You know a restaurant is insecure about its service and quality when its administrators respond to negative reviews on Yelp within minutes of its posting, constantly trying to defend themselves rather than admitting they did something wrong. Oh, and not responding to the positive reviews? Not saying thank you? This can only mean one thing: the restaurant hires people to write those five-star reviews just to make themselves look good. How fucking pretentious. Yes I'm using the word "fucking," Chengdu staff. You're in Berkeley, get the fuck over it.
Anyway, this little five-star façade is coming to an end. This place is disgusting. In more ways than one.
Fucking up reservations? Yeah, I can get over it. We got a table. That's fine and dandy. Mediocre food? Whatever. I'm a college student and frankly, I'm not really sure what good food is. Making ramen in an actual pot is pretty fucking gourmet for me. Who knows, maybe the food was amazing and I just couldn't tell.
But shitty service, disrespect, and inability to own up to mistakes? Now that's where we have an issue.
So my group and I get to the restaurant around seven. When we finally get our seats, we order and we don't get our food for an hour. (Wait, no. We got some cold chicken feet within about 30 minutes and, let me tell you, it was quite the spectacle watching my friends eat those. I would never.) I'm a pretty laid back person. I get it. It's a busy night. Everyone in the restaurant needs their food. I'm not trippin'. Basically, my mentality was that as long as we all got our food, I'd be happy.
And then we got a filthy tea cup. And weird bowls for rice that are obviously meant for ingredients (you know, that mise-en-place shit). And then they give one member of our party a styrofoam plate because they ran out of stoneware. And they give us tea with used and abused tea bags (like literally, our tea was really starting to look like dishwater rather than tea real quick). And just to put the cherry on top, it took forever to get our food.
See, I would have been okay with our food being hella late, but then the shitty service happened.
Finally, after this terrible dining experience, which left us all pretty dazed in disgust, two members of our party went up to pay. I'm not even going to try to go into the details of what went down because I'm not exactly sure. All I do know is that my friends tried to tell the cashiers about their terrible experience, and they got extremely defensive, one of them constantly edging forward with his chest out as if he were ready to fight (seriously, one of the employees was holding him back. WHAT. THE. FUCK.), and one of them being very disrespectful and hostile with tone of voice and attitude. These employees can go ahead and try to defend themselves all they want, but there is absolutely NO EXCUSE for arguing with a customer. WE are paying YOU for good food and good service. How dare you have the audacity to yell at a customer with a credit card in hand, ready to pay for the meal? It doesn't matter what the customer is saying, especially when the customer is simply criticizing your restaurant, the customer is always right.
We left this restaurant feeling particularly shitty. Which is pretty counterproductive since this is the start of a new year and we wanted, as a group, to start it off right. Please do know that we will NEVER be coming back to this restaurant and we definitely will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone. Actually, we'll probably completely advise against this place. I'm pretty sure anyone would prefer even Lotus House over this joke of a dining experience. Actually, Lotus House is fucking delicious and, on top of that, the employees aren't rude!!!! Holla.
I understand that sometimes restaurants have bad days. I really do. But disrespect to a PAYING CUSTOMER is a whole other deal. Go ahead and defend yourself with your laughable responses. Go ahead and answer my "questions" (which I have none, by the way). It will only make you look that much weaker as an institution. The most dignified thing to do in this situation, really, is to come to terms with the truth: that you obviously do not know how to handle customers, and that your service is seriously lacking. Just a word of advice, do NOT try to turn this thing around on the customer. I assure you, any and all complaints from customers are rooted in a deficiency in service and business tactics. So please, I implore you, stop embarrassing yourselves, take this one-star review with some dignity, and move forward with your business.
I do hope that the Year of the Horse is as horrifying for your restaurant as this dining experience was for me and my party.
TL;DR: Fucked up reservation. Shitty service. Untimely food delivery. Disrespectful employees. Always blaming the customer for their shitty experiences.
P.S. I can use whatever "fucking" words I want, thank you very much. read more
