Delicious! Friendly! Homey! I ordered the wall-eye, which is a weird sounding fish caught locally, and it came with a homemade noodle soup, fresh beans and a nicely baked potato. Also, my favorite cocktail, a Rusty Nail, was prepared perfectly. Oh, and they have Spumoni for dessert! I try not to give 5 stars too often, but when a restaurant does everything well, with local ingredients in a fun atmosphere, wow! That beats all the ridiculous edgy decor, snooty servers, over-priced cocktails and often bizarre menu items at famous city restaurants. Absolutely 5 stars! read more

Had the fish fry i didn't care for the breading on the fried fish so had the broiled fish which was way better the baked potato could use longer bake time as it was still hard and not the first time it's had been every time but still recommend the broiled fish. Lots of food, so come hungry. This was our first experience eating at a supper club. They had pretty decent portions and we were stuffed when we left. We had the mozzarella sticks for an app, which came with marinara dipping sauce. They were nice and crispy with a pretty good cheese pull. For our main course we had the prime rib special and it was melt in your mouth good. For dessert my husband had a sundae and I had the homemade tiramisu. The tiramisu was so good! These establishments typically are located on the edge of town in rural areas.[1] They were traditionally thought of as a "destination" where patrons would go to spend the whole evening, from cocktail hour to enjoying night club style entertainment after dinner.[2] They feature a casual and relaxed atmosphere." Well, I don't know about the 'entertainment', but I've been in my share of supper clubs in the Upper Midwest. In Iowa, we used to joke there were five things on every menu: ham, ribeye, chicken, catfish, and pork chops. Period. Wasn't so bad, as I remember. Especially in the smaller towns of Iowa. My first introduction to catfish as something other than bait, as a matter of fact. Ate a lot of it living in Louisiana, not so much in Oregon, where it's $8 a pound! Kawika hit "da range" (Minnesotan for "The Iron Range", the nest of small towns around the old iron ore mines in Northern Minnesota), and his visit included lunch at Valentini's Supper Clubin the town of Chisholm. Chisholm was founded around 1900 and had a peak population of over 6,000. It was nearly completely erased from the map by a fast moving forest fire in 1908. Chisholm became a city in 1934, and today's population stands around 5k. Valentini's is the go-to place on the Iron Range for traditional Italian. Kawika went with the penne with house made Italian sausage and peppers. Loved it all, including the fresh bread from Sunrise Bakery in Hibbing, MN, also the birthplace of Sammy's Pizza, and hometown of the late food mogul, Jeno Paulucci. My first experience at Valentini's was fantastic! The place was packed busy (we even had to be seated in a different room), and yet service was still quick and flawless! This place is so hit or miss I always question whether to even come. Some visits it is beyond amazing and other visits it's mediocre at best. This past visit was the latter. We got the two specials of the day a pork fettuccini and an Italian sub. There was no additional description with the pork fettuccini and I didn't think to ask, so imagine my surprise when it's basically a pork stir fry filled with mushy vegetables served over noodles. The Italian sub was actually worse.... if you can believe that.... almost no meat, no cheese, seemed like day-old bread at least. I've purchased better subs from Walmart. Sorry... I know this place is a staple of the community and it can produce outstanding food, but it is so inconsistent I could never recommend it. read more

If you are ever in northern MN this is an excellent choice for dinner. the front half of the establishment is a bar and the back half is the dining room. We ate in the back half of the dining room. the restaurant has a small but good wine list and the food is mostly Italian. They have a nice variety of appetizers. We enjoyed the stuffed mushrooms on the recommendation of the waitress and they were very good. I tried the combination platter. The red sauce on the cheese ravioli was good, not too spicy or salty. The Alfredo sauce was well done, a tad dry. Nothing on the menu for dinner is to pricey. I think the most expensive meal on the menu was a steak item and that entree was around $20.00 For the price, location and quality I recommend this place for dinner. read more

Avoid this place!!!first time ever in this place and the whole experience was a joke.Walking in it looks a run down, I waited for a few minutes before the waitress acknowledged me. Asked for what beverage I would like. She came back a few minutes later to take my order, then she was gone in an instant. Place didn't smell Italian at all, the smell was a lingering nasty smell. I can't put my finger on it what the smell is. But it's atrocious. When the waitress came back with my food it looked appealing. Looks can be deceiving! I ordered the sausage and pepper pene; horrible! Very bland, noodles weren't fully cooked. I arrived at 1210 for lunch and had to get back to a meeting at 1. The waitress finally came around and asked me how it was. I replied, it was gross. She took it out of my way and asked if I wanted anything else. I replied no thank you. I then received the bill. For only taking 3 bites I was charged for the full dinner. The waitress never came back. I had to walk to the register and staff walked by never questioning why I was standing there. Finally a blonde woman walked to me and asked if she could help me with anything. I gave her the run down and went back to the kitchen to talk to I would assume be the owner. I explained to him the dinner I just had. His response, " you ordered an item you don't like"? You don't like sausage, peppers, etc naming ingredients. I explained I did my explaining and he immediately responded, this is our famous dish". And he just chucked the bill in the trash. And said whatever to the whole situation. Awesome place to eat! I started eating here as they sponsored the Iron Range Ironheads junior hockey team that I coached with. After every practice and before every home game, we ate here. The waitress was nice and very good and I don't like confrontations so I asked for a take away carton and just thru it away. Kind of expensive and I still have this lingering feeling of disgust.
