As a huge fan of crispy beef, I've often turned to TNR Café for my fix. Months ago, my friends and I decided to order from there on a Friday, enjoying delicious Chinese food while watching a movie. We've since ordered multiple times, but the quality of the crispy beef has been inconsistent. Sometimes it scores a five, while other times it dips to a three, likely due to different chefs preparing the dish. I noticed this firsthand during my last visit when I picked up my order. Though I was excited to indulge in the crispy beef again, it turned out a bit tougher than usual. No service issues. Restaurant is clean and inviting. I moved to Arlington and August and I've been looking for a go-to Chinese takeout place. Normally I DD from New Big Wong in DC but today I finally found a place in Arlington I love and glad it's not far from home. TNR Cafe is the ideal Chinese takeout in Arlington. Located in Courthouse near the Taco Bell Cantina and the Four Courts is TNR. I ordered beef and broccoli (came with white rice), pan-fried dumplings, and shrimp and chicken egg rolls. The beef and broccoli was great. Nice fresh slices of beef with the cooked perfectly broccoli and plenty of sauce to drizzle on my white rice. The dumpling were meh. When two other Chinese people approve a spot, that's when you know it hits. Consider this a peer-reviewed experience. We got the Caramelized Pork Belly, Black Pepper Beef, and Guo Ba Rou for three people. And yes, it came with rice (thank god, because a Chinese restaurant with no rice is forbidden). Oh my god. Every dish was perfection. The caramelized pork belly just melted in my mouth and was soooo soft. The Guo Ba Rou was crispy but soft in the inside. Perfection. I'm still thinking about it, which says everything. Easily top 3 in the NOVA area for me. Service was great too. Late night last minute diners here; they were so kind and the food recommendations and the drinks were outstanding. Ivan, our server and his colleagues and even the chef were warm and enthusiastic; try this, have this; it took me back to Kamerbooks and The Afterwords Cafe late night in DuPont Circle in the 90's. This will be our new Afterwords maybe we can convince them to stay open late. UberEats order I called the restaurant before placing my order to get clarity on how I should substitute an item before ordering. The person who answered the phone was very helpful and spoke calmly as she guided me through the order. The crispy beef was INCREDIBLE! By far one of the BEST I've ever had. It comes with a kick of spice so after a few moments spent wiping your watering eyes lol prepare to be whisked away by the beautiful flavors throughout this dish. I ordered mines with a side of brown rice, which was an additional $4, and eh, wasn't my favorite twist on a traditional side because there was some sort of bean flavor added and at first I thought that my rice was spoiled until I realized that there was an added flavor to the rice. I'd probably stick to white rice next time or make my own brown rice at home. However, the crispy beef was everything! Huge strips of beef, perfectly fried. This rating is just for their boba! I came on a weekend and picked up a lychee boba. The lychee tea on it's own was AMAZING, very authentic and fresh made with high-quality ingredients. The boba was just okay, depending on how you like it. For me, I like soft and chewy, and their boba was more hard and chewy. They gave me the boba within 7 minutes, which is great for a restaurant! This is one of the best Chinese restaurants I have been to! The menu designs needs some developing because I can see they had some issues of writing Chinese script which is read up down and English script which is read side to side, so in trying to incorporate both readings for accessibility reasons, they will have you flipping the menu up and side since the ingredient list is less common it requires a more through read so you know what you're ordering. But my comment is mostly made for audiences who uncommonly encounter Chinese cuisine and actually need to read the full description. Every dish we ordered was immaculate and well prepared. Each protein was individually prepared such as cubed or velveted, so there is a special attention to how to treat each protein for its most optimal texture that is very indicative with Chinese-style cooking. The dishes were generously portioned as a lot of dishes are made family style. The flavors of each dish were so addictive, the garlic really comes through since each dish is made to order so there is a wonderful fragrance that comes from each dish. The menu is also impressively large and diverse, alongside their plating for each dish so it felt unique to receive a dish that was conceived in its own style. A standout dish for us was the Beef in Spicy Broth, it is very familiar to hot pot with all the various toppings and broth, but it had a great depth of flavor witch what I think were fermented black beans. It really allows you to explore a diverse amount of dishes with their own distinct identity through flavor profile or technique of preparation. Had a brilliant time, the booth style seating is comfortable, and its at a wonderful price point considering the quality is superb. Want to go again and explore other dishes! read more

The pan fried dumplings were chewy and crisp just like I like them and the filling was very flavorful. One of my favorites of the night. The shrimp wontons were crisp and full of shrimp. Would definitely get them again I just wish they were a little larger or they gave you more for the price. The beef chow foon was lacking flavor. Not much else to say about it but it was a good sized portion at least. The salt and pepper shrimp had great flavor. I don't think I'd get it again for takeout because it was soggy by the time I got home but it would probably be even better if you ate it at the restaurant. A bit on the pricey side for Chinese food (crispy beef as $19.5, general tso was $18.5 (extra $2 for white meat)). Portion sizes were good, I thought the amount of rice was fine, but I could see it wouldn't be enough for some. The flavor was solid in both dishes, spice level was perfect for me (got crispy beef extra spicy). The crispy beef had a perfect crispy texture and I thought the vegetables were perfect as well. The meat was great quality for both dishes. My only critique would be for a bit less sauce. The crispy beef was fine since it's a thinner sauce, but the general tso's was just coated and dripping in it. I think if we did carry out if might get soggy. Overall would return again for sure. Easy pick up service (ordered on UberEats for self pick up). Well packaged and delicious dishes as usual (they have pineapple fried rice, a unique offering). They are very popular (see my photo of that huge table just for pick up bags). Lots of people dining inside. They prepared my order relatively efficiently (I arrived and waited for a little while, and they brought my bags out). Upon walking in there's a piano! TNR has been consistently awarded The Best Restaurant Arlington for Chinese food these past few years, so I knew this was going to be a nice experience. Continue to be disappointed .. I've given TNR many chances but this weekend was the last draw as their food made me sick. Sure I was willing to overlook when the delivery drivers wouldn't bring the food up to an apartment despite a nice pre-given tip or the many times I paid extra for a side of fried rice, just to get white rice. Now for delivery they have essentially raised their already high prices by 10% as they are charging a 10% delivery fee, which is just nuts. It used to be free ... but even a flat fee is fair. The more you order, the more you pay, which is a dumb business decision. But worst of all, the sesame chicken (sub white meat) I got tasted off and the breading was barely holding on. It looked terrible, but I I still ate it and I regret that choice as I was sick the next day. TNR - you used to have promise but too many issues, now a 10% across the board price hike for delivery and making me sick mean I'll never order again. As other reviews have mentioned, service is a little slow, they don't seem to have many people working on on the weekends. The menu is pretty typical American Chinese food. Portion sizes are reasonable as is the price for the food, averaging about $16/entree . Quality good. No real complaints but nothing really stood out. I ordered an alcoholic drink, something I rarely do, but didn't find that it had much alcohol. The drinks are a bit overpriced so won't be doing that again. One slight annoyance: Hard to know what some things on the menu are referring to. For example: chicken casserole. There are no descriptions for anything so you're left to Google menu items. For a "casserole" it should give a description of what is in that casserole. The cabbage was SPICY. I wanted to get the General Tsos Chicken, but the server shook their head that it was not a good choice. That's unfortunate. I did like the rice and lo mein. So for one person, no appetizer, it came to about $45. I wish I had not gotten the alcohol but live and learn. read more

This restaurant is located in the Arlington, Virginia courts area. The area seemed hip and had a good vibe on that Thursday evening.
