This review is for dinner for four on a Saturday night in early February 2022. We had a reservation for 6:30 and we're seated promptly at a corner table on the second floor. Two members of our group had eaten at Chez Loma and recommended the restaurant based on past experiences. Bar: we selected a bottle from the wine list we received when we were seated; however, that wine list was not current and bottle was no longer available. We then received the current wine list and ordered a Pinot Noir. Of note, the markup on wine seems higher than usual, even for a French restaurant on Coronado. One member of our group wanted a beer with his burger, but we couldn't flag down a server to get a beer until halfway through our entrees. Service: our server covered the second floor and perhaps even more of the restaurant. We waited some time to order drinks and food. Our waiter brought two of our entrees, but then there was a significant wait until the busboy brought the final two dishes. During the interval, our server checked on other diners in the room. We waited 15 minutes to receive our check and longer to receive to go boxes. Of note, the to go boxes are plastic cups with lids? We did not receive refills on water or bread. On two occasions, we asked the bus boy or food runner to send our waiter. Food: we started with filet tacos and crab cakes. Both were good. For entrees, my bouillabaisse lacked any garlic or saffron. The mussels tasted off and several were unopened. The fish was over-cooked and the unseasoned broth had large chunks of uncooked tomatoes. The bouillabaisse was served at room temperature. There was no spoon or bread with which to eat the broth. Two of my dining companions had burgers. Both were dry, served on less-than-fresh buns with an unmelted slice of cheese. The fries were good, but there was no ketchup or aioli. The final dish for our group was beef Bourguignon. The dish was OK, but not like any version any of us had ever seen. The dish appeared similar to pot roast with whipped potatoes? There were none of the traditional carrots, mushrooms, or pearl onions. No one asked how our food was or if we wanted dessert or coffee. Details: street parking is always tough on Coronado, allow a little extra time. Reservations seem like a good idea, at least for a Saturday night. The second floor restroom needs renovated or thoroughly cleaned. I spoke to our server as we were leaving and explained that we recognize waitstaff and supply chain issues during the pandemic, but that we were generally disappointed by our experience. read more

We are very sad to leave a poor review, as we have been coming since 2001 when Ken Irvine owned it. He was a brilliant chef. We really miss his signature gingerbread. There was a change of management in between where it was bad. We retried it a couple years later and we had a fantastic meal. We thought were safe tonight. When we arrived we were immediately cold. Everyone in there it was wearing the jacket they walked in. This telegraphs that they were too cheap to turn on the heater on January 2. Our companion had the onion soup which was mediocre with a small amount of cheese on it. I had a beet salad which was fine but nothing special like previously. And my husband had the escargot which is a standard for him. The escargot was not fresh, it likely came out of a can but it turned out to be OK. Our first clue was when we asked the server and he said the coq au vin and the Beef Bourguignon were done in the same sauce. We both cook so we know what goes in all of these dishes but it are wine based so it's possible it could turn out all right. Both were tasteless. This is not the point of an elegant French dining experience. This really grievous part of this was that my husband's stock beef is strained out, what he thinks he should throw out, after it's been simmered and most of the flavor was extracted it still had more taste than this dish. Companions filet was fine and cooked right. It was however a very dainty portion as was was ours. Desert choice was flourless chocolate cake. It tasted fine but it was way too large of a piece, which was certainly not the case with our entrées. Presentation was a block instead of a slice with a little whipped cream and a few pieces of sliced strawberry. It was served way too cold, this means you can barely get through it with a spoon. Temperature is an important component of the dining experience. Whipped cream or berries or creme anglaise needed to be in the correct proportion to offset the richness of the desert. In this case it was way off kilter. And let me tell you, we love rich, smooth textures and chocolatey, so it's so hard for us to even say somethings too rich and chocolatey. It just needed balance. If you're in an elegant French restaurant, you are expecting an exquisite experience on your palate. You are just hoping your eyes might roll backwards and your toes curl. Also, it was $350 with wine. Considering the proportion served and the quality it was grossly over priced The menu looks and tasted like it was prepared by a person who read the book French cooking for dummies. I hope this review spurs the owners to explore the restaurant's roots and to restore it to its former glory. read more

I worked with the team at Chez Loma for an important large business dinner for key executives in my company. They knocked it out of the park! Craft cocktails were amazing to start the evening. The setting was ideal for the group to mingle and talk. The duck tacos and escargot had the crowd at the first bite. Dinner was perfect. Wine pairings great. Chez Loma was excellent. We were a party of 4, 3 of us self-described "foodies." The appetizers--clams in a saffron sauce and french onion soup--excellent. We had three main courses, Cowboy Rib Eye Steak, Chicken Millanaise and Duck L'Orange--all great. Only two nominal criticisms: #1 the waiter took our drink order quite quickly but was a tad slow in returning to take our food order--and it was just a tad so no big deal. #2 The chocolatte mousse--I'm not a chocolate person but the others are and they said just ok, at best. (I had a Vanilla cake that was great.) I had read a few negative reviews, mostly from mid 2022, that worried me. Most indicated that the restroom was dirty and poorly kept (and restroom cleanliness often is indicative of kitchen cleanliness so I was concerned). Once we had our table I went to investigate. It was spic and span, no problem whatsoever. Some had mentioned that the paint & upholstery were somewhat worn and I would agree with that--but that really is not the type of stuff that phases me. All in all, this restaurant was great and we will certainly return next time we are in Coronado. read more

This past week, my company hosted a happy hour at Chez Loma. During planning, there was a mix-up with dates. The morning of, I called Diego and despite such short notice, he and his team managed to pull together a gorgeous happy hour the day of in only six hours! What started out as an impossibly stressful situation was quickly put at ease and back on track thanks to their incredibly kind and accommodating staff. Truly saved the day! They were able to meet all of our needs and expectations and then some. The space itself maintains an inviting and quaint old-world charm that is rare to find these days. Chez Loma is true treasure. We rented out the full upstairs for our event. The staff was incredibly accommodating, and detail oriented with the set up and preparation for our event. The food and drinks were fantastic as well. We received rave reviews from our attendees--the sliders were an especially big hit. It was an upscale and delicious take on a classic. Couldn't recommend Chez Loma enough! If you're looking for a great place to host your next event or just to have a lovely night out, Chez Loma is guaranteed to be a wonderful experience. We'll definitely be back. read more

Disappointing I wanted to like Chez Loma But I can't. Cute restaurant in an old house and you sit in rooms, cool. The wait staff was great very attentive. The food, I tried the carb cakes, good not the best I have had, but good. My gal had a salad arugula and large tomato's with vinaigrette dressing not large $16.00. My gal had filet mignon $49 and I had scallops. The scallops were small and dry, not good. The filet mignon was warm not hot but the plate was hot they warned us. Oh! It's been sitting, ok. I kinda know wine and I never heard of any they offer by the glass. Mine was $7.00 bottle on wines.com, but $13.00 glass here, it tasted like $7.00 bottle. Sorry just not that good for just under $200 for dinner for 2. read more

We went for my son's graduation from college. Half our party ordered the steaks and all at different degrees of wellness and they all finished every bite! Which means they were excellent. The other half the seafood and again, empty plates. There were 7 of us. I had the salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus. Very good! The waiter was very attentive and the ambiance was perfect. Chez was open for outdoor dining, but we got rained on and had to go inside. I ordered Filet Mignon, but there was none, so I had to order the steak frites. They arrived soon enough, but I was somewhat disappointed at the size of the serving. There was just a handful of fries, and a smattering of sliced steak. It looked like carne asada or skirt steak. Hardly impressive in my opinion. Other things wrong tonight: no beer on tap, just 2 kinds of bottles, cold creme brulet, and young employees who appeared to be confused about how to operate a fine restaurant. read more

This place has a beautiful atmosphere. It is very inviting, small and unique. We had brunch here about 3 years ago and was very impressed so we decided to try it for dinner. The outside and bar setting is very inviting but when making reservations they said none were available so we chose inside. Still a very pleasant dinning area, but while we were there their outside tables were never occupied and only one table used in the bar area. The food was very good, we had oysters, shrimp and the fish special all well prepared. We also had a couple of glasses of a French Chardonnay. Dinner was nice but I felt over priced for what you received. Not sure I would hurry back for dinner but would consider brunch again. read more

We went for a belated Anniversary dinner and was not disappointed with the atmosphere of candlelight, nice Christmas music, sumptuous food, and friendly staff. My lobster bisque was wonderful! The warm sourdough rolls on the table were yummy, and nice and hot. My husband really enjoyed his filet mignon, (although he had originally ordered the ribeye but their meat order hadn't come in). My scallops were very large, cooked just right, plump and tender. There was a little too much finishing of sea salt on them for my taste, but when mixed with the risotto, it was just fine. Our server, Sabrina, was very pleasant. She took our picture for us, brought us a complimentary dessert and was just lovely throughout our experience. We will definitely be returning when in town for the weekend. I recommend making reservations, as we did, because it does fill up quickly. read more

For decades Chez Loma has been a special occasion restaurant for us, but no more. A 90-year-old friend asked me to pick an eatery to celebrate my birthday and I picked Chez Loma because the Early Bird menu was something I knew she could afford. The first disappointment came when we arrived and were told that we would have to climb a relatively steep staircase to reach our table as the entire first floor had been rented out to a single party. At her age, and still recovering from a recent hip surgery, this presented a huge challenge for our friend. The second disappointment came when we were given our menus and discovered that they haven't served the Early Bird "in years". Apparently they've "never gotten around to updating their website". Really? The service was mediocre and the food delicious, but the noise level made conversation quite a challenge. The frosting on the cake was when the waiter plopped down an unexceptional creme brulee and three spoons in the middle of our table without a candle, without even a "happy birthday" or a smile. Although we tried to make the best of it, everything about our experience was disappointing and subpar...and certainly not worth the big bucks. Love crossing the bridge to dine in charming Coronado, but have crossed Chez Loma off our list of favorites. read more

This spot disappointed despite the ambiance. The steak I ordered was tough, thank goodness they brought me a steak knife because there was no way my butter knife was cutting it if you know what I mean. My husband's fish was served perfectly cooked, crisp on the outside not over dine inside however it was so over seasoned, (salty) it ruined the dish. Service was slow and lacking. Waitstaff congregated inside around the bar. The duck tacos were the highlight of our meal we tried quite a few things and those were the best of the bunch by far. Cocktails were lackluster, no ginger beer. Settled on lemon drops which they served quite tart and without a sugar rim. No kids menu, the server said because it's "French inspired", so I guess the French kids eat off the adult menu? With so many great restaurants with excellent service surrounding this one I wouldn't return. read more

Went for breakfast on August 16, 2020. Only two tables occupied and it took 90 minutes to get my order. My daughter got her order after 60 minutes. The food was cold and not good at all. I had the french toast: no flavor, not good at all. My daughter had avocado toast: not very good. My wife had hamburger: Not good at all. My son had a Montecristo sandwich: burnt on the bottom, cold, not good at all. My Mom had an omelette: not good and cold as well. It was only our table and another table. The waitress indicated that they were having issues with the kitchen help! Horrible experience. Too bad, the place is really nice. read more

My wife was very excited to take me here for my 30th birthday dinner. She had been communicating with the chef Lori who had boasted that she would make the evening really special for us. The menu she shared with my wife had all my favorite French foods on it and we were to have a special table made for us. When we arrived we were seated at an unprepared table. There was zero indication that they expecting us. The menu did not have any of the items we were promised. Lori did not come out and say hi. The staff all seemed like high school students who didn't care about anything but getting off for the night. There was no music. The kitchen staff was listening to Cardi B very loudly and you could hear them gossiping. We put on French music on my cellphone. The crab cakes were delicious but everything else we ordered was very underwhelming. I had been here for lunch with a girlfriend 8 or so years ago and had a great experience. This simply was not up to standard for a nice dinner out, let alone a milestone birthday. read more

When we ordered white wine two is the glasses had white floaties inside that couldn't be explained. Upon further inspection we found a food or soap film coating the glass. We walked out. Wow, just wow. What an amazing immersive experience! The food was top notch, but even more notable was the outstanding service. Our server / bartender was Arman, who would get TEN stars if I could! He was so knowledgeable about the menu and is a professional mixologist that made FANTASTIC drinks. His margarita recipe and espresso martini were out of this world. The night started off so well - nice outdoor seating, they checked our temperature before going in, menu sounded good - everything seemed so promising. However, we ordered glasses of wine which turned out mediocre (not a great wine list by the glass). In about 20 min, the waitress said the food was coming out shortly. 10 min later we asked about our food, still just coming out. Finally, after being there for over an hour - with no food but bread - we gave up and decided to leave. They at least did not charge us for the drinks (hence 2 stars instead of 1). read more
