We want to Karaoke night for our friend's birthday. There were 8 of us total. Four arrived early and ate dinner. Four of us arrived as karaoke started. They were not able to accommodate 8. Update: Chens has reopened for pick up orders starting at 11am. I got mine yesterday and it was hot ready and exceptional. Thank you Chens. All the food here is very solid, you really can't go wrong. I like their Rangoon's, dumplings, and chicken fingers. The staff also gave us a complimentary order of their chicken meat loaf to try (tasty). The specialty drinks are solid, fairly priced and if you don't want to be in the noisy bar area the dining area is always well kept. read more

This is by far the second to worst American Chinese food I ever had. My husband was craving for Chinese food and we just went in here after watching a show at Stockbridge theater...also, nothing else was open. I didn't have much faith in the food other than ordering the typical Poo Poo platter and the Peking dumplings which weren't horrible. We had the fried green beans which were ok but more on the salty side, soaked in soy sauce... What do you expect? Then there was this incredibly disgusting Chinese fried noodles mixed with chicken and pork in probably frozen vegetables. It was in this really nasty brown sauce which was probably mixed in with Hoisin and god-knows-what but was really salty and really just bad. We told the waitress to go ahead and remove it and she seemed really concerned and asked if we wanted anything else but we were so full that we didn't want to have anything else. But I explained that it had a really strange taste and I asked her if she liked it. She says not so much ... so why the hell would you recommend it? It gets better when the bill came she explained that she only charged us half price because there was nothing wrong with the house sauce. Are you kidding me? I told her that you shouldn't be charging at us at all and she got a little nervous and defensive when I said that we're nice people but you can't charge us for something we didn't like and eat. What the point of asking us how everything went if you're not going to accommodate us? I said we plan on coming back. She said that doesn't matter it's just our policy. What kind of f*****-up policy charges for something that was totally heinous and resembled dog barf? What about customer service policy? I said you better talk to your manager or I will because this is not right. We had one bite and you should have told us you were going to charge anyway. If that was the case, I would have ordered something else to bring home. Anyway I stood my ground of not paying the nasty dish and she said she's going to talk to the manager and I was just thinking that is one f***** up manager and server. I felt really bad for her because at first, she was really nice and seemed to want to please us but I really believe that her managers are tyrants so either she is really scared of them or she's related to them which explains her lack of training. I was going to tip her 25% but since I was pissed off because she didn't handle herself well, she just got the typical 15%. Please note , don't piss clients off especially if they pay 25 - 30% tip for really good customer service. Oh, Saturday night is karaoke night. It was packed with drunk people at the bar. I've given this restaurant, many tries, and over the last two years for the quality of the food quality has gone downhill. The service has always been excellent. The people very friendly. I've tried the steak on a stick. It's extremely expensive and the quality is poor; chicken fingers delicious but they're a little salty. The rice has gone from good to terrible; chicken fried rice was poor quality, pork fried rice the week before was poor quality. I want this place to have great Asian cuisine similar to sushi time where the food is consistently delicious and high-quality. We've been to Chens a few times in the past few months. Ashley on Sundays is awesome, she knows the menu in and out & answered our questions quick & efficiently We recently met the new bartender on a random Monday afternoon off from work. She introduced herself as Michelle and said she was new. She couldn't have been more attentive or personable. We wouldn't have known she was new, service was great. Food was so good (we are a bit picky) and the girls and kitchen handled everything without a glitch. We will definitely be back and hope the same ladies are working! . My husband and I have been living in Derry for about 3 years now but we've never tried Chen's. We actually ordered take out for the first time on New Year's Eve, honestly because there weren't many options for take out, AND we waited until late to even think about ordering something. I have been avoiding this place because of the overall negative reviews, and I wasn't expecting much to be frank. My husband ordered the pu pu platter with a side of pork fried rice. I just got the hot and sour soup for myself because I don't really eat the rest. When he got home with the food and opened everything it looked legit, seemed fresh. My husband was very pleasantly surprised with the food, he pretty much enjoyed all of it. I sampled some of his and I thought it was tasty. The price tag was very on point with the amount of food received. The soup had a great spice/heat level, good flavor, but it was lacking in overall ingredients. Not the best hot and sour soup ever, if there were additional components to the soup it would have been delish. Overall I think my husband and I would order from them again. read more

New to Derry, we've been trying all the local restaurants to find our favorites. Earlier this week I had a craving for Chicken Kung Pao and decided to give Chen's a try. They did not disappoint. The Chicken Kung Pao was delicious! Since it was our first time, we got a variety of things to try besides the Chicken Kung Pao - Peking Raviolis (fried), Pork Fried Rice, Mongolian Beef, and General Tso's Chicken. No complaints whatsoever. The food was all cooked to order, fresh, tasty, and huge portions. Our family all had leftovers to take home for a second meal. Our waitress who'd been with Chen's for 15 years was terrific. She made great suggestions and the service was quick and friendly. Sorry I can't remember her name, but she is the one who explained that each meal is cooked to order, not simply warmed up from a large batch, so next time if there is anything special we want (no vegetables, extra sauce, light on the hot spices, etc.) all we have to do is ask. To me that is awesome to know since I'm picky about which vegetables I like and while I like a little heat (spice), I don't like it so hot & spicy that I can't enjoy it. For those looking for information about noise and ambiance - we sat in the dining room (not the bar area) since our teen daughter was with us. It was a Tuesday night so it was pretty quiet which I appreciate these days. From what I could see from where we sat in the dining room, it's a bit worn and dated, but clean. Fine for family dining, casual dress, etc. The restaurant followed all social distancing and cleanliness guidelines and I felt very comfortable eating in the restaurant. Given all of that, I will definitely be going back to Chen's to try out more of our favorite dishes to see how they stand up... Thank you Chen's for a great dining experience. Okay, I'm driving through Derry and I wanted some Chinese food, so I stopped at Chen's, located on the corner of Route 102 at Hoodkroft Drive west of the traffic circle, for a Wednesday night dinner. Upon entering the restaurant (house), I see the cocktail lounge in the left room and the main dining room in the right room, separated by a stairway (up to the restrooms). I was seated in the main dining room (it was just me here). The walls in the dining room had Chinese art and framed photos of China including the Great Wall. The table was a shiny polished smooth solid wood with burgundy booth seating and paper placemats with local advertisements and silverware (no chopsticks). The menu has over 140 Chinese dishes (Szechuan, Cantonese, & Mandarin) and special lunch and dinner plates which include pork fried rice and soup (dine in only). There was some soft music (Delilah Show) playing in the background. The waitress came over promptly and I ordered a pot of hot tea and a dinner plate with Pork Lo Mein, 2 Chicken Teriyaki sticks, 4 Crab Rangoons, 1 Egg Roll, Pork Fried Rice and Hot & Sour Soup ($8.25). The soup and hot tea came out quickly. The soup was very sweet and very spicy. The hot tea was good. My dinner came out hot five minutes later on a generous plate with a side of duck sauce. I was also given a piece of crispy meat roll "complements of the house." Sweeeet!!! The meat roll was tasty. The chicken teriyakis were juicy and tender dipping into the duck sauce. The crab rangoons and pork egg roll were typical good fare. The pork lo mein and pork fried rice were a bit salty (soy sauce) with pork strips and pork cubes, but tasty. During my meal, two young men walked in and sat at another table in the dining room. The young men ordered some beer and my waitress asked them for ID. One of them presented his driver's license and she told him she couldn't serve him because he was 18. She asked if he wanted something else and the two men said they were all set and left the place. From what I heard and saw, that looked like an underage drinking police sting (or compliance check) and if it was indeed a sting, then Chen's passed that test with flying colors, by not serving alcohol to people under 21. I couldn't finish my meal, so my waitress boxed up the rest of my meal at the table and left the check and a fortune cookie. Overall, the food was a good value and tasty and the service was quick, friendly and inviting. Kudos to my waitress for being trained properly and following the NH drinking laws. read more

Chen's is a regular restaurant for my girlfriend and I, we visit at least once a month and often bring guests here. The food is fantastic no matter what you order. I often get the boneless spare ribs, beef or chicken teriyaki (the beef is better but they're both very good), lo mein, and/or crispy sesame chicken. The crispy sesame chicken is very yummy. Now for why I can't rate them five stars. The hot and sour soup is very hit or miss. It's obvious that they make it fresh daily, but it seems that each chef in the back makes it differently. Sometimes it's sweet, peppery, and hot (and when it is it's among the best hot and sour soups anywhere), other times it seems to be overly sweet or lukewarm. Additionally, the service is nearly always a little lax. The waiters check up on you very seldomly so you may find yourself impatiently hoping they'll come by and fill up your drink. I highly recommend getting two beverage glasses. The wait staff is friendly, but sometimes it feels like they have something better to do than see if you need anything. read more

The worst Chinese food I have ever had. I really wish there were negative stars. I just moved right down the street from here and I'd found so far only below average Chinese food in Derry and thought I'd knock one more off the list with a try. I got my normal scallion pancakes and house lo mein as I do at any new Chinese place to see if they can do the basics right. The scallion pancakes were under cooked and doughy with an accompanying sauce that may as well have been sweat for how salty it was. The house lo mein which was supposed to contain chicken, shrimp, beef and pork had no chicken or beef and one....yes one shrimp that looked like it was from a Ramen package and about 4 pieces of pork, all gristly and flavorless.The noodles were greasy and absolutely disgusting and I had to literally pour grease from the bottom of the container like you would the water from one of those microwavable veggie steamer bags. Since they only offer one size, I was stuck with a bunch of food I didn't want. I ate about a third that I had to season with soy sauce from my house and a bit of salt, and threw the rest in the trash. It was expensive and the place dirty when I went to pick up my food as well, along with me having to go search for someone since there was no one at the counter. It's absolutely disgusting and I will never, ever eat here again and if you like this place you're a fool. The search continues. read more

When I walked in there was no one around, after a minute or two a very friendly waitress showed me to my seat. I was the only one in the rest. I ordered a diet coke and when she brought it, she also brought a small "chicken meatloaf" on the house. It was a flat chicken meatloaf about .25-.50 inches thick and about 4" around. It was very tasty. I ordered an L8 and one go roll. When the food came it the presentation was ok and the food was average. It wasn't the best Chinese food I've ever had but it certainly wasn't the worst. The waitress was slow to bring drink refills or come back and ask if it was ok. It's really hit or miss. We've been here probably a half-dozen times in the two years we've lived in Derry. Typical local Chinese restaurant - decent food, friendly service, scorpion bowls, big portions, plenty to take home for a second meal. It's in an old house and needs a facelift, but it's the local watering hole so I try to focus on tasty and friendly. Usually it nails these requirements, but last night the scorpion bowl was so strong it was undrinkable, the waitress was surly, and the bar sounded like a brawl was about to break out. This place makes quality mixed drinks, the bar staff is always quite friendly, and karaoke night on Saturdays is always a blast. However, the quality of the food could stand to be improved. I found many of the typical appetizer fare you get in a pupu platter to be bland or overcooked and the varies entrees I've tried also left something to be desired. We sat at our table for over 15 minutes in the nearly empty dining room and not one person attended to us. We got up to leave and mentioned it to the hostess, who was still playing on her phone. This is the local skank house, all the vagrants and loose women come here. I don't go there to sit down and eat, although I have. The food is always pretty good, and I'm picky about Americanized Chinese food, they have a great singapore rice noodle, good spare ribs stuff like that. But I can't tell anyone how rangoons are or general gaus or anything. Beef and broccoli was good. As for fried Americanized Chinese mainstays, I am not sure as I don't really eat that stuff. Derry needs sushi IMO. I sat down to eat once and the menus were sticky and the table was dirty and it was virtually empty, except for previously mentioned drunk trash screaming in the bar, doing karaoke. The people working there are okay. Some speak English, some really don't at all. I wonder why they even answer the phone though, it's like they are holding out for the one Chinese guy who calls them or something...? But they also have English speaking people there, so they put them on. Ordering over the phone is laborious but IMO worth it. It's a pretty big place and honestly if you want to get hammered on a summer evening, it's a good place to drink and then get hungry and eat some munchies. read more

Okay people let's cut to the chase, This is going to be an easy review. 20 years ago the place used to be excellent.Now it's a whole different story. One of my visits to the so-called restaurant I was surprised with a big rat running in front of the front door. They have a karaoke night and my advice to the people who sings the karaoke "not to leave their daily job". The food is a surprise, "hit or miss". The rugs are old and dirty makes you wonder if you getting clean food. People are rowdy, you hear them yelling, screaming and swearing at each other. Believe it or not, they have Swingers night. You see the regulars walking in the kitchen with their plates and making their own food. In a decent restaurant, no one allowed to go in the kitchen other than the cook. Spending one hour over there you feel that you are either in Dorchester or Harlem. It is not recommended for families at all especially kids and women. Not sure what gang is running the place now. As I said the place needs major renovation. For example, walking in the front door you see an old arcade machine that hasn't been working in a while and an empty fish tank that became a resident to spiders. The place needs a major overhaul including the people who work there. It's a shame that the place could've been a gold mine if they know it's value. Good luck to anyone who goes there. The beef teriyaki was oddly sweet as were the boneless spear ribs. The chicken fingers were alright; they were cooked through, but could have definitely been fried longer. Both the people I was with said their lunch choices were very good. Huge portions...we all took our food home. Drinks were a bit on the weak side and expensive for what you get. The bathrooms were awful...disgusting and not well kept up. If you don't have to go badly, wait until you can get somewhere clean. If you do use them...bring someone upstairs with you.
