Was not a fan. But I really enjoyed the new honey pepper pimento with grilled chicken. I'm a fan now.

The…read moreMoist Towelette is/was often placed on one's food tray as a bit of: a) Consideration on the part of the vendor b) Unintentional warning of an impending encounter of the greasy kind! c) Both of the above, especially at fried chicken venues! Along with the 'lobster bib' - a relic of the 60's that for reasons beyond quaintness has managed to cling to the present, unfortunately all to often needed. In Crossville, TN on a drenchingly wet Friday afternoon, not looking towards a construction-delayed drive to Knoxville via I-40, and in dire need of substance, I whipped the White Mule into a Bojangles near the interstate, not out of chicken-induced desire, but because the location had great exit/entrance traits on a busy access highway. Lucky me. Bojangles has undergone something of a renaissance, after imploding in a franchise-induced restructuring process begun in the 80's, a casualty of the 'chicken wars'. Frankly, I had written off ever seeing another in this region. They disappeared, as quickly as a midway at a fairground, or spring snow in April. And that was a loss, for Bojangles was the first franchise in the area to offer 'breakfast-like' items all through the day. While other venues slammed the door on breakfast at 10:30, Bo offered tasty (if greasy), chicken and pork items all day to breakfast junkies such as Your's Truly. They were before their time, and the time just wasn't right. Mr Sanders & K. Rodgers had the bird market cornered, and it was starving time for any newcomers to the chicken-oriented table. Well....Bo is BACK! And in a big way. The franchise is marking their turf and standing tall with the big boys, with clean, modern, well-maintained venues, in locations convenient for the traveler or the local fellow seeking a tasty chicken-fix. Despite a dining room filled with coat & ties, families, damp construction folk, and the occasional table of locals, cleanliness was the order of the day, with tables, carpets, and chairs regularly wiped and ordered. The restroom was maintained and well-stocked. On this afternoon, I selected the biscuit two-piece, with a side of mac 'n cheese. My order was waiting for me as I walked to the end of the counter. The chicken was piping-hot, the mac 'n cheese rich and creamy, the biscuit, soft, golden brown, and flaky. One-star deduct for the strange "spork-object" masquerading as a dining implement. Oh; and NO 'moist towelette' needed!

I'm currently sitting in the lobby at Bojangles and honestly really disappointed. We were told it…read morewould be a 15 minute wait for mac and cheese, so we decided not to order it to avoid the delay yet we still waited 35 minutes for our food. There were only two of us and one other customer in the restaurant. What made it worse is that when our food was finally ready, it was just kept behind the counter and no one called our name or told us it was up. We didn't even know it was sitting there until my fiancé went up to ask about it, and that's when she pulled it from behind the counter. On top of that, the coleslaw I received was brown and wilted definitely not fresh and the food was room temp not even warm . Overall, very poor communication and disappointing food quality. It looked like it was a bunch of kids standing around with no supervisor or a manager around

Some restaurants dabble in the deep fryer. Champy's Famous Fried Chicken treats it like a…read morecompetitive sport. Walking in, the place feels like it somehow drifted inland from a beach town. Casual, colorful, the kind of spot where you expect someone to walk in wearing flip flops and carrying a fishing pole. Comfortable vibe. Easy place to settle in and see what the fryer can do. First up were the fried green tomatoes. They came out looking like they'd just won a beauty pageant. Crispy outside, tender inside, cooked exactly right. Texture nailed. But flavor-wise they felt like they forgot their gym bag at home. Needed salt. Needed a little personality. A rare moment where the fryer did its job but the seasoning clocked out early. Then the headliner arrived. The fried chicken at Champy's Famous Fried Chicken has a reputation to protect, and thankfully it shows up ready to work. Crisp, flavorful crust. Juicy inside. The kind of chicken that crunches just enough to make everyone at the table look over and get jealous. "If the deep fryer had a Hall of Fame, Champy's chicken is getting a first-ballot vote." And then came the move that sealed the deal. A dip into Champy sauce. Suddenly the flavor level jumped another notch. Salty, tangy, just enough punch to make the crust shine even more. The sleeper hit though? The cole slaw. Creamy, balanced, and actually refreshing next to all the fried goodness. It's the quiet kid in class who ends up acing the exam. Easy to overlook, but absolutely worth ordering. Now for the tiny curveball. I happened to land there on karaoke night. And let's just say... the speakers believed they were performing at an arena concert. Loud enough that conversation required leaning halfway across the table and reading lips. On the flip side, the crowd was clearly having a blast. A few genuinely good singers, a few that were more... enthusiastic than talented, and plenty of people cheering them on. Honestly, respect to anyone with the courage to grab a microphone in a room full of strangers. So no star deductions for that. The people who showed up to sing were having the time of their lives. Bottom line, Champy's Famous Fried Chicken is a fun place with seriously good fried chicken. Order the bird, grab the slaw, lean into the fried side of the menu, and enjoy the show if karaoke happens to be on the schedule. Just maybe bring your singing voice... or your earplugs.
