[ After posting my full review to a local community page, the owners appeared to dox my partner and share an appalling version of the events that transpired. Please choose an establishment that doesn't respond to negative reviews in this way! ] My partner and I (locals) brought my in-laws from Texas here and had a bizarre experience. We wanted to show them our favorite Friday fish fry and unfortunately, one of the items (steak kebab) came out overdone. We politely let our waitress know and she brought out the owner, Fitz. Fitz asked MIL to cut the steak for him multiple times and argued that it was perfect since his wife cuts the meat every morning. Frustrated with how MIL was being treated, my partner asked Fitz to get her fish instead and be done with it. After a bit of back and forth and raised voices on both sides, my partner apologized and began explaining his protectiveness by telling him that MIL is currently going through chemotherapy. Instead of de-escalating the situation, Fitz leaned over the table and sneered, "I'm sorry you have cancer, I had cancer too!" at MIL. After that comment, my partner got up and left. Fitz followed him outside and from my view, jumped into a fighting stance and raised his fists at my partner. We walked away after that. Such a disappointing and most importantly, embarassing experience to have with visitors. Just stick to Whistling Bird if you're in town. read more

Worst service every received. The red head waitress accused me of trying to get a free meal. The steak was too hard to eat. Lobster tail was great. Childs corn dog was frozen still. Drinks weren't refilled. We had to ask for our salad. Our dirty dishes sat while we waited for the check. read more

We eat here frequently. We love visiting with other locals and visitors to the area the same. Wait staff and employees along with Owners always make everyone feel welcomed. The place is cozy in the winter and relaxing in the summer. My boy loves his usual booth which the staff entertains him. Stop by... and say hello and visit with all that are visiting. Your staff knew that our family member was gluten free when entrees where ordered. it seems you are just incapable of adjusting to your guest's needs. if you had just provided the guest with an appropriate birthday dessert, this all could have been avoided. And if you think your customers are interested in accurate information, you approached my husband, with defiance. He never touched you, and while we were sitting several feet away, we could see everything. my husband simply wanted our family to be able to have a birthday moment, and your ineptness prevented that. These are the facts. And if you really understood costumer service or cared, you would just apologize and learn from this Instead of getting mad. I have been in the hospitality business for 35 years. I go out of my way to accommodate my customers. I'd have made sure there was a birthday dessert brought out, with a lit candle, and made the moment special. epic fail. read more

If I could give it a 0 I would. We come up for the summer and have been going here for a few years and always got the All you can eat fish and shrimp fry. Well we went yesterday and did not realize it wasn't all you can eat anymore. We were charged extra for ordering more fish and shrimp. No mention that is wasn't all you can eat anymore. Oh but it was on some White board. No menu saying it. So If you didn't look at the white board there was no way of knowing. That used to be my favorite place to eat when I come up. Now knowing how deceptive they are, I will not return. read more

Used to really enjoy going there for great food, but it's gone downhill a lot. Went there once for a wrap special they advertised, an hour later I still didn't have my food, only got apps and the kid's meal. The owner was chatting with tables and didn't seem too busy since she was laughing with people, but when I went to just pay for my bill and leave without the food I had waited for, the owner tried saying they were busy and that's what was taking so long. Come to find out, the cook messed up a simple wrap and had to remake it so then they said that was why it was taking an hour for my meal. I asked 3 times for my bill so I could just leave and instead, I got attitude from the owners daughter who was my server, attitude and excuses from the owner, and left without my meal. ​I was then blocked by the business page on social media for leaving a comment about how long the wait was on their post about the wrap special, which tells me they just ignore and delete negative reviews whenever they can so they look better, which is unfortunate and very misleading. Maybe some day it'll be under different ownership and back to how it used to be when it was a great place to enjoy a meal. read more

Nice place to eat. New to Gilbert and checked out Wandering Pines really not expecting much. Tried the all you can eat fish and shrimp dinner. I wasn't expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. The all you can eat shrimp/fried fish was amazing! The homemade tartar sauce and cocktail sauce were delicious- excellent service!

Sunday night all you can eat fish (pollack) and butterfly shrimp, both with a nice breading and with the home made tarter sauce, it was a hit. They have this special Friday, Saturday and, if they have fish left, on Sunday. The chicken dumpling soup brought back good childhood memories. read more

Been here a few times. Service is hit or miss. The all you can eat fish fry is a good deal. Two out of the last three times I've been here, they did not have the A/C on and is was hot inside. Not a very good experience sitting there sweating. read more

I went for all you can eat shrimp. They told me it only lasted as long as the shrimp did. The shrimp wasn't very good either, it didn't even taste like shrimp. I didn't get another basket purely because the waitress never checked back on us until we had to ask for our check. There were only 3 tables of people there at the time, so relatively slow. Service was bad, had the kabobs..... also bad. Flavor was good, meat was very tough. Was a busy night, but was not checked on for 1/2 hour.

This place has gone down hill in last few years. I ordered the fried chicken and got 4 pieces that tasted like fish plus was very dry. I wish they would change the menu and add some more healthy choices. After I complained to our waitress about the chicken I was not charged for the meal plus a got a free dessert. Got all you can eat fish and shrimp. It was pretty good, but service was some of the worst I've seen. Server started out when asked for a beer list saying "we have pretty much everything", we knew we were in for a real treat with her. After we ordered she didn't come back, we had to flag her down every time for more portions and never once asked if we wanted more to drink. Including water and pop she didn't refill. Told us we had to get 2 fillets and 3 shrimp each time which makes no sense for an all you can eat deal. It's probably the best option in town for dinner and a beer but don't expect to be blown away. read more

My husband traveled from outside Grand Rapids yesterday to meet with another couple to transact a business deal. We arrived first. We told the waitress we were expecting another couple and off she went. After about 5 minutes, my husband flagged her down to order our beverages (we were never brought any water while we waited). The other couple showed up after about 5 more minutes and there we waited and waited and waited. There were about 10 other tables with customers - a couple with 6 people and ONE waitress. The wife of the other couple we were meeting was actually a waitress and felt sorry for this waitress and kept saying she wanted to get up and help. After they waited for about 10 minutes to get their beverage orders in the wife walked up to the bar and no one was there. The only service person we could see was the one and only waitress. We waited probably another 10 minutes (a total of about 30 minutes from the time the waitress had taken my husband's and my beverage order) and then the other couple (who were on time constraints) and my husband and I decided to leave. After my husband and I left, I noticed that I had left my phone on the table. I went back to get it and it was gone. I asked the waitress if someone had turned it in and she went and got the woman owner. The owner proceeded to tell me that we had left without paying so if I wanted my phone back I needed to pay the bill and that she had called the police! I went out to get my husband and we went back inside. The owner said that the waitress was getting his beer when we walked out! Long story short, my husband got his beer and drank it and paid. I got my phone back. We tried to explain how long we had been waiting but the owner said the waitress never asked for help from her and the owner was keeping an eye on the customers in order to help. Well, both my husband and I thought she wasn't keeping a very good eye on us if she couldn't see how long we had been waiting for beverages, the fact that the new couple had joined us - and, we never had any water on the table during those 30 minutes! read more

Ended up eating here on August 10th 2013 for my birthday with my boyfriend and we were not disappointed! The place looked clean and uncluttered with a warm atmosphere. The waitress was prompt, attentive and friendly and made a great whisky-sprite! We ordered the cheese curds and fried cauliflower and both were delicious. Not too much breading on either and the cauliflower melted in your mouth. We both had the wild rice with ham soup and that was wonderful and just the right amount before an entree. My boyfriend ordered the prime rib, which he said was very tasty but would have liked it a little more "alive" as he puts it. I had the steak kebabs which were delicious in themselves but they came with a dipping sauce that was great too. We both thought the veggie combo of 2 types of beans and small carrots was very tasty. I also ordered the sweet potato fries with my meal and those were really good but next time I will ask for no sugar or just a little sugar with them, was not expecting the sugar with the flavor of my meal. For dessert I took home a piece of their chocolate tiger cake- layered chocolate cake with yellow cake in middle along with white cream of some sort and fudge layer. I added some vanilla ice cream and it was very good too. I am going to return here, next time trying their bottomless chicken dumpling soup. If it's as good as their wild rice one, it will be a treat! read more
