Been purchasing from Russel for over 13 years now. I am small city backyard chicken owner, so I never have more then 5 hens at once. I can only get females (L.A. county ordinance) and I have to say, although the chickens are not sexed, and Russel makes it clear he cannot guarantee , I have never once gotten an accidental rooster. All the girls have always been healthy. The only problem is it's a little far for me and the hours are limited and he gets sold out quickly, I mean hear today and gone today! We love our baby silkies!! It's only day 3, but everyone seems happy, healthy, and alert! They mixed nicely with our 2 week old Egger chicks and it's so cute watching them all cuddle. It was great working with Russell too - he's been in the chicken biz for decades so he knows his stuff! Their set up for the brooders and coops is pretty awesome and clean. It's a nicely run family operation over there! But be aware, no reservations for chicks really as they usually sell out day of. We kept trying to make an appt or set some aside, but your best bet is to call Friday (day after hatch day) and get there as soon as they open (~4pm). We have become backyard chicken owners! So far so good. We bought a total of 5 hens. Two of them died early. The first one that died we called and they let us choose another one. When the second one died we didn't bother to go back. The hen just didn't grow and seemed pretty small. I think it was a bad choice on our part. We are happy with the three we have now. I called Russell looking for a couple silkie chicks after I had a couple pass away from another breeder. If my daughters found out that a chick named Bruno and Chelsea the chicken died, I do not think they would have recovered emotionally I explained my situation, what I was looking for, and asked if he had a minimum limit. Thankfully, he does not have a minimum limit. He was very kind from the minute he picked up the phone. I drove to his house that night, he took me into his hatchling house and allowed me to pick the chicks I wanted. Right off the bat I noticed how clean and organized his operation is. All of his chickens looked healthy and active. He took the time to answer my questions, let me poke around for a bit, then offered for me to bring my kids down on the weekend to help hatch chicks. I have two beautiful heavy layer Ameraucana hens that came from "Chickens Galore." The hens consistently produce baby blue eggs that we love. Since Russell, the owner, was so helpful and friendly, I wanted to do business with him again. This time I needed some chicks to be given as Christmas gifts for my kids. I called ahead to confirm what I was looking for and drove over with my family. We had Carlos helping us this time around and he was awesome. We were made to feel very welcome, even though we had a little one and a ton of questions. When it was all said and done, we left Chickens Galore with a baby Australorp, two Wyandottes, a blue Maran and a Barnvelder. All of the above were just a few days old. We even picked up all the random supplies that we were missing. A light bulb, some pine bedding and a bag of starter food. This is my go to place for chicks, chickens and good information regarding my new found love. Chicken farming. Seriously, this hobby becomes very addictive. Lol. My best friend and I decided to try out having suburban chickens lol so we bought the coop and got everything set and ready, but needed actual chickens to complete our set up. We found a guy near by us who said he had egg laying chickens so we headed out to his place only to find out that when we asked what breeds he had, his response was brown and black. Nope, not a breed, just a color. So we avoided him, and were on a desperate search for a legit place. CHICKENS GALORE IS EXACTLY THAT! We drove the hour and a half out there to pick out our babies, and it was absolutely worth it. Russell was super helpful over the phone. We asked him a bunch of questions. He let us know what breeds, he had, their ages, and useful information about what we'd need or what to expect. When we got there, everything was clean and well managed. The young guy who helped us was super nice, helpful, and got everything we needed and helped load the car. We bought a Welsummer (we named Tali) and a New Jersey Giant (we named Tex). Both are beautiful and good natured and are adjusting well to their new home. This place is great. Great people, great chickens. You really can't go wrong. It's a bit of a drive for us, but I'll do it again next time we get more chickens. read more

We have purchased a total of 11 chickens here. 2 have died from mareks disease. Out of the 11 chickens we ended up with 4 roosters. Although we received helpful information I feel we were mislead. Initially we were told the first 8 would all be hens. When we returned to buy 3 more birds we were told he only sells straight run. The birds are expensive for straight run IMO. Of the last 3 purchased for $70 2 of them are cockerels. The birds that haven't gotten sick are beautiful and great egg layers. read more

We have purchased chicks from Chickens Galore in Norco since 2012. Until this year, they were all healthy, friendly, and all the breeds Russel (the owner) said they were. Recently though we purchased 24 chicks from him in two batches. They have all died of Marek's except three and those three aren't past the disease-prone age yet. Marek's is an absolutely heartbreaking virus, as others here have noted, and if your flock has it your beautiful, sweet birds will die slow, painful deaths in quick succession, one after the other. The Marek's must have come from Chickens Galore because we don't have friends with chickens and all of our chickens have come from here. Our Marek's cases were confirmed by a vet from a necropsy done on our friendly, beloved bantam pullet. She would sit on my shoulder and was such a sweet little thing. The last batch of 12 also had Fowl Pox, another terrible disease. Only one died from wet fowl pox (a gruesome way to die), but the others needed to be treated several times a day. We've spent well over $400 (including the cost of rare/bantam birds, food, and medicine) this year because Chickens Galore has infected birds and they keep selling them to people. Please, please, please do not step foot there or you risk bringing a disease back to your flock that takes years to get rid of. In addition to the Marek's and Fowl Pox, some of our birds weren't even the breeds Russel said they were. He is selling mixed breeds as rare/heritage breeds. I don't have anything against mixed breed chickens, but really don't like to be lied to and don't want up to $25 for a bird that has been purposefully mislabeled. Stay away from this place! Update: Our funny little Frizzle Rooster had to be euthanized due to the Marek's our birds contracted from Chickens Galore. It was absolutely heartbreaking. So of the 24 chicks we purchased from Russell, only *2* are alive now and they could still succumb to Marek's. Please, please, please do not purchased any birds from this place. I have been a backyard chicken owner since 2012 and Marek's has caused me to reconsider ever getting another chick. Not only will all of your chickens be exposed to this awful disease, you will have the virus in your soil for 3+ years. Second update: Three more hens have come down with Marek's and one has died. So this means that out of 24 chicks that were purchased from Russell, only *1* is alive thanks to Marek's. I'm just waiting for all the chickens I had before Chicken's Galore sold me chicks with Marek's to die so I can spend a few years trying to get the virus out of my soil and start raising chickens again. Third update: All 24 chicks purchased from Chickens Galore have died of verified Marek's disease. This is a terrible disease that will infect your entire flock. Please stay away from this place if you care about the health of your chickens. read more

We purchased 2 black sex link and one ameraucana in Feb 2015. They were 5-6 weeks old per the text conversation earlier that week. It's a backyard family operation and you may drive right by it so it's best to have a second set of eyes with you. We were the only ones there and it took time for someone to greet us, we were not even sure we were in the right place. The younger guy that helped us seemed very disinterested. But we got our birds, paid and left. No paperwork or receipt. About six weeks later, one of the sex links started limping. I segregated her and tried nursing her to health inside and took her to an "exotic pet" vet who said it was a sprain. Well a couple days later she passed away So we're down to two hens. We got our first egg today 6/17/15 from the sex link. Ameraucana has not laid anything yet. read more

Bought a new coop and a baby black copper maran to add to my brooder box. I agree with others the chicks are a bit pricey compared to the feed store, but the selection was pretty fantastic and I was very pleased to find black and blue copper marans to complement my Easter eggers. I just set up the coop so I haven't used it enough for a proper review but I was very pleased with the logical, utilitarian design. Ya'll can keep your silly cottages and chicken castles: I wanted adequate space for my chickens and a safe, urban predator-proof coop (you might want to add hardware cloth or pavers to block digging but that is optional). It is heavy duty with good materials, including galvanized steel roof and quality construction (I was pleased with the rubber washers on the roof screws: little details add up for a lasting coop). I plan on limited free ranging but I will not feel at all bad about their 32 sq feet of range for my 6 birds on days when they don't have full yard access; its way more space than similarly priced coops and it would be super easy to extend if necessary. Overall I am very satisfied with the quality and value of this coop. read more

I bought six chickens from here last spring (I had a baby, took awhile to post a review.) The chickens were beautiful, and I found the gentleman I spoke to very knowledgeable about chickens and their care. They have some lovely birds here, and they all look very well taken care of. Unfortunately, all six of my birds died from confirmed Marek's disease within two months of purchase. Nobody came to my property in that time period that had chickens, nor had any other chickens been brought here. They were protected against outside birds and kept in a clean, fully-contained run. So they had to have come with it. It was a very sad situation for my young son, who had really wanted these chickens as pets and was the one to find the first one showing signs of paralysis. We had to humanely euthanize several of the hens as the symptoms showed up. So, good review for the place itself and the information they can offer, but poor review for the quality of the birds purchased. I'm not sure I'll return. read more

This is also our personal experience with buying chicks from chickens galore but be warned. We've bought about twenty chicks from here and all have died of mareks around egg laying age. We were told by the owner that they were vaccinated for disease the first time and just a meager two weeks later were told that nope they never vaccinate them . So clearly we were lied to and trust was lost with this company. We were also informed that he had a large bird die off with his turkeys and he blamed it on possible sabotage. We didn't think about it at the time but if there was some type of infection on his property odds are other birds have it and with no vaccinations it's a gamble and one will most likely kill all. So be warned make sure to buy vaccinated chickens! UPDATE: we had our dead chickens undergo necropsy with the UCDAVIS California animal health and safety lab and it was mareks. After talking with them about this they stated that for them to sell chickens without vaccine is irresponsible and ridiculous due to mareks being widespread in California. Get your birds vaccinated!!! This must be done soon after hatching. read more

Ok, so I have a bit of Veruca Salt streak. I wanted my ordinance allowance of 4 hens and I wanted them now! (the dead of winter) Oh, and they should lay unique colored eggs, not available at even the farmer's market. Oh, and I wanted them to be pretty mature, so I wouldn't need to worry about incubators and peep feed and culling roosters and protecting them from my very interested dogs and all that hassle. Russell and his family are a great source for backyard farmers, particularly those interested in egg layers. I got 2 outdoor-ready French Black Copper Marans who matured to lay dark speckled brown egg "zeppelins" as their pet sitters took to calling them. I also go 2 Araucanas who lay like clockwork khaki to blueish eggs you could hide at Easter without needing to dye. Did I mention they also demolish pretty much every conceivable veggie table scrap and make heavy duty crop fertilizer? They're also pretty easy going, peaceful, resourceful bunch. My BF's mom was so taken with them that we just made another pilgrimage to get her a plucky Blue Andalusian, a Black Sex Link, and another French Copper Maran. If I weren't ordinance-capped, I'd build an even bigger flock with Russell's stock. read more

Not really sure why this place is categorized under "Meat Shops", it's really more of a place to purchase backyard chickens. There's certainly much cheaper spots to get meat birds! I've been keeping chickens for several years now, and have sourced pullets from large hatcheries through the mail, local breeders, and small backyard farms. Chickens Galore wins hands down for selection alone- they have everything from simple "laying machine" hybrids to fancy heritage breeds like French black copper Marans (which lays dark chocolate colored eggs) and adorable bantam silkies (odd muppet-looking creatures with downy kitten-like feathers.) Ages of the birds range from newly-hatched up to several months old, if you're interested in securing a definite hen (as opposed to a surprise rooster) at point of lay. Additional pluses are the fact that the chickens are all vaccinated and none are beak trimmed (which unsightly and cruel, and is very common with larger hatcheries.) The facility is clean, well organized, and the owner is very patient and helpful in helping you pick out your birds. I came home with a 3 month old light brahma and a French black copper maran, both of which are healthy, well mannered, and will be laying soon. Well worth the drive! read more

I recently made a trek from Bellflower out to Norco to pick up some baby chicks from Russel, and it was well worth it. I'm a fan of the big fluffy breeds like Wyandottes, Orpingtons, Cochins and Brahmas, and he has them all. I ended up with 2 cochins, a brahma, and 4 Wyandottes, 2 of which are the rare blue laced red coloration which I've been drooling over for months. As a suburban chicken owner, I only get to have a few birds, so I want them to be impressive, and Russel helped make that happen without me having to buy birds from 4 different sources. He's a real honest, no nonsense guy who runs a very sanitary and efficient chicken raising operation. If you're thinking about getting chickens from him, I can say from first hand experience that it's totally worth the drive. read more
