Fantastic. I came in because I read the menu outside and the risotto cakes sounded amazing. However, they have chicken stock in them (glad I asked!) so they aren't vegetarian friendly. After asking the waitress for suggestions she emphasized the stuffed poblano pepper is her favorite, so I went for it. I had the warm vegetable salad to start and I'm not sure why but it was the best warm vegetable salad I've ever had!! Delicious. When the entree came I was pretty blown away. Definitely go! After the meal I talked with the manager on duty an she argued with me why we couldn't have booth when now half her restaurant was empty! My hubs and I stopped in here on Christmas Eve, as it was the one of few restaurants open in town. Upon walking in, we were told that the bar had space for us and we'd get full service there, so of course we obliged and went ahead rather than waiting for a table. So here's the skinny. The food is actually pretty good here. We ordered a charcuterie board, and it came with fig jam, grainy mustard, pickled salad, almonds, great salami and prosciutto, and a couple of great cheeses. I LOVE this kind of stuff, and this did not disappoint. It really was the highlight of my night. We also got a pizza, with prosciutto, burrata, sundried tomatoes, and arugula. When it came, I was a bit skeptical and not sure I'd like the pizza, but looks aren't everything. I have a riff with perfectly formed pizza dough, and I figured if we were going to a "stone fired" pizza place, we'd get that glorious imperfect pizza dough, with the oblong shape, charred and crusty. But their's is like an oval, and too, well, perfect. Anyway, the flavors of the pizza were all quite good, and the crust was surprisingly better than I thought (honestly, i was imagining Digiorno or something when I saw it)- it was thin, chewy interior, crispy exterior. Really and truly, based on our visit, the service needs work. The bartender was very nice but extremely busy. Our charcuterie board got sent to another couple that came in 30 min AFTER we had ordered. They started touching the food on it, and when the staff realized it was ours, they were seemingly going to give it to us. I don't think it's appropriate to give customers food that's been touched by other customers...but wait, there's more. About 3 other parties were all seated and received their food before we got ours. We sat, waited and waited, and wondered if they had lost our order or never received it. We were there for about an hour before ours came out. In the meantime, all 3 of the other parties were happily eating their meals, including the other couple who accidentally received our charcuterie board. The bartender just shrugged it off and said the kitchen just got really slammed. I don't think that's a good excuse, but I don't think it was his fault either. So all in all, bad service experience. The bartender did tell us that the charcuterie board wasn't going to be on our bill due to the screw up. So kudos for that. There was just so much more that went wrong beyond that, and for that reason I don't think I'd return. read more

Chimayo has a nice variety ob their menu and is great to take a group of people. They have some unique drink items and nice seasonal specials. It's a nice ambiance And in the summer when it's nice there are big doors that open so it's almost like eating alfresco. read more

I'm back on another southwestern Colorado adventure, seeking out the best restaurants and on a mission for the best food. I have to say, Chimayo was a big disappointment. We started out with olives and focaccia, which was tasty, but it could have used a few more pieces of bread. For our round of entrees, I had the salmon. It was over cooked and dry. The orzo was bland and under seasoned. The beans, yet well cooked and tasty, we're slathered in butter. The only thing I really liked about my dinner was the citrus sauce and the seasoning on the salmon. It's just a shame it was so over cooked and it was a pretty small piece of fish for the price of the meal. The rest of my party had the bacon wrapped meatloaf, the mac n' cheese and the pork loin in rhubarb sauce. All of the dishes were lacking in one thing or another. The meatloaf was dry and over cooked. The Mac n' cheese was completely mealy, bland and probably the worst dish on the table. The pork, although well cooked and moist, didn't have much sauce and the sauce that was on the plate didn't taste like rhubarb. The drinks were good. They weren't spectacular, but they were good. The service was extremely slow. Our waitress was nice, but she didn't seem to be on top of her game. It took an extremely long time for drinks to get out to us. I'm not sure if it was the watress being slow or the bar being backed up, but it was painfully slow at times. We had the strawberry rhubarb crumble and the banana tart for desert and they were brought out with no silverware. She said she would be right back with some and as my ice cream is melting all over my plate, she stopped to take pictures and gossip with another table. I have to be honest, that was just flat out rude and pissed me off. We sat there at least a few more minutes, in which my ice cream completely melted before she came back with silverware. On the bright side, the deserts were very good! Unfortunately, the disappointment did not end when we walked away. The waitress boxed up the rest of the olives for my sister. When we got in the car, we noticed the hard way that the waitress filled a styrofoam, unsealed to-go box with olive oil. It spilled all over the car and ruined my sister's dress with a slight tilt of the box as we were getting in the car. Who puts that much liquid in a container that doesn't seal tightly? We all scrambled to clean up the car and drove home with nothing but complaints about the whole dinner. I'm sorry to write such a terrible review of what has the potential to be a great place, but I honestly feel like I wasted calories on eating that food and my family wasted good money on a terrible dinner. Not really sure how to rate this restaurant. We moved to Durango recently and we got a gift certificate from our realtor to Chimayo. We arrived around 5:50 pm, very few people in the place so the hostess asked us where we might like to sit. Because the sun was very bright at the front tables, we just said anywhere, just not in the glare. She politely seated us and gave us our menus, along with the special happy hour menu, and stated that we just made it in time for happy hour if we wanted a drink or one of the happy hour appetizers. Our waiter came by about 5-10 minutes later and when we tried to order, he rudely said that we were seated outside of the happy hour section, which is only the bar and the front tables, and besides that, we were two minutes late. I explained that the restaurant is almost empty, we were seated where we were by the hostess who told us it was happy hour and gave us the menu, and if we seemed to be two minutes late, it's because he was late getting to our table. He continued to argue that it was the rule, but said he would do us a special favor of honoring the happy hour menu if we wished to order anything from it. We ordered one beer and one appetizer, which was discounted a grand total of $4 off the regular prices. We also ordered our entrees of chicken and mushroom enchiladas and a hangar steak. The food was really good, and when the waiter stopped by, I told him so, and that although we got off to a rough start, maybe we could start over on our meeting. Got the check, paid it along with my usual 20-25% gratuity. As we were leaving the hostess apologized for her mistake in seating us outside the happy hour section. We told her it was no big deal, and that's when our rude, pushy waiter had to interject himself into the conversation telling us that a happy hour from 3-6 is very generous and how he did us a big favor by making not one but two exceptions for us, at which Pointedly told him to just shut up. So to the owner and manager, the food is good, you are killing it though with rude waitstaff, and a stupid rule regarding happy hour at only a few tables. Again, we are talking a total discount of $4 for us. Is that really worth it? read more

Great place with awesome food, atmosphere and drinks. You may be curious why I am giving it 1 star then. The answer is simple, extremely rude hostesses. As a local we frequent Chimayo often, but not without often run in with a rude employee. The most recent time we wanted to go to Chimayo to have a couple of drinks prior to our diner reservations else where(5pm on a Friday). Upon arriving we stood in the entrance for about 2 minutes with not host. We noticed about 5-8 people sitting and enjoying drinks and pizza so we went ahead and sat down at the high top tables next to the bar (I am not 21 but the rest of my party is so we didn't sit at the bar). soon after sitting down a host approached us and said "Hello have you been seated?". We replied with "no we have been waiting and all we want is to have some drinks". The host preceded to tell us that the high top tables are for dining and walked away disgusted without giving us a solution. I understand we may have been at fault seating our selves but the attitude we received was not needed. After we ordered our first round of drinks the host walked up to our waiter and said "really only four drinks and no food" (I overheard this as I was going to the restroom). Now on edge I watched this host parade around the restaurant gossiping about us coming in to only get drinks as if she was annoyed by our business. My husband and I visit Durango every couple of years and have enjoyed several good restaurants there, but dinner last night at Chimayo out shined them all. We could tell the restaurant is popular from,the sidewalk as we looked in and saw a pleasant buzz of business. We were greeted as we entered and chose to go to the bar to enjoy a drink. I had a perfectly made Blueberry Lemon Drop martini. Antioxidents and vodka, does it get any better? We moved to a table by the roll up windows and it was lovely to sit and enjoy our dinner as we people watched both inside and outside the restaurant. The food was the best we have had in Durango. We started with the Queso Fundido appetizer and it was delicious. I thought about ordering another one for my entree, but chose the pesto shrimp linguini and my husband ordered a pizza. Both were cooked to perfection and exceeded our expectations. Our server was friendly and attentive. She made us feel welcome and appreciated, even though the restaurant was very busy, she took her time answering our questions about the many entrees that we were interested in. Chimayo is our new favorite restaurant in Durango, so good in fact that we returned a few days later for another fantastic evening of great food, drinks and service. read more

I don't know why people like this place so much. It's very overpriced for what you get and the food isn't all that great. No kids menu, but they will give you buttered noodles or the like. Neither of my kids ate more than two bites and my wife said it tasted "plastic". The famous Mac and Cheese has one too many cheeses and the flavor is just off somehow. The pizzas are the same ones you get can get for half the price elsewhere, nothing special or different. It's not bad, it just isn't really worth the fuss or the price. read more

So I used to give this place 5 stars because I loved the service and the Chicken and Date salad. Also the Blueberry Lemondrop. Now they have taken it off their menu and I have no interest in going back. I've tried other options there a handful of times and the only thing I've ever LOVED/liked was that salad. I'd come in and spend 40 something bucks on lunch just because you'd get yummy cocktails and of course that amazing salad. There's a gentleman there with curly gray hair and glasses and he gave us the worst service during lunch. And I heard from another server the managers like him because he's a good seller....ugh really? We had to ask him for dressing, wine, etc. multiple times, and he'd disappear. So basically if there aren't 20 heads then he doesn't want to put forward any effort. As we dropped more than a bill on that meal. Sorry to say I will no longer be going here. read more

Great place to people watch. Food was outstanding. ZNoodles were my wife's favorite and I had to sneak a few bites from her plate. Good beer and drink selections. My teenage daughter loved the Mac N Cheese. I had Fish tacos and my son had steak tacos. We both enjoyed our selections. Tuna was very juicy and tasted awesome. This is the 2nd time we have eaten at Chimayo. The first time was average so we decided to give it another chance. I ordered the soup and salad combo and for a $2.00 up charge I asked for the French Onion Soup being that I am a huge fan of this soup! The salad was hearty, tasty and done right. I will say if I return that I wouldn't pay the up charge for the french onion though. The reason I state this is because it actually reminded me of the french onion you get at panera which is basic and less than desirable. The soup lacked a lot but the salad made up for it. Unfortunately the wait staff that was servicing our table was less than satisfactory as well. She only visited the table 3 times. Once for the drinks and order, once to bring the food and once to bring the bill. We waited on drinks and really never got them. I doubt I would go back here if given the choice. read more
