This is the kid of place you need to bring a lot of people because that is whet it is built for, the menu is extensive, and the portions are huge. We puzzled over the menu then ordered our food. We wanted a bottle of cold sake and the waiter brought it in an ice bucket. Nice. We started with the pork dumplings. The dumplings were very goof but came in a hot thick sweet peanut sauce. With a lighter sauce these would have been outstanding. The scallop was huge and had a bunch of stuff on it. There was some good scallop flavor but it was masked with all the stuff that tasted like old oil. The noodle dish was good but also had some old oil flavor coming from somewhere. All the meats and vegetables were nice and fresh but the good sauce I think was the source of the oil. We saw a table next to us had the pork chops and was asked, what are those? So we got that too. The chops were thin bone in with a batter fried then soaked in a vinegar sauce. These would have been good as our only item with a bowl of rice. Our co-eaters there had many good looking things. I would give this a try again but would bring a few more people so we could try more stuff. Total for all that including the sake was $100 Canadian. Not bad!

LOL. Portions are family style so bring a group with you to share. Salt and Pepper Pork Chop - easily the best dish, great crunch and great flavor. Snow peas sautéed with Garlic was clean, fresh and crunchy. Garlic flavor wasn't overly done. Beef Stew over Baby Bok Choy was tender and beefy. The Baby Bok Choy was hidden underneath in my picture, but it was there. There was also beef tendons as well which I always enjoy. Unlike most other cities, there are not a ton of fast food places near the convention center to service the congress attendees. But strangely, while most convention center restaurants are super-packed during a congress, Cuisine Cantonaise is 80 percent empty. There are always tables available. And this is despite the fact that the food on Cuisine Cantonaise is really good. I don't know why this is happening, but I ain't arguing. I ate here five times and was happy each and every time. * * * The cooking is Old School Cantonese. A distinctive feature is that the house is not big on sauces. They like their food plain or with a simple Chinese white sauce. (That nearly invisible stuff that makes the food shiny.) The white sauce is fine. They also do a sweet and sour like sauce that is absolutely excellent. The food you get will be unadorned or with one of those two sauces. There is Chinatown food that captures a first generation of Chinese-Canadian cuisine. It is in the old centers of Chinese residence of the early twentieth century. Cuisine Cantonaise is of this Old School. Canada is enjoying a delightful insurgence of young Chinese techies, professionals, and children of wealthy families back in China. They are young, hip and spend heavily on urban amenities. Their first rate restaurants are out of the traditional Chinatowns, in the new chic neighborhoods where they have apartments. I personally prefer the younger generation's choices in food and restaurants. But I can be induced to go traditional. When a traditional restaurant is near my convention - and it has a lot of seats and is good - count me in. If you are at the Palais, you should count yourself in too.

The bad: General Tao chicken was dry and had no sauce with it. Peanut butter dumplings were not hot and barely had any sauce with them. The experience was disappointing. CCM was a staple of heading out for dinner when we ate Chinese food. Starting off my meal came with a soup so I had selected their hot n sour soup. Flavour was lacking a little of the hot so I requested sriracha to bring up the flavour. Next was the CCM. The serving was done in typical fashion. Fried noodles with a thick somewhat gluey translucent yet tasty sauce. The dish had a generous serving of vegetables and lots of shrimp. Overall it was a good sized lunch portion and I was satisfied. Pricing on their menu is quite inexpensive and they had a good selection. Yelper friend Jason mentioned he wants to come back for their $14.99 AYCE lunch buffet. My comments to him is "I'm trying to eat less food than more food these days". I'm trying to avoid buffets as I have little self control. Usually I leave eating far too much food! Maybe one day we shall come for this. Time will tell and a review update shall be had if this happens. Until then. I shall look to order takeout sometime as these people know real deal Chinese cooking. I asked the guy working there if they were mainland or HK. The shrimp rolls here were okay, the dim sum dumplings were delicious with flavor, juice, and typical dim sum texture. The hot tofu was done well and with the syrup. Staff is friendly here. As has been mentioned elsewhere, it's up a flight of stairs, it opens around 10:30, and the carts start coming around about 10:45. There's also a sort of order and take out counter to the left of the entrance. Menu items can also be ordered inside while dim sum is coming around. The carts come out slowly and increase in number about every 15 minutes or so, and items seem to come out in a predictable order. You're given a small ramekin with a spicy sauce and mustard in it, which for me is sufficient. I don't feel the need for soy sauce for dim sum, nor is it on the table and has to be requested. One thing I liked is that the cost of items appear on the card for each row, so that you can maintain a rough idea of how much your meal has cost so far. The other thing I liked is the atmosphere. It was very friendly and relaxed, and I noticed many of the staff waving to individuals as they entered, probably regulars. While they didn't have necessarily the variety of offerings I've had at other dim sum restaurants, the overall experience was quite enjoyable and worth considering on future visits to Montreal.
