The fact that they use the term "oriental" to describe their cuisine speaks volumes. I ordered an array of items to try, and each one was more disappointing than the previous one. It seemed like the chef just put popular dish items on the menu and then whipped up whatever he/she had back there. At one point, I honestly thought I was being punked...that some of the dishes were a joke. See photos of my food items to judge for yourself. The "chow mein" is especially embarrassing. To add insult to injury, each dish is upwards of $11, and you could pan fry some top ramen noodles that tasted better than these dishes. The entire restaurant staff was Caucasian, including one of the chefs, who I saw come from the kitchen to hand deliver a take-out order. I have a hard time coming to terms with believing that this is what Midwest folks think is Asian cuisine, let alone GOOD Asian cuisine, especially when you have a decent Chinese buffet down the street. I have NO problem with restaurants serving "homemade" food, but don't try to pawn it off as anything remotely "oriental" when you haven't even made a basic attempt to recreate anything with any semblance of Asian flavor. I will say this - the staff was extremely warm and friendly, and the customer service was great. But sadly, that's not enough to get me to return.

As an Asian American, and with this being a Vietnamese-centered restaurant, I almost always order the pho. The rare steak pho is my go-to, and it does not disappoint. The broth is rich, aromatic, and very authentic, and the soup comes with all the proper garnishments: Thai basil, cilantro, mung bean sprouts, lime, hoisin sauce, and sriracha. It's comforting in the way good pho should be. The fried dumplings are also worth ordering, with a generous portion and solid flavor. Service here is very good, especially considering how busy it can get during the weekend dinner rush. The staff stays attentive and efficient without making the experience feel rushed. There's no formal parking lot, but street parking nearby is plentiful and hasn't been an issue. If you're in Virginia and craving Vietnamese food that goes beyond the usual Midwest defaults, Saigon Cafe is absolutely worth supporting.

Please choose an establishment that doesn't respond to negative reviews in this way! ] My partner and I (locals) brought my in-laws from Texas here and had a bizarre experience. We wanted to show them our favorite Friday fish fry and unfortunately, one of the items (steak kebab) came out overdone. We politely let our waitress know and she brought out the owner, Fitz. Fitz asked MIL to cut the steak for him multiple times and argued that it was perfect since his wife cuts the meat every morning. Frustrated with how MIL was being treated, my partner asked Fitz to get her fish instead and be done with it. After a bit of back and forth and raised voices on both sides, my partner apologized and began explaining his protectiveness by telling him that MIL is currently going through chemotherapy. Instead of de-escalating the situation, Fitz leaned over the table and sneered, "I'm sorry you have cancer, I had cancer too!" at MIL. After that comment, my partner got up and left. Fitz followed him outside and from my view, jumped into a fighting stance and raised his fists at my partner. We walked away after that. Such a disappointing and most importantly, embarassing experience to have with visitors. Just stick to Whistling Bird if you're in town.
