We found this way after taking a night walk around La Jolla. They did not have dedicated parking but there tends to be enough people coming and going that you can usually find a spot somewhere close. The street with a few restaurants is closed off at least at night. We have come here a few times. We had the Crunch Shrimp Roll (amazing), the Salmon Avocado Roll (small for the price) and the Miso Cream Udon with Shrimp and Scallops (worth the trip). We also, after the first time, ordered a side of white rice. It is a pro move. After you finish the Miso Cream Udon add the rice and it will soak up all of the goodness. Do Not Leave Any Cream Behind. They were busy so it took a bit for them to take our order but we weren't in a hurry. There is cool art on the wall and one made of cut wood blocks that may just be held together by gravity. I was very tempted to remove a block but I don't want to get banned from this place as we want to come back : ) read more

This restaurant was one of several just steps away from our hotel, and it had a very impressive exterior, with its all-grass hedges (if that's what you call it?) instead of the usual. However, I noticed that its ratings were much lower than others on this street. Still, we decided to check it out... For some reason, we decided to order the same thing...the Chicken Katsu Bento. In addition, we ordered a side of Shrimp Tempura. Their Shrimp Tempura was really good...and generous in size. However, the Bento was very underwhelming. It even came off as an Americanized version...in that it completely lacked any Japanese sides like most Bento Boxes. It only had a huge portion of a salad with Japanese sauce. It didn't even have any Spring Rolls. Just the Katsu, a few Tempura pieces, and Rice that seemed at least a day old. Katsu and Tempura tasted good, but the rest of the items in the Bento was just bad. Then the worst part? Their Miso Soup was totally bland. In fact, mine was a totally clear broth with ZERO flavor! I added a ton of Soy Sauce to make up for it, and still tasted horrible. I hated to do it, but mentioned this to the waitress, and she brought out another cup of Miso Soup...and it, too, was terrible. WAY too clear and tasteless. At this point, I understood just why the ratings were so low here. Of all the restaurants I've been to in San Diego, this had to be the worst. It's a pity for such a beautiful looking restaurant (at least on the outside...inside was much more casual-usual) to have such sub-standard foods and portions. Located a few minutes walk from La Jolla Shores, Sushi Mori offers casual indoor and outdoor seating. We stopped by for a spontaneous sushi lunch and ordered a couple of basic rolls to share which came with the standard soy sauce, wooden chopsticks and fresh ginger. Service was swift and friendly. My only beef was that the plastic water "glasses" were yellowed and old looking and should probably be replaced. Why was the salad in the Bulgogi bento box the best/most flavorful part of it... the rice was very dry and stiff somehow. Fried batter had no type of seasoning. This was so bland and disappointing as a whole. Sushi roll almost made up for it. I guess if you're going to come here, come here for the rolls. Really disappointing experience with the customer service here. We came in simply asking for a table, and the young hostess/server with a French braid was completely rude and dismissive to my mom who was only asking a question. We were on a tighter timeline, but having worked in the food industry myself, there's no excuse for treating paying guests with that level of disrespect. Asked the server with the lip piercing if they did à la carte for bulgogi, she doesn't know what à la carte is? So I have to explain it to her. Which is crazy because she is a server after all. They don't do bulgogi à la carte, so fine whatever I order salmon nigiri instead. She puts in a bulgogi bento box and brings out a side of bulgogi and rice. It's supposed to come w tempura, miso, and salad as well. So it kind of feels like a rip off that she would put it in when I never ordered the bento box. This place has absolutely amazing food! Our server was so friendly and patient, we sat outside and still received great service. They have a lot to choose from on the menu, including extensive vegetarian/vegan rolls and options. I requested soy paper and the roll came out in the cutest pink wrapping! Also if you have food allergies They can not accommodate and If you brought food of your own because they don't have food accommodations you're not going be allowed at the restaurant. We ordered tonkatsu ramen, sorrento roll and lobster popcorn roll which were all tasty and fresh. For the ramen, definitely ask for the spicy paste. The broth is not as rich as I would like a ramen broth but it was still good and spice paste definitely improved it. It's not an uncomfortable type of spice so don't be afraid of it because it makes a huge difference: The service is friendly. They don't come around often so make sure you ask for everything you need when they do come around. First off, La Jolla is absolutely gorgeous. This sushi joint is located right on the main strip in my opinion of La Jolla. There's plenty of outdoor and indoor seating, but I prefer to sit outdoors, especially because of the beautiful weather. The sushi is very good quality, everything tasted very fresh. My favorite item on the menu was definitely the green muscles. OUTSTANDING!!! The service was exceptional. Parking wasn't even too bad, but it can be a little tricky out there so make sure you come early. If nothing else, you have to try the Fugu roll here, it's honestly one of the best rolls I've had. Every person I've brought so far has loved that one, it never fails. Other recommendations are the miso cream udon, and you can't go wrong with the sushi too. I tend not to under estimate restaurants at the Shores because I've never had a bad experience anywhere I've ate. This appears to be the only "Asian" restaurant in the area. TERIYAKI CHICKEN BENTO BOX ($19) - served with miso soup, salad, tempura, and rice. The miso soup first arrived and it was mediocre. Taste was there but it was soup without the good stuff and missinf tofu, green onions, and seaweed. But when the bento was delivered to the table it made up for the meh feeling about the miso. The bento box was huge and portions were generous - I had some left overs I took home. The rice was cooked well, the tempura was crunchy and yummy, the salad was the typical salad with Asian sweet-tangy dressing, and the teriyaki chicken was plentiful with a light coat of teriyaki on top. Not my favorite teriyaki sauce but it was still good. My cuts of chicken were tender - however I do wish they were browned a little more because I do like grilled charred edges and makes on my chicken teriyaki. Overall, this was a good bento box.
