This is my first review :). My dad was interested in raising some chicks for the Hen's colored eggs. I had done some research and everything pointed to "Chickens Galore". So my dad and I thought it was a good idea to visit. My dad and I drove out on Thursday evening 8/7/15 at around 5:30pm. Upon arrival, Mr. Russell welcomed us with a friendly smile and guided us step-by-step on choosing our breeds with the BEST customer service possible. All the birds from chick to adult looked super healthy and beautiful. The chicks were cute as well lol. At the end of the day, my dad had purchased some Ameraucanas, Black Copper Marans(Rare), Welsummers, Buff Orpingtons, couple of Gold Wyandottes and a Silver Wyandotte as well. Mr. Russell was kind enough to give my dad a Black Copper Maran Chick and a Naked-Neck (we asked for one lol) for free as well :). We were super happy at the end of the day. We definitely recommend anyone who is looking to purchase either one or many healthy beautiful chicks. Very pleased with my latest acquisitions from Chickens Galore. They have a very good selection of much less common breeds for So Cal such as Marans and Ameraucaunas, in different age groups. You typically only get to choose from one age group at the feed stores, and they're usually much more common layer breeds like Leghorns. If you want Silkies, this is the place for them! Their breeder sikies are showcased near the chick house, and they are wonderful, healthy little birds. There are mail order options for "cheaper" chicks, but this really isn't the kind of thing I want to mail order if I can help it, and well worth their price to be hand picked. I'm tapped out on chicks right now, but I will definitely come back for more in the future. read more

I don't know why people think they won't take back roosters; they certainly do. You won't get a refund but you can bring back a rooster. We are dropping off one we didn't even purchase from them. I'm thankful I didn't have to handle another way. read more

Chickens Galore - 1 Moran,1 lilac Sussex, 2 Easter egg layers - Pet Stores Near Me - Norco, California

We bought 12 pullets of ages 3 to 5 months. These were in addition to our existing flock of chickens from another breeder, so we could compare. Quality of the breeding is spotty. We have two "white" ameraucanas. One has grey spots all over, another is tan/beige on her top half. Health is also eh. One the twelve we bought died of coccidiosis and another seems to be ailing. One of the ones we bought must have had poultry lice, because now many of our chickens have them. Currently treating them. The prices were reasonable and selection of breeds ok, but with the time and coat of dealing with the various diseases the chickens we got, in retrospect it would have been cheaper to go with a more expensive hatchery. read more

We've had several experiences with Chicken's Galore and its the first place we go when we need a hen or have questions. All of our hens we have gotten from Russell and they not only lay great eggs, but they have excellent dispositions - come when you call them by name. We purchased a young hen from Russell and about 2 months later, she became ill and was dying. It was my 11 year old daughter's hen and she was heartbroken. Russell did everything he could to help us save her and in the end, he took her and put her down for us humanly and kindly. He genuinely cared that my daughter was so upset and never made her feel as if the chicken wasn't important or just an animal. He treated the hen with kindness and handled her gently and with compassion. I will never forget that. It's coming Spring and we have a trip planned to Chicken's Galore to add to our flock. read more

After doing some research on which breed of chicken seemed to fit what I am looking for in my backyard bird I decided on a Dominique chicken. A search in Orange County pointed me to Chickens Galore. I went out to see their facility and birds while I was finishing my coop. I was very impressed with the wide variety of bird breeds and the facility as a whole. Once my coop was finished I went back out to Chickens Galore and purchased our hen. The bird has a great temperament and has quickly acclimated to the yard and the other animals. Had a really cool experience at this place and highly recommend a visit. Fortunately I called first and found out they were only open 5-8 pm on weekdays or I would have come when it was closed. I've never been to Norco and it's a nice little country town. Chickens Galore is on a rural looking residential street close to the main drag with other homes that have businesses. I wasn't sure what kind of experience this would be, but was happy to see it was a spacious, clean, well organized operation. We walked into the yard and started browsing and then Russell the owner greeted us and was very friendly and helpful. I was amazed at the wonderful variety of breeds, too many to list. He has every stage chicken, from egg to full grown and they're all healthy, vaccinated and in nice enclosures. He took lots of time showing us different chickens and explaining their characteristics. There are unique, beautiful varieties at the same prices a feed store would charge. I got 2 month old Cream Legbar, Barnvelder, and Black Copper Marans hens - they're so awesome I love them! I do not like writing negative reviews. However, I feel I need to put this review on Yelp so other potential customers of Chicken Galore can be well informed. We bought five chickens from Chickens Galore just over 4 months ago. So far, three have died. Of the remaining two, one is a rooster which we cannot keep in our city. The owner of Chickens Galore, Russell, seems like a very nice person and the outwardly appearance of his backyard hatchery seems clean and well organized. He has a lot of chickens available and many different breeds. Our first impression of Chickens Galore was that it was a well-run hatchery that would provide us a solid first-time flock. I'll admit we are new backyard chicken owners and we started this adventure a little blindly. In all fairness, the owner of Chickens Galore will tell you that approximately 50 percent of your newly purchased flock will die. Unfortunately, what he won't tell you is that his hatchery is infected with Marek's Disease which is the reason he has a 50 percent death rate in the chickens he sells. If you are not familiar with Marek's, please study up on it before you buy chickens from this hatchery. it is a horrible disease and is very contagious. It is very heartbreaking disease to witness in a chicken. With the disease being very contagious, our two remaining chickens most certainly have the disease and will more than likely die. If they don't die, they are carriers of the disease which means we cannot introduce new chickens. We also cannot rehome our remaining two chickens because we would not want to further spread this disease. So right now, we are at a complete loss as to what to do with two infected birds, one of which is a rooster (not allowed in our city). Even if we do find a home for our rooster, we would then be left with one lonely hen. Chickens are flock animals who are very social and should not be alone. At this point, I wish someone would just take these birds from us. Honestly, I would like to just take them back to Chickens Galore and let them deal with the sick birds. At the end of the day, I wish I had done my homework and researched Chickens Galore better. I wish I had read the complaints on Yelp. Other flock owners, hatcheries and feed store owners I have spoken with have said that a 50 percent loss is in no way the norm. Please research this hatchery before you buy. read more

Bought three 1&1/2 month old chicks last October. One chick became very ill about a month after we got them. She ended up having what we think was Merrick's disease. We were told that all of their birds are vaccinated for the disease but after a month of terrible symptoms pointing to Merrick's disease, we had to put her out of her misery. All of our flock is healthy and has not had any problems with any sickness. This is the only chicken that has had an issue. Another chick that we bought has now turned out to be a bantam. We were told that this was going to be a full grown chicken and the chicken is full grown and weighing in at 2 pounds which is the size of a bantam chicken. Only 1 out of 3 chicks that we bought turned out "normal" or to be what we were told that we were getting. The chicken we had to put out of her misery was an Easter Egger, the bantam is an Americauna & the only normal chicken we got is a Rhode Island Red. All three chickens are and always have been very sketchy. We have another Rhode Island Red that is very friendly and walks up to you but the one purchased from Chickens Galore screems and runs at the site you, along with the Americauna. We also have another Americauna that is very friendly. Not sure if the chicks were not handled well as they were young (before we bought them) or what the reasoning is behind this, but it seems to be a coincidence that the only unfriendly chickens that we have, have come from Chickens Galore. Their set up is also not very nice, it's a backyard operation. I would not recommend purchasing chickens from them and I will not be returning to them either. read more

We Found Russell at Chickens Galore from Craigslist. He has a great selection of chickens including marans and ameraucanas. We were Very impressed with his set up and how the birds were cared for. It was fun just to walk around and look at all the birds there! Also, eggs were hatching when we went so it was a fun experience. Russell is a nice honest guy and his prices were very reasonable. We bought 12 chickens, from 2-4 months old at the end of 2013. We dealt with one of the younger helpers. We were told they were all vaccinated for Marek's and a variety of other diseases. Over the next few months we lost 6 of our chickens to Marek's. We lost 2 Buff Orpingtons and 4 Barred Rocks. We thought the rest were immune but last year we lost our favorite French Copper Maran to Marek's. Another issue we had was that one of the hens sold to us turned out to be a rooster a few months later. Since we live in Los Angeles we couldn't keep him due to the noise so we drove back to Norco to exchange him for a hen. It was the wrong time of year to get young hens (which they didn't tell us before we made the long drive) and they would not refund our money, though as we were leaving we saw the owner showing the rooster to interested customers for resale. It was heartbreaking for us and our 6 year old son, we had already grown quite attached to "Big Blue". They only offered to give us an old hen who was blind in one eye (also a possible symptom of Marek's disease). Be warned, there is no cure for Marek's, though we tried anything and everything. When you buy chicks or chickens be sure they are vaccinated. I give 2 stars instead of 1 because we love our chickens, and 4 are still going strong, laying eggs and providing hours of entertainment! read more

In July of 2017 I purchased 5, 1-day old baby chicks. Of the 5, 2 developed Marek's disease and one of them died yesterday. I do recall that day that I was advised to "purchase 5 baby chicks because some die". Oh really? Why wasn't it disclosed that there is a Marek's disease problem and that's why we recommend to buy 5 chicks?Mine didn't die as a baby chick, I saw her die a miserable death, being paralyzed and suffering from pain. Thank God she suffered for 3 days but I'm beyond devastated and heartbroken. She was my companion. I miss her dearly. Last year she had babies. I'm really worried for them and the 3 living adults (2 roosters and 1 hen). I am quite certain all of them have Marek's disease that's yet to manifest. Now I'm going crazy worrying when will I see my babies die of paralysis. I wish I had done my research of this place before I purchased my babies because based on what others have posted, I certainly would not have gone to this business. Now my house must be contaminated with Marek's and probably will never be able to purchase new chickens. Well, after seeing my baby suffer like that, I'm quite certain I'm done raising chickens. I am quite angry that this business knows it has an issue with Marek's and yet continues to sell infected baby chicks. I also happen to be a physician. I am very familiar with infection control and if a hospital has infectious breakouts like this business has, they would be shut down and inoperable until if and when that problem was corrected. So now I live in fear that my babies are going to die of miserable deaths. This is not fair to them nor to me as I love my pets dearly. Something has to be done. Great place and extremely friendly employees! I am new to the chicken raising stuff so I don't know to much and purchased a silver laced wyandotte about three months ago from Chickens Galore (I already had a Rhode Island Red, the same age, but purchased from somewhere else) . The property is very clean and all the chickens are very clean and well taken care of. Russell and his assistant were extremely nice and answered any question I had. This past weekend my three and a half month silver laced wyandotte had gotten sick, so I called all around not knowing much about chicken sicknesses and no one could help but recommend other places to call, who still couldn't help. I was able to get ahold of Russell and he recommended shots that are sold for $5 each, and each shot has three days worth. We drove out there last night to get them and again he was extremely friendly and took the time to show me how to properly give the chicken the shot and gave me some more helpful information. I can tell Russell is not in the business to make money, he is there from the kindness of his heart to take care of chickens and teach others about chickens. Dishonest!!! Don't shop here! Unfortunately, I only read the reviews and missed the "tips" (still trying to figure out how to write a review on here so I can warn others). I drove 45 minutes to his house where he sells chickens on the written (text) and verbal (phone) agreement he would provide 8-10 blue egg laying and sex link hens. I posted the picture of our text under the businesses pictures as proof. When I got there, not only did he say he did not have ANY laying hens available, he raised the price of the older chicks (blue layers) to $25. The heartless nature of this man was evident after I explained that I am a single mother of five children and the only reason I had driven the distance was because all of our chickens had been killed the day before while free ranging and my children were heartbroken. The highlight of their days is checking the coop throughout the day for eggs and love to guess what colors they might find. They were SO excited when I told them I was going to get more hens (especially when they learned I was bringing home blue layers. When I explained this to him, and that I expected him to at least honor his price for the blue egg pullets that weren't even going to lay for months, he refused. He knew I wasn't willing to go home empty handed to my children and he intended to capitalize on it. Several times he tried to trick me into purchasing more by saying he would throw in an extra chick if I purchased more. Eventually he agreed to sell me 4 at the price of 3 and when I had them all picked out acted like he hadn't JUST made the offer and told me he would only honor it if I purchased six. He also originally showed me which ones he was willing to sell for $16.00 and then when I would choose the chickens he would tell me the ones I had picked were actually the $25.00 chicks. I was there for over an hour just trying to get him to honor his word and stick to a price he had just quoted. When I told him I wasn't happy with what he'd done he then refused to even sell me the chicks telling me he didn't want someone to leave unhappy with what they purchased. I told him there was NO WAY I was going to come home to my babies empty handed, and that if ANY other place was open (it was already after 8pm by that time) trust me, I would definitely go somewhere else. I even made SEVERAL calls while there, to find ANY place open that I could go with no luck. The weird part is he kept repeating the phrase "look, it's not like I lured youhere uunder false pretenses" over and over again, while I was trying to explain that's EXACTLY what he did. Twice by text I asked how much his LAYERS were and after our phone conversation he completely lied. In a last ditch effort to get him to show a fraction of decency and integrity I asked if he would give me a $3.00 discount toward my gas which was met with a flat out "no" I really can't believe this guy is still in business. Even his coops are sub par. He was putting one together when I got there and I watched him glue and use only two diagonal screws to assemble the corners. We decided to start our first flock of chickens back in December. I talked to Russell on the phone a couple times before making the drive and found him to be extremely helpful and informative. We ended up purchasing a coop, 8 chicks, and all the supplies we would need for a great price. He even modified the coop to be used as a brooder box for a small fee and helped attach it to the roof of our car so we could get it home. The coop is really nice. It is way higher quality than the ones we looked at at local feed stores. We've been really happy with it. Our chicks were healthy and strong and never had any illness. All the chicks he picked out for us ended up being hens and are great layers. I was expecting more roosters, so that was a pleasant surprise. We were driving out to Palm Desert a couple weekends ago and decided to stop by for another nesting box. He didn't have one like the one we already bought from him, so he asked us to wait a few minutes, built us one right on the spot, and only charged us $5! We are hoping to have a broody hen so we can buy some fertilized eggs from Chickens Galore and hatch even more breeds. He has such a great selection. read more

We have been planning to get Chickens for months and I did my homework. Based on the reviews, I decided to drive 45 minutes to Norco to Chickens Galore. The service was great and they had the breeds I wanted. I walked away with six happy chicks and purchased food from them as well to start out. My horror started 6 days after having the chicks at home. One became lethargic in the morning and by the evening the chick had passed. The next morning, another chick became lethargic and started having blood in its droppings. My friend who is a farm vet came over and diagnosed it as coccidiosis. She gave me some medicine to treat all the chicks and the sick chick. The sick chick lived 4 more days but passed. The other 4 chicks survived the treatment and are now healthy and happy. Russell offered replacement chicks but I chose not to get any more in fear of it happening again so went and picked some up from the local farm store 10 minutes from my house. My chicks were all raised indoors and I had no other chickens that would of caused them to be exposed to high amounts of coccidiosis. So I would not make a special trip to Norco if you have chicks that are available locally. read more

I thought I was happy with this place when I first got my chickens....but now I'm just totally frustrated. I have lost 5 chickens out of eight of my chickens and two wound up being roosters which I had all of them sexed when I bought them. So pretty much I have two hens and a rooster because I had to sell the other rooster....I didn't even want a rooster at all. OUT OF 8 I purchase only 3 survived and that is even questionable. I have two more now....(from the same place) but they are still young. All of them are dying from unrelated issues....maybe even genetic? I have two in the garage that I think I have to cull. Including one with a twisted neck....it is to time consuming and to much money to try to fix it and I am almost about to give up on chickens all together. The people at the hatchery are friendly and very informative but I think something is wrong with their chickens. He also informed us of the specific feed requirements of a growing turkey versus a growing chicken. He is very knowledgeable and very helpful. Having stopped by Chickens Galore briefly several months before, we had had plenty of intermittent time to compare Russell's operation with others and were anxious to return. What we found in Russell was an honest and personable man who was over-the-top informative and helpful. What a pleasure to do business with someone who has integrity. Not always what you get these days. As far as the unflattering and downright scathing review by the one woman, I might suggest that one refrain from chicken shopping if it's one's "time of the month." Let's face it, you're about to make a purchase which will likely affect your life for the next 5 years. No time to get cheap. If you like the chicken and it's $25 instead of $16, buy it. It's called "getting the big picture." And then to ask for a gas credit? I'd love to throw that up to Judge Judy.....she'd have a field day with that one. 5 stars for Russell. read more

I have never, ever written a negative review on Yelp before... but as I watch my last 2 chickens (of 6) suffering a terrible death, I feel compelled to say something. I bought 6 baby chick's in March. Chickens Galore had been recommended, so I didn't pay much attention to the reviews. After getting them home, and falling in love, I was alerted to the fact that many of the reviews on here were having problems with Marek`s disease. I called Russell and left a message. He called back and was very angry and aggressive, he said most of the complaints were from competitors and that backyard chicken owners (such as my self) were the problem with spreading disease because we didn't "cull" any sick birds. I felt frustrated with this answer, but not discouraged...I had 6 baby chick's counting on me. We did everything we could to keep them heathly and safe, even installing a misting system and an expensive outdoor swamp cooler (we live in palm desert). We made sure they were always cool, dry, had plenty of good food and happy. Our first chicken, a French black copper maran, went down about 2 months ago. We thought at first she had an impacted crop,and treated her for that. My girlfriend is a head tech for a veterinary hospital, so we were able to take her in to their bird expert who confirmed it was Marek's. One by one our beautiful little flock got sick. I am not against traditional means of culling, but these poor girls had suffered and we were able euthanize them because of our situation. I will be taking my last 2 girls to be euthanized tomorrow. My sweet Welsummer has a large oozing tumor on her neck, along with many smaller ones and my last easter egger is lethargic and looks terrible. I think this place knows they are selling infected birds. Marek's lives in the soil, can travel miles and can be carried by wild birds. There goes my dream of having a backyard flock. Shame on you guys. Just because people want "pet chickens" doesn't mean we deserve to be lied to and taken advantage of. read more

This past Easter we purchased 6 chicks from Chickens Galore. Our experience was wonderful. We had to drive a distance to get to Norco and rush back so pour boys didn't know we had left as the chicks were from the Easter Bunny. They got us in and out and set us up with a starter kit. Now 5 months later all but one of the ladies is providing us with eggs on a daily basis, so exciting! A note - Russell wasn't available when we purchased the chicks so we bought from his daughter. Although she was able to answer most our questions some she couldn't. Before we got home Russell had called us on our cell to answer the other questions we had. He may not be available all hours of the day, but he makes an effort to call back - we have been very happy. I LOVE THIS PLACE! And Russell too!! He is so super approachable, answers the phone himself, and always has time for novice, first time chicken buyers! We made ourselves 'second-time chicken buyers" today and he was just as amazing as he was 2 1/2 years ago when we ventured into the chicken owner world. We had 3 chicks given to us by our daughter's school, so we only bought 2 in 2012 from him. They were the last two to survive our feral cat, raccoon, coyote infested neighborhood. We wanted to get friends for our lone survivor, so we picked up five 4-day old chicks today. He came to see what we had selected so we could pay, and he nabbed one, and returned with a different one saying the one my kids picked was not as active and may be less likely to survive. I was in California is August 2014 visiting family. I wanted to get my sister-in-law a gift for letting us invade her house for three weeks. She was trying to find some Black Copper Marans for her flock. I found Chickens Galore online and the reviews were excellent so we drove up there our last night there. Russell had a large selection of birds and we chose two Black Marans and one Splash Maran. I should have considered it a warning when I noticed a dead bird in one of the pens to begin with because by December one of the Black Marans and the Splash Maran had died. My sister-in-law has raised chickens for many years so inexperience isn't an issue. Literally signed up for Yelp just to write this review. VERY disappointed with my experience with this business today. Spoke with the owner via text and email to confirm a certain breed would be there and available. He also called and left a message as well, stating he knew I was coming and was looking forward to our business. Let the owner know what time I would be there and that I was for sure coming this evening, confirmed that what I was going to get was still in stock. Drove 45 min to get there to find they had been "sold 15 minutes earlier". SO frustrating to have not only confirmed they were there and discussed when I'd be arriving to show up to find they were gone. Then another breed that a few days before I had inquired about and was told there were plenty of, were also sold out until he randomly found a few mixed in with other birds. These were also way overpriced for their age and for not being sexed. He made no attempt to make things right. As a business person myself and with many, many years in retail and the restaurant industry I was shocked at his customer service skills. His only response was "Im not home during the day, I cannot guarantee birds". Well if this is the case then don't confirm with me an hour before I arrive that the birds are available if they aren't. Not doing business with this place ever and making sure everyone I know will not be doing so either. Don't waste your time. Overpriced. Go to your local feed store. Trust me, you will find better birds at a better price. read more
