Welcome to your own personal "kitchen nightmares" episode. This used to be an OK place to go, nothing great, same old stuff, but you could count on it. I am not sure what has happened to the place, but it has gotten flat-out terrible. This was my 3rd , and final trip to this place. No more. Sunday afternoon, aprox 3:00pm a few customers, not at all busy. many of the stream table bins were nearly empty of product, and what was there was swimming in sauce. The fried butterfly shrimp were raw (translucent meat, cold) and mushy, obviously way underdone, frying oil had a distinct taste of old/burned oil. Ya, this was the good part of the trip. The shrimp in the salad bar were obviously rancid, completely mushy, strong fishy taste. Mmmm, rotten shellfish, always a family favourite. One other dish, I can't remember the name of it, had the taste of meat that had gone off too. Not just a little "old" but that sour, nasty way-over-the-hill flavour At that point, I gave up, we left before we got something we didn't want. Just to add humor to the whole trip, the guy at the front counter asked how it was, when we told him the only response was "ok" and giving us the price. Eat here at your own risk. This was my first time here with my dad, and the first impression is pretty good! The decor and overall vibe is very nice. The food is good and flavorful. There is also a fairly big variety of food, but not much for dessert. There is alot of space in there which is great for large groups. Service is great. Love the place it was clean. The food was hot. Great service. I don't know what all the crybaby and whining about the place. It's just like any other buffet. I didn't see one thing wrong bathrooms were clean. Plates were clean was the silverware was clean no food on the floor no piles of plates like that guy photo all his plates in a pile. Nothing like what anybody has said that's negative they should rate the people that go in there. That's what you should do because there was absolutely nothing wrong with the place you're just trying to make the people look bad and there's nothing wrong with it. Anybody that gives a one rating is a monster and obviously doesn't even leave a tip but will come here and spend his money and then go home and complain. absolutely zero complaints about the place all these negative reviews are straight up lies. The sign outside said $7.19 for lunch buffet. We're in town for the weekend so thought we'd try it. Food was mediocre at best. We each had buffet & I had pop. We got the check -it was $22.95! I asked manager (who spoke English) and she said "Oh that's Monday-Friday only. Saturday & Sunday it's $9.95!) I paid the tab & took this picture when we left. And also the bottoms of every chair were dusty-gross! We sat next to a window that was dirty, dusty & had dead flies on the ledge. Will never return. Not a bad joint for buffet Chinese food. There are tons of buffets in Brainerd for whatever reason. This is the best Chinese buffet in town. Has the usual fare to include ice cream machine and some American food. Decent quality and consistent (as I have been a repeat customer). That being said, they play the same two classical songs on repeat! Arg! Service ok. This time around going solo they were reluctant to give me a booth upon request. But I insisted. A typical Chinese buffet. We spent a night at Brainerd's Holiday Inn Express water park, and had the craving of some Chinese lo mien stuffs for the evening. For $9+ the dinner buffet is a good deal. They do have limited seafood and little sushi, but do not expect too much on those. They do charge extra for beverage and soda though. The lo mien, and the Chinese foods are excellent. I am surprise that they do not have fried chicken wings, which is typical to most Chinese buffet. I do agree to some other reviews mentioning about the lack of refilling the foods, or keeping them fresh. Speak out, guys. I talk to the waitress for what we like and she promptly tell the kitchen and they made extra for what we wanted. read more

I require a Service dog due to my PTSD and was refused service after they asked me for a "service dog license". When I refused to produce that, which is not a thing, and is not required, they told me they would not allow my dog to accompany me. I attempted to explain the laws and educate, which I have had to do previously, but no one let me speak. I was denied service and filed with the ADA over it. The buffet is three stars at best but to be fair I have never been to a Chinese Buffet in Minnesota that was better than that. But this place really shines when you skip the buffet and order off of the menu. Great portions, freshly prepared, wonderfully seasoned, and reasonably priced. China Garden is great. We ordered the fried dumplings, vegetable egg foo yong, general tso's chicken dinner special (comes with an egg roll and pork/chicken fried rice or white rice). But get this, they delivered to the Comfort Suites. All of this cost $21. Unheard of. The food was worth every penny. It wasn't overly greasy or bland. While the Tso's chicken wasn't as spicy as I would have liked, I still enjoyed it. I would order from here again. read more

I have only eaten at a handful of Chinese buffets in Minnesota, but I was pleasantly surprised with this one. There was a wide selection of food; a few I hadn't seen before at other buffets, and loved it all. The staff was on the ball, taking plates away almost as soon as they were emptied, and I particularly loved the classical music and coy fountain. We dined right at dinner time, so that might be why I did not experience some of the problems the other reviewers are having. Definitely will be making a return trip soon. read more

Honestly, I really don't like seeing all the negative reviews for this restaurant. Is it a 5 star fine dining restaurant? Absolutely not. But it's a small business restaurant in a small town. I live in the Twin Cities and every time I go up north I get excited to go here. It isn't anything special. But I've been there so many times and I love the food. Took two 9 year olds and a 5 year old at 6pm. Got seated immediately and our 3 waters and 1 Dr. Pepper came right away. There was a wide variety of foods to choose from. The kids had no problem finding something to eat. Their favorite thing was the meatballs and sweet and sour chicken. I liked the general's chicken and the beef mushrooms. First pulling in the parking lot, the style of the restutaunt was modern and kept up overall looking nice. As me and my family walked inside, the same clean simple modern design applied. It was one of the better kept up Chinese establishments I've been too. Enough about the looks, and off to the food. Overall there was a good selection of food, about average as any buffet. I went out to eat here for my birthday with some friends. The food was cold, I ate a couple bites from my plate, and never even went back up to the buffet for a second plate. The server came and asked to take my plate which was still almost completely full and then quickly dropped the check and walked away. When I went to the counter to check out the lady asked how everything was (the server never did) and I told her I didn't really eat, and the food was cold. I wasn't trying to get anything for free. I intended on paying the full price, I know sometimes these things happen with a buffet but she asked me how everything was so I told her. I wasn't going to lie and say it was amazing when it wasn't. I was very disappointed, especially since it was for my birthday. The cashier began to snap at me and tell me that I should have spoke up and telling me she would take my meal off this time but not next time and then began speaking angrily in Chinese to our server. Yet another local brainerd business that discriminated against me because I have a service dog. I was first rudely asked to see papers proving harley was a service dog, then myself and my friends were moved to a spot as far away from the food as possible. To top it off when i went to get my food i was rudely told i can't have harley with me cause she might get hair on the food. I read what the Americans with Disabilities act says about service dogs to the lady and she got very argumentative so I decided to leave rather then escalate the situation. As far as Chinese buffets, it's good, however the mold on the window sills are a little troublesome.

We won't be returning. Tonight we came at 5:15 pm and all the food was cold as well as the tea. This is the second time this happened.
