fish curry with tomatoes last time I was there. It was delicious!!! For $8 and change it's a pretty good deal. You get enough to feed 2-4 people. I posted a picture on yelp. In the end, Gin Gin is worth the wait and the easily one of the best Chinese restaurants in all of Buffalo read more

Gin gin was the first restaurant I got authentic Chinese food from when I moved to buffalo 11.5 years ago. A distant relative who used to live in buffalo took me there and introduced me to the pork ribs and bean curd dish, and is still my favorite dish today. Ever since then, I have continued to get take out from gin gin for lunch sporadically, a few times a year for the last decade. And the only reason I don't do it more often is because I don't live closer! It's about a 10min drive from my work though, so that's how I still manage to get take out from there once in a great while, especially when I'm sick - they're the only place around that makes congee everyday (wok and roll only makes them on weekends). I can't really speak to the service of the place that so many other reviewers seem to have issues with, but I can say that it is a small family restaurant, and in order to offer the vast menu while still keeping costs relatively low, I imagine that it's hard to find good help. I haven't been there for dim sum yet because honestly I would rather go to Toronto for that, or wait until I go home to Taiwan which I do once every year, but I definitely want to check it out at Gin Gin sometime soon. read more

Gin gin is a little expensive and their food does take a while to make but the food is absolutely fantastic. I'm a frequent here, and I've tried a dozen different dishes. I was never once unimpressed with their food. Highly recommend the ma ok tofu and pig ear chow mein. Give gin gin a try you won't be disappointed. Pro tip: call and order your food 30 minutes in advance and pay with cash because it's cheaper! PS: the lady in the front is honestly the nicest woman you will ever meet. read more

Love this Chinese restaurant. The food is really good. Used to live close, but will drive from the Southtowns to get it now. Sometimes the wait is a little longer than quoted, but it is worth it. read more

This place is my go-to. I recommend the boneless rib tips, it's nothing unique but it's just good. They don't have cheap egg rolls like other restaurants have been starting to use. The fried wontons are also pretty good. The service is swift and easy. read more

Wasn't too impressed. I ordered some basic take out....a main dish, fried rice and an egg roll. The egg roll was good....but everything else wasn't up to what I expected based on the reviews here. I'll give it another try next time I'm out there as everyplace can just have a bad night. read more

The food was not tasty. It was extremely pricy for 3 types of noodles dishes over 45 bucks.

If I could give this restaurant a zero I would. My brother ordered 2 entrees from the menu option from their web site which I picked up. The bill seemed higher than usual. After further discussion, we realized that we're charger $18.95 for a Seafood Deluxe meal which was posted on their site as $11.95. I went back to the restaurant to get a refund. Much to my surprise, the young girl said "We're not responsible for someone posting an old menu". I told her it was from their official website and she refused to give me my money back. What happened to old fashion customer service and admit when a mistake was made? You would think they would be thankful for any business seeing how the diningroom is closed. This is besides the fact that the quality of their food has diminished significantly. I will never order from here again. read more

Best Chinese food in WNY in my book. Stopped by randomly when we were out shopping over a year ago and have been back many times. First the woman behind the counter is the sweetest person I know. She is so nice and always has suggestions on what to order. We've had oxtail soup, dumplings, noodles, egg rolls, milk tea, all different types of chopped chicken and beef. All of it was amazing!! We have never been disappointed with our orders. They do have American Chinese but I would suggest going with a more traditional dish off the back of the menu or one of the many specials posted. The traditional dishes are amazing and have always exceeded my expectations. The portion size is large and served family style and if you choose to eat in. You have to order at the counter however they will bring out your food to you with actual plates and silverware which is a nice touch. Definitely give this place a try you won't be disappointed. read more

Took out tonight, based on the Buffalo News review. Horrible. Cold, no flavor, fatty, wow expensive! Ordered Szechine (sp?) chicken which seemed more like a bland chicken and garlic sauce. General Tso's chicken, all breading and fat. Two orders of different dumplings, again just tasted old and bland. Hot and sour soup, coagulated mess, very thick. Overall, why this restaurant exists and why people like it I have no idea. read more

This is one of me and my boyfriends favorite Chinese restaurants to get food from! Good quality food and not very expensive. You get lots of food for the price, enough to last two meals. Service is quick and friendly. read more

The food here is somewhat more authentic than some other chinese restaurants in the area. However, some dishes are too salty for my taste. I really enjoy the noodle soups that they offer. Tips: Bring cash! They charge an extra 5% for card. Dishes take a while, so order 30 minutes ahead! read more

Gin gins on Sheridan dr is authentic Chinese and there are some americanized dishes also. I started going for the bubble tea. While I love the bubble tea , the food is the star here. I got the oxtail soup with the rice noodles. It was nice to be able to choose the noodle I wanted. My family had a version of sesame chicken and a noodle dish . I also ordered the pancakes. The pancakes are savory and probably my favorite thing here. I often go back to get an order if I'm in the area. The oxtail soup is rich and complex . Big pieces of oxtail is throughout the dish. I can't say enough about how good it is. The portions are huge . I mean I had food for days. As always we had bubble tea . I get the dragon fruit. Sweet but yummy. Gin gins is so worth the time to get there . If you live near by it's a must! read more

The food was decent, BUT THE PRICES ARE RIDICULOUS! Chicken dishes are made with fatty and tough cuts of meat and overly breaded. Noodle dishes are greasy and overcooked. Take out orders usually take over an hour. Dumplings are decent, but if you order a chicken dish, a soup, some dumplings and egg rolls you are easily looking at 60+ dollars. Sometimes the food is pretty fresh, other times you can taste the age of meat. I do feel that Asian people who come to the restaurant are served much more quickly than other types of people. This is not a review based on one experience. I have ordered food several times hoping that I was overcharged in error, or that the meat would taste fresh. I am always dismayed. They do not give you a total over the phone, and take 3-5 minutes to "calculate" the total. The sum is always GREATLY more than Emmy own calculations. Disappointed, this plate used to be a favorite, but it is overpriced, greasy, low-quality with poor service. This is the worst and overpriced Chinese food in Buffalo. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND GOING ELSEWHERE AS THEY WILL AT KEAST HONOR THE MENU PRICES. read more

Chinese Food establishments are a dime a dozen. Find one that's noteworthy is a different story. I was introduced to one of two Chinese restaurants during my first patronage to Buffalo, luckily one of the two was Gin Gin's. I'll avoid going into the details of the establishment as the restaurant is seemingly similar to most take out establishments. What I will mention of Gin Gin's is the kindness and great service I receive during each of my visits to the restaurant. The owner (on every occasion) always asked how I was doing, when I would graduate, etc... This was on top of asking my order. Perhaps her petite stature and kind personality reminded me much of my own mother. Nevertheless, her genuine personality always dictated I return to fill my Chinese food cravings, if not the friendly conversation. The Food: Sesame Chicken: Excellent textural contrast and flavors. The Sesame Chicken had a slight heartiness in both it's presentation and consumption. Patrons will find that the sauce in the application has a discerning yet welcoming sweetness that works well in the dish. The textural contrast of the chciken should also be applauded. With a slight crispy exterior that alleviates into a moist juicy chicken center, the dish provides a slightly welcoming heartiness when consumed. Beef & Eggplant in Garlic Sauce: Spicy & robust are two terms that come to mind. The application provides a perfect balance of heat that's derived from the Garlic Sauce and earthiness from the seared Eggplant. The slight meatiness from the beef gives the application a wonderful textural contrast. Furthermore, the perfectly cooked Eggplant absorbed the proper amount of oil that when consumed, alleviates the proper amount of Garlic Sauce that helps to further stimulate the palate. Sauteed Beef Chow Fun (No Vegetables): Overly spicy and hearty! Just the way the application is supposed to taste. The pan fried rice noodle works remarkably well in absorbing the robust spice derived from the Sauteed Beef marinade. Patrons will find that the smooth texture of the noodles will coat the tongue to further enhance the spiciness and richness in flavors of the application. The beef in the dish provides a nice meatiness and textural contrast that brings the entire dish together. Notes on Gin Gin's: - Portion sizes are massive. Suggest eating as 3 servings. - Prices: Slightly above Amherst norms but worth it for the flavors - Customer Service: The owner is kind and sweet. Take a minute to introduce yourself. read more

I love this restaurant. It was hard to find a great place for Asian food in Buffalo, but I have found my Asian food-love in Gin Gin. Ohh the awesome shrimp wonton soup - takes 20 minutes to make cause its all hand made fresh to order... 8 golf ball size shrimp and pork wontons in a deletable chicken broth!! Nothing is carried over to the next day according to the friendly female owner/front end manager who, with her chef husband co-owner craft some serious chow! Anything "chop" on the menu is a good bet, curry is mild and fragrant, Ma Po tofu, chow fun...over 200 dishes. Some Chino-american, some totally authentic .. I like salt and pepper squid and congee as much as orange chicken....try the homemade milk tea. I haven't eaten my way through the menu, but I'm working on it. The place is clean, always busy, and provides the best service I have ever had in an Asian eatery. Try this humble joint - order at the counter, picka table, wait a bit more than usual, pay a bit more than usual, enjoy alot more that you would expect!!! Awesome! read more

We order soups...I.e. wonton and chicken noodle and they are always fresh and piping hot. The owners are always pleasant and cordial.

Oh, how do I love thee, scallion pancakes? And your beautiful tasty friend, chow fun? Gin Gin is Yum Yum!! A new all-cleaned location of my much beloved Gin-Gin Chinese restaurant. They now have bubble tea and tables you aren't scared to eat at. One star off for no delivery! Now located at corner of Sweet Home and Sheridan. read more

In a town that does NOT have a lot of great Chinese Food (with the exception of the Fort Erie Restaurants) Gin Gin truly stands out among the rest. They are not your average small Chinese Food Restaurant with two tables, an exceptionally dirty interior (which occasionally has a deer carcass dragged across it...yes I'm talking to you China King in Hamburg) and the small, yet obligatory Buffet. Gin Gin is a mix between counter service and sit down, with far more broad offerings than your average Chinese Restaurant (they even have Congee (rice soup) on their menu...I cant think of any other restaurant in town that serves Congee.) The menu here is HUGE. While the service can be very slow and confusing, this place is incredibly fun. The entire staff screams really loudly at each other in...Mandarin? So much so that it always seems as if a fight is about to erupt at any time...which to my great dismay never happens. However, I find it quite amusing while sipping my bubble tea (which they do serve...of course Tea Leaf Cafe around the corner does do a better job with broader offerings). While many rave about the wonderful dumplings here (which are quite delicious), my favorite on the menu is the noodle soup with pork and pickled vegetables. While it does not completely satisfy my craving for Ramen (which up till recently you could not get in Buffalo) it is REALLY REALLY good. This is a large bowl of flavorful broth, with Chinese pickled veggies (which are phenomenal), tender strips of pork over a large serving of very thin, yet chewy noodles. This is the PERFECT meal for those cold Buffalo evenings. They even place some hot chili oil and chili peppers on top for that added oomph of burn your ass goodness. Last time I was there I also enjoyed the fried wonton appetizer served with a slathering of savory sauce, ground pork and vegetables. It was hearty and great to share. I have had a few pitfalls at the restaurant though. I found some of the more standard stir fry dishes lack-lustre, while others being good at best. However, I will point out that they do use good cuts of meat so you wont be chewing on any nasty bits that should have been scrapped (like so many take-out joints do). I went for dim sum one weekend and found it ok. While many of the dumplings were delicious, the fried taro was poorly prepared, and nothing jumped out at me as satisfying that deep down dim sum urge. Maybe one day Buffalo will figure out dim sum. Overall though, I would steer you towards their noodle soups. They have a wide array and served in a traditional manner. This is quite a unique offering and something that should not be missed. read more

I've been to Gin Gin when they were at the deserted Tae Kwon Do plaza...until their new location at the corner of Sweethome and Sheridan Dr! Now that I am no longer in Buffalo, I miss it terribly! When I go back to visit, I make it a point to go back to visit!! They do have a authentic Chinese menu..and an American menu! Of course I just ordered Chinese dishes without looking at the menu...:) They have tofu with fish, chicken with this semi-spicy salty sauce, chicken with mushroom, spicy beef with eggs....good stuff that usually the Asian UB students order! They have ready-made milk tea and chrysathenum tea in the cooler....I highly recommend it!!! Yummy! The new place looks really oriental....you do not really smell like Chinese after eating! I like the new place...and the lady owner is so friendly and chatty! She always asked me how was school and if I was going back home...a good crowd of Asian students and locals! Tip-bit: If you see Asian people at a Chinese place, it's probably good! And if you are adventurous, ask to try something the Asians are having! :) You will probably be wondering how you ate General Tso's chicken all the years! read more

Oh how I miss you so. Having just moved from the area a few months ago. I have to drop some notes on my favorite place for chinese in Buffalo. If you are looking for some good tasting, worth the price, chinese food, GIn Gin is it. When I lived in Buffalo, I went to Gin Gin almost twice a week. It was an addiction of sorts. Before it changed locations, only a few of my friends knew about it, and it was a secret spot for good food. There were two menus at the time when i was there, it most likely still is the same. The menu to order from is the chinese menu, The one with chinese writing and some english splattered on there as well. There are some interesting things on there, which is all good, but my favorites were the chicken chops. There was chicken chop with salt and pepper, chicken chop with black bean sauce and chicken chop with curry. I always had it extra spicy, but you can make it as spicy as you like. MMMM... it is so well done and very plentiful for the price. I never left unsatisfied!! The owner of the restaurant is very friendly, we always had short conversations about nothing in particular, which was always nice. She is so proud of the new location and she should be, since its much bigger and cleaner than the first digs. When in Buffalo, I always have to get my Gin Gin fix. I can't wait to go back soon. read more

I love getting Chinese take out. On a bad day, nothing says "rock bottom" than getting some food that isn't good for you (at all) but is totally delicious. Being unimpressed with my takeout options nearby my house (N Buff) I decided that a venture out to the burbs was in order. I'd heard a lot about this spot and was excited to try it, but was a little intimidated by the menu. They have Americanized Chinese dishes along with some traditional meals. I've stopped by here two times and gotten items from the Americanized menu side. Both dishes were good, although I got the lobster sauce dish which I just personally didn't care for. The scallion pancake was so good that my husband and I ate the whole order while on our way home... then nearly brined ourselves because they were so salty. But good. The menu is LONG and they have legit bubble tea which is very yummy. Bring cash & call ahead. They accept credit but charge extra to run the card, which may be not so legal. Maybe next time I will finally venture into trying some of their traditional menu. read more

Love love love this place. Every time I visit my parents, this place is a must-go. I always get the chicken chop curry. It is so amazing that we have searched NYC high and low for something similar to it and have come up negative. It's this fried chicken dish that they mix with indian/chinese curry and the taste is unbelievable. They serve giant portions, but hey, just more chicken chop to eat at a later meal! The owner is really friendly, and recognizes my family since we've been going there for so long. She just laughs when we ask her for the chicken chop recipe. Grr. Wish we could convince her to open up shop closer to NYC! Just be prepared to wait when you go during peak hours - service can be a little slow. read more

I have tried a lot of their "Rices Dishes" on the back of the menu and so far, they've all tasted great. They give you plenty of food for the price, sometimes lasting me two meals, all for around 10 dollars. There is a plethora of options to try and some of my favorites are chicken chop satay, curry chicken chop and hot spicy beef with scrambled egg. Bring cash or they'll charge you extra for using card, the only gripe I have about this place. Otherwise, the food here keeps me going back! read more

Bite me. This place sucks. Their food is not good and their service is below par and their prices are ridiculous for Chinese food! The first time I came here, I got the roast pork noodle soup where the noodles were soggy, the soup base was tasteless and the roast pork was tough with lots of fat. The second time I came here, I got the bean curd and chicken in garlic sauce. The food was sour...good thing I didn't land myself a trip on the toilet that night. Is there service or is there not? Do we have to tip or do we not? Is this food safe to eat?! I'm going to make sure that I don't come here again unless I have no other choice. read more

I LOVE GIN GIN'S! It's a great place to come with some friends or just go out on a dinner date. It's not too far from UB either. The family that owns the restaurant is so nice! The service is a little strange in there if it's your first time. Just grab a menu, sit down, pick what you'd like (I suggest the lunch/dinner combo meals) and then order when you're ready. They bring the food to you. Ask for water or whatever if you'd like something to drink. There is no waiter service like other restaurants. I know kinda weird.. but still, they are very friendly and willing to give you the best service. Otherwise, the food is DELICIOUS. I always try to pick something different when I go there. So far I've tried the Mongolian beef and chicken, hot & spicy beef with scrambled eggs, black pepper beef, and seafood platter. Be careful with the Hot & Spicy Beef with Rice though... it is HOTT.! I've had the bubble tea from here twice. It was alright, not bad at all. Although, for bubble tea I'd go to Tea Leaf. It's right near the AMC Theater. read more

I've never eaten anything off of the Chinese American menu, so my only basis for this review is dim sum. Every time I've come here, the food has been delicious and on par with dim sum I've had in Toronto. Usually I always try to get fish balls, pork buns and some type of dumpling. The dumplings are always delicious, fresh and hot. On this visit, I branched out and tried the stuffed eggplant (a bit bland) and the stuffed crab claw--you can usually never go wrong with crab. If you're coming here, plan to come during dim sum hours on the weekend. The biggest drawback to Gin Gin is the service. I don't know how many people work the kitchen, but I'm assuming it's probably one and one more person to wait tables. If you come here when it's busy, plan to wait at least 40 minutes for your food. It's the only reason for 3 stars in this review. read more

I ordered beef with broccoli. The first bite I could already tell the beef was old beef. Dry, chewy, and had clumps of corn starch attached.

Overall it's a 3.5 stars, If your staying there I would give it a 3 stars, because service is extremely slow. I think it was more of service yourself type of style. However, I get take out because I don't really want to wait that long for Chinese food. It's reasonable price with combination: pork fried rice with either egg roll or soup. The soup I prefer is wonton soup! From there I get boneless rib, Singapore mei fun or beef chow fun. I really like the boss lady, she's very hard working! Tip: ask for the fortune cookie it's half chocolate! Very unique. read more

The hot & sour soup is a reason to keep on living. It's got ample pork, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and tofu... a real myriad of textures. It's hot! It's sweet! It's salty! It checks off so many boxes for me. Go get some! read more

Came here on the recommend of countless Yelpers one slow Sunday afternoon. My first impression was a bit underwhelming. The remnants of the morning's dim sum dumplings still sat on the center table, gathering flies, and the waitresses seemed tired and bored. Many of the tables seemed to be still dirty from breakfast. However, our food came out piping hot and in plentiful portions, and tasted just fine (I was craving sesame chicken, but I want to go back for some of the more interesting Chinese dishes other reviewers have mentioned). And my bubble tea, though it was the pre-packaged kind, was pretty tasty. So, consider this a review with intent to update (RWITU). Round one: three stars. Round two: who knows? read more

It's Sunday afternoon and you woke up late and want some good food, fast and because you spent a lot of money at the fair - cheap too, so you stop at GinGin's on Sheridan. Excellent choice. It's hassle free with an extensive menu, lots of choices. It was 2:30PM and the place was packed - large tables of families and friends enjoying a quick meal together. For $6.99 I ordered the lunch combo - shrimp cashew & rice, and it comes with soup. It was enough for two people and I even got change from my $10.00- whoopee! Can the place use a perking up inside and out - definitely yes...........can it stand to clean the tables better and clean the newspapers up, yes to that too, but it was fine because I just wanted to eat good food, cheap. read more

I probably eat there once every week or so, just to satisfy my chinese food fix. Very friendly service, which is unsual for a chinese restaurant.
