a cup with a straw

Review from January 26, 2011 I needed to get some lunch before I watched the IMAX movie at the Hearst Castle Visitor Center and decided to try out their cafeteria (called the Chief's Galley). They use Hearst Ranch beef in their burgers, and I added bacon. It was cooked just right, not too dry. They serve the cheeseburger with a pickle and kettle chips. Unfortunately the chips should have been kept separate because they got soggy under the cheeseburger and pickle. I will definitely eat here again if I am at the Visitor Center. There was a special burger that had avocado and bacon on it, this was probably the most popular item. When I got there around noon there was a totally long line, and a wait while they cooked the burger, but by the time I picked up the burger the line was totally gone!! Weird. There 32 ounce drink cup is $4.00 and is a refillable souvenir cup. I brought it back and refilled on my way out the door after the movie and museum. I will keep the cup in my car so I can get free refills if I ever come up here again.

1/3 pound Harris Ranch all beef cheeseburger with fries

It's the only place to eat once you're at the Castle. The menu is limited and overpriced of course, so choose wisely and go for the Harris Ranch 1/3 pound cheeseburger. Skip the saucy looking tri tip, mystery hot dog, chicken tenders, and anything on the Asian menu but don't pass up on the beer. At least that's available.

I had the sweet and sour pork over bowl of rice, I liked it. I think pork was deep fried first. It's like a food court style and they have salad and pizza on their menu. Oh and I think sandwiches too.

$2 fruit plate!

I'm on a low iodine diet for medical reasons and needed fruit. Thank goodness for precut fruit salad boxes! A reason why this receives a 5 star. Just what I needed. Plus the box says $5, and I got charged only $2. :D

Pulled pork sandwich and loaded baked potato with minestrone soup. Looks good but, this time looks are very deceiving!!

Decent food, overpriced, great friendly staff....your typical tourist trap. I ordered the pull pork sandwich with fries.

Good burger as the beef is said to be from the Hearst Ranch. Value is par for a tourist attraction.

Seriously overpriced food. Over $8 for a slice of cheese pizza? Clearly out to exploit a captive tour bus clientele.

Cambria Coffee - My small Baja Mocha - nice balance of mocha and warm spices like cinnamon! Very nice!

I've been coming to Cambria Coffee for years, and somehow they've managed to pull off the…read moreimpossible--they've never let me down. In a world where restaurants and coffee shops can be wildly inconsistent, this place just keeps showing up and doing what it does best. My go-to is always the Baja Mocha. At this point, it's less of a coffee order and more of a long-term relationship. It's rich, smooth, perfectly balanced, and just spicy enough to keep things interesting. Every time I tell myself I should try something different, the Baja Mocha gives me that "Don't be ridiculous" look, and I happily order it again. A visit also isn't complete without grabbing a pound of whole beans to take home. That way, I can continue pretending my kitchen is a quaint little coffee shop instead of just... my kitchen. The café itself has a ton of character. It's on the cozy side, which means it can fill up quickly, especially during busy times. If you're looking for acres of seating and total silence, this probably isn't your spot. But if you're looking for exceptional coffee, a welcoming atmosphere, and a place that feels like a true local favorite, you'll understand why people keep coming back. The staff is always entertaining in the best possible way. They're friendly, have personality, and somehow manage to keep things moving even when the place is buzzing. It's the kind of coffee shop where the people behind the counter seem like they're genuinely enjoying themselves, and that energy rubs off on everyone else. If you're passing through Cambria or lucky enough to live nearby, do yourself a favor and stop in. Just don't blame me when the Baja Mocha becomes your default order too. I tried branching out once... the Baja Mocha and I worked through it.

The Baja was not our favorite as it was very heavy on the spice which overpowered the drink. Our drink also was not served as hot as we normally would expect, but this did mean that it was drinkable temperature right away. The Moonstone was delicious; the flavors blended really well together for a fabulous drink. Service 4/5: The shop is quite small and can get cramped when it was as busy as it was that day. I chose to wait outside, but there really wasn't a way to know once my drinks were ready without trying to make my way past the crowd every once in a while.

We have been to the Scout Coffee location in SLO and this was the first time that we've been here at the Morro Bay location. We had an iced vanilla latte and hot mocha along with their morning bun. The mocha tastes a little bit more like a hot chocolate mix with espresso versus an old-fashioned mocha, but I was pleasantly surprised by how lightly sweet it was. The morning bun was one of the best morning buns I've ever had. The bakery for Scout Coffee is at this location and so all the pastries were very fresh. The location aesthetic was beautiful and they had a lovely large wooden community table that you can sit at as well as a cute area for kids to sit and play equip with a kid coffee shop wooden toy. Very sweet.

I ordered my chai hot with oat milk and vanilla on the sweeter side. I also ordered a chocolate banana bread. The banana was definitely rich, yummy. As for my chai, it genuinely just tasted like some very plain almost like water. You could taste a hint of chai but it just wasn't enough. I did ask for more vanilla but it didn't really help. I was sad cause I really wanted to love my chai, I rarely even order it hot but I was in the mood for one. My sister got hot chocolate which she enjoyed! Other than that it was cute inside and did have a good vibe going.

When she is not here, it is a different place. On slow weekdays the staff range from unfriendly to flat out rude, and they close early. Posted closing is 1 pm, but I have watched the closed sign go up at 12:30 and been turned away. The last excuse was a power outage. I live here. That outage lasted about ten minutes and had ended more than three hours earlier. And it is not just me. Last week I was in a coffee shop nearby, standing behind a woman who had come back to visit after moving away years ago. She had just walked out of Lily's five minutes earlier. She was telling her friend that it had always been her favorite place and that the owner was wonderful, but was shocked that the staff were nasty. She did not know I was listening and had no reason to say it except that it had just happened and she was upset about it because she was nostalgic and had been looking forward to going to her favorite place. If you show up in that last thirty minutes on a day that is not busy, you may find the door shut on you regardless of what the sign says. So go there when the owner is there or go more than thirty minutes before closing on days unlikely to be busy. Of course not all the staff are that unfriendly - The long term staff are friendly But too many aren't . They get laid off or quit them you get a new one with attitude . It's just I have bad luck showing up at wrong time.

Ordered the everything bagel with lox, comes with cucumber, tomato and red onion - tasted pretty fresh ingredients, except for the tomato which was soft. Also ordered the salted Nutella latte (iced), 1/4th sweet and it was perfect - good flavor, not too sweet. Place was busy at around 8am on a Tuesday; coffee came out fast and waited about 10 minutes for the bagel.
