I'm not too big on sweet drinks and this was light and balanced. I had a delicious bacon and cheese quiche here while drinking the seasonal sea moss Ube matcha. The matcha was a bit weird, I think the sea moss throws it off, but I still enjoyed everything! I of course wish the spot was bigger, but there was seating inside for a Saturday which is nice. Been here a couple of times. First time I had a very tasty sausage and veggie quiche. Nice and warm, single serving does fine for a quick and light breakfast. My wife enjoyed the chai teas, something I don't. Wish I could just get an iced green tea, but most places just do tea bags. People seem to like their coffee drinks as there were plenty being made. Made a little error in getting a bagel egg and cheese sandwich this last time. Forget how far away from NYC I was. Bagel was very flat and dull. Plenty of treats too, had and enjoyed an oat chocolate chip cookie. Nice and warm. Very good. Staff have been very friendly every time. read more

The vibes inside the cafe were immaculate. The throwback playlist took me right back to my childhood, as the cafe name implies. They have seating both inside and outside. Eight seats inside, and a full outdoor patio. I also lucked out with a parking spot nearby on the street. I also appreciate this cafe's location on a quiet, not so overwhelming street. Wide variety of drinks and food available. Had a hard time picking what to order! The quiche was good, though a little pricey at almost nine dollars. Tried the blueberry cobbler latte! This was a great cafe to get away from the torturous heat for a little while. Inside was were the blasting a/c was however most of the tables were out on their front patio. They probably could use a fan on that patio as bad as the heat is today. I ordered a medium sized cappuccino and a chocolate croissant so I could chill for a minute. The capucchino was better with the vanilla flavoring and it was prepared in a split second. The service was more than friendly and one of the guys gave me the WiFi password. It was a relaxed experience with not that many people, and my guess is that everyone was still working. This cafe definitely fits in well with the neighborhood. read more

Eh, nothing impressed me too much about this place. I came in trying to order a latte, but had to wait a bit because the staff were in a corner gossiping. Here's what I loved, + toasted marshmallow latte iced - delicious and they had skim milk for it , $5 for a small + bacon quiche, I was never a fan of quiche but I am now. It was filling and tasted fresh, $8.50 + outdoor seating, about 8 tables and chairs ( some for 2 people, some for 4) + fall specialty menu sounds really good. Surprised there wasn't a pumpkin option + they have hot sauce What I didn't love as much, + lots of people were doing work so seats were kind of hard to come by outside + the baristas could be friendlier in my opinion + the WiFi was going in and out when outside I would visit again if I were in the area. Got to visit this neighborhood place right off U street got a cold brew and breakfast burrito with spicy sausage both were good. They had good flavor and nice balance. The cold brew had a nice taste creamy and little bitterness. The breakfast burrito was nice and flavorful. It had fried potatoes in it that added some great flavor and texture. The sausage tasted good and had nice seasoning and heat level. The egg was tasty and light and had a nice pepper taste to them. The cheese in it a type of cheddar didn't blend as well with everything probably better to use a jack cheese since it has a similar profile to everything else. Service was great and nice. They served everything quickly and even though there was a big line they operated quickly. Inside and outside it is classic coffee house but has a big menu of drinks and pastries. read more

Don't get me wrong espresso was really great and overall vibe was great in the cafe. Workers seems super overwhelmed since it was super super busy. Loved the pastry I got! Maybe would have a better experience if it was less crowded and hectic. Not a lot of seating options, and my tip is to know what you wanted before you go... Finally got around to trying Childhood Cafe. It's pretty small and has a more cozy atmosphere. The coffee and food options are decent. I wouldn't necessarily come here to spend hours and work, but it's a good place for a quick mid-day coffee or pastry on the go. It seems they change their drink specials depending on the season. I tried the breakfast sandwich which came with a hash brown and fried egg in it and thought it was filling, but it was reheated which didn't taste as fresh. If you order, I recommend adding hot sauce or ketchup for some extra flavor. The baristas seemed a bit overwhelmed as the cafe seems a bit understaffed? I asked if they could make a fresh sandwich and it was not received very well but it might have been because they were busy - just good to keep in mind. read more

I've always wanted to visit this location because they had an awesome menu which changes often. When I first got nearby, I had to drive around twice because I could not spot the location however, I was able to illegally park and run in and grab a drink again I love all of the unique flavors and options that they offer and I was happy to see that they have baked goods as well. Stumbled across this cafe while on U street and decided to try out a matcha. My service was good and the ambiance is super relaxed in there. I love affirmations and had to sign the wall full of them! They havepastries, too, but I came later in the day and they were sold out. While my matcha was NOT good and I would never order it from there again, I would try their regular coffee drinks in the future. Not everyone does matcha well and that's okay. Im kind of a matcha snob, esp since I make my own at home, too. They have some tables outside to sit and enjoy your order. Parking is street, of course. Pricing was on par for the area. Childhood cafe is one of my favorite coffee shops in Washington, DC. Located just on the border of DuPont and U Street, this new addition provides amazing coffee creations and breakfast snacks. I absolutely love their breakfast burritos - heads up they only are available on the weekend! They also have seasonal cold foams and syrups, the newest favorite of mine is the almond cookie cold brew. It definitely can get crowded and have a line on weekends, so I highly recommend going during the week day if you can. The outdoor patio is great during the Spring to Fall seasons as it offers a bit of shade and a spot to catch up with friends or work during the day. I definitely would recommend it! read more

When I got home I added more milk to my drink and it tasted MUCH better. The croissant French toast was good, no complaints there. Someone bought me a brown sugar, oat milk latte from here once and it was delicious. It was exactly what I wanted and needed. However, I have been back since and was a little bit underwhelmed. I ordered the banana bread latte from here two times since that visit. The first time, I thought it was a fluke or a one off because it wasn't very good and there were like chunks in my coffee. It happened again the second time. Also, the quiche here is not very good at all. And it's definitely not worth the price. I've also had the chocolate chocolate chip muffin and it's fine, but it's not as good as some other bakeries I've been to nearby. This is a fine local alternative to a Starbucks, but it's definitely not my favorite local shop. Service was fine. The vibe inside is very casual and very local. It's definitely a small place that looks like somebody converted part of their house into a coffee shop. I'll probably come back when I'm in the area, but it's not that deep. Came on a Wednesday a little before 5pm. No line when I arrived but the shop filled up quickly with a few people stopping in during my time. When it's busy I imagine wait times are long so be prepared! The cafe is really cute and very small. There are about 8 seats alongside two bars, though I'd say only 2 people could sit at each comfortably. There is however a very spacious patio to sit! Really dynamic and innovative drink menu with a lot of interesting and different flavors. I opted for the strawberry pop tart latte and the strawberry pop tart pastry. Hard to rate the latte overall because as a basic latte it was great. The coffee really came thru and the flavor was robust. The "strawberry pop tart" element of the latte totally seemed to be missing for me. There were maybe 2 slurps of some strawberry puree in the drink, otherwise the latte isn't made with any kind of syrup so once I drank the puree at the bottom I really just had a regular latte with whipped cream on it. Definitely makes me question if their other latte flavors deliver because that one was a huge letdown even though I did really enjoy the plain latte overall. With more strawberry, I imagine it'd be pretty good but I was surprised by the total lack of strawberry flavor. The strawberry poptart pastry however slapped! Even at the end of the day it still tasted relatively fresh. Not too sweet and light and airy -- really great pastry especially with coffee. Service was friendly and quick. Seems like a nice neighborhood spot and a nice place to hang on the patio. Would definitely come back if in the area. Even though I'm not sure if the many different latte flavors actually live up to their creativity, I at least know I can get a good plain latte here! read more

While in town for a conference, I did my best researching cafes. I was so so so glad to have come across this spot! The girls working were helpful when I was ordering. I ordered the strawberry poptart latte that was one of the featured items on the chalkboard inside. I looked over several of their bakery options and landed on the raspberry loaf with lemon glaze. There are a few seats inside and more tables out front to sit. I sat inside by the window with a nice view of the plants and outside. My bakery item was provided right about, and it only took a few minutes for the latte. First off, the presentation of the strawberry poptart latte was gorgeous and OMG SO GOOD. The drink looked like a poptart and had a good amount of strawberry flavor. The raspberry loaf was scrumptious! I liked the raspberries throughout. Great neighborhood cafe. read more

It's small inside, but has a nice little patio and I could imagine would be great for some workday coffee. Place was packed with multiple people hard at work with their faces glued to a laptop screen. Very busy place. Barista (male) was sassy and witty which gave the place some character. The brown iced coffee tastes the same way it does at any other coffee shop. Was pretty good. The muffin was dry and tasted like dirt but I liked the chocolate bites in it. Wish we'd get a plate because it leaves many crumbs. My friend liked her matcha better here than at the Coupe. Would definitely be down to come back again but try something different. Super cute new cafe in the neighborhood. So happy to have a local option on this side of 17th street. Everyone who works here is very friendly and you get your items quickly.
