The boneless ribs were so overcooked they were like beef jerky, making them tough to eat. The food quality just isn't what it used to be. To make matters worse, the delivery driver was completely out of control. I waited 15 minutes, then went to the garage with the door open to wait, but after half an hour I went back inside to get the number to call. They told me the driver was there, so I went back outside to find him blaring his horn until he saw me. He claimed he'd called three times and wanted to know why I didn't answer. He was furious. Then my dog slipped out on her retractable leash, and he went off on me yelling & pounding his fist on the storm door glass and asking if I was the only one home. Thankfully, my husband was upstairs, but the whole encounter was really scary. I grabbed my dog and the food and shut the door quickly. I will never have them deliver to my house again. read more

I wanted to love it here. Truly. But it's just not it for me. I got a lunch plate of honey chicken, pork fried rice, crab rangoon and purchased an extra appetizer, boneless spareribs. Let's start with the good. They are very reasonably priced. The staff were very nice and friendly. The portions were decent sized and my order was ready quickly. And that's where it stops. The food was mediocre at best. Nothing really had any flavor to it. But what took me by surprise was the honey chicken. I think my idea of honey chicken and their idea of honey chicken were very different. Anytime I have gotten honey chicken it has been bite sized pieces of battered chicken in a wonderful honey sauce. I never order chicken fingers because I don't like the batter...at all. So I was very disappointed to open my meal and see chicken fingers, covered in a sauce that was already solidified and crystalizing. I threw most of it away, which I rarely do. But as most places, the chicken fingers they used were nearly all batter and barely any chicken....and dry. China Garden is one of the better places to go for Chinese food in the Derry area, takeout or eat-in. I've stopped in here several times for takeout. The place is order at the counter and there's also table seating inside. The temperature inside this restaurant can get very hot, especially during the day when it's hot and sunny outside. I've ordered several of the 20 combination platters offered during lunch ($5.50-$5.95 plus tax), which is served until 3PM and come with choice of pork fried rice or white rice and choice of appetizer (egg roll, crab rangoon, beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, chicken wings, chicken fingers, or boneless spare ribs). The dinner combination platters (after 3PM) are priced at $7.95 plus tax. The food here is very good and cooked to fresh order in the open kitchen. The portions for lunch are good. My favorite combinations are the #11 Lo Mein (Shrimp and Szechuan) and the #16 Baby Shrimp in Garlic Sauce. The lo mein has a good balance of noodles, meats, and vegetables. The shrimp dish has tender shrimp, baby corn, water chestnuts and fresh vegetables (snow peas, broccoli, mushrooms, carrots) in a sweet and mild spicy garlic sauce. The flavors of the food are very fresh. The pork fried rice (light brown color) has a mix of firm rice, tender roast pork, onions, and eggs. The chargrilled chicken teriyaki sticks are my favorite appetizer which are good sized tender boneless chicken and have sweet taste on the outside. The service is friendly and prompt. I will definitely keep coming back here for more great tasting Chinese food! read more

Explained that it was a far sum of money and the person on the phone told me about rising costs. I use to love their boneless spare ribs, but I got two orders recently - October 2022, the the meat was so tough I had to give it to my dog. The second time I ordered, the teriyaki on a stick and the meat was tough and I had to throw it out. I'm not sure if they are buying cheaper meats or what, but no more until they step up their quality. read more

Definitely not one smile in that place. The only reason I ended up there was because my friend from out of town was driving. Normally, would never go there even though I drive by daily. Small chicken lo mein was extremely greasy (but it is American Chinese food so this is expected) and a "salt and pepper shrimp" which they don't have on the menu cost $20+. It ended up being shrimp with broccoli? Not much food, but was OK once every several years for American Chinese food. The hot oil was good and hot mustard is risky! Okay so I don't give many 5 stars. This is only 3 as I'm comparing it to many other Chinese restaurants I've tried. It was not greasy and edible. However I've had better and probably will go somewhere else as I wasn't in love. We like super wok better but gave this a shot. We got : Rice & lomein : huge disappointment, rice was over cooked and we got vegetable, not many vegetables in it. The Lomein flavor was gross. Chicken teriyaki: pretty good, I'm picky with chicken, tasty flavor, my hubby really like it. Again I've had better. Crab Rangoon: not the best, too crunch not enough stuffing. Scallion pancakes: Good, comparable - would recommend Dumplings: good, comparable Boneless spare ribs: very good, not fatty. I agree with Michelle regarding the prices and the portions. China Garden has been our go to take out place for quite a long while and we too supported them during the pandemic, but over the past six months or so the prices have increased and the smaller portions are noticeable and significant. Last time we ordered the General's chicken the container had one layer of small chicken pieces which covered 2/3 of the bottom of the dish (filled not even half way) with the rest of the dish filled with about a cup and a half of broccoli. The hot and soup soup was filled to 3/4 of the container, was watery and did not have the usual amount of veggies and tofu. We like the food but the value is just not there any longer, so we will not be going back. Really disappointing. read more

I went here this weekend for lunch and was pleasantly surprised. The chow mein (or was it lo mein?) was amazing! I got the sesame chicken dinner combo and the sesame chicken was very good (although my cousin thought it was too breaded/fried). They gave me like 5 pounds of food too. I got here last night after work about 15 minutes before they closed and was told I could still order. The heat still was not working 3 weeks after I last came and the staff were dressed in winter coats, I could literally see my breath as I waited for my food. The girl at the counter stood behind the register watching some TV show on her phone, probably because the TV on the wall didn't work, which with the heat seems to be a running theme at this place. As I left, they literally followed out the door right behind me and all jumped in their shared vehicle and were out of the lot before I was. When I got home everything in the PuPu for One was disgusting besides the teryaki, either half cooked or cold, and had obviously been half assed because of the time. If you tell me I can still order close to closing time, the food should be the same as any other time, not reheated leftovers. If it's too late, tell me, and I'll go somewhere else, don't serve me crap so you can pocket an extra few bucks. Now for pocketing a few bucks that night they've lost all the money I would have given them in the future. Between the piss poor service, the busted heat, and the crap food, this place joins the never again list. read more

I have been a customer here for years; I am 100% in support of restaurants and small businesses trying to get back on their feet from COVID-19 and I am fine with supporting price increases, but this places has increased their pricing AND reduced the portion sizes. It is frustrating and embarrassing when you place your typical family order and you come home and their is not enough food for everyone. Chicken fingers; one or two normal and the rest are all nugget sized; beef and chicken teriyake is all shorter pieces and a large rice now comes in a medium container. Recently, China Garden opened in a small strip mall directly in front of the Wal-Mart in Derry. My family has ordered from there four times so far (twice for take-out). Twice we ate there in the dining area, which has 3 tables and a flat screen TV. As of this writing, we have tried combination plates (Teriyaki, boneless ribs, rice, egg rolls), Lo Mein, Hot and Sour soup, baby shrimp in lobster sauce, and Orange beef. All were very good. As the menu indicates, all orders are prepared fresh. The orange beef was especially good, with a good sized portion of meat. The sauce was excellent, and included scallions, szechuan chili peppers and fresh orange peel. The staff is very friendly and prices are very reasonable. There are 20 combination plates to chose from. All but one are $5.95 for lunch and $7.95 for dinner. A PuPu platter is $17, and most of the "Chef's Specials", which include various shrimp, scallop and seafood entrees are between $9,25 and $13.95 (the $13.95 China Garden Delight is the highest priced entree, but includes lobster, shrimp, chicken, pork, beef and scallops). All entrees also include a small container of steamed white rice. I highly recommend that you give China Garden a try. Although there are a handful of Chinese restaurants in the area, I rate them as above average for food, price, and service. I'd give them four stars for the food based on this visit, and may update the rating when I eat here again and have more to go on. I am downgrading the overall score to three stars, however, because they do not heat the restaurant, making it virtually impossible to dine-in (at least during the winter); the staff wear sweatshirts and down vests. read more

Just had take out there for the first time. The food was pretty good and cheap. We ordered General Tso's Chicken, Crab Rangoon, Peking Ravioli, and Vegetable Lo Mein which came to a total of about $30. Our normal restaurant is Super Wok in Londonderry, so let me compare these dishes to Super Wok's. China Garden has the edge for the Peking Ravioli and Vegetable Lo Mein while Super Wok was considerably better for the General's chicken. The crab Rangoon was a tossup as I liked it better from China Garden while my wife liked it better from Super Wok. Portion sizes are smaller at China Garden, but the same meal runs about $10 more at Super Wok. Since the portion sizes are larger at Super Wok though, we usually get another meal for 2 out of it the next day as left overs. Overall, pretty good. For us though, the extra $10 is worth it for Super Wok. read more

However, the amount of filling they're using for the crab rangoons-- it's like a pea sized amount of filling in a huge wonton wrapper--no bueno. Add a little extra guys, the fillings the best part! My husband and I ordered a pupu for 1, vegetable lo mein, and sesame chicken. This is by far the best vegetable lo mein we've had in ages. We were surprised by how generous they were with the vegetables and that there was a good variety. Over all it wasn't too greasy which is a great change of pace. The sesame chicken was naturally sweet but we appreciated that the light batter remained crispy even with the looser sauce. I also have to mention that the steamed rice wasn't gluey and was very fresh--it's the simple things that let you know they care. We weren't very fond of the chicken tenders or fried shrimp, simply because they were heavily battered-but the batter was good. We were also really disappointed with the crab Rangoon. The cream cheese had scallions mixed in which was great but it really lacked the crab (or imitation crab meat). Overall we really really loved the main dishes, but will continue our search for the best Chinese appetizers in the area.
