I got steamed dumplings, crab rangoons, hot and sour soup, and house special lo mein. Basically everything was fine. Nothing more, nothing less. I'd have hoped the hot and sour would have more "hot" (spice) in it. But it was definitely heat hit which was good. House special lo mein came with pork and shrimp and chicken and plenty of meat! The order came with a ton of soy sauce and duck sauce packets however I didn't get any hot mustard packets. I got takeout from here when my regular Chinese food place was closed for the day. Though this place was much pricier than my regular place, I was pleasantly surprised with their food. Especially the crab ragoons... Oh, those delicious, large, crispy, crab ragoons. They actually taste like crab and there is so much filling! Plus they do my favorite wonton fold with the 4 corners to create a star. Honestly, I would drive all the way here just to get 10 orders of crab ragoons. You get 6 in an order but that is plenty because they are so big! Egg rolls were cooked well and the general TSO was okay. We're trying a new place a week or so, especially places near our new house. My son wanted Chinese takeout, so we went with Hunan Wok. Not worth the money. Think most mediocre buffet and you have this food. Egg rolls were just dripping grease. The Hunan beef had zero spice; it tasted exactly like pepper beef, which I think is bland and hate. The general tsos needed garlic. It was over sweet and bland, and the broccoli was obliterated and olive green. The crab rangoons were fine,but their sweet and sour sauce is weird. It was slightly astringent, like biting into an unripe persimmon. A very bizarre occurrence for a common sauce. My son ordered plain noodles..Basically just lo mein sauce on noodles. The reason I gave 4 stars is because of the taste. It was different from the other Chinese places I have had. 3.5/5 on taste. The egg roll was not fully cooked, but that's ok. It's not the best customer service but the food definitely picks up where that lacks. I have tried the Lo-mein,fried rice,chicken wings,sesame chicken, shrimp and broccoli and egg-foo young. All very very good I must say. I would not suggesting eating there being that you literally have someone standing over you waiting for there food. If you order in store or on the phone good will be ready in 20 min top! Pricing is okay but again it good quality food that I would recommend and travel for this particular place. We were delighted to find this place - an alternative to the Golden Dragon just south of this location on Harlem. Hunan Wok serves piping hot, well made Cantonese and Szechuan dishes. The menu isn't all that different from other Chinese take-outs, but the food seems to be a cut above in execution - not as oily as other places' cooking. Portions are generous and there isn't any day-after congealing of cold gravy. I especially enjoyed their Singapore noodles (essentially curry stir fry noodles with lots of protein - shrimp, pork, chicken) as well as their beef/broccoli dish. Stay away from the sweet/sour pork - it's a generous portion of pork nuggets but they are overly buried in batter. The rib appetizer is also very good if uneven - some ribs are meaty, some ribs are practically just bone. We've ordered twice from here - once, I picked up my order - and Hunan Wok is located in the busy Tops parking lot off the twin Harlem Traffic Circles of Hell. The second time I ordered, I thought I'd be lazy and order delivery. I gave my card to them over the phone, and an hour later, their delivery person asked me to pay. When I explained that I had already paid when I ordered, he told me that my card was declined. Now, I use a debit card, so if I know that card is good. And IMHO, if a restaurant has a problem with a card, wouldn't they, shouldn't they call right back and let me know - especially before cooking and delivering the order? So we had this awkward standoff at my front door for 15 minutes in the rain while he called back and gave the restaurant my card number over and over. I've kept an eye on my account, worried about multiple charges, but this was an unfortunate experience I'd blame on a busy night as opposed to general service. The food is good. We'll order again. Shrimp toast was good. The Chicken Rice soup was amazing! One of the best I have ever had. Which left me excited for their Wonton but it was horrible. Very watery broth. May have been an off night, but even the wontons themselves did not taste good. Otherwise a great and cheap Chinese place. The reason why I give this place 2 stars is because of the "chow mein" and "chow fun." First, this restaurant have no noodles; therefore, chow mein and chow fun are not suitable to even be called chow main or chow fun. Instead, they give you white rice with the sauce. Secondly, I love their soup; however, my roommate would rather have the eggroll. Thus, taste perspective varies from person to person. Furthermore, here are some of my opinion on specific orders. Ever since my sister moved into the neighborhood of this place, we've been converted to getting Chinese takeout whenever my family gets together because all of their food, no matter what we order is always good. You know how it seems like fast food Chinese places are inconsistent a lot? Like, I don't know if it's a different cook, or a really busy night, or what, but most places I have tried will be good a few times and then suddenly out of nowhere disgusting... well this place is never like that. Also, it's not just a few good things, everything is good there. We've ordered a lot of different stuff too. A big favorite in my family is their chicken with mushrooms, and their General Tso's (a good test meal to order from anyplace, I think) is nice and spicy and not too tough. For what it's worth, I'd rather order the basic, cheap, fast food Chinese here then anywhere else in Buffalo. Oh, it also seems to only take 15 minutes every time we order. read more
