Having said that I suggest you only order chicken because after ordering on Grubhub I didn't get either of the two sides I ordered. I finally checked this place out last weekend. I was leaving the Pratt library in Highlandtown and knew I had to get something to eat before going grocery shopping (or else I would buy useless crap, of course). Chicken Rico was right across the street. Just follow Frank Zappa's nose and you're there. So, this is my first taste of Peruvian chicken so I can't stack it up with the other joints but MAN!!! This chicken the best I've ever had. Rotisserie style with a blend of spices that send me into tasty food sensory overload! Their sides are really big and they give you a generous helping of everything. For a small walk-in place they have a good number of tables for eating in but most of the orders I saw were take-out. This place is similar to a place we love near upper Marlboro. Chicken is succulent and perfectly cooked. Great side options that are fresh and yummy. The price is perfect for individual meals and amazing for family meals. They also deliver and have great hours every day. This place is worth your time. My boyfriend and I order from here frequently using Door Dash. However today, when we got our meal, we were told by the Dasher that they were out of the 20 oz Pepsi we ordered and she tried to get the person at the restaurant to sub 2 cans and the person was very nasty and basically gave us whatever soda he wanted us to have. First of all, this was my first experience with anything Peruvian and what a blasty blast it was. The neighborhood was a bit shady (I wouldn't go at night without a few bodyguards or some pepper spray) but we marched in as a Family. There was a mixed crowd inside but mostly Latinos so you know it has to be decent at least. You go through a line and peer through the foggy glass walls of steam coming from all the side options and their pile of Rotisserie whole chickens. I knew what I was going to order based on the reviews I read so I ordered the 1/4 chicken, fried rice, and plantains. They give you such large portions that you could easily split a plate if you weren't terribly hungry. I was starving and I ate my ENTIRE plate! The Chicken was moist and the skin was crispy... the marinade they used filled in every crevice of that sweet little chicken. That chicken left this World with the highest honors. I'm more of a "sides" gal and when I had the plantains and dipped it into the mystery pale yello sauce that I was instructed to by Yelpers (everyone that works there only speaks Espanol).... Ooooh-em-geee! The best I've ever had and I've had many. It was perfectly tender but not mushy...crispy and gooey on the edges. My Lawd! The chicken fried rice was simple but perfected. The raw green onions gives it the texture it desires. My husband ordered black beans and those were perfectly seasoned. My whole plate to include a soda can of your choice was $7.50 If I would've known what it was going to taste like ahead of time, I would've easily paid twice as much and not even cared.... paper plate and all. You could walk right by Chicken Rico without knowing how amazing it is. What a mistake that would be. The chicken here is some of the best, if not the best, chicken I've ever had. And it's cheap! The chicken is crispy and flavorful. And the dark meat? To die for. Seriously, don't even bother trying to cut this chicken up. You have to get messy to eat this chicken. Getting every morsel from the bones is totally worth it! The icing on the cake is the sides. I love plantains and the plantains here are amazing. Gooey, sweet, and fresh. And trust me, they aren't stingy with the sides so you'll get your fill. The fried rice is delicious as well. I could tell the scallions were fresh and rice was cooked perfectly. My clients insisted I eat here today it was my first visit. They raved about how good the chicken and rice are. They eat here whenever they have to travel to highlandtown. We went at lunch time it was about 12:30pm. I decided to try the 1/4 chicken. I was given the white meat. I did not know what the sides were and the person taking the order did not speak English causing a bit of a barrier so they chose for me. Ended up with yucca fries which look and taste like steak fries to me. Also a white rice which had a bit of a green color to is from the seasoning. The chicken food was just ok. It was hot and the portions were large. It won't be something I'll run back to try again. The green sauce they give you is very spicy. And the yellow closely resembles honey mustard. Fun delicious place if you're in the mood for chicken! I tried the dark meat combo and it came with a huge leg and thigh. Add two sides and a drink and it's around $10!. The portions are HUGE and they really give you a heaping moundful of each side. I tried the plantains and would highly recommend them. They were a little crispy on the edges and so soft and sweet in the middle. I also got mashed potatoes, which were underwhelming. Definitely tasted like they came out of a giant box. However, the potatoes come with gravy and mixing that with the chicken was delicious. We went there around 1:00 and there was a fairly short line and it moved quickly. The only reason I probably give it 4 instead of 5 is because I'm comparing it to El Pollo Rico in Arlington which is just ridiculously hard to beat. This place comes pretty damn close. Really well roasted, succulent chicken (I always go for dark meat), tasty fries (some of the best!), plantains were tasty but a bit too oily, and I honestly just got salad as my 3rd side bc I wanted to add balance to the meal but it didn't get devoured like everything else did :P The yellow and green sauce was the bomb, I wish they'd give more so I didn't have to ration myself along the way. Had the alfajor at the end, it was okay, not the tastiest but I also feel like it's one of those authentic Latin American desserts that would remind you of home if you grew up on them but I didn't. This review is mostly symbolic, as a restaurant with otherwise-strong ratings probably won't see a dip in business thanks to one, dissatisfied (would-be) customer. That said, I ordered from Chicken Rico on July 4th (specifically because it was supposed to remain open for two hours *after* my order was placed (a hefty order at that, given that they have a $25 minimum for delivery orders), notwithstanding the holiday. After nearly an hour of not hearing anything from the restaurant (usually a good-to-null sign), GrubHub called to inform me that Chicken Rico would not be honoring my order because they chose to close early for the holiday. While I can understand closing early, I can't understand (1) why closing early should have affected an order I placed an hour ahead of the decision, and (2) why GrubHub was left holding the bag in re: letting me know of that decision. In my opinion (for whatever it's worth), Chicken Rico's handling of my order (and its cancellation) reflects an embarrassing lack of consideration for a first-time customer (me) and its partner/vendor (GrubHub). And given the number of Peruvian alternatives in downtown Baltimore (seriously, just search Yelp for "Peruvian," and you'll be presented with several, higher-rated options), I'm moderately offended by Chicken Rico's conduct in this instance. Suffice it to say that I have no intention of attempting a future order, and I think you'd be well-advised to take a similar approach. read more

I've been here a lot, too many times to count. I started coming in 2009 when my guy at the time wanted to show me his favorite place. It is now my favorite place. The yellow sauce with rice or chicken is delicious and my son loves their plantain. Only downside is the location because parking is hard. Sometimes I can find parking on the side streets but they have parking meters everywhere. I tried going at lunchtime one weekday and I was going to do my normal, park on the side street real quick before I get a ticket routine, but I saw an officer walking around ticketing people so I couldn't get food that day. To satisfy the unplanned but rapidly intensifying craving, we went around the corner to Chicken Rico. I was not disappointed!! I have had many a Peruvian chicken in my day, and this is my favorite that I can remember. It was moist but not greasy, the skin was crispy even after a ride home in a take out container. The salad had more veggies than most, and the black beans were flavorful but not overly salty and not mushy. Everything was excellent, the service was good, and prices were reasonable. I'm in. If you want authentic, cheap, and tasty Peruvian chicken look no further. Although it's a chain, this location does it right. I went at lunch with a coworker and got the half chicken and two sides for $10. It's a really good deal because we eat a lot and it definitely leaves you satisfied. The chicken is very juicy and savory. Just waiting in line smelling that coal grill made me salivate. You can't over look the sides either, they have a variety from white/fried rice, spinach with mashed potatoes, French fries, yuka fries, veggies, and more. I would definitely recommend to my friends and family. This location also televises soccer games if you're into that and carries Inca cola which pairs really well with the food. Such a good deal for so much delicious food! You can get a whole chicken loaded with 2 overflowing sides for about $20. Their chicken is juicy and flavorful. I've only tried two sides because I've like them so much - the yucca fries and plantains. I think both sides are just deep fried from frozen but they still hit the spot. It comes with 2 sauces, a spicy green one and a mayonnaise like yellow sauce. I like to mix the two together and eat it with the chicken and yucca :) read more

We came here once because of the high ratings, and maybe I'm rounding down a star because I had high hopes for Chicken Rico, but it was just pretty good. Pollo a la brasa is inherently great, and I've been to a dozen different places that serve it, so they get graded on a curve. This one was unremarkable, not worth the trip from Hamilton-Lauraville. I didn't think it was any better than El Gran Pollo, in Towson, which, again, is pretty decent. I believe the sides weren't quite as good here.
