We used Yelp and found Chicago Handy highly related for smaller to larger home projects. I purchased an electric fireplace that needed to be mounted on a drywall. Neither of us are handy (it sat leaned against a couch for three months to reiterate this), so I called Norbert yesterday (Friday) with hopes of getting a Monday appointment. Norbert throughly covered all the questions he needed answered PRIOR to arriving to ensure an efficient wall mount. He had me send the product information, parameters for the space, and other details and gave a conservative estimate. AND, he came by the next day (Saturday). He was prompt (even early) and came with all the necessary tools. The install took no time flat because Norbert had all the questions addressed beforehand! This is critical when charges are by the hour. He saved us at least an hour worth of costs. He came in way under what we thought as a final amount. A final great touch is customer service. He was pleasant, communicative, and consulted with us prior to starting any work. On top of all of this, he even brought a clean pair of shoes to switch into when he walked around. I am impressed by Norbert and his team. It wasn't him that came to our place but his guy Marek. I will admit I had some qualms about this before the job, but walked away extremely satisfied with Marek's work, skill and most important of all, integrity. Ton of people out there that are skilled but quite the opposite when it comes to integrity. We had him working on multiple small jobs -- bathroom tile and grout work, water damage under the kitchen-sink, faucet replacement, etc. And Marek had ideas and in some cases solutions ready for everything. The pre-job communication: this was generally good. There was a minor goof-up. Norbert promised a date, but 3 days before the intended date, for some reason they couldn't make that date. We were upset initially but sh!t happens sometimes so we accepted a new date. This is certainly not a reason enough to give these guys anything less than a 5-star rating. The job: as described above -- an extraordinary experience. Post-job: we were given a clear understanding of all the expenses. I called Chicago Handy to get an estimate for repairing and painting the ceiling in my entryway after replacing the light fixtures. Norbert called back within a few hours and requested pictures so that the job could be accurately estimated. Once those were received, I was provided an estimate that was entirely fair and reasonable. He also offered to pick up the required materials which was one less thing for me to worry about. My job was scheduled for a mutually convenient time about ten days out, which is today. Norbert arrived on time and looked at the job to confirm my expectations. Then he ensured that my floor and wall art were protected, before getting down to business. He worked methodically and when all was said and done I had a perfectly repaired ceiling that looks awesome. The picture doesn't reflect how great it looks. Norbert of Chicago Handy installed a framed mirror above the fireplace in my loft and it looks AWESOME. It was a tricky hanging job because the mirror is huge (about 72" x 36"), heavy (it's framed by metal and wood), and it needed to be hung high up because of the lofted space. In addition to that, the mounting hardware on the mirror was for portrait hanging when I wanted landscape, and the studs in the wall are metal and difficult to screw into. But even with all of those complications Norbert was able to complete the job without any hassle and in a reasonable amount of time. He was friendly, professional, and very flexible with his hours. In a word, terrible service. I had several projects that required handyman services, some very small ($300) and other larger projects costing about $3,000. A perfect order for a handyman service, so I thought. I called the company to request a walkthrough of my projects and was rather bluntly told, "Oh, we don't do that." I said, "what? you don't look at the project requirements and give a customer an estimate?" They replied, "no, we don't, we only give an hourly rate.". I paused, hoping that this simple utterance would sound odd even to the speaker. No luck. I then explained that other handyman services in adjacent neighborhoods provide an estimate and providing estimates is a standard part of handyman services. In fact, Yelp has conveniently built in a link function to help get online quotes from this type of company. When the company was told this, they said robotically , "We don't do that." Incredible. Incredibly bad that is. I told them they won't stay in business with poor service like this. Given the preceding conversation I doubt they heard me. This is an update I had a ceiling fan installed as a matter of fact I had a couple installed, the last time these guys came out to service my house. However instead of him being upset which I would have been, he simply rescheduled less then a week later and came out and fixed the problem with a friendly smile and at No Charge.
