Last night in Paris we returned to Chez Paul after looking for another joint that we couldn't find. Glad we came back. We had something like a pudding polenta for starters, I don't know what is was and our waitress couldn't explain it and I couldn't figure it out but it was good. My g-friend had the andouille sausage and I had a duck leg. Both great. Bottle of Cote de Rhone. Dessert was creme brulee. good food with good service. read more

Wow I almost never write reviews but this is a warning to those who might have read the great reviews and thinking of going... DON'T! You can expect rude service, dirty plates, barely warm rubbery yesterday's left overs and than fork out close to 70 Euros for three without any dessert nor alcohol. Total rip off and we were super disappointed. Worst meal in Paris, hands down! I thought I did my research when I chose this spot. We came here twice on our nine night trip to Paris last month. It's reliably delicious classic French food, though on the second night, the poor waitress was alone covering what must have been fifteen tables. (One table jokingly cheered when she finally gave them menus.) It wasn't her fault that the service suffered, but it really did detract from the meal experience. I had: Two fish and saffron risotto, a plat du jour - the flavours were incredible, the plate was well designed, and the fish and risotto were cooked to perfection. Gratin dauphinois - cheese, cheese, potatoes, cheese, what's not to like? Escargot - pretty standard, but delicious nevertheless. Tarte tatin - like the best apple pie I've ever had, but inside-out and upside-down. I forget what my husband had, but he mostly enjoyed his meals as well. All in all, this is one of the places that I look back on and remember very fondly. read more

I adore this place...it really feels like you are in a movie set. The food is fantastic but the service can be abrupt...but as long as you dish it right back out you'll do fine. You'll fare much better if you speak some French or bring a French speaker with you. read more

We actually had dinner plans so we went in to Chez Paul and decided to get something to hold us over. I opted for dessert before dinner and ordered the Creme Brulee which was delicious and the portion size was larger than I expected. My husband got a salad and the portion was great as well. I will definitely go back to try a real meal from this restaurant next time we are in Paris because they had some authentic french meals. The staff was friendly as well. read more

We just wanted a nice dinner close to our Air B&B, but wow. What a great meal. The gratin dauphinois that came with the steak au poivre was outrageous, as was the perfectly cooked steak itself. Roasted bone marrow with sea salt? Yes, please. It ended up being so good that we went there for dinner twice in four days. Definitely a place that locals like to eat, and I can see why. If I'm ever back in Paris, I will certainly eat here again. read more

I always make the effort to get over to Chez Paul when I go to Paris, mainly because of the peppered steak in brandy - one of the best steaks in the world. Get the gratin dauphinoise to go with it, a few pitchers of house red, and you're sorted! It's very cute, with red and white check tablecloths and napkins, and lots of old memorabilia on the ground floor. If you do book, ask for the dining room upstairs, which is buzzing. read more

One of my favourite spots when I'm back in Paris. The wine selection is excellent, the traditional French food is prepared traditionally (not a given in Paris!), and the service (anytime I have been) is always quick, helpful and friendly. I went here for dinner, and my confit de canard was mediocre if not slightly below. I would actually say the same about the simple table wine I had. My dessert was a chocolate moose cake (caroline), and it was pretty good. I probably would have rated them at 2 stars for dinner, 3-4 for the dessert, but unfortunately the power went out as I was finishing up my dessert. Which was still out when I decided to leave about 30 minutes later after what seemed like a decent amount of chaos. I loved this place the first time I ate there about 4 years ago. Every time I have been back there's been a noticeable erosion of the quality of the food. My fifth and final visit was on 10 October 2012, and the food was barely edible - in fact some things were not edible. The service, which used to have a lot of character but was nonetheless very professional, was just plain bad. Is there a new owner? I hate to give such a bad review to a place I liked so much and I waited a full month to see if reflection would change my reaction. No, it didn't. The dandelion salad was thrown together, looking and tasting like something you'd get at a corporate cafeteria. The rabbit was stringy and tasteless, while the veal was quite simply gnarly, dry, and chewy. Both were served with partially uncooked leeks that were far too large for anything but shredding into soup - but the worst was that they were loaded with gritty dirt, one of the most unpleasant things you could possibly have in your mouth. The profiterolles had mushy ice cream in them. I didn't know soft-serve "ice cream" like that even existed in France! In short, run, don't walk, to any other restaurant - you couldn't find anything worse if you tried. I had a stomach ache later that night - a rarity. read more

This restaurant is a gem! The interior is pre-war by the fact they never remodeled. (Well they added neon lights in the seventies I guess) It even has a (working) crank phone in a corner. The barman looks like a seventies car mechanic and the hostess is a Parisian Roseane Barr. The menu is handwritten in French and has a recent addition from a typewriter (the thing people used before printers in case anyone under 30 wonders) make sure you speak French because that's all they know. The food is excellent and French country cuisine. So things like bone marrow and lamb shoulder are on the menu. The napkins were frayed and had holes but were CLEAN. And that for me sums up this place: if it's good enough to do its job properly, why replace it? Looks? Who cares about looks? It's about food and company! read more

I was very disapointed with my visit. The food did not taste as great as previous rewievs told me it would, my fiance had to send his meat back because he asked for medium rare but god a piece of meat that had almost not even touched the fryingpan, and then he got a lump of coal back. I got a beef, part of the animal not specified, that i had too chew for minutes before i could swallow, and my wine had som kind of dust in it. All and all, we will not come back. read more

I am a simple man. Chez Paul is a simple restaurant. I have not yet had a better meal in Paris than the 3 I have enjoyed at Chez Paul. The fois Gras is amazing, the rabbit with goat cheese and mint sublime. Honestly, this place is consistent, homey, and simple but absolutely first class. My favorite in Paris. A must try. read more

Chez Paul had good ratings and it was really close to where we were staying during our stay in Paris. First of all, the food was great. I have to say that. My wife and I both got French onion soup as starters not knowing how big they were. We probably should have shared because it was huge. It was delicious and I can say nothing bad about it. Our meals came a bit later. My wife got a stew (it was large as well) and I got this peppered steak. We both really liked the tastes of our meals. But I had one issue. The steak I got was really peppery and I'm pretty sure it was intentionally so. Don't get me wrong, it was really good and at the price I was paying I was going to eat all of it (it wasn't that big). I don't mind the peppery-ness of it because it did taste good, but I needed water. Like really bad. I asked the server for more water and he took our pitcher, did not return with it, and continued to do other things. Then he disappeared for literally 15 minutes. I tried getting a hold of him or the runner/busser/aid person but they just zipped by when they did show up in the room again. I understand that they may have been busy and I usually am super patient with service but when you're mouth is on fire 15-30 minutes of trying to get someone's attention is way to long. My wife even told me I looked really uncomfortable and if I needed something. I told her I either really need water (we were both long empty at this point) or I just wanted to pay so I can go back to the Air bnb and drink water there. And of course it took a while to get the waiter's attention to get the check and then for him to come back to charge my card which I had already had my card sitting on the table trying to get his attention that I was ready to pay (along with stacking our dishes and organizing the table-to hopefully get his attention). As I said, none of this got anyone's attention. The food at Chez Paul was "5" awesome. The service on the other hand during our visit was not. read more

Went last night on a rainy Sunday and were immediately asked if we had a reservation. We had not reserved because we were coming back into Paris from Nantes, and had often eaten at Chez Paul during previous trips to Paris. Despite the fact that there were many tables in the warm and busy front of the restaurant, we were ushered into an empty back room like lepers, and ignored while the waitress came back to to procure ice from the freezer and to loudly cut bread for the other diners. After about 15 minutes of perusing the menu which made it clear that a meal for two people with wine would likely cost roughly 120 Euros, we simply got up and left. I speak fluent French because I was partially raised here and have rarely, and I mean rarely, experienced such high-handed or poor treatment which may have had to do with the proprietaire taking one look at the fact my husband was wearing sneakers, or simply may have had to do with nothing. I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

Great, pleasant restaurant. Another reviewer commented that they seat the foreigners in the back room but we were sitting with Parisians as well. We tried to book late for a Saturday night and as much as they tried, they had no space for the two of us, so we reserved for the next day on Sunday. They were happy to see us return, seated us promptly, and provided very attentive table service. Very little English was spoken but the food was tasty, fresh, and appealing. We had the onion soup, the lamb chops and the roasted chicken, both served with lovely pan sauteed potatoes and a vegetable. We had some of the house white wine for a reasonable 7 Euros. I think the entire bill was about 50 Euros. We did not have dessert since we chose to have glace on the walk back to our apartment. The young couple next to us had a stupendous looking chocolate covered crepe with ice cream and whipped cream that was huge. They ate both entire desserts! When we return to Paris, we will return to Chez Pauls. read more

I had the worst experience of any meal, ever, at Chez Paul. I ordered the wild boar, which came with a pile of chestnuts in a gloopy sauce. Everything the same colour piled on my plate. I would not have any objection if it was tasty, but the meat was full of gristle and it was, literally, inedible. Worst meal we've ever had in France and that's a lot of meals. The onion soup was passable but ordinary. My wife and I decided on a dish for two: Noix d'agneau fondante piquée à l'ail, ratatouille et champignons farcis (lamb with garlic, stuffed mushrooms, and easy-to-use). In an amazingly short time a large plate of mostly uncooked tough and grizzly meat was plopped down. Now I love rare lamb but this was an abomination. There was no way we could cut it with the butter knives provided. Even the steak knives provided upon request largely failed the test. The lamb was not really seasoned but there was a handful of raw garlic cloves tossed in. The mushrooms were watery, insipid and probably made last Saturday. The ratatouille was bland. Oh yes! We ordered the Côte du Rhône Village "Cairanne" 2006 Grand Cœur, and it came to us with a Chez Paul vanity label. I have no idea what the vintage or origin was. Is this legal in France? The waitress feigned concern that we were unhappy but offered no concessions and was I am sure happy to see us go. C'est la vie. read more
