It's been a while, like a number of years... Time get's away, what can I say? I brought Doll here yesterday, for the first time. She had the CRIOLLA OMELETTE, but with scrambled eggs. I got the dish you don't see on the menu. Grilled steak pieces, a sweet potato hash, and a small, fresh Arepa, with 2 eggs. We have been meaning to stop by Cafe Racer for a while. We really wanted to check out their breakfast menu but kept thinking about it in the lunch hours of the day. We finally got in right under the wire to try their food! The person who took our order was kind, helpful, and patient, and they brought our food out to our table (it's a small space, but an "order at the counter and take a number" spot). I wish this place acted like it wanted to be open. I have no idea how they're still functioning with how their business practices work. Constantly changing hours, nothings accurate online, somehow you're just supposed to know all their constant changing info. The food is delicious, reasonable price. Service really isn't service. It's just someone at the counter who seems very upset to be there and will literally not help you with any kind of alteration. Cooks have long hair and don't wear hair nets. They never wanna make substitutes or help you get food. They're more than happy to just tell you NO and have you not buy anything and walk out... I've done it so many times it's hard to actually count...I'd say upwards of $300 in lost business from me alone. I live less than five minutes from here and typically only eat here once every six months because I get reminded that they do not care about their clients, get frustrated and end up eating at one the many other paces around that DO want your business and deserve it so much more. I've been putting off writing them a bad review for about a couple years but honestly, I think it's time that they either start to care or just shut down. read more

This is such a cute cafe with amazing food! Counter service with self serve water. The staff was very friendly and speedy with my food. I highly recommend the pork. It was soo tender it just fell apart. The seasoning was subtle with just the right amount of saltiness. The rice and beans were bland but were a good carb to soak up the juiciness of the pork. The sweet plantains were perfect in every way. They had beautifully crunchy bottoms from being fried. The arepa con queso was good. There is a sweetness with the butter and maybe in the corn masa itself. Its very dense and rich, i would recommend splitting with a friend if possible. read more

I love this spot; their space is really cute, staff have always been really nice, & they have a cool patio in the summer. My husband & I came here for brunch & tried: --ABORRAJADO: the playing was really pretty with all the veg colors. My husband really enjoyed this but said it could use more salt potentially. --I had a veggie dish that was like an eggs Benedict on (I believe) arepas or masa, but can't remember the name of it. It was delicious either way; I wish there were more sauce for the Benedict because that was the tastiest part. The veggies were really good, too, but again I think they could've used more seasoning. The portion sizes of both meals were perfect. We each finished our meals but didn't feel overly stuffed. I also got an iced latte & really enjoyed it, the espresso they serve is tasty. Delicious!! Casual order-at-the-counter spot with great food. We stopped in on a Thursday evening and were able to find street parking right out front. There were a few other guests but we had no problem finding an open table in the small dining area. The menu is small, but they also have a few specials. Stopped in for lunch with my parents in the winter. At the time, they were allowing dine in so long as you had proof of vaccination (a picture on your phone was good enough). The lunch menu was a bit limited but we pretty much got a little of everything, and everything we had was good. The tostones were crunchy and savory, the plantains were sweet. We got both the pulled chicken and the pulled pork, both were juicy and rich, brightened by fresh cilantro, diced onion, and queso. The staff was friendly, and the entire vibe was a bit hipster. What a wonderful little hidden gem in southeast Minneapolis. It is a small cafe with just a few tables, however I came with a large group and they were happy to push most of the tables together for us. It was a Saturday afternoon and they were having Happy Hour so all drinks were half off! I got an amazing sangria for just $4. Yes please! They also had other mixed drinks, beer, and wine options. The food menu seemed small, and I believe it was a special happy hour menu, but everyone found something that they liked. I chose the Roasted Chicken with Arepas and Rice n beans. The chicken was good, but the real winner were the Arepas. They were soooooo good that I wish I had just gotten a whole plate of those. The rice and beans were bland and I wish I had gotten the sweet plantains or yucca. I picked a few off some of my friends plates and they were delicious. Service was amazing and the waitress was attentive to everyone's dietary restrictions and special requests. There was plenty of street parking on a Saturday afternoon and no wait, even for a large group. I look forward to returning to try more of their other food and I'm interested to see what they offer not during happy hour. I first came here for the free lunch they do once a month. This is such a kindness on their part and I applaud them for it. Almost everything on the menu is gluten free, the only exception is a hotdog bun. Everything I have tried from here has been delicious. They make a version of fries with gravy that is delightful, yucca fries with a gluten free gravy topped with pulled pork. The arepas that come with many dishes can be either sweet or savory I love them with their homemade hot sauce (verde) my favorite item by far is their jambalaya it's incredibly flavorful. They often have unusual and delicious drinks too. The staff is always friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. If you find out that something contains an allergen they will happily fix the problem for you. From the very first I have felt at home here. It's relatively small, does have outdoor seating when the weather permits. I strongly recommend you give this place a try. read more

I usually get (for dinner) either the pork or the roasted veggies with plantains and arepas (don't miss the arepas!), but my favorite meal here is actually breakfast. I recommend the aborrojado with an extra egg (and a caffe con leche, of course). They have a gorgeous garden to sit in when it's warm. Now that it's chilly, it's the only restaurant I'm currently eating indoors in. (They have a vaccine mandate.) And I LOVE that they regularly provide free meals for any neighbors who need them. Cafe Racer is one of our go-to neighborhood hot spots. The food is consistently delicious and the menu is short but has something for everyone, including great vegetarian and gluten free options. Unlike other restaurants, we find their yucca fries to hold up great even during takeout. Cafe Racer also has a wonderful breakfast - I love their keilbasa sausage. In addition, the patio is big with lots of outdoor seating, a major plus during Covid. And, on top of all of this, the restaurant is a wonderful asset to the Minneapolis community and offers free meals to all one lunch a month. Girls day out lunch here was fantastic. We had great service - when asked for recommendations our server was ready with a few specifics & explained the ingredients some in our party of 3 were not familiar with :). The food was delicious and aesthetically pleasing, too. I appreciated that their coffee cups were small because it allows you to drink the whole cup while it is still hot and our server was also attentive to refills throughout the meal. Obviously being January, we sat indoors, but on our way out noticed the patio area which looks like it would be wonderful in the warmer seasons. The interior space is bright, clean and inviting. Honestly I am shocked I hadn't been there before yesterday - I live right near it & had driven by a few times. I will definitely be back soon. As it authentic Latin American food takes a long time to make. Especially some of the meat dishes. The pulled chicken has great flavor. That was my favorite item. I was excited for my very first food truck experience! Parked outside Fulton Brewery were 3 trucks to choose from and I was lucky enough that this one was there with vegetarian options! I had the Arepa sandwich which came with your choice of pulled chicken, pork or balsamic roasted vegetables and one side. I had the veggies with the carrot souffle side. I was SO SO SO disappointed. This was my first time eating at a food truck EVER and it was so greasy and gross that I had to throw almost the whole thing away. In hindsight, I should have gone back to the truck and talked to them about it and shown them all the grease and asked what they thought of it, but I didn't. I was SO excited too! The menu looked great, and like everything I love. I got the pulled pork with 2 sides, the roasted veggies and the carrot souffle. The carrot thing was actually awesome. The pork was very bland and fatty and greasy, but the veggies were the worst offender. There was a straight up PUDDLE of grease in the bottom of the dish. Once I saw how much was there, it made me sick to my stomach to imagine how much was ON the rest of the food. Tossed the rest into the trash. I HATE wasting money and I HATE wasting food, so this is something I never ever do. Very disappointed. I emailed them about it, but have yet to hear back. read more
