One of my lifelong passions is golf-from the moment I picked up a club when I was 17 years old,I…read moreknew an obsession was being born.Along the way,I've had good highs and good lows, like the time I quit the sport for 10 years because I played a round so terrible at the Ridge in Auburn,I lost 18 balls in one round, but that being said I always come back.Im the kind of guy who will go to the driving range 10 times between actually playing a round, practice makes perfect or whatever they say,so I decided I would write a few reviews of some of my favorite driving ranges-I'm starting my series with one driving range that I probably frequent the most or 2nd most,it's one convenient to my home-I'm talking about Leader Golf on El Centro Road in Natomas. Right off the bat-you got to know this place is not fancy-this is the kind of place the serves that golfer who is just beginning-the kind of person who maybe has thought about golf and wants to give it a shot-this is where they head. This driving range is truly a no judgement zone,so many beginners,so many people there who this may be the 1st time they ever held a golf club-I love that about this place, you never know who your going to see here,it can be someone like me who has been playing golf for over 30 years or literally a kid or teenager or woman's group or older person who has never touched a club before-your going to see all types of people, every age, every skill level and it's great. This place has zero dress code-not that all golf course do but some places you can really standout if u show up in gym shorts and a tank top-but not here-anything goes and nobody will give u a 2nd look if u have no clue what your doing. The place has a few cool features that I enjoy-it has a putting area so you can go out there and work on your putting at zero cost.It has a very good short game area where one can work on their short game but it does cost $7 an hour to get access to that area. This place does have ample parking so that should never be a problem, there is a pro shop on premises as well-Inside your able to buy range tokens which you use to get range balls to use on the range.Prices range from $7 for a small bucket(40 balls) to $24 for a "Leader" bucket which is 200 balls. What I do is buy the Leader bucket for $24 and they give you 5 tokens for 40 balls each and then I spread out their usage over multiple visits since 40 balls is more than enough for a driving range session, which brings the cost down to under $5 a bucket-a very very good price for a small bucket. The pro shop also sells beers and sodas and snacks along with just about any other golf accessory you could possibly need from driving range tees to full on brand new golf sets-it's a decent shop-gets the job done. The gentleman who owns the range also works the shop-he is an amazingly kind man,he is a little rough around the edges when you first meet him but once you get to know him,he is the best-super helpful and chatty-he is truly an asset to this location. Overall what I will say about this place is this-if you have ever had the idea that maybe you have an interest in golf and want to go to a judgement free spot where you can try it out-this is your place. If you want a no frills spot to go and work on your game-this is your place. If you want a spot you and your friends can meet and chill and maybe throw back a beer or two while doing something somewhat active-this is your place. So do yourself a favor and head on out to Leader Golf and give this amazing game a chance-it just might start a lifelong obsession-see ya out there. I think in every city, there are things they are known for or things that are just iconic about the…read morecity and are truly spots you must visit in order to fully get a true picture of the soul of that city. In Sacramento when one brings up the golfing scene, the true mecca of golf in Sacramento begins and ends with Haggin Oaks Golf complex and Driving Range. In this review I wanna talk specifically about the driving range. My history with this range goes back pretty far,all the way back to 1996 when I moved to Sacramento from the Bay Area and didn't know a soul-so after work, especially on weekends with not much to do,I spent many a Friday and Saturday nights at the Haggin Oaks Driving Range working tirelessly on trying to perfect this game that is truly impossible to perfect. Over the years many things have changed at this range but a lot of very important things have remained the same, including a quality practice facility with well maintained mats and tees, along with quality balls to use when practicing at this location. Some of my favorite things today that they have that for sure didn't exist back in the 90s is the Top Tracer displays available at every practice stall which provides you with endless options for however you want to practice-be it golf games or serious data tracking to evaluate how far and straight you're hitting the golf ball. This facility is extremely popular,I would say it's the most popular range in Sacramento-if you come here on any random Friday or Saturday,no matter the hours,I guarantee this place will be packed, though there are so many practice stalls available,a spot will open up pretty quickly. Another thing I love about this spot is the ability to try out clubs in the pro shop before you buy them for free-you just go into the pro shop and find a club you want to try, then register with the pro shop guy and then just take the club out to the range for a quick practice session before deciding on purchasing the golf club. Haggin Oaks also has both a food truck on the premises and a bar stand where one can buy various alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy while working on your craft. Personally I've never bought any food from the truck but I do see people rave about the quality of their food offerings. This facility also has 3 separate putting greens one can use to practice their putting game-along with a separate area one can use to work on their chipping skills for free. I will admit this place isn't the cheapest place in the area to practice when it comes to the price of the balls, but I would say their prices are competitive with most golf courses and when you include the quality of this facility,I would say Haggin Oaks is unmatched. 25 balls cost around $6,while a large bucket of 100 balls run around $22. In closing-if the idea of trying out this game I love so much has ever crossed your mind and you want to come to a family friendly, skill friendly, wallet friendly environment-Haggin Oaks is your spot. Come on out and try this beautiful game of ours called golf.

I want to start by saying that Haggin Oaks Golf Course and its facilities are fantastic. The…read moregrounds, range, and overall experience of being at the course are excellent. I truly enjoy being there. However, the quality and professionalism of some of the golf instruction staff need serious attention. I've participated in multiple group classes and had experiences with at least three older male instructors. While I respect their years of experience and knowledge of the game, the teaching environment has often felt outdated and, at times, inappropriate. There have been repeated "good old boys" style jokes, dismissive comments, and remarks directed toward women that felt unnecessary and unprofessional. One instructor, Don Pottle, even told several of us that he would "cut off our hands" if we held the club the wrong way again. While I understand that this may have been intended as humor, comments like that create an uncomfortable and intimidating learning environment -- especially for newer golfers. Golf is evolving. The culture of the sport is becoming more inclusive, welcoming, and diverse. Instruction should reflect that shift. Many new players -- especially women and younger golfers -- are looking for knowledgeable coaches who can teach effectively without relying on outdated humor or intimidation tactics. Haggin Oaks has an opportunity to lead in this area. Expanding the instructional staff to include more women and younger instructors, or investing in professional development around inclusive coaching, would make a significant difference. The facilities are great. The teaching culture just needs to catch up with the times.

It's rather spread out over a large plot of land. I originally contemplated walking the course, it's pancake fat, but nursing a lower back injury and not feeling 100% I decided to ride. Glad that I did. There are long stretches between the putting greens and the next tee box. I estimate that a total walk would be about 8,500 yards. Course conditions are okay, not pristine. Putting greens rolled about 10 on the Stimp scale. Fairways are mowed adequately. If your ball does end in the trees / rough, it's usually pretty easy to find. Though some fairways are lined with painful thorn filled blackberry bushes, just like most golf courses in northern California. If you are wearing shorts you won't be crawling through the stickers to retrieve your ball. For a senior golfer during the week the green fee is $52. Not a bargain, but this is the going price at many of the other courses in the metro Sacramento / Placer county region. I did enjoy the game here. Did I like it more than the Cherry Island municipal course located in Elverta (12 minute drive from here)? Probably not. Cherry Island layout is more interesting and more challenging.

I originally was going to drive all the way to the US Pro Golf Store in Dublin. The day I went in I called ahead and schedule a time with Nick Waterworth. I as just "looking" and wasn't really planning on getting clubs that day. Nick stepped me through this incredibly involved process of club fitting. That was the reason I was there. Honestly, when you meet a fantastic quality customer service person in any field, the process is enjoyable. The equipment he used was the same equipment pro golfers use on the PGA Tour. It's called a Trackman Launch Monitor. It's amazing. With his guidance for over an hour, I decided to go ahead and order the clubs and then pay when I came back to get them. I'll put a link to the equipment he used. But having a customer service rep that spends so much time getting me the right set of clubs was just great. I highly recommend Nick if you are considering getting new clubs or perhaps just adding one to your mix. He has been at Haggin Oaks for 17 years. I really appreciate great customer service and wanted to give them a shout out for the quality time they spent helping me - at the time just "looking". Big thank you guys - Looking forward to getting out to golf more soon. https://www.hagginoaks.com/player-performance-studio/

To be fair, we did get an initial warning from the marshal about pace of play, and I completely understand that. I was playing with a friend who was on his first round ever, so we expected to need to be mindful and appreciated the heads-up. What didn't make sense was what happened after. The marshal came back just one hole later and then proceeded to watch us play for the next three holes. It felt excessive and honestly pretty uncomfortable, especially considering the circumstances. I was playing great, and my friend was doing the right thing by picking up when needed and not holding things up. I even checked with the group behind us, and they said we were keeping a perfectly fine pace. On top of that, the course wasn't particularly busy, which made the situation even more confusing. For a course that advertises itself as beginner-friendly, this didn't feel very welcoming. A reminder about pace is one thing, but hovering over players, especially newer ones, takes away from the experience. Overall, the course itself is fine, but the way this was handled really hurt the round. I hope management can take a look at how marshals approach situations like this in the future.
