Imperial Diner in Freeport really impressed me from start to finish. The family that runs this place is incredibly warm and welcoming, and you can immediately see why they have so many loyal regulars. They remember customers by name and genuinely make you feel like family. The menu is extensive, but what stood out most was the quality. The Friday shrimp bisque was creamy and loaded with baby shrimp. The chicken and waffle sliders were excellent, and the waffles were so soft and fresh that I honestly didn't even need the maple syrup. The Rise n' Shine Quesadilla was such a great modern breakfast option, packed with eggs, bacon, avocado, black beans, pico de gallo and plenty of cheese. The grilled steak panini was another standout -- the steak was cooked perfectly and was much better than what I'd normally expect from a diner panini. Of course, being at a diner, I had to try something Greek. The gyro wrap was excellent, with thinly sliced, tender and flavorful gyro meat. The biggest surprise for me was the Barolo Braised Short Ribs over whipped potatoes. The portion was huge, the short rib was fork-tender, and the quality honestly felt more like something you'd expect from a full-service restaurant. This was diner food elevated. They also make their desserts in-house downstairs. I tried the individual apple pie and strawberry cheesecake, and I loved that each one was its own little pie instead of just a slice. Both were adorable and delicious. Imperial Diner also has a full bar, curbside pickup and an outdoor patio when the weather is nice. You really don't have to be a "diner person" to enjoy this place. Between the food quality, huge variety and genuinely kind family behind it, Imperial Diner absolutely deserves to be in the conversation with the better diners on Long Island. I visited Long Island a couple of weeks ago to see my elderly mother. She was celebrating her birthday and wanted to have dinner with a very close friend, so I looked for a place to get my own supper. Of course Long Island has lots of diners, but they are all unique, and I would say that based on my experience, Imperial is one of the best. I did not want your typical huge diner meal, which is much too much food, so I went with a nice dinner size Mediterranean Salad. The food was excellent - top quality fresh ingredients, put together beautifully and delicious. I was equally impressed by the service. When I travel to New York, I will often run into people who are not particularly friendly or helpful, including many who work at restaurants. This was not the case at all at Imperial. They were kind, and eager to give me a great experience. For a diner, it was not too noisy, and everything was very clean. Prices were very fair too. The only thing lacking .. and I saw this a lot in New York, was non-alcoholic beer. I cannot drink alcohol, and this is something I really enjoy with my meals. Imperial does have a variety of "Mocktails" .. so there are options for folks like me ..but it would be nice to see some beer options for the growing number of people who either cannot drink, or prefer to avoid alcohol. 8/29/26. Tried some new to me dishes today. Last time I had the Greek roasted chicken, very tasty, but too oily. So I opted for the braised short ribs ($29.45). They were so tender and delicious. Next time I will have them separate the vegetables and potatoes though. Don't sleep on the potato salad!! Chicken parm ($28.95) was surprisingly good. Sauce was flavorful and the penne was cooked perfectly. Ended the meal with wonderful cheesecake ($8). Nice portions. Easily one of my top 3 diners on Long Island. We watched delivery status on computer.The driver did not ring the bell or hand the food to us as requested. The food was left on doorstep. It was lukewarm at best. We ordered a salad with no onions and dressing on the side. The salad came with onions and no dressing. Pasta ordered with butter sauce came with red sauce and could not be used because of allergy. After going to many diners in the area you would wonder why the hell haven't I come here sooner. As first timers here we sat in a comfortable booth and couldn't stop looking at all of the amazing food passing us. It was a clean place and spacious. To start we got some hot chocolates with whipped cream and they were so good. I saw that they had a special for mimosas 2 for 1 and I also got that. Even though this dinner is so close to my house, this is my first time here. There was a short wait but my guest and I were seated exactly during the 10 minute wait period. The diner is much larger than it appeared because there were smaller rooms in every corner making it quieter than one large space. I returned to Imperial Diner after a few month hiatus and had myself a bit of a late breakfast. Even though it was well past noon, they kept my coffee cup filled to the tip with frequent refills, which was awesome and much appreciated. I ordered the breakfast platter with bacon. My overeasy eggs were perfectly cooked and the home fries were just the right amount of golden brown. I even busted out my laptop for about 15-20 minutes after I finished my food and they still kept refilling my coffee. I asked if it was okay and they assured me to take my time and that the laptop wasn't a problem. Talk about neighborly! It's great having such an awesome diner in my backyard. Parking is mostly in the back, but that's not a bad thing. The on the outside, stood out. However, the inside spoke volumes. It was modern on the inside and very clean. With how busy it was I was surprised how clean actually. But I knew, whatever I ordered I would have to wait, so I looked over the desserts as soon as possible. They had a huge selection of desserts to choose from, ice cream, cakes, and pies. I chose the cheesecake because it is my favorite. I knew I would at least get half (I know that's selfish, but it looked so good). I placed the order and then waited a bit. Finally I took it and left. When I presented it, she was excited. But not more than me, because I did get half. I'm happy to report, it was delicious! The strawberry glaze was incredible, the cheesecake was fluffy and cool, and the base tasted like gram cracker. Went with my family to celebrate a few birthdays over brunch. First let's start with the excellent service. We walked in Saturday afternoon around 12:30 and were sat right away. My Dad is in a wheelchair and they were very accommodating and made it easy for us to get him in. They gave us a big table that was connected to a booth so everyone was comfortable and he was able to participate and be part of the day. Our waiter couldn't have been nicer. He was attentive and friendly, checking on us throughout the meal. We had a 7 year old with us who could get restless, and the waiter was so patient with him. We had a great chat about spending time with family and how important that is. The food - the brunch menu is huge with plenty of options for everyone. They have a '2 for 1' brunch cocktail special, so my sister and I shared the mimosa (she was driving). In addition to the brunch menu, they also have a regular menu with all the diner options. There was a kid menu which seemed like a steal. My nephew got pancakes with bacon, eggs, ham, a drink - all for $10! I had the Chicken & Waffles Benny which was really good. Buttermilk Battered Boneless Chicken, Two Mini Waffles, Two Poached Eggs, and Hollandaise. A little sweet, a little salty! My brother in law got the breakfast burrito which was massive (pic doesn't do it justice). We all enjoy the food and left stuffed. The manager popped by to check on us and see how everything was going. Nice touch! Prices are about average with most entrees being about $18-20. One minor nitpick - I love homefries, but the ones served here seem like they are from a bag in the frozen food section. Looks like a great place for groups & what a menu! Server was very prompt to our table and very quick with drinks. Cousin went with a benedict dish, while I went with their Reuben. (I judge most sandwich/diners by their Reuben.) Food came out quickly, perfect temp and on separate plates so nothing ran together. The macaroni salad side I had was SO much like my mother's, I scarfed it down. Slaw was on the side and tasty. The Reuben itself was very large, bread perfect, but I did order an extra side of their Russian dressing (like 1000 Island other places) because it was lost in the meat. (I took a picture, but the latest Apple upgrade ate all but 1 of my NY pics...) Getting a to go box was a little slow because business had picked up by the time we were leaving. My dad always comes here and took me to try it. The diner itself is really nice; bright lights, a full bar, comfy seats with booths, and three TVs with sports and news going. They also have a gelato bar for the sweet tooth people and the kiddos . Don't worry there is also a big parking lot in back, which is good because parking on Merrick Rd is a joke. Our waitress was nice, but super slow. It might have had something to do with the amount of tables she had with running the bar. But we were waiting on drinks and our sides for about 10 minutes. Not to sound rude but her other tables seemed to be getting help just fine. Now on to the food! I got the lamb and beef gyro. It was filled with meat which was seasoned perfectly. There was the right amount of feta, tzatziki sauce, and cucumber. My dad got his usual go to, the infamous turkey burger. Which he said was "Good like always". I ended it all with a piece of the dolce de Leche cheesecake. Wow! is all I have to say it was so decadent. I had to bring half of it home. So all in all, the back of house people got it! The next time, I tried the steak sandwich, which was also overcooked, bland and barely had any steak on it. The desserts always look tempting, though.
