I was at the recent nautical mile festival and found Chef Elvis stand. I have my go to spot for Jerk chicken but I said let me try out a new spot. Staff were lovely to engage with. I took my food to go. I got home to try it out and realized there was no rice. I was a bit confused because it said it comes with plantain and rice. I let that go, luckily I had my own rice. (Although I prefer the Jamaican rice) I tried the Mac and cheese. I was let down. Way too spicy and needed more flavor for me. The chicken was good. I went to grab lunch one afternoon. I had been told about the food at Chef Elvis and wanted to try myself. The place is mostly for takeout so it is nothing special inside. The young woman working the counter was very helpful. I decided on jerk chicken with rice and vegetables. The chicken was nice and juicy, perfectly spiced. A little heat, a little sweet. The rice, with gravy as suggested, was delicious. The vegetables were mostly cabbage with some peas, corn and carrots. The cabbage was sweet and still had some crunch. Last weekend, I was ecstatic to see Chelf Elvis having a food stand at the annual Nautical Mile summer festival. I even saw the man himself, Chef Elvis! I just had to order me a plate of his famous jerk chicken with a side of mac and cheese and fish flitters. Oh my goodness.. everything was super delicious. The ladies cooking the food were super down to earth also and downright funny. I loved their positive energy and enthusiasm. Stopped by Chef Elvis' restaurant on a Saturday afternoon to pick up some takeout. I'm already familiar with the chef because the organization I'm part of has used his catering services, and the food in those settings is usually very flavorful and well done. Unfortunately, my takeout experience didn't quite live up to that standard. When I arrived, they were pretty much out of food -- no Whiting like I had hoped for, and only a few pieces of chicken, some vegetables, and a bit of stew chicken left. I understand that can be a sign of popularity, but it also makes it tough to rely on them if food runs out so early in the evening. What made the experience more disappointing was the lack of a warm greeting. A simple smile or hello goes a long way, especially when customers are coming in to support a business. I try hard to support Black-owned establishments, but when it feels like the staff don't want to be there, it makes it harder to keep coming back. That said, the vegetables were very good, and based on past catering experiences, I know the chef is capable of delivering quality food. I just hope the restaurant side can match that same consistency and customer care in the future. So, the three stars are for the tasty vegetables I was able to purchase. Food is awesome. Got the curry and jerk chicken. Portions were huge and flavorful. The jerk chicken has got a good kick to it. And best of all it was cheap! Like most Jamaican places you come to this place and expect some "red red wine" a staple of Caribbean establishments. Service was quick and short. Meh. The jerk chicken lunch special I had was just OK. The rice wasn't very flavorful, and as others stated the vegetables were kind of tasted like they were frozen. Good jerk chicken. It's juicy enough that it doesn't need sauce. Nice and spicy. The spice isn't overwhelming (at least if you have a tolerance). Big portions. Good prices. I wish jerk pork was available.. been there 2-3 times with no luck. *updated* the curry goat is very good, even better than the jerk. The food here reminds me of my grandmother's cooking. It is delicious, nicely seasoned, a bit oily, and very filling. I had the oxtail. There were a few other dinner options including stew, goat curry, and pasta rasta. The oxtail meat was so tender that it came right off the bone. This is my third time ordering from this place, I'm pleased with the flavor of the food. The jerk chicken had the right amount of spices, not overpowering not under spiced. My opinion may be subjective to my own taste buds. But, I base my opinion on sampling other places in the area serving the same type of Caribbean cuisine, this is the best. The food here is good. My favorite dish is the stew chicken. They give you a nice portion size that can last you for two meals.

I learned about this restaurant from my boss. He said the food was delicious and that I should taste it right away. The first time I tasted their food was for lunch take out. My boss ordered the jerk chicken and I ordered curry chicken. When I opened the take out container I was immediately impressed with the portion. I saw my boss's container and it was busting at the seams and that makes me very happy. I enjoyed my dish very much and I knew I had to try the jerk chicken next time based on seeing what my boss had. On my second visit for lunch take out I made sure to get the jerk chicken and when I opened the container, again I was very happy. The container was filled and such a bargain for such a large lunch portion. I ate it so quickly I wish I had more. The jerk chicken was mildly spicy and very flavorful. I recently found this place on an app called TooGoodToGo! It been 4 visit now and I have not been disappointed . I guess Elvis left the building before I got there, but I definitely met his 3 sisters. And boy can those ladies cook!!! I was getting my hair done and waiting for the deep conditioning mask to take effect when my mom said she wanted something to eat. She pointed to this store which was right across the street. The first thing I did was look at the reviews on Google, which showed a 4.5 star rating...definitely should have come to Yelp first. It seemed good and looked promising with their 4.5 star Google rating. I called first to see if they could deliver it to us, because it was raining and crazy windy outside. When the call was answered, the girl on the other end didn't give a 4.5 star rating in the customer service department. It was more like .5 than a full 1 star rating. It was terrible. I asked if I could place an order for one stew chicken and one Whiting fish. She told me that they don't take orders over the phone, so I asked if they didn't deliver and she said they did and didn't say anything else. So just to clarify, I said, so you don't take orders over the phone...and I kid you not, she asked me, who is this? I was taken aback and instead of responding to her question, I proceeded to ask how I can place an order. She told me that they deliver with Grub Hub. I'm not familiar with using Grub Hub, but I know what it is. Someone else might not. So I said, I have to use an app. She said yes. Nothing else. No explanation, no nothing. She was just assuming that I knew what it was. So I just wanted to get off the phone, because the whole conversation didn't make sense. What she could have said was this "Hi, we actually don't take orders over the phone, but if you would like to order with us, you can go online to GrubHub or visit the app, look for our name and place an order. We would be more than happy to assist you and get your order to you as soon as possible"...or something along those lines. I mean, your customer service can hurt your business tremendously. I told my mom that they didn't deliver and she told me to just go across the street. So I put my hat and coat on and went across the street. One of the first things I saw on the sign were 2 words..."we deliver". Nothing about ordering through Grub Hub and we'll deliver to you or anything. I shook and head and went inside. Surely it must be better. I psyched myself out. When I went inside, someone else was in front of me. I took that time to look at the juices and saw two that looked good. One was the Passion fruit juice and the Sea Moss with Sour Sop. When it was my time to place an order, another lady came in and helped me. I saw on her shirt that she was the manager. She didn't greet me, she just stood their and looked and me and waited, which I took as my cue to order, lol. Smh. I asked how much the juices were and she said the Sour Sop with the Sea Moss was $6 and the Passionfruit was $5. Man, I should've put those juices back and left the food. The fish was on a counter by the wall left slightly uncovered along with the Mac and Cheese. As a food establishment, I don't like to see food uncovered that are not inside of a glass container. With the people behind the counter talking and such, you don't know what could've went in and landed on the food that they're going to serve you. Buuuut, my mama said she wanted it, so I had to get it. The food was reasonably priced. The Whiting, I believe was $7.50 and the Stew Chicken was $6.50. I also ordered 2 dumplings which was 2 for $1. When I tasted the Stew Chicken, which was my order, I instantly was not impressed. I've definitely tasted better. The dumplings were hard to say the least and the dough on the inside tasted as if it was made a several days ago. It was borderline stale. The flavors didn't blend well to me. My mom just ate the fish and the cabbage and left the rice and beans alone. It didn't taste that great to us. The juices were okay. I had the passion fruit and it tasted tangy, not like the passionfruit juice that I've had in the past from other Jamaican restaurants. We decided to check out Chef Elvis on the strength of its reviews. I got a barbecue wings plate. (Unfortunately, the jerk wings were not ready.) On the side were rice and peas topped with oxtail gravy and some vegetable cabbage. Heather got an order of the banana oatmeal porridge, and we split a vegetable patty. The generous portion reminded me immediately of the pot-lucks after those long Sunday services in Caribbean churches. (I've been to many--long story...) The best item was, without a doubt, the oxtail gravy. It was spicy and savory without being too heavy, and it added a lot of character to the entire meal. I could have gone for an oxtail curry; it would have been a real star. As it was, the wings were nicely done, with the meat falling off the bone without feeling overcooked at all. The outside was, in fact, nice and chewy. The sauce, though, was nothing special and could have used some heat. The rice and peas were a little overcooked, and the porridge had an artificial cinnamon taste. Likewise, the patty had a really nice shell, but the filling had a bit of a canned feel. Vegetable cabbage isn't really my thing, but I agree with Tiffany F. that it had a good texture. The main courses were written on a little chalkboard, but the sides were not, so I forgot to ask about plantains--a shame, because we both really like plantains.
