H11. Kung Pao Tofu Dinner
Sophie C.

This is the most bland Chinese food we've ever had, unfortunately. Ordered Kung Pao tofu and General Tso tofu...both somehow "watered down" and lacking flavor. Kung Pao didn't have any spicy ness at all! Do not recommend! $15 for an entree like this is ridiculous.

Spinach and Bean Curd Soup
Maya B.

Although I have yet to experience the full array of options (including a fake meat option for pretty much every standard Chinese restaurant dish--very exciting for someone who does not eat meat!), what I have tried is great. The General Tso's vegi (fake) chicken ($12.50 dinner) is definitely one of the best faux-meat dishes I've ever had and might fool even the most savvy carnivore. Con: not as spicy as I would've hoped. The veggie prawns, however, are not quite as convincing as the faux meat...If you eat shrimp, avoid them (they remind me of gelatin). If you are a veg-head, give em' a shot! That being said, the Vietnam spicy shrimp and broccoli with basil and jalapenos ($10.50 dinner) offered just the kick I was looking for! Pro: it was packed with large shrimp (unlike a lot of Chinese takeout that tends to disappoint once one realizes there really were only three shrimp in the whole container). My favorite so far: the spinach and bean curd soup (and yes, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it)! It is uncomplicated, comforting, and chalked full of spinach and thin slices of tofu in a mild yet tasty clear broth. Absolute perfection and great if you're fighting a cold. It gets better: it's only $2.50 for a pretty decent container! The portions are large and cheap (about $6.50-8 for lunch and $8.50-12 for dinner) Another upside: despite being a carryout spot, they actually have several tables inside and a nice, but still small, raised outdoor seating area that is actually quite cute.

Szechuan eggplant and steamed dumplings
Vivian R.

Whenever I try a Chinese restaurant for the first time I order the same set of anchor dishes to test if I'll return: braised eggplant, Szechuan string beans, and vegetables with tofu. I enjoyed everything I ordered from Chen's, and will be back to try more of the menu. Dishes were flavorful but not overly sauced; some dishes use more oil than others but it was all appropriate for the style of cooking. I was especially excited to see an extensive vegetarian menu including mock meat options - I usually have to go to Rockville for this! I ordered for pick up and my food was packaged nicely and right on time, piping hot still when I returned home. The restaurant space is small, just a few tables inside and outside that would seat 2-3 people. The woman I picked up my food from was very sweet and noticed that I was new to the restaurant, which was a lovely personal touch. Food 4, Service 4, Ambiance 3

A little outside seating!

Not bad at all...I told them I wanted a lot of green veggies and chicken with spicey sauce. The chicken tastes real and they did all of this for $7.75 including tax with a bottled water! nice

Would not recommend the Pad Thai
Rich T.

I am granting Chen's three stars solely due to one dish: their Pad Thai. Now I am no connoisseur of Pad Thai but the mediocrity of this dish was heavily apparent. Heavily. The noodles were dry and generally flavorless. I needed an ample dosage of Sriracha just to make them edible. What is more, the noodles had a strong fish flavor, implying they put a little too much fish sauce in their Pad Thai recipe. This comment may be out of left field but their kitchen also looked abhorrently dirty. I nearly lost my appetite from one glance inside of the kitchen. I am not sure whether or not I will come back to Chen's but I know one thing for sure: do not get their Pad Thai.

Singapore noodles

I can't speak to all of the food, however the Singapore noodles and egg rolls were sub par in taste. Both dishes were nearly tasteless and lacked seasoning and vegetables.

Great quality take out. I always get my usual order of sesame chicken. There are tables for eating and waiting.

I am not loving my take out chicken pad thai. It lacks flavor and yet the fish sauce tastes too fishy. Not sure I would try them again.

However, my opinion changed when my wife and I dined in the restaurant for the first time. It will not be our last. What drove me to dine in was the ambience I observed when I picked up a previous takeout order. It was a really nice place, with neat décor, plenty of seating, and a serving staff that was obviously attentive. This remained my impression when we came here for the first time recently. Contrary to our takeout orders, the food blew us away when it was fresh from the kitchen. Perhaps this was because we ordered different things, or perhaps because what we ordered to-go (e.g., fried eggplant, Szechuan chicken) did not travel well. Whatever the case, but this was some of the best Chinese food we have eaten in a long time. For appetizers we ordered the puffy scallion pancake, which was fun to tear and share, and came with some very nice curry sauce or dipping. We also ordered the pork soup dumplings, which were everything you could want in a soup dumpling - piping hot with a warm, soul-soothing broth inside (but which does not travel particularly well in takeout orders). For our entrees, my wife ordered the duck fried rice. I am not the biggest fan of fried rice, but this was some of the best I ever had. The duck favor was prominent but not overwhelming and the pineapple was the best integrated I have ever experienced in a savory dish. I had leftover for lunch today and it was still quite good. I ordered the fish in chili oil, a bubbling, soupy dish covered in peppers. This was phenomenal, an excellent balance of heat, numbing, and flavor. And there was plenty of fish in the dish, as well. I will be hard pressed not to order this every time we come here in the future. We split the fried green beans (solid - crisp and well spiced), which I ate for breakfast over rice with some of the leftover fish. Again, it was still good. As my previous comments imply, serving sizes are large.

In person we ordered Mongolian beef, chili fish, cumin lamb, Szechuan chicken, a crispy pork belly dish that I can't remember the exact name, and kids broccoli fried shrimp. Loved everything but especially pleasantly surprised by the crispy pork belly dish. These dishes were way too spicy for me, should have heeded the warning when there are 3 chili symbols on the menu: chili fish, szechuan chicken.

Noodle dish portions are big and good for sharing so you can get the other side dishes like the eggplant and the kebabs (YUM). The eggplant is juicy, garlicky, and beautifully charred. One comment is that there is not much protein in the stir fried noodles which is okay since it leaves more room for the kebab! The interior and service is relaxed and casual. They have QR code menus which I wish they had a physical menu as well since service is spotty in there. Although they provide wifi, it feels like an extra step. One quick note: when I came with a group of six, gratuity was automatically added. I didn't realize and added an extra tip on top through the digital receipt, so just something to be mindful of if you're dining with a larger party.

We've since ordered multiple times, but the quality of the crispy beef has been inconsistent. Sometimes it scores a five, while other times it dips to a three, likely due to different chefs preparing the dish. I noticed this firsthand during my last visit when I picked up my order. Though I was excited to indulge in the crispy beef again, it turned out a bit tougher than usual. No service issues. Restaurant is clean and inviting. I'd love for TNR to refine this dish so it maintains its deliciousness consistently, as I truly enjoy it and will definitely be back for more.

If a place delivers strong execution, quality flavors, and exceeds expectations for what it is trying to be, that earns a top rating from me. Chili Wok did exactly that. We recently visited Alexandria and had an excellent meal from start to finish. Everything we ordered was flavorful, well prepared, and arrived tasting fresh and intentional. The soup dumplings were a standout. The wrappers held together nicely, the filling was savory and juicy, and each bite had that satisfying burst of broth you hope for when ordering them. The fried rice was also very well done. It had great wok flavor, proper texture, and did not feel greasy or heavy, which is where many places miss the mark. The sweet and sour ribs were another highlight. They had a great balance of sweetness and tang, with tender meat and enough texture to keep them interesting. A dish that can sometimes feel one note was handled really well here. Beyond the food, the overall experience was strong. When every dish lands and nothing disappoints, that says a lot about the consistency of the kitchen. Overall, Chili Wok delivered exactly what I hope for in this category: flavorful food, solid technique, and an enjoyable dining experience. Easy 5 stars, and I would gladly return.
