I wanted to figure out what all the hype was about over Cheddar's. Everyone I know goes there and I hadn't had the chance to try it yet, so with my Free Chips & Queso coupon, I ran over to Cheddar's to try it out. Given it was my first time at Cheddars, the waiter gave me a briefing over the menu and to tell me about how delicious their alcoholic beverages are. Of course I had to try one of these said alcoholic beverages and it was definitely my favorite part about my meal. We tried two appetizers; spinach dip & chips n queso - both were pretty good. For my meal, I got a club sandwich and soup and it was okay. Overall, the food was delicious but IMO I thought it was a tad bit overpriced especially for lunch. Went last weekend, ordered the chicken fried chicken. Chicken was good, very tinder, however it looked like they poured new gravy on top of old gravy and they left the plate out to sit under a heat lamp for like an hour. We had a wonderful lunch experience, our server was training, and did everything perfectly, her timing was impeccable with food and drink delivery. The chips and queso are a perfect starter. Yes, finally, the people at the corporate office did their research and opened a Cheddar's in the Northwest side of San Antonio near the UTSA and La Cantera area, a perfect market for this kind of restaurant. I've always considered myself a huge fan of Cheddar's ever since middle school and high school and I am excited to see they are expanding with more locations throughout Texas. The atmosphere and ambiance at Cheddar's is casual mixed with an upscale twist. As for the food, always delicious and always satisfying. My favorites have to be the Chicken Pot Pie and the Buffalo Style Chicken Tenders. The crust on the pot pie is perfect, it is the epitome of how a baked dough on a pot pie should be -- golden, buttery, moist, and flaky. The rue so rich and flavorful along with mixed white chicken and vegetables. The buffalo chicken tenders are perfectly coated and most importantly not drenched with hot sauce. Besides the white chicken being tender and moist, the batter on the chicken remains crisp and not not soggy after being lightly coated with the sauce. Pair these tenders with some cool ranch and I promise, it's perfection. Some noteworthy items that I always get would have to be the buttery and soft croissants and the cheesy and savory broccoli cheese casserole. Get these two items with any entree and it will only make your meal better. For the most part, I've always experienced a friendly staff and average to above-average service. read more

We didn't really mind waiting an hour and 15 minutes for a table because we were excited to visit with our family at a "nice" restaurant. We were finally seated... (at a filthy table) fries, crumbs, and who knows what else all over the floor... (this should have been clean before we were sat down, but wasn't cleaned for another 20 minutes). Our waiter came by and we ordered our drinks and appetizers. We waited about 20 minutes for our drinks and then ordered our entrees. We visited and waited.. and waited.. and waited.. and finally our food came. I guess you really do get what you pay for.. the portions are small but tasty.. Mind you we NEVER got our appetizers... so after our full 3 hour experience at Cheddars I was still hungry! I understand to an extent when problems happen. My latest visit to Cheddar's Casual Cafe was quite possibly the worst dining experience I've had in years. For what its worth I've never enjoyed eating at places like this, when I go to chain restaurants, my expectations are low to begin with, and this experience has set the bar so low they just laid it down on the floor. To start this horrendous tale, my party of seven sat in the lobby area and watched party after party get sat as we waited 54 minutes to be taken to our table. After every member of the management staff apologized to us we were told we were going to get two free appetizers and when our waitress finally came to the table we were informed that she chose them for us. So to receive the appetizers we actually wanted we had to pay for them anyway. Sadly, the appetizers were the highlight of our meal, our table had spinach dip, queso, onion rings, and croissants. I stepped away from the table, to use the restroom and upon my return I was greeted with a visually unpleasant presentation of a Chicken Fried Steak, the entire plate looked like a mound of white gravy. The batter to steak ratio was ludicrous. I cut into my batter four times before I got to the steak, and to make matters worse the steak and batter were awful. Both of my side items were at room temperature, which made me question if the kitchen is up to code. All said and done, the meal was taken off my ticket but was charged for one more appetizer than I received at this point I just wanted to get out of this place, we just paid and left. He never came by to refill our beverages. I had to flag down another waiter for a refill, and then our waiter came by a few minutes later with iced tea, rather than what I was drinking. I probably need to preface this review - The fact that they have a zillion things on their menu doesn't really excite me. I'd rather them make 10 things impeccably well than try and have something on the menu to suit everyone's most peculiar desires... It's relatively new, but we arrived at noon on a workday and they managed to seat our party of 2 in about 10 minutes (just as they promised). The waitress was training a new employee, but managed to provide pretty good service considering it was a lunch crowd. It's new, so when I asked what she thought of a few items on the menu, I got the "haven't tried that yet" - disappointing, but fair enough. We had onion rings as an appetizer (yeah, an appetizer for lunch is kinda overboard, and when it's fried, it's a good indicator it's been a long day already!). The onion rings have a flaky batter, but are cooked to a crisp (just as advertised). If you like onion rings, I'd recommend these. They're served with two dipping sauces, but neither were notable, so I resorted to my preferred condiment - catsup (or is it ketchup)... I ordered the cheeseburger (oddly NOT cheddar, even though you might think they'd leverage their namesake for the cheese variant). Compared to McDonald's, it was good. Compared to Chester's, Big's or Longhorn's, it sucked. The fries were okay - I'm sure they were poured directly from the Sysco Food Service package into the fryer. My buddy had the Shepherd's Pie. It looked okay, and that was his review as well. Paying ~$12 for "okay" isn't that "okay in my books. Like I said, I'm bias and prefer places that really have a specialty and take pride in making something really great instead of just making lots of stuff. Yes Cheddar's is a chain restaurant but I'm not going to pretend that it's not good because it is good. The menu has a lot of variety to it and I've tried almost every item listed and all have been home runs. Service is decent I would say 90% great which is about an A- or B+. I either dine at Cheddar's with my boyfriend or family so it's usually 2 people to 4 people so I never wait that long for a table. Sweet tea is always sweet and their strawberry lemonade is awesome with cute real strawberries in the drink. Alcoholic beverages are also a hit and everything comes out in a timely manner when ordering, depending on how packed the place is. Reasonable prices throughout the menu and I'm left satisfied with my visit. Ambiance aside, people come here to eat. We tried that, they where out of everything. No french fries, no salad. No this and no that. We finally landed on something they had, and when the waiter brought our food out, he informed us they were also out of our substitution sides. This was as he brought our entrees out mind you. Surely he was sorry, right? Nope. We also ordered an appetizer that was brought out a few minutes before most of our food. What we did get was horrible. It was bland, tasted frozen and reheated. Awful. We came us a group with 14 people and I completely understand the difficulty of large orders on a busy Sunday afternoon, but our service was despicable! FOOD: Everyone were having a good time, but 2 of the steaks weren't cooked as requested. Then, a salad order LITERALLY had a broken off piece of plastic in it! (FEW HOURS LATER) 4 people have really bad stomach aches. It's a franchise. How badly can you mess up on food with "dumbed-down" and fool proof written instructions? As for compensation, he took off the salad from the bill and offered only 3 slices of cake to 14 people... which never came fyi. To me, that's pretty stingy. It depends on what you get here. My husband got a chicken pot pie, which he said tasted bland and as though it had been microwaved, so not good. How nice would it be if they included additional gravy and maybe some homemade cranberry sauce? He was disappointed. However, I got a half rack of baby backs and salad with blue cheese dressing, the croissant roll (order the plain and bring your own butter if you don't like all that sugar). I will say that the "loaded baked potato," which is a baked potato with butter and sour cream, is NOT loaded. I expect also to have bacon and chives or chopped green onions! Sadly, no. The baby backs are awesome, as is the sauce. The service was good but not great. Just finished an early dinner here. The server was nonexistent. Food was pretty terrible considering. Ended up getting sick from the Cajun pasta, most likely because the meat was spoiled, it just didn't taste right (my fault for eating the whole thing and not returning it back). I didn't receive an itemized receipt so I'm sure I was overcharged as the costs of the items I ordered just don't add up to the amount I was charged (including tax). So we came here for a birthday party & brought a cake, which was apparently dropped while being stored in the back BUT the chef made us a big new one & the manager agreed to replace the dish it was on. It was delicious. The food was good too. Their light menu is pretty tasty. You HAVE to try the croissants. I had no idea that the bar area was really the break room. I went to dinner early enough that it was busy and one server went on break and she was joined by everyone else, not on break, and it got very crowded and loud very quickly. They didn't care that there were customers sitting next to them and the manager was sitting at the bar so clearly it was ok. They were even asked to scatter but 10 minutes later they were all back. Cheddar's has a very extensive menu that will appeal to a variety of tastes and it's all decently priced around the $15 price point, although there's a wide variety of things under that price point and some over it. The service is top-notch, just as an example, my friend ordered a drink that he ended up hating and the server noticed it just sitting there so he promptly ordered another drink for my friend and comped the one he didn't drink. Eh, it's alright. I used to love going there when they actually had a vegetarian option. Granted it was only one item, but the taste made up for it. The croissants are what really had me going back though, they were warm and flaky and tasted like they had a bit of honey. They were definitely to die for. The last time my friend and I went though, they had taken off the menu the only thing that they had for vegetarians. My daughter and I decided to use the gift card I got for my birthday and we were very impressed. Had the spinach dip appetizer to start off and it came with fresh salsa as well. My daughter loved her NOLA inspired pasta dish and although my order was not correct when it came out, they were quick to get my blackened salmon light fare out promptly. To top off the meal, we had the warm chocolate chip cookie with ice cream for dessert. So delicious and had a great time with my daughter. We will be going back soon. The service was horrible and the food was below par. I ordered the ribs and they came out dry. My baked potato was missing. I asked the waiter if all their ribs are like this. He said we can try and he would put in an order. The manager brought out the ribs and I was still missing my baked potato. I told him the ribs were still dry and over cooked. Apparently they were stored in their warmer for a long time. The manager only offered to remove the dish from the bill and acted like I was in the wrong.
