I came here for the first time last weekend with a friend. Since it was going to be the last nice day before dropping 30 degrees and snowing...... again, we sat on the patio. I arrived around 5:30pm and had to park a couple of blocks away. The parking lot is small and there weren't any open spots to park on the block. I wasn't starving so I ordered the llapingachos appetizer with a side of hot sauce. They were tasty but the hot sauce really upped the dish. Our server was very nice and attentive. It's been almost 4 years since we've been back here and it's been almost 4 years that I've been told by my husband we just need to go! Today was that day...no kids...might as well!!! Fresh made Limeade was having my husband gleefully happy! Empanadas are one of my fav things ever and these are little pockets of beef stew! I would have been happy that just being my meal but like 10 of them! Plus that chino salsa...ummm yes!!! Hubs had Sultado was a little vinegary but still something he would get again! You have to really love that flavor profile! I got Encocado...pour the curry sauce in my mouth please! I got mine with Shrimp and a side of chicken cause let's be real I'm a Big Dipper and if I get a chance to have good sauce I wanna dip everything in it! So glad to see not much has changed for the menu - and my request for them to add one of their cheese desserts (dusted in powdered sugar) was added to the list. Years ago this was not on the list and I would ask for it every time I came in! Also super excited to see that they have expanded their seating! I had been here a few times before and every single time I went, it was truly amazing. I could not wait to go back! I went back for brunch (which is something I had not had before) and was really excited for full flavors and great food and it fell very flat. We got some sort of hash and it felt as if there was not even salt and pepper on the potatoes. Also, we got the empanadas and they were hardly filled with anything and the few things that were in there was not good. Over cooked meat and so many peas and veggies it just was not good at all. We were so frustrated by the experience that we ended up going back inside to talk to a manager and then spoke to the owner and he said there was no new chef and that that just was the way that it was. I live near here and get take-out a lot. I love everything I've tried here, but it seems the last 10 meals I've gotten from here (whether take-out or dine-in), have been the Chaulafan. I would avoid the chaulafan if you've never had it, because if you do, you won't want to eat anything else there. Personally Latin food isn't usually my first choice of food so to be fair, I'm already bias. I've had Ecuadorean food before and remembered not being a huge fan but I thought I would try this place out living in NE MPLS. My partner and I came here on a weekday for lunch on a summer afternoon. We thought about sitting outside but it was pretty hot so we got a table inside. The decor and inside is colorful and pretty- it's very homey and sits a good amount. The service was pretty slow even though it wasn't busy. Our server was kin of friendly but was definitely not focus- she was worried about another coworker it seemed which to me was a bit unprofessional but just bothered me a little. Now for the food: We ordered the chicken sandwich with salad as our side and the shrimp saltado. The chicken sandwich was delicious and super cheesy which I loved. We were super excited to try the saltado because we heard good reviews and saw that it's spicy ! I loveeee spicy food! But it pains me to say we were so disappointed! I appreciate that they were not cheap on the shrimp, however it was not spicy- more so salty and sour. Also I thought the fries would be on the side (bad assumption on my part) but they were more like potato wedges and since it was mixed in, it was a bit soggy for my liking. As a huge fan of saltados, I was excited to try Chimborazo. On a Saturday evening, we waited about 15 minutes for a table of 8 --not bad. I have to say that everything on the menu looked amazing, but I had to go for the popular Beef Saltado ($13) dish. It basically consists of stir-fried marinated beef with peppers, onions, tomatoes served with rice and avocado. The dish is bursting of flavors from the tender meat and veggies, which mixes amazingly over the rice. I also had to add a side of Sweet Plantains ($3). I love the crystalized sweetness that's a must to any meal even though it only came with a few pieces. Everyone else in our party loved their meal as well. It's no surprise why my Minneapolis local friend has been here so many times that she's tried most of the items on the menu by now. You're bound to not be disappointed by this spot! Despite only being a visitor to the Twin Cities, I've been to Chimborazo twice and both were terrific experiences. I will write about the latter experience as the first was about three years ago. I got dinner with a couple friends last night. There was a short wait to either sit in the beautiful patio or cute inside (we chose inside as it was windy). Service was fast and friendly. We split the yuca fries which had a fantastic texture and a tasty sauce and covering of tomatoes and spices. I got the seco de carne which was kind of like a beef stew. It was so flavorful and HUGE! The plantains were a delight, I could have used even more despite the already generous portion. This is a mainstay for my Minneapolis visits. Five stars. read more

I really enjoyed my meal, my taste buds were introduced to some new crave worthy dishes. I wish I lived closer so I can overindulge on a regular basis! My husband and I initially drove right past the place, and had to seek out the small sign and house number. It's in a residential spot, and looks like a house converted to a restaurant. I loved the homey feel inside, the tables were a bit too close together, but I get it, they want to serve as many people as possible in the space. We had a bit of a wait on a Saturday night, but once seated service was prompt. We ordered the yuca fritas, I can not resist thick cut, deep fried, golden deliciousness. For entrees, hornado con papas and encocado. The yuca fries did not disappoint, they appeared battered. Crispy on the outside and soft inside, perfect start to the meal. Little logs of heaven. The hornado con papas was roasted pork with cheese filled potato cakes called llapingachos. Holy shit. I really love these things called llapingachos. This was my husbands dish but I was not to be restrained from reaching over and helping myself to this plate of happiness. My encocado, mahi mahi in coconut sauce, was super tasty too, but my fish was slightly over cooked. Didn't stop me from eating most of though. I need to try so much more on their menu. If you're vegan, go elsewhere. Usually, if I have a problem, they fix it immediately, but not last night. I was shorted two items on my plate because two staff members couldn't get it right. I love Chimborazo. I've been going there for years and years. When I was vegetarian, everything was easy. Now that I'm vegan, it is a complete disappointment. Chimborazo advertises on social media that they can make items vegan, but they don't deliver. Many, many times we have ordered vegan and many, many times it arrives with eggs and/or cheese. Last night, it was ecuatoriano vegetariano. I got my plate and it had one llapingacho and one muchin (cheese stick.) I knew immediately that the cheese stick was not okay because they give you two llapingachos without cheese when they make it vegan. The first staff member told me it's just how the chef chooses to make it. The second staff member took away the cheese stick but left me the llapingacho that had cheese inside. Unless they train every staff member his to accommodate vegans, I won't be back. read more

Wanted to try a local business that I have never been to for #YelpsBigNightIn. I was worried at first when when I called she had to take my number and call me back 15 minutes later. Luckily it didn't take long. Paid for it over the phone and food was ready in 20 minutes. The 20 minute drive home was a struggle with the aroma of the food filling my car. We started off with plantains- they were dry and not sweet as I was expecting 3/5. I had the steak churrasco. Portion size was huge. Great flavor- steak was a little more dry than I would of hoped and the chimchurri sauce was like half a half a shot. (They charge you 50 cents for extra FYI). 4/5. The saltado also has great flavor but chicken was bland and dry and everything else had good flavor. 3.5/5 would probably come back again because the Latin food in MN is lacking. This place is a MUST try. I only have 4 stars because I ordered flank steak on the side (w/ highland spices) and it was a bit salty. And the tuna in the Encebollado was a big tough but the stew was amazing. Overall, it was DELICIOUS. Many other things on the menu I want to try so I'll be back again for sure. This review is based solely on their food. My family ordered take out for a birthday celebration the other day. The food is amazing. My personal favorite is the Beef Saltado (going to have to find a recipe this weekend and try to replicate it). It's the perfect blend of savory and tangy. The rice soaks up all of the great sauce and the steak, peppers, and onions are just a classic combination. The yucca fries were great too and I know the Encocado is a favorite among the family. I hate myself. Want to know why? Because I never knew this place existed until I moved out of NE Mpls. Just two visits here put it on the list of my favorite restaurants in MSP. The encocado (coconut curry) with shrimp takes me straight back to Isla Santa Cruz. This is my brand of comfort food. But anything with that roast pork (thankfully featured on both brunch and dinner menus) is going to be amazing. The llapingachos are delicious, but I wouldn't decide my meal around them. I could eat a hundred of their empanadas. Service can be slow. I prepare for that going in, so I won't knock a star for it. I had the chaulafan, which is ecuadorian fried rice with pork, chicken, shrimp, egg, carrot, peas, and green onion. It also comes with this yummy green sauce. So delish-- I wanted more! I also got on the side a few Llapingachos, which are cheese-filled potato pancakes. Whatever you do...make sure you get these! So amazing! I'm salivating just thinking about them! We have loved everything we have tried at Chimborazo. Having only eaten their food during the pandemic, it's always been take-away. But the food is obviously prepared by someone who knows what they're doing. I was literally drooling the 2nd time we went just thinking about the food I was soon to consume. Amazing! I had the Beef Saltado and asked for extra spicy. It was delicious! The meal was also extremely filling and a hefty portion.

First time experiencing Ecuadorian food, and wow so yummy! I was surprised by the different food options and pleasantly satisfied by the flavors. We had a group of 10 and the staff happily pushed tables together to make room for our big group on short notice on the weekend. Our server was funny with a dry sense of humor and clear knowledge of the food and drink options. The decor and ambience added to the authentic Ecuadorian feel: string lights, art and handicrafts hanging on the walls, and handwritten daily and weekly specials on the board. Wine was very reasonably priced, and a few friends got a delicious mimosa with some type of fruit juice (mango I think?) instead of orange juice--delicious! We all ordered something different, and of course I made everyone let me try their food so I could taste the range of options Chimborazo offers. Nothing disappointed, and a few even surprised me! Platos fuertes only, we didn't order any soups, salads, or apps. The seco de pollo was a really nice stir fry type of dish with great sauce. Saltado had a very unique sweet and spicy, tangy sauce that brought some heat. Churrasco flank steak wasn't my favorite, but I loved the sweet plantain and fresh "fries"! Llapingachos potato pancakes were very unique--something I hadn't had before--and served with yummy chorizo and a unique spicy peanut sauce. Someone got the lamb special and the meat was SO tender and delicious! I typically don't get fried rice at restaurants cause I make it so much at home, but their Chaulafan (Ecuadorian fried rice) was spectacular--maybe the best thing I tasted! Sad to say I was disappointed with Chimborazo last night. I'd rather contact them directly but there's no email or contact form on their website. The yucca frita was undercooked! $9.50 for such quality is unacceptable. Their prices have gone up and portion sizes are down, but I was willing to endure this as long as the quality remained consistent. The portion of beans has gotten quite tiny so I also asked for no rice and more beans on my Ecuatoriano Vegetariano and received neither. I'm super bummed. Please do better Chimborazo! read more
