They offer a limited happy hour menu from 3-6 PM, with all items priced at $5, which is a fair deal. I ordered the house cab and a salmon hand roll--both were just okay. My husband tried the shrimp tempura, which came with tempura green beans (since I'm celiac, I didn't try tempura) and we shared the warm salted edamame. The 15-piece chef's choice sashimi arrived first, but there was a noticeable delay, both for the food and my happy hour wine. Service was a bit slow overall, and our waitress didn't offer a second glass of wine until we were about to leave, so I ended up skipping it. We decided to stick with the basic Nigiri because the rolls took fusion to a level that just didn't seem appetizing to us We ordered the albacore and upon biting into it was very tough and impossible to chew, and we brought it to the attention of the sushi chef who promptly replaced it with essentially the same thing. We did a little bit of research on why this may have happened and found that it's either a low quality fish or wasn't cleaned properly. We also had the crispy rice and the rice felt very gluey. We sat inside at the sushi bar and it does have a bit of a stuffy hot feel when you walk in, but the door was left open so it felt a little bit better. With all of this, we decided to cut our losses and move on to somewhere else for dinner. read more

We went to a sushi bar today and sat down at 1:31 PM. We placed our order shortly after, expecting a normal wait time. 55 minutes later, our food still hadn't arrived. During that time, we watched multiple tables who were seated 40 minutes after us receive their food before we did. The restaurant also wasn't very busy, which made the situation even more frustrating. After waiting nearly an hour with no food, I finally got up and told the waitress we were leaving and to cancel our entire order because we simply couldn't wait any longer. Unfortunately, there was no urgency or concern from the staff about what had happened. This experience completely ruined the day for me, my wife, and our two kids. Waiting that long with no communication or care from the staff is unacceptable. When I say this is the slowest service I've ever experienced, I truly mean it. Sadly, we will never eat here again, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else either Also on a last note.... I'm surprised by the high ratings here, so if you're on the fence like I was, here's my experience. We made a reservation, but when we arrived it wasn't busy at all. There were 3 of us, and service was still incredibly slow. For example, it took about 20 minutes just to get an iced tea. The bigger issue was the food. In a place like La Jolla, I expect high-quality fish, and this just didn't deliver. The fish tasted bland and even looked off, noticeably paler than sushi I've had elsewhere. The crispy rice was disappointing, more mushy than crispy and pretty messy overall. The spicy scallop roll was so bad my cousin sent it back. The only thing I enjoyed was the albacore nigiri. I'd skip the Casanova, the Prospect, and the spicy tuna crispy rice. read more

I absolutely love this cozy sushi spot on prospect st. The service is always on point and I have yet to be disappointed with the food. Ever! I love the salmon here. Best in SD in my opinion because it's consistently delicious. The tuna tango is a great choice for your tastebuds. The truffle oil and the cilantro w avocado is chefs kiss perfection. The parking is literally the only negative and it has zero to do with the business just the location. For being in the village the sushi is very reasonably priced and the menu has a ton of vegetarian options. Highly highly recommend five hard stars!!!!! bravo! Dined outside for lunch since it was a beautiful day in sunny La Jolla. There were 2-3 seagulls hanging around eyeing the customers dining outside. One of the seagulls quickly swooped in and took one piece of Nigiri from my plate! The waitress took my plate and had the sushi chef remake my sushi order. Overall had a good experience at Shiku Sushi! Got seated at the bar right away on a Friday night, it was definitely a lively place with lots of people. Ordered the miso soup and the Sun-kissed roll. The roll came with "Asian pesto" which was a bit random and didn't seem to pair particularly great with the rest of the roll. It was still good just don't know if I would order that one again! Came here during Happy hour and found some great appetizers! We ordered edamame, 3 of the hand rolls including the spicy tuna, salmon avocado, and California. They were very large and delicious. The vegetable spring rolls were crunchy and tasty. The shrimp tempura was also very good. The server was friendly and attentive and brought our food out quickly. The restaurant was cute and cozy. We sat at the table close to the windows where we had a nice view of the exterior street. It was nice to see the fog rolling in. It gave the evening a mystical atmosphere. Popped in for dinner and we were very happy with our experience! Fortunately we were able to sneak into seats at the bar, the selection of options are great for vegetarians and pescatarians alike! We all started with a warm cup of miso soup and seaweed salad. Both fresh, light flavors, and well balanced in crunch. We ordered quite a selection after a day of walking the cove and were happily full. The Chefs choice ended up being a repeat of same fish twice, and the pieces were a bit tough compared to what I was expecting but still overall very nice and clean. La Jolla roll was pretty neat coming with no rice but it was difficult to handle and the amount of imitation crab salad was a little overwhelming. The vegetarian rolls were crunchy and fresh and avocado salmon a perfect staple. If I were to go again I personally would skip rolls with the imitation crab meat, focus more on individual nigiri or sashimi and definitely more seaweed salad! There is a bar area that is front of the sushi chef which is pretty cool. The sushi chef was busy making rolls and the waitress was busy attending to customers. When we sat down there was a paper menu where you selected what you wanted - super easy! We gave our paper and ordered our drinks and waited - about 20 minutes and we got our food. The speciality rolls ordered through DoorDash were the HUNNY roll ($20) and INDY-ANA JONES & THE TEMPURA OF THE DOOM roll ($24). They were not good unfortunately. And what really made it worse is they served old black avocado. Nobody wants a roll that's mainly covered in avocado to be black. There were heaters on either side of our table which kept us toasty, even though it was a really chilly out. We started with the fried chicken, which was as a good size for the price. It was tasty, and spicy- it had a sauce drizzled on it that was similar to a spicy, Korean fried chicken sauce I'd say. It could have been a bit more crispy, but the taste was great. We ordered two rolls, the hunny and the prospect. Both of them tasted very fresh. The hunny was our favorite. They're a bit pricey for the size, but it was nice to get some good quality fish. Both servers were super sweet and personable. They gave the place a warm vibe. Id definitely recommend checking this place out. read more

The Casanova roll is definitely for someone who likes spicy food, avoid if you can't handle spice or don't like cilantro flavors. I personally liked it but when I go back, I'm going to try their other specialty rolls. The salmon avocado roll was standard but the portion size was great for the price. This is a hidden gem in La Jolla. This is a nice cozy little family restaurant not far from the coast. The staff here is amazing. They are on their game. The food is fresh and very flavorful. The Dragon Roll was new to me and I was intrigued by the detectable flavors. The "Soaring Cloud" Sake was fruity and delicious. It was a perfect addition to my meal. The service was above and beyond, as usual in my experience at Shiku. On this most recent trip Hana, Jaime, and Toshi made my lunch a memorable and sweet experience. One of my sisters had never been to SOCAL before, much less to La Jolla, so to kill time in the available hours before the Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at Snapdragon Stadium, I used my increasing streetwise senses to avoid traffic. Consequently, the chosen street gave us a good view of this restaurant as we drove past. That's the spot! We had premeditated sushi. Parking is, well, you know, a total cluster fuck here, especially as a spring weekend is starting. Sure enough, we landed a spot pretty far away, but it afforded the opportunity to walk on the seawall and visit the snoozing Sea Lions. Eventually, we made our way back to the restaurant and requested to sit inside. The staff were nice and the service was excellent. The food came out at an even pace, which was nice. The table never felt crowded with empty plates. All the rolls were excellent and expertly assembled. The sauces were also unique, not your typical variety. The restaurant itself is pretty small, but we got there around 4:15pm and were seated right away. Food review: -Edamame: bland with salt and some undercooked. -Crispy rice: delicious and super flavorful. Loved the tempura, worth a try. -Gyoza: cooked well, soft w/ the right amount of crisp. -Negitoro and Salmon handroll: both delicious and great for $5. I prefer the negitoro over salmon. -The prospect roll: interesting flavors, the oil was a nice touch. Not a fan of the spicy tuna here. If you're in the area, definitely give the happy hour a try.
