I seen a post of Facebook about Chen's Store. I got super excited because I've been wanting to save some pictures in this laptop that I had for many years. Called Jeffery (owner) spoke to him and told him what kind of services I wanted. I just wanted to save my pictures I told him. He said ok, come at 1. He does only appointments because of covid. I got there, parking is a little hard to find but I parked by Goodwill. I paid a $45 diagnostic fee. He said he will look into the laptop more and if there is anything else that needs to be done he will call me. 20 minutes goes by and he tells me this computer still good!!! You want to save it or just save pictures. I said whaaaaat save it, how much it that gonna be?? Anyways, I got a new hard drive with a bigger GB, new charger for laptop (I lost the original one), newest windows update, practically a new laptop!! All of this for $300. And I got my laptop back by 3:30. I'm thankful and very happy happy happy!! Having my pictures saved was everything, but to have my laptop working new is a miracle. Very late review but figure I post this, I came here around five years ago for a diagnostic on one of my computers. It seemed okay at first and he calls me about how he can fix my computer for 300 dollars, then he later gives me another call about saying how it isn't worth it and that it won't even turn on. I head to the store later on and he casually throws around one of my plugs and says that it can't turn on even though I later returned home with it and it was able to turn on... He then tried to sell me some of his computers at the store and told me they came with only a 15 day warranty but were insanely overpriced. I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Called to see if they sold an adapter to connect a new iPad to an old computer, sadly he said they did not sell apple products. After hanging up the gentleman called back in less than five minutes to tell me he thought he had a solution. He searched through his shop and found a cord that he thought would work. This business just moved into Kaneohe from Kailua, but they have been building and repairing computers for a long time. Jeffrey is the owner and works with his wife. There may be other technicians but no one else was around on Saturday. My desktop was having an intermittent power button problem. After three years of use, the wiring and mechanical switch had deteriorated. The options were to replace the case siding, buy a new case, or re-wire an external switch. The latter choice would also enable me to re-position the button for a more convenient reach. Jeffrey took less than an hour to fabricate a new power button. It saved me 1-2 hundred dollars, and a lot of down time. While I was waiting, customers bought computer peripheries and Mobi hotspots. They also have a shelf of custom made desktops, ready to go. One gaming system looked good for a discounted $1370 price. I would recommend coming here for your hardware and software computer needs. read more

Seriously dont go anywhere else for computer parts and repair. Chens store has been a Kailua Institution since hannabatta days when I was a toddler and it was still a hybrid convenience and computer store behind taco bell. I went to Target first to look for some mundane computer parts for my new PC that came in, and they were sold out of everything that I was looking for. I checked a couple of other stores to no avail before I even remembered Chens store. Never going anywhere else again, this is the definition of the local business you should support. read more

I took my laptop in to Chen's store because I thought it had some problems with the cooling fan. I was greeted happily and Mr. Chen and his wife were very clear and polite with the diagnostic service they were going to provide at an affordable $35. I wasn't expecting to get my laptop back for a couple days, but Chen called me after only a few hours with very detailed results about my laptop. I met with him the next day (they are open Sundays! SO convenient!) and he sat down with me and did some analysis on my computer. He found a problem with my CPU and also gave me a few different options about how to get it fixed. He was very polite, informative, and did not try to push any sales on me, nor did he charge me anything extra. Overall I was very pleased with the service at Chen's and I am happy to support a local Kailua business. In the future when I want to build a computer I will definitely visit Chen's Store. Chen is so awesome. Yesterday was the second time I've taken a computer to him. This time, he performed the diagnosis, fixed it, and didn't charge me anything for the repair beyond the diagnostic fee (like $40). He explains what's going on in such an easy to understand way (especially for a computer-challenged person like me), doesn't ever try to up sell you even when you don't know anything, and gives you great tips on how to get or maintain your computer cost effectively. Normally I repair my own computer I was stump by the symptoms I kind of thought the graphics card was bad or mother board, so I gave Chen a call and brought my computer in, he worked on it right away did a diagnostic and determined that my graphics card was bad and memory modules were unstable. Originally made an appointment at the Apple store to see why my iMac ran horribly slow but instead took it to Chen's for a diagnosis since he's right in Kailua. I am so grateful I did, I dropped it off in the morning, he powered it up to see what problems I was having and diagnosed the problem on the spot as being the hard drive. He spent the time explaining how damage can occur and the different types of hard drives (SSD vs HDD). It's kind of what I thought, and what the online and phone Apple Care folks could not determine a few months ago when it was still warrantied. He reinstalled the OS via a USB and called me a few hours later to pick it up. Now my iMac runs super fast and smooth like it's brand new again! Knowledgable guy with great/speedy service. Brought my custom build pc in with no idea what was wrong, and he called me within a half hour to tell me the video card was dead. $35 diagnostic fee, for a problem that took me 5 minutes to fix; other places charge $150 for the same service and it takes them days. Chen also has a wide variety of parts in stock, so managed to pick up the new part then and there. Definitely will be coming back here for all my future computer issues. read more

This is a local store right across from the library in Kailua. We thought the hard drive on our newer computer had failed and took it to Best Buy, where we purchased it just 18 months ago - they quoted us $120 just to do diagnostics. We tried to fix it on our own without much luck and decided to take it to Chen's - they charged under $40 for diagnosis, and credited that amount toward the repair! They ordered and installed a new motherboard and were able to save most of our hard drive files. He found a lower price for the part than we originally paid for and refunded us the difference. Very honest, fair prices, great, fast service, good communication about what is wrong, what the plan is to fix it, and how to avoid it in the future. Brought my computer in and Chen repaired it did a great job. He recommended I change my spyware to McAfee,so he sold me the program for $59.00, told me it was simple to install, which I did. After one secession The computer wouldn't boot up. So I took it back as it was inside the 14 day warranty. Once there he wanted $150.00 to repair it, he said that was 1/2 price and he said the McAfee sold to me was the problem. I am a Kailua business man, I would never do this to a customer I was a return customer. this is wrong. Had I not bought his recommended program, I had a existing one, I wouldn't have had this problem. I'll take it to someone else to get fixed, I'm not giving him any more of my business. My three year old desktop computer was acting up. I dropped it off with Mr Chen in the morning. Two hours later I received a call with the diagnosis: bad microprocessor. He quoted the cost of replacing the faulty unit. I asked about a memory upgrade and he quoted that as well. After agreeing to proceed I waited no more than one hour and he called me back saying the computer was ready for pick up. When I arrived he plugged it in to show me that all was well. So in half a day he diagnosed and fixed it. Price was reasonable. And he and his wife are very friendly. This is what excellent service is all about. Five stars!! read more

Love Mr. and Mrs. Chen and the excellent service I received at their store. The keyboard quit working on my laptop and I was freaking out thinking I needed a whole new computer. I stopped by after work one day and both Mr. and Mrs. Chen were very friendly and assured me that a new keyboard was all I needed. The part was ordered and once received they fixed it within 10 minutes!!! Unreal !! I also had them order me a new battery and he installed that at the same time. I have been using YELP for years to find everything from restaurants, a/c service, electricians, plumbers, etc, but this is the first time my experience has brought me to leave a review. I cannot recommend Chen's Computer Repair enough. I had brought my laptop that could not power on to a place I had been using for years. But after a week of holding onto my computer they told me that it could not be fixed and that I should buy a new laptop. Well, as a last ditch effort I decided to give Chen's a try. After a matter of hours I received a call to say that my laptop was fixed!! Mr. Chen will go the extra effort to think outside the box if necessary to find a fix and in my case he did. I will always come here first. He informs you fully of the problem and what needs to be done to fix it. I cannot thank the Chens enough for saving my laptop, that was 5 years old and chock full of work files and treasured pics. Thank you a million times. My initial impression of this small businessman was quite good after I took my Gateway desktop computer to him for repair last August (2011). He assessed the problem, replacing the power supply, got it back to me promptly (much quicker and somewhat cheaper than Geek Squad). 5 months later the computer began having similiar problems again. Examining the machine, I noted that the power supply fan was not working and I took it back to him. At first, he refused to even examine the machine, then pushed me off on the power supply manufacturer (Casegears). He further showed me that this power supply was warranteed in the 48 contiguous, but not Hawaii. It is a $18 power supply that he ferociously marks up to $60. I ultimately purchased a power supply on my own and installed it (a simple bolt-and-plug task). I came away from this experience extremely deflated about my local businessman's intentional use of the most inferior replacement parts, mark up over 300%, and then refusal to stand behind his work when they (not surprisingly) fail. I recommend those with computer problems to steer clear of Chen's. read more

I have been using them for a couple of years now, and always had great, fast and relaible service. They have worked on Windows and Linux laptops for me and solved a number of problems that I have not been able to figure out on my own with tech support. They always discuss the issues, give me options and estimated costs before they do anything, and then get it done right and quickly. The shop is not fancy and they don't have a massive selection of hardware, but they always seem to have what I need and are a great local business. In addition to wanting to upgrade the RAM in my laptop, I also wanted to upgrade my Hard Drive. I have a 250GB Hard Drive, but with all the pictures and videos, not to mention my iTunes collection, I wanted to upgrade to a bigger size. Again, rather then just taking my money and doing the upgrade, Jeffrey educated me first! He explained to me that it is better to store data on an External Hard Drive, and to preserve the life of the data and Hard Drive, he suggested that it be plugged in and powered up only when needed and never moved. The reasons he gave me not to get a bigger Hard Drive for my laptop to store data was that it would slow down the performance of my computer, also that the "internal" Hard Drive is always on when the computer is turned on, therefore the life of the Hard Drive is short! So guess what??? Again, I did not do the upgrade, and again Jeffrey was not mad nor did he try to convince me to spend my money. (Review 2 of 3) read more
