What I didn't know at the time is: (1) they also have NYC locations, including their U.S. flagship 1/2 block from Tonii's, one of my favorite Chinatown cheap eats and (2) Yin Ji Chang Fen's chains origin is in Guangzhou in 1958... and that location still exists! So, it was a must try! Glad we stopped by and would recommend it for a try, especially if you are looking for a convenient bite while on Ste. Catherine Oeste. (Note - Did not get the chance to check out other steamed rice roll places in Montreal, but will definitely do on my next trip.) About the restaurant experience... while they have printed menus, you use the QR code on the table to order, although there was a helpful waiter to assist. We ordered a fresh Shrimp with Chives and a Roasted Duck with Chives Steamed Rice Roll. Peanut sauce needed to be ordered as an extra. They provide complementary hot tea. (You can also order a can of Chinese iced tea.) Yin Ji Chang Fen's rolls were delicious, especially the roast duck! The sauces added make the rolls even more vibrant. Note - Didn't get the chance to check out other Montreal steamed rice roll places, but will definitely do on my next trip. Also at one point back home, will also check out their N.Y. Chinatown location to compare. To add, Congee appears to be another Yan Ji specialty, however it's not something I typically order.

You can have an extremely filling meal under 20CAD if you're willing to wait a bit as there is a queue both outside and for servicing. I found the appeal of this restaurant to be moreso in the flavors than the technique though. (Tom Yum XLB: B) - Impressive flavor profile that has a mild spice with a powerful cilantro note. Really love the uniqueness of this, even though it lacks soup and actual rememory of tom yum. These are double the price of the main series XLB though. (Scallop, Shrimp, Pork XLB: A) - Fantastic combination of filling with whole shrimp and scallop. Although, since it lacks much soup and the skin is quick thick, this is almost closer to a siu mai instead. Nevertheless, 10 pieces at 16CAD is a stellar deal here. (Curry Beef Potsticker: B) - Another unbeatable deal of 12CAD for 12 dumplings; the curry flavor works well for this type of dumpling, and I like the thickness of the connecting lattice. However, I found the beef to be overminced and quite dry. Food: E Presentation: E Price: +1 Atmosphere: -1 Service: E Menu: +1 Insta/Yelp/Beli/TikTok: @amei_eats

Ordered 3 different soup dumplings, that's 30 dumplings for four people. I think we overdid it, but they're really good and they're not heavy. The place is clean, the tables are wiped down after every customer, it's a little more upscale than some of the dim sum joints I've been to in the past.

We have their wonton soup, which you could tell was homemade and fresh, the hot and sour soup, which my partner said wasn't exceptionally flavourful at first, but after eating more, it grew on him and he would absolutely order it again. We had the spring rolls, they were fresh and delicious, exactly what you'd hope for. We tried their fried wontons with peanut sauce, and those were really good. For dumplings, we ordered the lamb and coriander, which were nice, but maybe not enough coriander flavour, the beef and onion, and they hit the spot, and the chicken and curry, which were my favourite of what we had. To finish, we had their sesame balls, and those did not disappoint! I would come back just for them, so good! You could tell that everything was made fresh, with quality ingredients. I can't wait to try other dumpling flavours, and their edamame salad.

Since it was still freezing outside, I decided to have DoorDash deliver it to my room. The food arrived piping hot and still steaming, which felt pretty impressive considering it was about -120°F outside and was cold enough that even pure ethanol was turning into a slushie. :-) I ordered the soup dumplings, peanut butter noodles, peanut butter wontons, and wonton soup. Everything was delicious and, unlike a lot of Chinese takeout, it wasn't overloaded with MSG. The dishes had real flavor, and I was pleasantly surprised by how great everything tasted. Overall, I was very pleased with the meal and would definitely come back the next time I'm in town.

I've made it a habit of travelling to Quebec almost every Christmas with my parents, as it's only a 5 hour drive from Markham, but we ran late this time and this was the only place open past 9pm. The menu here is predominantly dumplings, which for a cold winter day I don't mind at all. For us 3 we had the juicy pork and snow crab, shrimp tom yum, and lamb and coriander xiao long baos. All were excellent for a Christmas Day meal where very few places are open. We also had the beef teriyaki xiao long bao, which unfortunately was not as good as the others. Service was excellent here. Not the best xiao long bao I've ever had, but for a place that's open 365 days a year, I can be assured that I can have quality food on Christmas Day.
