We had... Jiaozi de la Chacra (Chifa) - Cilantro dumpling, seasonal vegetables & ají rocoto. Pegao Norteño (Criollo) - Lamb pot sticker, aderezo norteño, crispy cumin lace & gold flakes. California (Nikkei) - Potato causa, jumbo lump crab, spicy mayo, cucumber, avocado, tobiko & huancaína sauce. I was craving Peruvian food and so we got a reservation here for my birthday. Upon entry, there is a lot going on and a lot to look at. We got seated right away at a spot near the window. For a reservation for three though, the spot overall felt very cramped and kind of pushed into the corner. The waitress & waiter that took our order were literally right next to this pole our table was squished next to the entire time and it literally felt like they were hovering the whole meal. We ordered the Lomo Saltado and the Aeropuerto to share since we weren't overly hungry. Overall, the portions were kind of small but it was enough for us. If you plan on sharing (and are hungry) would definitely order at least one entree per person. I was definitely disappointed with the Lomo as it was the dish I was most looking towards. After traveling to Peru a number of times, Lomo Saltado is one of my comfort foods that remind me of my fond memories in Lima...but it definitely fell short here - it was way too salty and while the meat was tender there were literally five pieces in the bowl. The fries were also super soggy from the sauce and they didn't have any aji verde. The Aeropuerto definitely stole the show at it was a table favorite. But overall, I felt like the food could have been better (they also could offer aji verde since it's a Peruvian fusion restaurant). We also put in the reservation and told the waitstaff it was my birthday, but sadly there was no celebration or anything (not even a happy birthday), they just smiled and went about their business. It felt like there was just no attention to their customers. While my experience fell short, I would come back as the menu has a lot to offer and I'm curious as to how some of the other items on the menu taste (like the chifa items). A very confusing sauce experience. I ordered 2 plates: the wontons and the potatoes. The wontons came with a delicious tamarind sauce that was so good that I had to ask the waiter for the name. The next plate arrived, bearing about 5 thick cold slices of potato drowned in a bland yellow sauce of indeterminate origin, sprinkled with feta as though daring me to think it a meal. I am too confused to feel angry about this, but I did pay $10 to basically eat.....sauce soup? Proceed at your own risk. The service was great though! read more

If you have been to a José Andrés restaurant then you know you can expect good tastes in sharable portions. The lazy susan turntables at the larger tables are a welcome tool in this experience. It all starts with complementary seasoned roasted corn kernels which are more addicting than you may assume. Our large group ordered across the menu here's the rundown: Dancing Yucca: why is it dancing? The bonito flakes! Not your Pollo joint's Yucca fries. Salmon Tiradito: A great ceviche Salmon treatment where the richness of the salmon comes through without overpowering with sour. Lucky 12 Siu Mai: A great sampler and a familiar taste to anyone that has enjoyed Dim Sum Lomo Saltado: The most fusion of the dishes: the traditional potato, sirloin stir fry but emphasizes the soy sauce more than the tomato in the dish. I would recommend plating it onto the rice (served on the side) vs. dumping the rice into the bowl like I did since there is a Iot of sauce in the dish that can overpower the rice. While out as a group and looking for some good happy hour deals prior to dinner nearby, we stopped in here... It's a Jose Andreas joint + It's a Chinese/Peruvian fusion = Had To Be AMAZING! Upon walking in, there were several seats at the bar which accommodated our group perfectly and we were immediately greeted by Johannes who was our bartender for the evening. He was OUTSTANDING! One of the better bartenders we've encountered in our many many trips to DC bars & restaurants. He was very helpful, extremely knowledgeable (about everything from their unique menu to the origin of Pisco and many other cocktails, mixers and alcohols they serve) and paid great attention to our group to ensure we enjoyed our visit. Their happy hour is a really nice deal, their unique Pisco cocktails are awesome and served at an amazing price! Bottom Line: Heard about this from many people as a must try and they did not disappoint! Loved our dishes that are their highlights. Even as takeout, it's done well! Will 100% return again. We went for some of the common favorites that we found on Yelp. These included: - Dancing Yucca: exactly how yucca fries should taste with great Asian take to dipping sauces including an eel sauce. Highly recommend as a sharing among friends - Ceviche Nikkei: you must get at least one ceviche and with so many on their menu, it's hard to decide. So we went with our usual favorite, tuna, which didn't disappoint. This is a classic and super tasty. Ponzu sauce was a killer! - Kam Lu Wantan: nice pockets of fried yumminess where you can actually taste the shrimp and pork. Many wontons it's just so mixed that it tastes meaty, but we definitely tasted the shrimp. The sweet-spicy dipping sauce was firreeee! - Lomo Saltado: a peruvian classic, this was super tasty, but can also be ordered in many other Peruvian chicken places. Fun vibe and clearly popular, but we weren't the biggest fans of the food. The cauliflower and corn definitely felt Chinese in flavor, and the dumplings and ceviche were well done. However, every dish was pretty salty, and nothing was a standout. The bathrooms did have a fun energy with fun house mirrors and chalkboard walls. Really yummy food! Came here with a group of 7 and ordered lots of different dishes. My only quip is that the portion sizes are pretty small, especially the noodle bowls. This was my first time here and I was excited to experience the Peruvian, Japanese and Chinese cuisine on the menu. Server was friendly and checked with us a couple of times to make sure we were fine throughout the dinner. Someone else brought out the the appetizer - Ceviche Classico and the main entree. The Ceviche Classico appetizer was unexpectedly too spicy. But the seafood was fresh and the dish was still tasty but overpowered by the unbalanced input of spice. Unfortunately, within two minutes of the appetizer being placed on the table the main entree was also brought out and set on the table. So the table was immediately overcrowded and this took away from the experience of the enjoying the appetizer and the meal. I ordered as my main entree the Ají de Gallina which is described on the menu as Peru's most precious dish. This was a hearty bowl of chicken and rice stew which is definitely a bowl of comfort. The nut based sauce with pecans tasted good enough but I believe following the traditional walnut based sauce would have been better. No bread basket offered before the meal - I assume because the meal came very quickly but unfortunately as I mentioned above - too quickly as the appetizer and entree were all pretty much served at the same time. I didn't stay for dessert. I would say the food was good and filling. The service was a bit subpar due to the poor timing of the service of the food. I felt that my hunger was satisfied but I did not leave feeling like I had to return for my dish or the ambiance and experience of eating here. So for that I knocked off two stars because a big part of eating at a restaurant is the experience, the plating of the food and timing of service. So final is a solid 3 stars. Sashimi came with 1 soy sauce pet order which is a no no, they expected 8-9 ppl all dip their chopsticks inside 1 small sauce tray, gross. Ceviche didn't taste fresh even under heavily lemon juiced sauce. "Chicken shumai" what? You will never find this in any Japanese or Chinese restaurant, props to Peruvian fusion LOL. Lomo saltado was the only dish everyone at table liked. And the best part, they offer sake on the menu, but didn't have any sake cup, instead they gave us WINE glass to drink SAKE no no no. I came here tonight with a group of international friends. I ordered the lomo saltado and a Maracuya Sour. I have been to Lima, Peru quite a bit so very familiar with Peruvian food. The Pisco Sour was good. The Lomo Saltado was served in a little different form than what I'm used to but it was fine. The Lomo Saltado stayed hot for a long time and was good throughout. I was surprised how long it stayed hot from the kitchen. We all had a good time. I'd be interested to go back and try something else. read more

Was in DC back in August, with a group of college friends - one lives in DC, and is friends with FOH staff. We went in for a lil' snacky prior to Saturday night out on the town. Instead, we left stuffed with yummy, fantastic, incredible and interesting foods. It was awhile ago, so I regret that I cannot remember all of the lovely things we ingested, but let me tell you, I have raved about this place on at least 3 occasions to my husband, who was not on said trip, and we have no plans (yet!) to go to DC. But we will, and we will eat here, and I will rave again. While I cannot remember all of the exact dishes, I do recall it all being flavorful, interesting, and perfectly prepared in presentation and temperature. And, I was about 19 weeks pregnant, and unable to partake in the fun of the cocktail menu, but they were so much fun and so kind in recommending and making great mocktail and non-alcoholic beverages so I didn't just have to drink water with lemon. What a cool concept! Two things I love: Chinese and Peruvian food. The atmosphere was very fun and colorful. I went for an early lunch before going to a show at Sidney Harman Hall (it's a convenient location if you need somewhere to eat before or after a show there). It wasn't very busy at the time I went, but it was 11 am lol For an appetizer I had the HaKao dumplings (under the dim sum options). I'm not sure if they were meant to be soup dumplings, but they had a lot of soup in them. They were great! For my main dish I had the Aeropuerto. It was really good, with some nice crunch, but it was WAY (and I mean way) too salty. I legitimately drank a gallon of water afterwards. I think I will need to return to try some of their Peruvian options in order to assess if this review remains 4 stars or can be elevated to 5. I also would have liked to have seen more crossover between the two cuisines. All in all it was a fun meal and incidentally José Andrés was throwing the first pitch (game 5 of the World Series) at the Nats (champions!) game that day so that was kind of cool! read more

Came in for dinner with a group of 4 which was perfect for this menu only tapas. We ordered many things and shared which is certainly the way to go. My favorite dish was definitely the dim sum with the quail egg on top (dorado). Wow! I would come back just for that dish. Surprisingly, I also enjoyed the causa limena. It's like mashed potatoes with just the right amount of citrus added over top of chicken salad with pieces of avocado. Not something I would have ordered but glad someone else in my party did. Definitely get a ceviche. The clasico was nice. We ordered all three desserts on the menu and enjoyed every bite. All the popsicle flavors were great. The suspiro limena was my favorite dessert. The little meringue pieces taste like astronaut ice cream and the flavors blend so well. And if you want a drink, their pisco sour is just right. When you first see this place you see Peruvian Asian Fusion, how unique is that!! Instantly caught my eye and has been on my list as a must try for some time. I was so curious as to how these two cuisines could be combined in an exotic menu. Upon arriving, we luckily made it in time for happy hour! Great happy hour menu, and great deals for a quick bite and drink. We ordered a couple drinks and decided to move to the dining area for dinner. We had eaten a few snacks prior to coming so we weren't nearly hungry enough for the tasting menu (but I certainly will be returning for that because it sounds divine). We ordered an assortment of appetizers, my favorite was definitely the Schezuan Chili Wontons. The best way to describe it - they melt in your mouth....enough said. Absolutely delicious! Also tried the yucca fries which were topped with an array of sweet and spicy and savory sauces. What a combo! The ceviche we ordered was absolutely fresh and tasty, very light and not too overpowering. Not sure of the name, but it is the last ceviche on the menu! For dessert, we tried the push pops - they gave us one for free, so sweet. My favorite out of the two was horchata, it is a must try! Staff was so incredibly friendly, and the place was bustling. Came here for lunch on a recent trip to DC! I'm a huge fan of Jose Andres' restaurants, so I was definitely excited for this one! I went with the 3-course lunch special, which is a great deal - also stays true to its "in and out in an hour," if you happen to be in a rush! For my starter, I had the siu mai pollo - really delicious, my only complaint is that I wish it came with more pieces! The highlight for me, however, was the entree - I got the aeropuerto, which can best be described as a fried rice/fried noodle stir fry combo, with cute little airplane-shaped veggies inside. Super tasty and relatively healthy, too - this will definitely be my go-to when I come back! For dessert, I had the suspiro limena, which was similar to a caramel custard topped with passion fruit meringue. A very interesting mix of sour and sweet - also worth a try. We stopped in for a weekday lunch but managed to try many dishes almost tapas style during our visit. My only complaint on arrival was we weren't greeted right away and were ignored for a couple awkward minutes. After that, the experience couldn't have been better! We started with a couple different cocktails, the Pisco Sour and a Pisco Sour with an addition. They were both fantastic and delivered quickly. Then we each ordered a different ceviche (Classico and the Japanese). Amazing! The Classico was my favorite thing all day. Next we asked the chef if he could prepare the octopus carpaccio from the dinner menu, to which he agreed. It didn't disappoint! That was my wife's favorite. For our next adventure, we got some Szechuan chili dumplings. Those were very delicate but packed a nice flavor. Lastly, we got the Lomo Saltado as the "heaviest" course. It was sooooo flavorful with a fatty broth, but was balanced nicely by the freshness of the onion and a lime acidity. We were stuffed! For dessert, we got the suspiro Limena. We were amazed by the combination of thick caramel with tartness of the passion fruit. Would have never thought of it, but it was truly delectable and a great finish. Getting into this restaurant on a Friday night for dinner is hard! I had high expectations when the only time we could get a reservation for a day in advance was at 8:15pm. They weren't ready for us when we arrived so we sat at the bar and ordered a drink until we were able to be seated about 30 minutes later. The staff at the bar were friendly but the drinks were definitely D.C. priced! The dinner menu is expansive and I was excited to try their 12 piece dim sum variety option. I really enjoyed all the dim sum minus the one with the small egg on top - flavor was okay, it was more of a texture thing. We also tried their stew which I thought was really good! I knocked two stars off the review because of our long wait to be seated with a reservation and the temperature inside the restaurant.
