"Supper Club". (Wikipedia) "In the U.S., a supper club is a dining establishment generally found in the Upper Midwestern states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan, and Iowa. These establishments typically are located on the edge of town in rural areas.[1] They were traditionally thought of as a "destination" where patrons would go to spend the whole evening, from cocktail hour to enjoying night club style entertainment after dinner.[2] They feature a casual and relaxed atmosphere." Well, I don't know about the 'entertainment', but I've been in my share of supper clubs in the Upper Midwest. In Iowa, we used to joke there were five things on every menu: ham, ribeye, chicken, catfish, and pork chops. Period. Wasn't so bad, as I remember. Especially in the smaller towns of Iowa. My first introduction to catfish as something other than bait, as a matter of fact. Ate a lot of it living in Louisiana, not so much in Oregon, where it's $8 a pound! Kawika hit "da range" (Minnesotan for "The Iron Range", the nest of small towns around the old iron ore mines in Northern Minnesota), and his visit included lunch at Valentini's Supper Clubin the town of Chisholm. Chisholm was founded around 1900 and had a peak population of over 6,000. It was nearly completely erased from the map by a fast moving forest fire in 1908. Chisholm became a city in 1934, and today's population stands around 5k. Valentini's is the go-to place on the Iron Range for traditional Italian. Kawika went with the penne with house made Italian sausage and peppers. Loved it all, including the fresh bread from Sunrise Bakery in Hibbing, MN, also the birthplace of Sammy's Pizza, and hometown of the late food mogul, Jeno Paulucci. Valentini's has an affiliated location in Duluth.

My wife and I staying in our Lake Home at Superior Shores over Valentine's Day weekend felt…read morecompelled to go out for a romantic dinner. I had suggested going to our usual go to, the Ledge Rock Grill at Larsmont. My wife insisted staying closer to home and taking advantage of the Valentines seven course dinner menu at Vue North in Superior Shores Resort. We got to the restaurant and were promptly seated at a window table as requested in our reservation. Being a true foodie from way back, I always opt for a well prepared gourmet meal as opposed to a standard menu. I have to admit I was skeptical when I booked the reservation, but am pleased to say the current Chef hit it out of the park. Every course was over the top and a clear ten. Obviously a lot of thought and talent went into both the creation of the menu and preparation of each course. I haven't had a gourmet meal of this caliber in years. The ambiance was excellent, the service was great, and each course was a ten!

We stopped by on the way home from Split Rock Lighthouse, with the mistaken notion that traffic…read morewould dissipate as we at our meal. (How foolish we were.) Still, I don't regret going here. We sat by a window with a decent view of the water and plenty of light. Our server was very friendly and helpful. While we waited for our food, we walked out on the deck, which led to scenic marshy areas with trails. I ordered beet wellington with arugula, and my spouse had a chicken dish with risotto. Just half of the beet wellington with the arugula was enough to fill me up. I liked the beet wellington, but it would have been better if they figured out a way to season the beet. Maybe pierce it and marinate it a bit? The chicken and risotto were also good. If we were hungrier, we would have supplemented these dishes with more vegetables. This was a nice place to stop before returning on a long drive home. We enjoyed relaxing in the spacious dining room with evocative upscale cabin decor. As I finished typing this, my spouse chimed in, "Not amazing, but pretty good." And in a touristy area where restaurant quality can be hit or miss, pretty good is exactly that: pretty good. We'll take it.

We ended up ordering a pick two with a chipotle chicken sandwitch and broccli cheader soup. My boyfriend ordered a turkey sandwich which looked and smelled amazing. I am always amazed by the cozy feel of the dining room. There is also a wonderful little place for outdoor seating on a sunny day. I'm sure in the winter the fireplace gives a warm feel to the dining area too. Our food actually tasted amazing and I was very greatful for their seasonal tea assortment in addition to the soda fountain for a healthier choice in food. This is just a adorable place that I was pleasantly surprised with and will be back to on a regular basis.

the food is as any Panera. the difference here compared to all other Paneras (I am from STL,…read moreheadquarters) is that in Duluth the manager will make drive through customers wait for an average of 20 minutes plus rather than utilize the drive through perking spot for large or time suck orders. So, even to pick up a bowl of soup you will be forced to wait for the entire large and or diverse order of the vehicle three lengths ahead. Please redirect the business logic of the shift or store manager. It's truly ridiculous!
