Came here on Christmas Day. The place was packed, we waited over an hour for our food, but it was worth it. My mother worked around the corner from this restaurant for years and was a frequent flyer. Staff felt like family and she LOVED the food. She'd always rave "Best Chinese food in Riverside." I'd join her when visiting Riverside as I moved out of state decades ago. Mom retired about 15-years ago and hadn't returned since before the pandemic. Last fall, we decided to go when I visited. The owner-server immediately recognized my mom and remembered her favorite dishes. I was impressed. I added a few of my favorite dishes and we couldn't have been more pleased with our meal. Large servings, piping hot, traditional flavors and textures. The whole shabang. We returned last night, after a year, and were greeted like family. We were, again, enthralled with our dinner. I noticed that the majority of other parties in the restaurant were also frequent flyers and were very friendly with the staff. This was the so bad!!! I gave it the benefit of doubt despite the mixed reviews. I should have known it was going to be bad from the minute I walked in with my family. First off, we were the only people in this place at dinner time (6pm). The server was sitting at a table prepping vegetables (not in the kitchen). Between her checking her phone and peeling back green beans or whatever, she finally looked up to see us there! Now the food... we ordered safe: beef broccoli, honey walnut shrimp, fried rice, lo mein, etc. But the honey walnut shrimp was horrible! No sweetness to it at all, It had a mayonnaise flavor or something! The fried rice was not fried, it looked like they threw some soy sauce on some steamed rice, mixed it up and served it to us! 1st time trying this place. We had a party of 9 and when we called to make reservations for lunch and they asked that we "pre-order" our food before arriving. We all had the lunch specials which came with egg flower soup, an egg roll, fried won ton, steamed or fried rice and your entree. They sat us in the VIP section and had the room to ourselves. 2 waitresses were helping us. Ambiance is old school vibes. Food was tasty. They asked if we were celebrating a special occasion and we told them my birthday. One of the waitresses then came out with a little red envelope and inside was a $5 bill. Sad to say but this is easily the worst Chinese food I have ever had. The food tasted burnt yet had no flavor and the wontons and egg roll tasted old. The restaurant itself leaves alot to be desired, it's very old and messy. The service is what you'd expect at a hole in the wall spot, pretty bad but I was more than willing to look past that if the food was good. The food is always good, consistent, good size portions, the Wor Won Ton soup is one of our families particular favorites. Especially when we are sick. It is our go to feel better remedy.
