This place is on the grounds of Giants Ridge so a nice short walk if you are staying there. It was steamy hot so we ate inside but they have a patio with beautiful views of the ski hill. I chose the Greek salad, one of my favs, and it was a very generous portion full of cucumbers, tomatoes, Kalamata olives and feta cheese, oh and a bit of lettuce - my kind of salad. Very good. Wish I would have remembered to ask for dressing on the side as it was quite covered but still good. The waitstaff was 2 people for the whole restaurant so they were super busy, especially with a couple large tables but they were friendly, warned it could be a bit of a wait and in the end, it was faster than many other restaurants we had been to. No worries there. They did a great job. read more

Ate at the restaurant after a day of skiing. The overall group vibe was that the Burnt Onion was just okay. The fettuccine Alfredo was bland, the soup could have bought at Panera, and the fries and Cesar salad is nothing to write home about. The service was excellent! We had a large group and they were very attentive! If you are staying at Giants it's an easy place to eat at, so I wouldn't totally rule this place out. read more

Disappointed by the 'smothered' burritos - all three of us ordered them but there was barely any sauce. While warm, they were a bit bland. A flavorful sauce and or a tasty meat filling would have made a huge big difference. read more

Good presentation : Bad substance My husband and I stopped in for dinner. We were initially impressed with how the food was plated, however when we ate it was a different story. My grilled peach salad had canned peaches and strawberries that were old and refrigerated too long. My husband had meatloaf and it was very bland resembling hospital food. This place is excellent. You can tell they try really hard to make your experience what it should be. We had the walleye cakes for an app and burger and blt with insane fries and magical onion dip. Was there this past weekend for a wedding; Friday night five of us went for a bite and a beer, it took 25 minutes to get a menu and water; we saw other family members and moved to a larger area so 11 of us could sit together. What a mistake. It took 25 minutes to get beverages. We all ordered food the pizza (regular and gluten free) and the mac and cheese were good; don't order a salmon blt, walleye dinner or the chicken sandwich - all over cooked and lacked flavor. I spoke with the chef and told him I didn't want to pay for something I didn't eat and he removed the salmon from our bill. The "service" is another story, received our drinks and never saw our waitress again. During the wedding the next night we ventured into the Burn Onion to grab a beer or two and there wasn't a bartender behind the bar - I don't get it, 12 people sitting at the bar and no bartender. I went here with my boy for the first time and my experience was nothing short of spectacular. Olivia encountered us as immediately with a joyous and can-do attitude. Her knowledge of the menu impressed me and my boy. Once we received the food, I was immediately overcome with an intense flavor. The French onion soup is their specialty, after all, it is The Burnt Onion. The pretzel with beer cheese had the most amazing presentation. I have been all over the world and have never seen anything like it. Chef Peter came out and informed me of the unique ingredients they use in their dishes. We decided to go to the Thanksgiving buffet as we had already celebrated with our family the weekend before. Beautiful views in the large chalet area. The food was a disappointment, however. Was expecting real turkey but got a loaf of some kind. No syrup for pancakes or French toast. Caramel and cinnamon rolls were a bit burnt. Good bacon. Most of the selections were cold. Desserts were not memorable. Gravy should have been by the potatoes and dressing. Servers were attentive and friendly. I will eat my own leftovers next year. Let me explain the one star review.... We went to the Burnt Onion for a wedding reception this past weekend. The ceremony at the Quarry was beautiful, the Lodge was gorgeous and one of the best hotels we've stayed at and even, for the most part, the Burnt Onion looked very nice and had good food. I would never recommend using them for a wedding reception, though. The bartenders at the porta-bar were horrendous and put a very sour spin on an otherwise beautiful day. The wedding reception went about as smoothly as can be the majority of the patrons were sitting around the tables and talking while having a few drinks because so many of us came from out of town and haven't seen each other in a long time. There was music and dancing and this was a very tame reception/dance. Imagine our surprise when, at about 10:30pm about four squad cars show up, and Biwabik cops come into the reception hall. They head right to the Porta-bar and pull the bartenders away. In the confusion, some of the wait staff stepped in to cover the bar. The bride went and followed the cops and the bartenders outside to see what was going on, and it turned out that these bartenders can not handle being bartenders. The two bartenders called the cops for drunk and disorderly patrons at the wedding!!! This was a shock to me, as I was a sober cab and not drinking but had a table next to the bar all night. I never saw a single disorderly person at this reception... Until the bartenders brought the cops in. And then the disorder was just super mad and upset wedding goers. Turns out, the bartenders had called the cops because they couldn't handle being called bad names by people they cut off. Two of the three or so people they cut off were visibly drunk, yes, but they weren't wild and crazy, they weren't starting fights or dancing on the table or anything that warranted cops being called. And honestly, they had left the reception after this to go to their room to have a little after party. I understand it is the bartenders' right to cut people off when they feel they've had too much, but this was asinine and uncalled for. Once the cops left (the first time) people were visibly upset. Telling the bartenders to find new careers, telling them how much they sucked and how dare they do this to the bride and groom after they dumped probably $20-30k at Giants Ridge and the Burnt Onion for their wedding. At one point in time, and this was the final straw for the bartenders, the father of the bride was so upset and went up to them and hollered that he wanted his tips back because they didn't deserve them. When saying this, he did grab the jar (but didn't take it or the money). At this, the bartenders went back to the kitchen where the cops were hanging out, and all of them came out again to shut the party down by 11pm. The one cop was screaming at the bride and groom at this part while the rest of the officers stood back and quite frankly, looking rather embarrassed. I feel like the other officers were expecting a raging fight when they came here, not a bunch of middle aged people sitting around talking and laughing. At this point in time, it had escalated to the point that the bartenders were bringing out the cages, the bar was shut down, lights were turned on, and the reception was over. Many upset patrons refused to sign tab slips, called the bartenders worse names than what those that they cut off did and started screaming "get a new career" at them. The hotel front desk lady was nice enough to take complaints for anyone that wanted to voice them, and there were many. All in all, Giants Ridge and the Quarry was a beautiful place to hold a wedding... But there is NO WAY on God's green earth I could ever recommend a reception at the Burnt Onion because they have horrible customer service. Please, unless you plan on having a no alcohol allowed reception, do yourself a favor and find another venue before the staff at the Burnt Onion put a nasty dark scar on what is to be your perfect day. read more

I went to the restaurant with a party of 6. Only one person in our group was Caucasian and the rest were Asian. Our waitress said that they had to split our group because they had a limit of 4 people per table. So we were split into two different tables of three. After we ordered appetizers another party of 7 were seated together minutes later. We refused the food that was sent out to our table and wanted to paid for just our appetizers. They called out a manager to explain that we are going through "crazy" times and that there was a miscommunication. The manager iterated that we were not from "one household" and that is why they split us up... Our waiter never said they you had to be part of one household to be seated together. This was the worst customer service I have experienced at any restaurant that I have visited. They will never earn my business again. read more

Our first night visiting Giants Ridge, we opted for a close restaurant. Service was very slow despite it being very slow. Ordered a chicken sandwich was rubbery and the bun was stale. My kids liked their chicken fingers. The saving grace of the meal was their fries. They are Outstanding! Go for drinks and fries and you won't be disappointed. read more

Awful, terrible, waste of money, sorry we went! Ten of us. Only four other tables filled in entire restaurant. Wrong drinks came: scotch instead of gin? Hour after ordering, soup/salad arrived but no appetizers. Knocked on kitchen door to find absent waitress for our appetizers and they came out five minutes apart with coagulated melted cheese, yuck. Two of our taco salads arrived with stale shell, bits of meat and total of 12 pieces of lettuce-- corn, tomatoes, or black beans missing. By the time we caught waitress to mention missing veggies, linguine instead of angel hair pasta (big difference), off-tasting burgers, missing sides for several dinners, she said she'd bring them. I said no thanks, remove scotch drink and salad from my bill but I'll tip you what I would have owed you. Bills came goofed up, THEN little bowls of the missing salad veggies and someone's dinner rolls for long-gone dinner. What?? Save your time and money and go somewhere else! Awful! read more

Jim Hunt is the best. He tended to my every need. Every time I needed another drink he was right there with it. Every time I needed food he was right there to take our order. He even personally delivered my tab after I had left the bar. What a customer service advocate! This place and Jim are the best! read more

My husband and I both ordered the Philly Steak Sandwich. We were both pleased. The serving was large (next time we'll split it) and hot and delicious. We loved the unique 'fries' as well. The appetizers were fabulous but the main course not so good the French onion soup did not have the deep beef flavor that it should have it loooked like n tasted like chicken broth was used as a base. The Caesar salads dressing had no flavor. The beef ribs were not cooked long enough they were tuff and they tasted old. The shrimp scampi came with the shells still on shrimp so shrimp did not get the scampi flavor. On a bright note the rib eye was fabulous as was the crab ravioli. read more
