    Entrance to Chef Charlotte's Confections.
    Scott B.

Drove from Miami up to Savannah for the weekend and stopped into Chef Charlotte's Confections for pastries on Saturday morning. I had seen on her website that she had some gluten-free items, but when my wife (who has Celiac Disease) saw the variety of items on display, she was flabbergasted. We ended up purchasing about $40 dollars worth of items to take back with us, and now that some time has passed and my wife has had an opportunity to sample several of them, she can't wait for us to return to Savannah. She pronounced the confections the best that she's ever tasted. They were so good, in fact, that she said it was hard to believe that they didn't have flour in them. In addition to the pastries (see photos below), my wife also purchased a gluten-free chicken pot pie that my wife also said was delicious. Chef Charlotte's is hidden away in the back of Mercer Plaza, so you really have to know it is there and seek it out. And boy, will you be happy that you did!

This is raspberry chocolate bar and a rosemary Carmel pecan pie .

Makes Gf products in the morning first thing. She is very aware of celiac needs. They are the kindest ladies that have worked hard to get their knowledge. They also offer custom orders and can order ahead of time.

Great Gluten Free options here! And REAL Meringues!!! Love these. They are phenomenal and don't taste anything like store bought. (Which face it, are really just oversized cereal marshmallows in disguise. Blech.) The quiche selection is fantastic, varied, and some are GF. The GF Ginger cookies are amazing, as are many of the cakes. Love the Ghirardelli cake. Soooo GF, it's flourless. A note about the cakes: They are old school. None of that extra fancy frosting to launch you into a diabetic coma, nonsense. Simple, delicious, beautiful. In a world that revolved around everyone trying to be "Cake Boss" this is a wonderful and welcoming comfort of home style. Because it's what's on the inside that counts, and some days that's all you need. Also, chicken salad. Don't even question it. Buy this, put it your belly. Thank me later.

I need to try a cinnamon roll! They were out when I went.

I love finding hidden places like this. I do mean hidden because I was specifically looking for this place and I had trouble finding it. You have to go to Mercer Plaza, which at first I thought was just a regular strip mall. You actually have to go inside a general entrance and then walk to the back of the building. Next to a fountain you'll find Chef Charlotte. I found her to be friendly and engaging. She has a small place but there are some tables and she provides free WiFi. I thought the crumb cake I got was excellent. It was moist and there was a layer of apple, which is something I haven't had before in a crumb cake. My peanut butter cookie was ok but I'll probably try another flavor next time. I was disappointed that she was out of cinnamon rolls before 11am but that gives me something to look forward to for my next visit. When I was paying I spotted a Square reader and asked if she accepted Apple Pay. She wasn't sure but we tried it and it worked. Score one for Chef Charlotte. Her hours seem to be lunch only but her pastries are also sold at Friendship Coffee Company across the street. They stay open later.

Open only until 2:00 PM, if you're looking for breakfast, brunch or lunch, this is the place to be. Arriving at just about noon, the place was packed, but not unpleasantly so, with customers that quickly moved through the ordering process, past the register, and to the ample seating, of their own choosing (with limited outdoor seating available; but not preferable at the time, due to the spotty showers that also choose to attend). Beverages are provided as payment is being made, leaving no thirst unquenched. Needless to say, seating is immediate. With a cup of rich, flavorful, house blend coffee in hand, my daughter, Son in Law, and I found a seat with a great view of the market activities happening outside only moments before our meals were served. The Italian Panini, chock full of succulent mildly spicy meats and lettuce, covered proportionately with dressing (yes, I was given my own bite size sample) , was my daughter's choice; a visually appealing (although not personally sampled) breakfast platter was the pick of the day for my Son in Law; and, Salmon BLT, composed of one thick, juicy piece of salmon, bursting with flavor, accented by a slice of smokey bacon atop a crisp bed of lettuce, slathered in a mild, but tasty, mustard based sauce, between two halves of a soft , flakey, croissant that more than rivaled the size of an average hamburger bun, was my choice. It did not disappoint. At just under $45.00, before tip, all of this seemed like a bargain. If there could be a downside to this experience, and I would say there couldn't be, it would be that, when visiting Savanah, choosing the place to eat jus became a bit more difficult, with Goose Feathers now in contention.

Unfortunately, my experience last night left a bad taste in my mouth. We were seated in the lower dining room. Everything was going well with good service and delicious drinks... and then I spotted a cockroach crawling under our table. Of course, we are in the south & I am willing to overlook the odd roach here and there. However, when a second one emerged from the hallway, my confidence that this was just a one-off incident tanked. By the time our food arrived, our focus had been diverted to be on roach alert. Unfortunately, the food also missed the mark--overly salty and bland at the same time. None of this aligns with The Public I know and love, so I am really hoping this was just an off night. Might be taking a break from this place for a while.

The greeting from our arrival to seating was prompt and very courteous. We got suggestions from the wait staff and started our experience. They have an extensive cocktail and wine list. We started with a drink called Southern Hospitality and their branded Old Fashioned. Both drinks were exceptional. We accompanied that with Grilled Octopus, which was sensational. Very hard not to make it chewy. Great char and sauce that accompanied it. For entrees, we did the Perloo, an amazing interpretation, and a swordfish. Both dishes were immaculately prepared and perfectly sized. We chose a bottle of Loss and Lehn, something we had never tried before but recommended based on what we had ordered. It matched perfectly with both dishes. We also choose items from the pick 3 menu to accompany our entrees. We finished with the best bread Pudding we have ever had nd french press coffee. The price was very reasonable considering the quality and the service, and should not be missed next time you are in Savanah.

With my wife's gluten and dairy allergy, plus my tree nut allergy, Alpha-Gal, and diabetes, we're usually a decent stress test for a kitchen. Staff handled questions professionally and didn't make ordering feel complicated. Atmosphere strikes a nice balance--upscale enough for a date night or business dinner, but still relaxed and comfortable. Service was attentive without hovering.
