Randomly came across Chez Alex with my friend. We got a black coffee, chai latte, chorizo bowl and the seitan rising. Cute seating areas but it was full when we got there, so we sat outside. Did not hear when our orders were done though. However, the staff was very friendly and they carried out one of our orders to us. Black coffee was black coffee - nice, safe, smooth. Chai latte tasted like water. The chorizo bowl was pretty good but note that it has a healthy scoop of jalapeños. I think I'd prefer if there was more soyrizo and maybe even more rice. Cute little vegan hole in the wall. I stopped here just to pick up desserts for a house guest and what do you know they had a plentiful supply of vegan options. Very cute place with a steady stream of people from the neighborhood coming in to get a Sunday fix for dessert. Seems like it's a great coffee shop as well. I remember doing a bit of research before coming to Brooklyn about places near our Airbnb. I stumbled upon Chex Alex because it offered cheap and vegetarian options. I saw pictures and other reviews and decided we should go here for breakfast. My friends agreed and we left without any regrets. My friend and I ordered the Piper, which is like a turkey and cheese sandwich with arugula and a surprising but enjoyable mix of green apple slices and dijon mustard. I absolutely loved the Piper, so much I came back the next day and ordered another one. The interior is nicely decorated and looks bougie but hip. It's nicely air conditioned and the music gives it a relaxing, chill vibe which can be appreciated by people who want to get some work done or potential date. There's a bathroom in the back right side as well as a short pile of books next to the couch. This has been one of the best places I've been to on my trip. read more

This is what I'd consider a "dive cafe" it has all the makings of a cafe (seats, decor, coffee), but it also reminds me of a reality show. The servers are really nice but the drinks vary so much in consistEncy (in terms of taste) that I always opt for a small sized coffee when I do come. However, the food is amazing! The vegan and non vegan treats are made right in the back! Additionally, it's VERY loud! From the employees literally yelling, cursing, and joking to the "unique" (for lack of a nicer word) music blaring. They play anything from death metal to show tunes to satirical remixes of pop songs. Sometimes it's just too much. It gets so cold in here. The AC is always on so bring a jacket! Overall, I'll still return but won't expect any frills. read more

This place is cute and has a piano so sometimes you will hear nice piano music BUT THEY DO NOT RECYCLE!!!!!!! It's so annoying that they don't care enough to recycle the hundreds of coffee cups they use a day. Even if you're having your coffee to stay or just want a cup of water they usually just give you the same disposable cups and then only have a trash bin, no recycling. Especially for a fancy vegan place you would expect them to be more sustainable!! Please get your shit together in this aspect, thank you kindly. On my first visit it was a very hot day in Brooklyn, I was biking in need of some some AC, a beverage and to charge my phone. I ended up getting there house-made kombucha which was good and in sold in Mason jar. I drank my Kombucha and it was nice and cool inside but I couldn't charge my phone because there was only one outlet and it was in use. Of course. On visit #2 which was this past Friday.... I made a detour there to get sandwich on another hot day in Brooklyn. I read that that the "crazy eyes" sandwich was the best vegan sandwich in Brooklyn.... somebody definitely lied! Long wait due to them baking bread... the sandwich was messy and the kale was very very spicy. The sandwich consisted of cauliflower, kale, mayo, cheez sauce and hot peppers. Which I subbed for tomatoes and added fried onions. Which I paid extra for and didn't see on my mess of a sandwich I waited 30 minutes for. It was one of the worst sandwiches I've ever had. This sandwich was probably the worst sandwich I ever had. The one star was for the sandwich. If I'm ever in the neighborhood I'll stop in maybe for coffee and try there baked goods they offer a lot of vegan options. Which I appreciated. read more

I have given Chez Alex many more chances and have not been disappointed since. If you read my reviews I'm a mom and if you can win both my little ones over you've basically got me. They love going inside there used to be a little toy carousel in the glass display that my son loved looking at. The front display has since changed but they love to go in and say hi to Alex even if we can't stop to buy anything. Chocolate Chip Cookies: huge, moist, gooey a favorite amongst us all Bacon, Egg and cheese on croissant: huge (big enough to seriously split with someone) so delicious and it's a yummy sharp cheddar cheese with the buttery toasty croissant. Just get it! Ham and Swiss croissant: delicious but sometimes kind of hit or miss. I've had some that just oozed cheese and stuffed with ham and some that were mainly croissant. The Piper: turkey, cheddar with slices of tart Granny Smith apples....DELISH!!! GoldieLox: my favorite thing here!!!! It's a perfect pairing the lox, boiled egg . My only complaint is the bread used I believe it's ciabatta I always have a tough time with that bread. It's still my favorite despite that! I am very glad I continued to come here. Dude, the Scully though!? This place is a vegan-friendly gem that not enough vegans know about, I'll tell ya that much! The staff always remembers my name and what I like to order, and is really friendly each time I come in. The cookies are only $1.50 which is unreal considering how amazing they are, they serve the absolute best scones I've ever had in my life, vegan or non, and pretty much every sandwich is reasonably priced too (please don't hike up the prices, please don't hike up the prices). Thanks to Yelp reviews, I finally got around to trying their chocolate cake, and yea, you guys were right, it's all of that. So much love for the Chez Alex fam. I can only speak for the vegan options when I say their food is outstanding! The vegan chocolate chip cookies are out of this world as are all of the baked goods. HoW dO tHeY mAkE thOsE teXtuReS??? The cakes and pastries are perfectly fluffy or crispy (depending on what it is) and the sandwiches are filling & flavorful. The only downside to the sandwiches is that the bread is super gluten-y -- too much leaves me with a knot in my stomach. I have been to Chez Alex multiple times over the past 2-3 years and have always left satisfied. The 'crazy eyes' is my favorite vegan sandwich, but I will note that they changed the cheese about a year ago and it is not as good as the original sandwich. The chai tea is a house recipe and tasty af. The lemonade options are great too. I've tried the broccoli quiche (yum) and the chocolate cake, which was also tasty. I will say that within the past year it's become more 'hipster' depending on who is working... meaning playing loud music to the point that you can't focus if you have your laptop. It's a cafe, not a party. The owners are amazing though, they are always nice and it's a joy to see them. read more

I ended up getting the Piper sandwich (turkey, cheddar, arugula, and green apple, $7), a banana-caramel cake thing (I think, not entirely sure, but I do know that it was suuuuuuper moist as if it was just made a minute before I walked in - I was super surprised and not expecting it to be that fresh and yummy, $2.50) and a carrot cake (which I haven't eaten yet but have good hopes for it!, $2.50). After hearing so much about the Chez Alex Vegan Chocolate Cake and actually trying it at a local Bed-Stuy Restaurant I made it my mission to come try the actual store for myself. Yes walking in the staff greeted me with a warm good morning and all went downhill from there. My friend and I were waiting to order, we were second in line so of course naturally we'd be next. The employee asked us what we want and then without confirming or asking for payment just totally skipped us and served the person behind us. I found that so rude, I wanted to walk out right then but I really needed that cake fix! So I ask him for a few slices as we wanted to bring some back to the office and his response, "no, we need to save some for the regulars" nevermind the fact that the friend I was with IS A REGULAR who lives right across the street. As the other reviews have mentioned the customer service is so bad it felt like maybe I was on candid camera (being punked for those under a certain age). Anyway I have walked in three times, walked out twice--due to rudeness of both the man and the woman--and once broke down and tried the coffee. I love this place. The vegan items are delicious and I am not vegan. I love the cookie cups (I even daydream about them). The coffee is delicious. The Americano's are made to perfection...just the right amount of water and expresso. However, what I love most is the happy hour cookie special. Yes, people...there is a HAPPY HOUR/after school special!! There are a lot of schools in the neighborhood. So school age kids can actually drop in and afford an after-school snack that is made with good natural ingredients instead of just going to the bodega for the processed junk. I have lived in Bed Stuy for over 15 years and I often see kid and adults walk by the new businesses not feeling like the space is for them too. Well...offering dollar cookies creates access! Affordability gets people in the door. It changes perception.
