A new wave of flavor just hit @pacific.beach @cherryfishsd creations by Chef Marcus blends refined technique with fresh coastal style. The menu features miso soup, swordfish skewers, kimchi flatbread, beef tenderloin, spiny lobster, lychee crème brûlée with strawberry miso, and matcha affogato with sesame ice cream. It's the kind of place you visit once and immediately plan your return.

We started off with drinks and not going to lie my drink was horrible lol i got the shishito because i wanted the smoke bubble on top i saw in pictures. It looked cool but was hard to get down. That being said it doesn't change my rating because the food blew it out of the park. The crispy tuna was hands-down the best I've ever had. Then came the kanpachi sashimi, the fish was incredibly fresh and melted in your mouth, i think about this dish regularly. We also did the uni and wagyu fried rice, both insanely good. Service was great and i liked the moody lighting and cherry blossom decor.

Ambience (5/5): I came here with a friend after hearing it recently open, and the overall aesthetic was really great. I think this is probably the crowning point of the restaurant. Service (3/5): I think it was fine, our server was a bit odd. We asked about the menu for recommendations but we didn't really get anything concrete in return. It sorta felt like they didn't know the menu well.. Food (3/5): We ordered a good number of items off the menu to try things out, and most of the items were lackluster than that excellent. I think the fantastic items included the Sashimi Kanpachi and the Swordfish. Both of these were very flavorful and great. We couldn't help but notice though that the quality of the dishes varied a little bit between our table and other tables--which is what leads me to remove a star. The other items we got were: (+ positive) Shishito great (+ positive) the Spicy Tuna dish, which was good; (= neutral) the Spicy lobster roll, which was fine but was a bit heavy on the mayo; (- negative) the Toro roll, which was fine but there was so much daikon in the roll, it destroyed the overall taste and texture of the roll itself; (-- very negative) the Salad, which is very, very small, very salty and lackluster for about $15. (- negative) the Lychee Creme Brulee, which was good but it was very sweet and hard to finish by the end. It felt more like a pudding to be honest. Overall, the aesthetic of the place is the highlight of the restaurant; but I do hope that this place can continue to grow in quality control of its dishes. I think many items swung too far into their flavor profiles that could use some more moderation.

Cherryfish has opened where a longtime cantina followed by a short-lived wagyu restaurant used to be in the PB neighborhood. One of the owners also operates the cafe right next door on the corner of the street. During my visit, the outdoor front patio wasn't fully set up yet. The dining area layout didn't change much with a bar in the back right of the room. A central countertop and multiple small tables provided the rest of the seating capacity. The interior of this place has always been intricately decorated, and the revamp was no exception. There was plenty of hanging greenery, and the wall murals were creative. The grand opening was late last week in the middle of the rainstorms that hit the SD area. Because of the precipitation, the opening night crowd was likely much less than anticipated. I was able to snag an empty spot at the bar that could seat about 10 people. The menu concept was Japanese fusion with about half of the offerings split between appetizers and shareable small plates. Sushi, sides, large plates, and skewers cooked over charcoal made up the rest of the categories. I initially ordered the Swordfish Belly Skewers and Spicy Lobster Rolls which were two of the ten 'Share' choices. Perhaps it was the day one jitters, but the kitchen was very slow in preparing my food. It couldn't have been due to a large volume of orders because the dining area was not even half full. I think the staff noticed the long wait and offered a complimentary dish of Shishito Peppers to pass the time. The peppers were blistered nicely, however I only ate a few as I wasn't a fan of the texture. After half an hour, the two dishes were brought out. The skewers came as a pair, and each had a tranche of grilled swordfish belly. Tangerine, mizuna, and beet char siu were the other ingredients that decorated the plate. The fish was cooked well while the tangerine's fruitiness provided a refreshing citrus contrast. The rolls came as a duo on sesame brioche buns. Instead of New England lobster as the seafood filling, local spiny lobster was used as the protein. Yuzu tartar and crispy leeks were the toppings. The tartar was heavy and obscured the meat. I would've preferred less dressing to be used. I still had an appetite after consuming these items so I ordered the Snow Crab Handrolls to finish my meal. Again, it took quite a long time for the food to be prepared. The two rolls were wrapped in sesame leaf with avocado, cucumber sunomono, kimchi mayo, and smoked trout roe as the accompaniments. The last component was quite noticeable as the salty trout eggs added a smoky flavor to enhance the crab meat. Pricewise, the cost was a bit expensive for the portion size, but I have experienced worse at similar upscale Asian restaurants. The bartenders who served me were very pleasant and apologetic for the waiting time. For their service along with the quality of the food, I rounded the rating of my dinner at Cherryfish to a four star level.

Coconut mocktail and white sangria

Came here the other night with a big group. We sat inside, the space has a lot of room for tables and pretty decorations. Our server Paige was friendly and attentive and took good care of our large group. I had white sangria which was a refreshing drink. The cocktails look interesting but they don't seem to have a full liquor license yet so only beer, wine and sake based drinks. I ordered the Kanpachi Sashimi which was a small share plate and I thought it tasted great! A good amount of fish for the price and a really interesting flavor. Miso soup is unique and delicious and the edamame is great!

A big group of us went last night and I have nothing but excellent things to say about it. Food, service, ambiance 10/10 The food quality and taste is on par with what you would get at a Michelin star restaurant. Space inside is chic and beautiful, very warm and trendy. Staff was very friendly and attentive Happy to see a place of this caliber open in PB

Cherryfish delivers an outstanding dining experience that goes beyond just great food. The ambience is vibrant yet relaxed, creating a space that feels perfect for both casual outings and special occasions. The aesthetics are modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed, making the restaurant visually appealing and comfortable to spend time in. The wait staff deserves special recognition. They were professional, attentive, and genuinely caring. Service is smooth and well-paced, adding to the overall relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. The food is exceptional across the board. Every bite feels intentional, flavorful, and beautifully presented. It's clear that a lot of care went into both the menu and execution. Overall, Cherryfish offers a well-rounded experience where atmosphere, service, and food come together effortlessly. It's an impressive debut and a restaurant that will definitely become a favorite.

The first thing I want to say about this restaurant is that it's beautifully appointed and pretty inside. Great ambiance. I had to pay $20 to make a reservation in advance, but went ahead with that because it was opening night and we were celebrating my husband's birthday. It said that fee would be applied to the final bill, so I wasn't too worried about it. We arrived for our 6pm reservation, and the restaurant was still pretty empty. When I called they let me know they had happy hour from 5 - 7 pm, but once we arrived was told happy hour was only at the bar. Since we had our teen kids with us, sitting at the bar wasn't an option. I think they sensed our disappointment and they offered to honor the happy pricing for us. Very nice, we were grateful for that. Something to be aware of though, if you are expecting happy hour in the dining area. It took forever for the food to start coming out, not sure why since the place was still pretty empty. But once it did, we quickly realized that the portion sizes were super small and was not going to satisfy a table of 4 people. For how expensive everything was, I was expecting larger shareable portions from the shares menu. I think this place is more for couples/date night and not families. Since they are brand new, we had no reference pictures anywhere to understand how much we would get with each item ordered. We had the edamame (great! But they forgot to put it in and it came out last), butterfly sushi roll, which was underwhelming, lobster rolls which they said would be 4 pieces but came out as 2, shishito peppers (fantastic but watch out for the red ones, super hot) swordfish skewers (good but dry/overcooked), wagyu fried rice (tasty but had negligible wagyu) and the sake grenades flight (favorite was the strawberry one). Also had beer (hubby) and rose wine. They brought us two free desserts to make up for the hiccups, the cheesecake (more like a sponge cake honestly), and a lychee crème brûlée which was delicious and we really enjoyed. However, after reviewing the receipt, it looks like they didn't end up honoring the happy hour pricing, and they didn't apply the $20 reservation fee. It cost $14 for 2 diet cokes, which... really? Walked out of there with a large bill and everyone still super hungry. We would have ordered more food, but did not think the portions were worth it. I'd say this is a cute spot for date night appetizers and cocktails, but not for family dining where you hope to have enough to eat, unless you are used to $350+ night outs for dinner. I really wanted to love this place, but I regret not picking somewhere else for hubby's birthday celebration. Seems you're paying super premium prices for cute decor.

Akami Roll, Butterfly Roll, Spiny Lobster Roll
Brittany K.

Drinks were 5/5! They were unique, fun and yummy! Food was probably a 3.5/5. The edamame was flavorful and spicy and the perfect thing to snack on. The rolls however overwhelmingly tasted like the vegetables instead of the fish in them. For $30 a roll, I want the fish to be the main attraction. Better off trying just nigiri or saving the rolls for happy hour. Cute outdoor patio space!

Emily S.

The ambience was lovely and our waiter was very attentive and friendly. Well, the food was okay - it didn't wow us and we did not feel it was worth the steep prices for the small portions. The tartare lacked flavor and we could tell wasn't the best quality. The lobster was flavorful, but the sauces that it came with never came out and we had to tell our waiter. The butterfly roll had great flavor as well, but for almost $20 it only had cucumber inside and a thin piece of eel. Overall, Cherryfish was great in terms of ambience and service, but for the price of the food and what we got we wouldn't come back.

Emma R.

Cherry Fish is exactly what PB needed - super creative cocktails, a funky vibe, and insanely good food. The toro and yellowtail roll were my absolute favorites, so fresh and flavorful. The wagyu fried rice blew my mind too, especially with that ramen-style soft-poached egg on top (never seen that before!). Our group also loved the kimchi pizza - the dough is actually made with kimchi, which is such a fun twist. The chef came out to chat with us each time we were there and you can tell he puts so much thought and care into everything. He said brunch is coming soon, and I'm already excited. Finally, a high-quality sushi spot in PB with a legit vibe.

Akami Roll + Lychee?
Baran K.

I'm going to chalk it up to the new opening that the service was not great. Immediately upon ordering drinks they informed me that the Shishito would come with no foam due to malfunctions of the foam machine. They were also out of the gyoza. We were constantly missing utensils or napkins and halfway through our meal the lamp on the table ran out of battery. This would be no problem had the restaurant been busy but there really weren't a ton of people there. The food and pricing was also upsetting. We got the Akami roll given how appetizing it seemed from the menu only to find that it is a cucumber roll with a thin slice of tuna on top... for $28... diabolical. The shishito peppers and spicy tuna crispy rice was very good, I would say the wagyu fried rice was decent, but cooking a wagyu takes skill and this was overcooked. I did like the snowcrab handroll... thought it was a refreshing bite. Overall though, our meal + one drink each for 3 ppl felt very overpriced considering that the food is decent, nothing really special, the portions aren't substantial and, again the "pricier" items like meats came in small portions on the dishes.

We went there for my daughter's bday on a Tuesday and it was packed! So glad we made a reservation! It's a new restaurant off Cass St and the ambiance and food were awesome. The kids had a non alcoholic Ube drink that was delicious and the Wagyu fried rice and the lobster gyoza - chef's kiss . Totally recommend!

Although this was my favorite, all the other nigiris were also amazing as expected from a quality omakase place. Service was quick and friendly. Our server checked on us quite often. We had a bento box, Himitsu roll (which was fishy), the sushi lover set and the soft shell crab appetizer. The soft shell crab was the best thing there but I could not even finish half of my sushi due to how rubbery and inedible the rest of sushi was. The rice also fell apart immediately prior to picking it up with my chopsticks. I tried to just eat the sashimi without the rice to not waste food but we couldn't. The Bento box included salad that wasn't cleaned properly and included sausages and a very small amount of fish as the main course. There were also bones in a lot of the fish & eel nigiri (which I haven't experienced before) When asked how things tasted I mentioned that the sushi was rubbery and I couldn't finish the rest. She offered me to take it home which I politely declined. We were then charged a 20% service fee bundled in as a tip and this was not disclosed when we initially sat down. This was not only one of the most expensive lunches but my mom & I ended up getting sick later on that night and should have left halfway through the meal. Needless to say we will not be returning. We had hoped they would offer some sort of price break or an exchange for something else but it was such a horrible experience we just wanted to leave. Such a slimey way to do business and not disclosing a mandatory service fee.

A nice touch if you enjoy a little pre-dinner social hour. Somewhere between scanning the menu and spotting all the seafood options, dessert quietly exited the chat. We decided to lean into the moment and see what the hype was about. After a quick chat with our waiter, we went with the octopus skewer and grilled swordfish. Now, fun fact I completely missed: it's a gin bar. This realization came after I confidently ordered a dirty martini like I knew what I was doing so I pivoted and reordered a glass of wine. Smooth recovery... mostly. The octopus was nicely cooked tender with a good char and the swordfish was... fine. Not bad, just not something I'll be dreaming about at 2 a.m. Overall, the dishes were executed well, but flavor-wise, they could've used a little more personality. A pinch of salt might've gone a long way. That said, I know their menu changes frequently, so I'd absolutely come back and give it another shot. We sat at the bar and the gentleman that served us was friendly, attentive, and welcoming from the moment we sat down. The place itself was very clean and had a really nice atmosphere. The food was delicious, especially the patatas bravas, which were flavorful and perfectly cooked. I also tried both types of sangria, and they were delicious....refreshing, well-balanced, and definitely worth ordering again! Overall, it was a fantastic meal from start to finish. We're already looking forward to coming back and trying more of the menu! I MUST try the paella next time!!!!

Great food, great service. Because of its location, parking can be tough. I met a guy for a…read morebusiness mtg and brought my son. Why -2 star has been a debate in my head ever since that day. Everything started great, they even had my favorite beer Schmidtwick's. The food was delish and presented well. Our server was attentive and kind. The place was neat and clean, great for a mtg... The general manager came over and chitchatted with our table. I was the one who called the meeting, I chose the place via Yelp reviews. However, when the GM found out it was all three of our first time he proceeded to hand out his card. The guy that met me there was handed one, then my son who lives in Irvine was handed one. However, when I reached my hand out, he hesitated. I told him we don't live together (speaking of my son who was sitting next to me) and he started to hand it to me, but then pulled it back. He informed me it's in case we come back... funny, our topic of conversation that day was how hard it was for women growing up in my era and working their way up the ladder... how times have changed. Upon leaving, my guest laughed and said his wife would've gone ballistic at how the only woman at the table was treated. The GM appeared to look like we were the same age. I was quite insulted by his behavior. I hope something can be learned for my honest review. I did get a card, but I don't think I'll be back.

Our server was so friendly and brought out menus quickly since it was self seating. The outside seating was the perfect spot for some people watching and generally enjoying the weather. Now in terms of the food.. we enjoyed the little pickle platter. Unfortunately it came out much earlier than the rolls and we were quite hungry so we ate most of them before our rolls came out. They would have been great pairings with the rolls themselves. The kabocha squash roll was so unique and surprisingly tasty. A sweeter creamier roll for sure. The salmon skin roll was a nice savory balance to the squash roll. I'd have to say the salmon skin roll was my favorite. We'll definitely be back to try some of the other rolls!

And this review is after that experience, so we can compare and contrast things like pricing and quality. When you come here you must bring a loaded wallet. To try a sour beer or any of their Russian River beers, (which was a surprise to us that there even was beer coming out of Russian River, a place I love for wine) .... is $19 for a bottle. And if you've never tried a sour beer and no one likes it, there are no returns. You pay your money and you take your chances. They are creative at The Joint. I mean an eel roll with macadamia nuts is a brilliant twist on sushi. The second thing we try is their soft shell crab roll. Delicious. Everyone at the table 'seconds' these comments. I ask someone on the way in, seated at a table eating sushi if it is good. He says: "I'll let you know". Later, he comes back to our table to let me yes! It's really good". So is this a good place to go for Sushi? The answer is yes. Is it a little confusing as an asian fusion place to have so many diverse choices? The answer is yes, but I also admit I do like all the options. Again, they call their Happy Hour food 'Tapas'. Is that Spanish, or is it just me? Japanese fried chicken or an arugula salad or oysters? lol Your taste buds must travel all over the place and that's hard on the palate and my headspace of 'what am I eating'? Is it overpriced? The answer is yes! And if I'm being honest, it surprises me that no one else on yelp is mentioning this. If money is not an issue and you want good sushi, our group recommends trying The Joint. Just don't count on happy hour having happy prices. $4 for an oyster is not happy! It's regular priced. Maybe even over priced for a happy hour menu where oysters come in at $1 and $2 for happy hour. And today, they are all out of oysters. lol We usually just tell you what to order when you go to a restaurant. This is the first time we have felt the need to let you know what you're in for, price wise. Sorry to the wonderful staff and great chef. No idea why they need to represent themselves as 'happy hour noon - 6pm every day', leading me to believe there is good pricing. But it's not my zoo, not my monkeys.
