Two weeks after my previous review... Early May 2025. A Saturday 10:30am tee time. I usually never play golf on weekends due to the usual overcrowding by too many beer swilling loud screaming hooligans (HEY BROs: golf is a zen sport not a WWE Monday night RAW match) and the too slow pace of play. But not this time! Me and my visiting pal teed off #1 exactly on time. There was a 4 some in front of us. And no one behind us, that we ever saw, for the entire game. Of course the forward foursome was slower than just the two of us, even though they were riding and we walked. If we were going to wait at the tee boxes for the ahead group we instead just hung back at the putting green and practiced rolling the ball from different spots. We averaged 7 minutes putting practice on every green. As we were not in a rush, the extra time on the golf course was appreciated. This scenario is a miracle for weekend golf. I assume the reason it was possible is: Cherry Island weekend walking green fee before 1:00pm is $45. After 1:01pm the green fee drops to $22. So all the old guys play later to save 50%. I'll gladly return to an occasional week end game at Cherry Island if the open course experience is the norm. read more

Port staffing! Had to wait for golf cart since there was no one to issue carts. The course is poorly maintained, tall weeds at fairway borders and dry leaves not cleaned up. No water holes in entire course; had to search for employee with water cart. Very disappointing! Will not return especially the cost of golf had very little enjoyable things about it. read more

Good course with some challenging holes. Good pricing. Usually a decent pace of play here. Beginning golfers usually seem go over to Antelope Greens down the street so people here seem to know to keep up with the people in front of them or else let others go through. They got new carts in 2023! So that was good the old carts were pretty trashed. They're always pretty friendly in the pro shop and the bar and food area/everything's OK. The bathroom out on the golf course however could use better lighting and a little more cleaning sometimes? but at least there is a bathroom and not just a port-o-let. read more

Golfed on 3/9/25. The weather was perfect and I was excited to check out this course. It was nice and clean and super busy with a lot of golfers. The course was a bit dry, but it was in good condition. My frustration was I specifically asked if there was a beverage cart out on the course and I was told yes. That turned out not to be true and I don't like being lied to. When we got to the 9th hole, it was about 4:20pm and everything was already closed up. Their website says the restaurant was open til 5pm. Due to it closing early we could not get drinks or food. That was a bit frustrating and disappointing. read more

I played here for the first time on Wed Jan 29th. I found the course to be challenging but the course conditions could definitely use improvement. The were many dry spots as well as some literal patches on the greens! I walked it as well (almost 7 miles). I would love to see more care given to this course. Not likely to play here again, without improvements, as it is over 25 miles from home read more

Cost: Course: Facilities: Service: The facilities were bare. The bar is also the checkin desk, the retail checkout and also the restaurant. Food was limited. The course was maintained and greens were pretty well kept. It was fun and challenging. I'm a beginner so it was nice to have some open fairways. There are some challenging holes. Keep a good amount of balls on hand. The carts were beat up and I expected a little better for the price but all in all not bad. read more

This place told us it was going to be a slow pace today with how booked it was/holiday and then proceeded to tell us we are too slow! We completely understand but after a while it's like come on? I discovered this driving range with a Groupon some years back. With a bonus 20% off flash sale on Groupon I was able to get 70% off! I bought a $200 for $60 and a $100 for $30. These have lasted me at least 4 or 5 years with a lot of credit left! A simple driving range that works. No fancy automatic tee like Haggin Oaks. You do it yourself. A handful of metal targets and a big net surrounding. I find it a great place to get in some exercise hitting around 100 balls each time. The best way to get exercise is getting it while doing something fun. Come out and give Cherry Island a shot. I can't speak for the golf course but they have Groupon deals for rounds of golf. They also have a cafe which is where Iam cooling off with a soda while I write this. read more

So, masks are required inside, AND you must cart up with a stranger if you come as a single. Very contradicting. The staff is argumentative and unprofessional. I booked a group of 3. One of our players is immune compromised and needs his own cart. There's 3 of us, it shouldn't be a problem. I politely declined to have him cart up with a stranger. I said if they were low today, we could play somewhere else and come back another day. He said they'd make it work. Then I get to the cart barn and apparently we're the group that "threw a fit". We received our carts 40 minutes after our tee time. After the round we are leaving, and the gentleman from the pro shop attempts to instigate an argument with one in our group. "Hey pal, next time I'm not honoring another cart. You've been warned" Like seriously? We asked politely and offered to come back another day. This is normal at any other course. The cherry on top of cherry island is the guaranteed 5 hour round every time. read more

Tee it up! Early morning golf getaway with a good group. Very nice course with several challenging holes, not much in the way of water but plenty of water holes and many bunkers...and, drinking water containers around the course is tough to locate on those warm days...but, well worth the find...lol Fairways and greens are up to par...no pun intended. Will never play this course again! Word of warning spend your money elsewhere. Obvious they overbooked as barely 5 mins. In between each group, no fire Marshall. Guys behind us would pull up next to us while we were waiting for group ahead of us to tee off. Asked them in more than one occasion to back off... they didn't! On the 11 hole the jerks walked right up to tee box before we even tee'd off! read more

Good local track that has its challenges.just off the rough is unforgiving with lots of thorn bushes.... tip: bring an extra sleeve of balls with you. This course is in really good condition. They are doing things right. If you get on the mailing list they are always running some good deals. As of now 7/17-7/31 after 5 you can walk for $5 and cart $5. That's a super deal. read more

Went out for a later round of golf with 5+ people yesterday and after the 9th hole 3 of us decided to go into the bar for a drink, the bar tender was friendly and was willing to "pour whatever we'd pay for." During the back 9 we decide to come back around to grab another drink. Again the same 3 of us girls, bubbly friendly people, we walk in to see the same bar tender and the same customer we saw before... the bartender refused our service... he told us that he was not going to serve us based on liability and legalities that he didn't seem to understand himself but decide that he personally wasn't going to take our business??? Not to mention, the bar tender had dip in his lip! Again 3 happy bubbly ladies that all have a significant other, still on the course, none of us were drunk nor were we going to be driving home either. Very disappointed and feel very disrespected. Based on that experience alone, we will not be coming back. A special thank you to the water guy at the first hole, he definitely made our day better and was very nice! read more

One of the more difficult courses in the area that I've played at with a lot of hazardous play. If you're a beginner, this will be a difficult course to play. Like others have said, bring extra balls when playing here because you will be going through a lot of them getting them into the water or into thorn bushes and the likes. There are five Par 5 holes but even the Par 3 ones are challenging. The price is not too bad. It was $55 for one person with a cart and $38 without a cart. Other than that, the course is pretty well maintained. The greens are one of the nicest one's I've encountered in this area. read more

I honestly thought I would never need to make a yelp account, let alone for golf. Cherry Island is a BEAUTIFUL course with a lot of really neat tough holes, and well maintained fairways and greens. Unfortunately, the supervision of pace and etiquette is non existent. To start, three separate groups were sent to tee off at the exact same time, no stutter. What followed was the least structured game of golf I've ever played at a nice course like cherry island. We had a twosome averaging 30 minutes a hole. Even on Par 3s. They were double hitting second shots, getting out of the cart to search for free balls in the marsh, and generally ignoring some pretty normal etiquette. To top it off, the foursome behind us didn't care. After waiting for 10+ minutes on average to tee off due to the previously mentioned group in front of us, they were hitting balls within 10-30 feet of us as we tried to get our second shots off the fairway in a hurry. Imagine being repeatedly slowed, hit into, not seeing a single Marshall through 18, and coming back to a closed clubhouse. Beautiful course but extremely frustrated by the lack of etiquette enforcement and non existent Marshall's. read more

This isn't the Cherry Island Golf Course it used to be. Maintaince has definitely taken a downturn. The guy in the pro shop was great. The shop was very nice and neat. The course on the other hand is showing signs of the ownership saving lots of money!!! There aren't but just a few ball washers available. No rags to dry the golf balls. Several holes with no trash cans, so golfers were leaving their trash next to the tee box or on the benches. The cart paths are in great need of repair. They just aren't being maintained. Several places along the course where drainage is a problem. Currently pricing is $50 with a cart ($43senior) on a Friday @ 8am. It'll be a while before I return. read more

The slowness. "Player assistant" is disrespectful and needs some marshaling classes! We kindly asked to get someone to talk to the 4some in front of our 4some, to pick up the pace considering the group in front of them was 2 holes ahead but instead we get nothing but offensive remarks and excuses then we were told to "just shut your ass up and play!" Just played for first time. I play all over Sacramento and in short--the course was in really good shape, the layout is really fun: had a great time. Course: This course is like a combination of Ansel Hoffman, a little narrow at times with lots of lefts and rights--in fact at least one hole with a double dogleg--and Mather, which is is a bit more forgiving but longer. Really good layout with lots of risk/reward tee shots, and unless your index is 10 or below, I recommend the white tees which brings into play cutting the corners of some doglegs by going up and over trees. Playing from the blues will make it more position golf, where you are hitting to a layup spot and takes the driver out or your hands on some holes. In either case, if you can shape the ball a bit you have an advantage. Greens: Really good on my round, no brown spots, well-maintained and challenging, anything but flat or boring. We tee'd off at 1 and finished at 6, and the greens stayed in good shape, and not as fuzzy as Ansel's and others can get late in the day Tee boxes: many were fine, several a little rough, but consider that Chambers Bay, the site of this year's U.S. Open purposefully provides slope in its tee boxes so you can choose one that fits your desired shot shape--work with it! Food: I called the grill on 9 so I could get a sandwich on the turn and, fair warning, main kitchen closes at 3, so some options were off the table. Ended up ordering a ham and cheese panini on wheat, turned out to be really good crunchy wheat, and it was one of the best paninis I've ever had, and huge. Once I saw it, I could not talk one of my playing partners into splitting it, but a golfer who had wandered over from bar bought half of it for $5. Nice. So, this is the end of March, 2015, and while this course may not have been in good shape in previous years it is now and I recommend it. In fact it's now in my rotation. read more

I first played this course a few years ago, didn't remember why I didn't come back. Now I do. Cherry Island is listed as participating in the Youth on Course program, which is a great deal in which greens fees for kids are greatly reduced to $5 and below. Unfortunately Cherry Island (run by Sacramento County) charged me an additional $12 for my son to ride in the cart alongside me. So basically his total fees today were $17 instead of the advertised $5. My son and I play golf nearly every other weekend in the Sacramento Area. When I lived in the east bay we played as much or more. In almost 10 years, I have never had a course that participated in YOC charge me EXTRA for a child sitting in a seat next to an adult. You already have MY money for the cart, but evidently the county needs this additional $12. The whole point of YOC is to allow kids to golf often (including low income families), so this price gouge is really ridiculous and shameful. Oh yeah, when we arrived at the first tee at our designated tee time we had to wait for 2 groups to play ahead, evidently they were already backed up by 30 minutes at noon. After being bilked out of $12 for having my young son sit next to me they IMMEDIATELY told me they didn't have any carts, so we had to sit and wait for one. Also, the fairways looked indistinguishable from the rough, there were leaves everywhere, and the round took 3 hours to play 9 holes before we left because we didn't feel like losing any more balls in the middle of the fairway that they are too lazy to adequately mow. Just sell the land to a private company who will take care of it and run it properly, provide enough carts that you needlessly charge little kids for (that one really bugs me if you can't tell) and not jam foursome after foursome in there to the point the round is unplayable after noon. The other twosome at my tee time didn't show (they were not in my party) so of course they rammed another 2 guys in there at the last minute to get their money instead of letting us off as a twosome. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that you can't jam all these people on the course every 5 minutes and expect the players to pay at a decent pace, especially considering you tend to have inexperienced golfers on the weekends. What a miserable experience from top to bottom. Never again. read more

Do not waste your money here. We called in and spoke to someone on the phone and asked about twilight pricing. He let us know it showed $40 online but to ignore that price because it would only be $25 since they had just aerated the greens. We made a tee time and when we showed up the guy behind the counter told us it would be $45 a piece. When we told him our conversation from earlier he said "clearly you weren't listening to the guy on the phone because we never would have said that" and then proceeded to argue with us and then throw the cart keys on the ground for us to pick up. If you leave all of that out of the question, I would still give this place a negative rating. The course conditions were absolutely horrendous. The tee boxes were over grown and all crab grass and the tee boxes were extremely unleveled, the grass was over my shoes and I could barely tee up it was so tall. The fairways were only crabgrass and mud, and had no nice sections. And the greens were completely littered with junk and patches of dead grass. I understand they had just been aerated but even then it was absolutely awful. The Marshall was not keeping the pace of any of the groups in front of us and just told us it would be a "slow golf day". This happened about a month ago, but I called and left multiple messages for the management team and wanted to give them a chance to make it right before I wrote my review. I still have not heard back and that clearly shows me that they do not care about their customers or their course. All in all, save your money and go somewhere else. There are much cheaper and nicer courses in the area with much friendlier staff. read more

Let me start by saying that the course itself is nice and the staff has always been pleasant and accommodating. My husband and I really enjoy the course overall and played there often even though it's not as convenient as others. Unfortunately the last couple visits were spoiled by ONE very rude Marshall, which is sad, because most of the Marshalls and staff have been great. Example: when 'The Marshall' was offering water to players he would bypass our cart. At first I thought it was an oversight, but soon realized it was intentional, as he would offer water to my husband and the other men in our group when I was wasn't nearby. To boot, he was yelling across the course to the next T-Box (sitting next to mine) while I was trying to tee off and even drove his cart across our fairway when I was trying to hit my ball to the green. He did not behave that way when the men were in play. And let me just add that throwing his cigar butts on the course is extremely rude! read more

Course is just ok. Nothing special compared to others in the area. Pro Shop customer service is HORRIBLE. Several times there were Hour plus delays on carts and even had one cart battery die on back nine. Of course pro shop didn't pick up so had to bum a ride back to parking lot. Went in today with a prepaid booking and asked to go out early due to rain forecast in afternoon. Course was completely empty but pro shop refused and wanted to charge me $56!! What a joke.. Never going back. Too many other choices with far superior course conditions and better customer service. read more

It has been years since I have played Cherry Island. What a shame as it is in fantastic shape. The greens were all fair and true and the course was beautiful. The second cut was pretty brutal as there were times where I had a heck of a time finding my ball. The course plays 6511 from the tips and is a good course for the intermediate golfer. The back nine is where you can do your scoring as it is shorter and you will have the rhythm of the course by then. The 7th is a tough hole as you have water along the right side, but you have to make sure to stay close to the water as the green is across and it is a 160 yard shot a elevated green with traps covering the right front. Yikes....tough hole. Hopefully, I can make it back soon. read more

I usually like to play this course. But I will NEVER play this course in the fall or winter time nor do I recommend this course to anyone else. The maintenance crew needs to be fired!!! Their the lazies maintenance crew on the planet. Yes, I understand that there is a lot of trees on this course but PICK UP YOU GOD FOR SAKEN LEAVES. Blowing them off the fairway to the sides is ridiculous. Mowing over them would be just as effective. A four and a half hour round took just about 6hrs because of looking for your ball in the damn leaves. Plus there's NO WATER to drink on the course. They said there are fountains but the water comes out white and cloudy. Other then the leaves the course is in pretty descent shape. read more

I bought a golf coupon book and it came with free golf here at Cherry Island. I play a few rounds a week all around Sacramento and have never been here. So I made the trip excited to play a new course. This place looks like it would've been decent somewhere between the time of draft dodging and disco. The problem is, it hasn't been updated at all since then. The range it dated and completely worn out. The carts look like they should be in a museum. My front yard is in better shape than the greens the tee boxes are completely domed and about the third or fourth hole the entire course is covered in goose crap. Not here and there... COVERED! After slogging through water fowl feces for three or four holes my friend and I decided to call it a day after it took THREE AND A HALF HOURS to cover seven holes with no marshal in site! We walked out on FREE GOLF! On the way out we stopped by the pro shop to tell the kid (who was very good) and he offered two rain checks. I declined. After leaving the nice kid in the pro shop I jumped back in the cart to take our clubs out to the car. Surprise! The cart dies! This place isn't even worth the time if it's free! read more

Cherry Island is a very nice course. The greens are in excellent shape. the course is challenging enough to keep most players interest. It is also a beautiful course with wild life and views. The greens are a bit fast so you have to adapt. The atmosphere is extremely friendly. The price is reasonable too. Its a fun course to play for different levels. They have 4 sets of Tees. Placed right . The driving range is off the grass, or least it was the day I played. It is a well kept course. Very clean. They also have a pro shop and a nice café. there is a putting and chipping are also. I will look forward to playing again here soon. Its fun to try new places. Very laid back atmosphere. read more

This course is pretty good for beginners. Very wide and forgiving fairways on some of the holes. You know it's your kind of place to golf when you get through 18 holes and somehow only lost 3 balls the entire day. The course itself is A-OK. There aren't any nice views, and the greens are maintained quite well. The pro shop was surprisingly very nice, as were all the staff who work there. I had a lot of fun golfing here, even though it wasn't one of the best courses I've played. Overall, a good, cheap, and fun place to play 18 holes when you're feeling down on your golf game. read more

COURSE CONDITIONS Found a discounted rate online and arrived Sunday March 16 at 9:30 AM. When I arrived I was told that the reason the rates were discounted was because the greens were just air-rated and in horrible condition. Not only were the greens in awful condition, the tee boxes were not level, meaning it was difficult to find a place to tee off where your ball is even with your feet. I would have rather paid the full rate at another course that was in good condition. UNANNOUNCED ACTIVITIES ON THE COURSE On the very first hole I noticed on my 2nd shot that were two random flags placed in the middle of the fairway with a large 3 foot diameter hole for each (imagine a putting green hole but 30 times larger). We all thought they were being used for chipping practice since they weren't actually on a green. Then we noticed that these holes and flags are all over the course! After we asked around, we were told that these were being used for "foot golf". This is a family-friendly game in which people kick soccer balls down fairways and try to make it into the holes... just like golf. The flags placed all over the course were extremely distracting especially when you haven't played the course before. Then we come to find out that they allow the foot golf game to be played AT THE SAME TIME AS THEY ALLOW GOLFERS ON THE COURSE! I was teeing off on the 5th hole and along comes a family of four walking in our fairway kicking a soccer ball! I really was in disbelief that a golf course would allow this to happen and was appalled that they gentlemen in the clubhouse didn't inform us of this activity when we paid our rate. If you continue reading reviews from other Yelpers you'll notice this activity is consistent with other reviews. PACE The course was extremely crowded. Perhaps it was because the course was over booked due to the online discount, or maybe it was because you have to wait for the foot golfers to play through. In any case it took us 3 hours, yes 3 hours to play 9-holes. Luckily the group ahead of us didn't make the turn but all in all we played 18-holes in 5 1/2 hours. THE LOWDOWN Needless to say I won't be back to their facilities and I would encourage you to not book a tee time unless of course you're into "foot golf". If indeed you are into foot golf, then knock yourself out. Literally. read more

Played this course back in September last year, but haven't gotten around to review the course till now. Good: The course layout is straight forward but each hole has good amount of OB, but this is what makes it challenging. Some holes are deceiving in that they don't play as long as noted at the tee box, only brought out the big stick a couple of times. The course is in decent shape, fairways could have been mowed, but the greens, for the most part, were in good condition. The course is not the best in the area, but it's in better shape than Haggin. There are a lot of good deals for this course on Golfnow.com Bad: Pro shop staff was a little rude. We should up to our tee time 5 mins. late (the course is good ways off of 80), and instead moving us to another tee time and letting the groups behind us get on first, they canceled our tee time (minus 1 star). I apologized for showing up mins. late, but these guys weren't having it. I had to fight to get another tee time. They found us another tee time but we had to pay full price, but told them that I can book the same time on Golfnow for half the price. This made them more upset , but there was nothing they can do as they had to honor the Golfnow price. The course gets backed up (minus 1 star). We had to wait a min. of 10-15 mins. at each tee box (3 hours to complete front 9) Back 9 was little better. Overall, the course is decent track and aside from the pace of play and bad experience with Pro shop staff, will play course again. read more

Very friendly staff. The golf course was in great shape. Pretty narrow fairways for the most part with a lot of the holes requiring you to hit a club or two under your driver. All the par 3 greens are extremely wide and therefore easy to hit. The replay rate on the weekdays is only $15 so we decided to play 36 holes. read more
