I had the Southwest Scramble and my husband had an Andouli Sausage wrap. Both were HUGE portions! We each got two scones with the meal, it was hard to finish it all and we probably could have shared! My friend and I went here at about 10AM for breakfast. This meal was so fabulous! We walked in and were greeted right away and told that there would be about a 20 minute wait but we were welcome to get a drink at the bar. That definitely made us happy while we waited. I got a cherry mimosa (so good I had two!) and my friend got a mimosa flight (grapefruit, orange, and cherry) which was fun! We waited outside it was a little cold to stay outside to eat but they came and got us to sit inside when it was time to eat. I had the Breakfast bowl with potatoes and eggs and hollindaise sauce with fresh vegetables. It was so fresh and delicious! Everyone here was so friendly and the staff was excellent. After spending 20 minutes standing around listening to the staff complain about working there and themasking every couple of minutes what time it was. We left for a friendlier environment. We have been coming to The Chef's Hat for years and loved it. However, that is no longer true. The quality of food has taken a major nosedive. We ate breakfast and it was just average compared to past experiences. My husband went for breakfast the next day. His his food was way over cooked, the eggs were rubber, bacon was burnt. Returned for dinner (hoping it was just a fluke) the last night of our stay. The food was not good. I ordered a burger that was raw in the middle. Food was not seasoned, frankly a frozen dinner would have been a better choice. The manager comped only half of the meal, the waitress felt bad about and offered to pay the other half, which we declined. Will never return to this place again. A couple sitting at the table next to us also were talking about the poor quality of the food. I suggest going to the Sunset Harbor Grill just a few steps away. They have killer pulled pork sandwiches that are amazing!!!! Skip Chef's Hat, there are much better places to eat. read more

A beautiful evening in Ephraim. We sat at the bar while waiting for our table. Good whiskey old fashioned and hearty spinach artichoke appetizer made for a pleasant wait. I wish I had not ordered the beef brisket entree. At first I thought I had been served chopped up bacon, very strange and fatty brisket "chips". The mashed potatoes were good. The green beens were not quite to tender crisp, a bit too much on the raw side. I generally enjoy the restaurant but will not order this meal again. read more

Great place for breakfast in Ephraim. There was no wait as we got there pretty early. All of the staff was very friendly and provided great customer service. We both ordered the Matzke scramble with scones as we saw others with it and it looked great. About 5 minutes after ordering the food arrived, hot and fresh. The scramble with potatoes was delicious as were the scones, would definitely order again. The price was very reasonable for the quality and quantity. As it got nicer outside we watched the patio fill up which over looks the harbor. Great view, service and food, what more could you ask for. read more

Overall, the food was good and we really enjoyed the look and feel of the restaurant - we had some amazing views of the harbor from our outdoor seating. Brunch experience here was not as pleasant as I thought it would be. Starting with the coffee, it tasted burnt and I asked for more coffee later but it all tasted the same. Maybe they just do not have the right coffee machine or the coffee beans are not as good from the coffee i tried. I ordered the waffle and it was a solid experience eating the fresh waffle with powdered sugar and some good butter. My kids ordered the french toast that was alright as well, and my wife had one of their vegetarian egg dishes. Service could have been better, like i did not get a creamer till 15 mins and had to keep asking for coffee...maybe it was the location of our table? Came here on a Sunday for breakfast. A couple of things: there are 2 entrances but where you greet the hostess is only on 1 side - as an out of towner, this was confusing. Then there was a 25-30 minutes wait to be seated (not an uncommon occurrence but I didn't see it referenced in my quick view of other reviews). Lastly, but in my opinion the biggest problem, breakfast stops being served at 11:15. But lunch isn't immediately available at 11:15. We were seated at 11:10 am but could not order any type of lunch menu item. While we were seated, I saw 4 groups of people come in and because they were between breakfast and lunch (still finishing breakfast but couldn't actually eat lunch) they chose to go somewhere else. The food was good, but the manner in which the menu was handled was not good. I would not return again based upon this and this alone. read more

I always liked chefs hats - they're a little goofy-looking. Was a little surprised not to be able to see any chefs wearing their funny hats, though. The interior is comfortable and clean. The outside patio is a great place to dine during nice weather, as you have an unobstructed view of the water. The innkeeper at Lodgings suggested this cafe, as its right next door, and he said that their dinners were top-notch. We only had breakfast there though, & the dishes came with a choice of scone or toast and potatoes or fruit cup. Tips: - Breakfast avg ~10/pp - Scones are YUMMY - last seating for dinner is 8pm Lowdown: - Asparagus Supreme Omelet: pretty tasty except not that much asparagus, and the portabello mushroom was undercooked!! That is a definite faux pas - how easy is it to cook mushrooms and to detect whether or not they're still raw? Come on now... - Egg/Andouille sausage in Spinach Wrap: pretty good - Fruit cup (side): bleh! It's June, and all they had to offer was unripe cantaloupe, unripe honeydew, some ripe pineapples and tasteless tiny blueberries. WTH? So not worth the extra $1 to substitute. - Scones: Best thing there. I had the blueberry and the white chocolate raspberry scones - SO YUMMY. They're not your normal huge, thick and hard scones - they're soft and slightly cake-ier. They're like triangular muffin tops :) Would come back just for those. The Chef's Hat is average overall - would've given 3 stars or even 4 if the fruit cup was decent & if the mushrooms were evenly cooked. It's a promising restaurant, but they have definite room for improvement. Service was friendly, although our server spoke at a startlingly loud volume for 9 in the morning. It was the second (and last) morning of our girls' weekend in Door County. We needed some sustenance. The four of us are terribly indecisive, so our hostess said "here, choose between [other restaurant] and Chef's Hat." Nobody else wanted to decide, so I looked at the menu and decided Chef's Hat fit the bill. We were seated immediately on the patio and given menus and water. The menu was nicely diverse and tempting -- scrambles, wraps, waffles, French toast. A little bit of an upgrade from your standard-issue diner, with lots of fresh veggies in the mix. I went with a "Matzke" scramble that had eggs, bacon, ham, various veggies, pesto and cheese and was served with potatoes and choice of scone or toast. Well geez, when given the choice of fresh scone, get the scone! I chose raspberry white chocolate chip. The scramble was really really tasty, the potatoes were solid, and those scones -- wow. So good. Definitely fresh baked and with a great texture. All of my friends enjoyed their food and scones as well, and we definitely enjoyed the view from the patio. It was a great way to spend a breakfast with awesome food. If you're in the area looking for some food, I definitely recommend it. read more

Chef's Hat Cafe was REALLY good!! I recommend the cinnamon roll above all else! This place is a really cute house in a prime location right on the lake. It's so convenient to see the pier and explore along the shore. We sat outside so the ambiance was incredible!! Our server was really sweet and very knowledgeable about the menu, which was convenient for us! The food we ordered and received was REALLY good. I got a skillet, and the potatoes here are out of this world! Well next to the cinnamon roll, that is! ;) And I added andouille sausage to my skillet, and it took it to a whole new level! My daughter enjoyed her waffle, and there was plenty of food for us to be able to share with my son, who claimed he wasn't hungry. (But ate a ton of our food!) Their breakfasts are out of this world delicious! I have had just about every combo on the menu but anything that they make with their andoullie sausage is amazing! They also have this spicy black bean rye bread this is incredible. I could make a meal out of just that bread. I have never had a bad meal at this place...I've been there for dinner as well and everything is scrumptious. Now if we could just get the city of Ephraim to give up their "dry" rules they would be in business. I thought it was illegal to not serve alchohol in Wisconsin...the city gets an epic fail but this restaurant is still great even without the spirits. read more

We came here for breakfast on a Saturday. They were pretty busy which is always a good sign. The only real downside was the walk up coffee bar was (also) very busy and kind of chaotic so we had to just give up and wait to be seated for coffee. Otherwise it was great! Our waiter was so super nice and helped us figure out what to order. I went a little bonkers and ordered a TON of food. But it was all so yummy I couldn't help myself. I started with hot coco with whipped cream. And YUMMY!! I also had a cinnamon roll which was fabulous! I only wish I had gotten an additional side of frosting- there's never enough frosting!! :) Per our waiters recommendation I ordered the waffle with whipped cream and fresh berries and hot damn was it both pretty to look at and tasty to eat! My husband got like 2 bits of the cinnamon roll (cuz he wasn't quick enough) and the Matzke omelette and he could not stop raving about it! The ingredients were very fresh and the pesto was delightful! It was such an unexpected, unique omelette ingredient but he LOVED it!! We walked in and were immediately greeted and given a table. I ordered tea (Tazo) and my boyfriend ordered coffee - which he said was very good. Lunch: I had some kind of turkey sammie with guac and bacon - it was REALLY good. My boyfriend had the half soup and half sammie combo, and he said the tomato basil soup was "the best he ever had." For my very first review, I would like to take the opportunity to mention one of my all-time favorite breakfasts on the planet. I particularly enjoy one of the "scrambles" when I visit here and they are phenomenal, loaded with lots of ingredients. The choices are as unique as they are varied, but always delicious, especially if you like to spice it up. Kids like the waffles and the fresh fruit is always sweet and juicy, no matter the season. The coffee and baked goods are great too. If you have good weather you really have to try eating outside. Their garden is beautiful as is the view of Ephraim's Eagle Harbor. The service is always paced to my needs whether I am in a hurry or more interested in taking in the view. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the summer season and open for breakfast and lunch on weekends during the winter months. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to the menu for lunch or dinner because I have reserved this restaurant for breakfast visits because they are so good. read more

My husband and I came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. We were greeted warmly by the server and quickly got our drinks. There are only maybe 8-10 tables in the whole restaurant and only one other table seated but a few more came in after we were already there. Their lunch special is half sandwich, soup and chips for $7.99 - can't beat that. The sandwiches are good - but nothing fancy.
