The store is clean, and well stocked in what they carry. The flow of the store is interesting. After entering into the provide section, you are routed around to the back and then there isn't any connecting pack back to the start of that section. Getting to the main place I want to be (the produce section) is difficult when they are close to closing, because the doors to that side are locked. You end up having to walk a backwards maze to get over there. Weird. Checkers is where you go to get produce. The produce is better here than the two closest grocery stores. This is a great discount grocery with bulk goods and generics. They've also got name-brand stuff, which sets them apart from other discount grocers like Aldi where your only option is no-name items. Checkers has decent produce as well as a large butcher section. You're not going to find gourmet or fine dining selections here, but that's okay. The prices are great. Service is good. It's a warehouse atmosphere, I'm okay with that if it helps keep prices down. read more

I usually shop at Price Chopper because it's a less of a drive from my house, it has the feel of an old-fashioned supermarket, and the employees are friendly. Although I've always appreciated Checkers, I rarely find myself here. Probably because I have to drive another mile from my house, hardly an inconvenience. So yesterday paid a visit there and was mentally jarred by the fact that I found a favorite sparkling water that's always in the refrigerator and a whopping $1 less per bottle than where I normally obtain it. Ouch. Wasn't even aware it was carried here. Then found a couple more items, made a stop at my usual destination solely to check prices. I've getting gouged for the same products. So, yea, the sort of somewhat underwhelming interior of the store, the bag your own groceries at checkout and no frills display--admit it, we shop with our eyes-- are there for a reason if you can go and save enough to fill up your tank with gas in a week. Actually, who drives anywhere these days? I go around town on the same tank for a month. I digress. Checkers is going to start getting more of my business in the future, for sure. Checkers is like a much larger local version of Aldi's. This is a good store and it is stocked with goodies. You never quite know what you will find from one visit to the next. Disclaimer: I like this store a great deal but I do not go here regularly. It is just not on my regular route and I hate to go out of my way to grocery shop. On the occasion when I do get to go to Checker's I have enjoyed it very much. There is a good selection of products and the prices are just right. Checkers has a very good produce department which is my main interest. There is a wide selection of fresh produce and it is all cared for very lovingly in the store. They also have a nice organic selection and health food section. There is no lack of products anywhere in the store. The best part about Checkers is that they have Champs chicken. It is so delicious. The deli department here is worth a special trip. Gosh, I am making myself very hungry thinking about that chicken. They have gizzards and livers if that is your thing (not mine, though). You won't find this type of deli anywhere else in town. Again, the prices are good and this seems to be a popular part of the store. Sometimes you have to hunt and find things on your own but it's not really a big deal. Checkers makes it easy to find things if you are in the right department. The one thing I do not like about Checkers is just a personal pet peeve When you enter the store, you have to go to the right through the produce department. You have no other option and, at times, it is an annoyance to me. There have been occasions when I needed just one or two things but was forced to go all the way around through produce just to get to the other side of the store. Again, it is a personal preference of mine. I love the prices, I love the selections and the fresh produce. The staff has always been very nice and helpful. I love shopping in the Asian food section. They have the best frozen dumplings here. I must not be the only one that thinks that because they seem to run out fast! Checkers is a Lawrence grocery treasure. At first blush, it might appear to be a nondescript grocery, but in reality its a great place for all of your needs. Checker's opts for a warehouse-style configuration with bare concrete floors and exposed roofing supports -- kinda like shopping for groceries in an Old Navy. Checker's serves a fair amount of Lawrence's student and foreign populations, and has a great and reasonably-priced produce section. Always plentiful amounts of what is in season -- green beans, Brussels sprouts, bundles of asparagus, fresh corn to shuck -- not to mention a variety of hot peppers, tomatillos, cactus leaves, jicama, and taro root. And the produce section also has selections of garden-fresh herbs. And organic produce. And, and, and.... The deli and cheese section has seen substantial improvement over the past couple of years and now offers a good selection of cheeses, as well as a bulk olive bar. The meat section carries a fine selection of beef, pork, and chicken, as well as a selection of fresh and frozen lamb. The frozen meats also include Halal quail and whole frozen duck. Checkers has an on-site bakery that prepares a great selection of fresh-baked breads and rolls. Because Checkers services some of Lawrence's Hispanic population, they also make pan dulce and tortillas and have a special section of Mexican food products. When it comes to canned and packaged foods, Checker's has very reasonable prices. Their store signage states that the twelve-packs of soda are $0.10 over invoice, and chips and snacks that are pre-priced are less than the price marked. In the last year, Checkers has also added a dedicated section of foods that are gluten-free, organic, and formulated for special diets. They also include a bulk section of nuts, rices, and, my favorite, steel-cut oats. Checker's also carries coffee from the Lawrence Coffee Roastery, one of the local coffee roasters. And, though I've been rare to take advantage of it, Checkers is open 24 hours. My husband and I just moved to town and heard this place had good deals. After checking all three, there are better prices at Aldi and HyVee. If you need something rare, this place has more selection but I was definitely disappointed price wise. Their milk is BY FAR the most expensive in town (for example). I'm giving Checkers three stars simply because it doesn't have a very broad selection of meats that aren't treated with antibiotics (not necessarily organic) and organic produce (either fresh or frozen). This could be a simple labeling issue, but I will say that I shop at other places more frequently than I would otherwise because of this issue. However, what they have is at a very affordable price point. And, they are locally owned and support locally produced goods as often as they can. This store brings back a bunch of memories for me as a child. The original site was a former Rustys IGA. My grandfather was the General Manager for Rusty and worked as GM for 50 years at several of the stores Rusty owned. My grandfather, Cecil Rogers hired Jim Lewis (Checkers Owner) when he was in college. Jim eventually bought the site and expanded the lot to build the store. Jim, Terry, Rita all worked for my grandfather and I went to work for Jim Lewis when I started college in Lawrence. I started as a cashier and quickly was promoted to the front end supv/cash office. Jim and Rita were to very special people. Both could be tough but it taught me eberything I know today about running a business. I enjoyed walking through the store today. The store hasn't changed much minus the old video rental section. Still the best produce and meat departments in town. Still the cleanest grocery store in town also. Sadly I didnt see Jim during my visit. I'm not sure if he still runs things on a daily basis but you can see his mark. I am sure I will make one more trip into town from the lake before we pack up the travel trailer. Maybe I can catch him the next trip. Rusty and my grandfather have been gone along time but they both would love seeing how well the store is thriving. Who says you cant compete against the big supermarkets. read more

All the best stuff is cheaper at Checkers...this is what the store advertises and it could not be more true. An excellent selection of produce, both from local growers and organic, as well as a great deli (with a wide variety of cheeses), and a bakery that makes tortillas (and other baked goods) in the store. The selection and quality of food is always top notch, and yeah, maybe it lacks a little in ambiance, but really, when I am at the grocery it is to shop, not soak up a great atmosphere. I'll take all the money I saved by shopping at Checkers and use it to hang out in my favorite restaurant or bar. They also participate in the Lawrence GiveBack program, where I get a percentage back on the groceries I buy and a percentage goes to my selected local charity---talk about a win win. read more

Ok, must admit that the tacky yellow and green exterior and the assumption that 'warehouse'-type shopping that would require me to purchase huge quantities (5# box of Total anyone? Anyone?) gave me a reason to avoid this store for a while. But I am so glad I took the plunge and stopped by Checkers Foods. Yes- it's a big warehouse with goods piled on top of pallets, but it also has name brand food for less than Dillons...and ( wait for it!) they support Lawrence Give Back. Gotta love supporting a local business that supports local nonprofits. Very low key place, real people, takes coupons, and encourages reusable bags. Go there: for good buys on frozen food, most pet foods, sodas, canned goods. Stick with : Farmer's Market for fresh veggies, fruits. Words I thought I'd never say: I love Checkers! I am guilty of judging a book by its cover. Large, warehousey grocery store couldn't possibly carry food worthy of my home. WRONG. I have lived in Lawrence three different times: once as a student and twice as a "grown-up." And only once had I deigned enter Checkers. I had no idea I was missing out on the best-run, largest-inventoried grocery store in town. Checkers has the best produce department in town, hands-down. The produce is fresher and consistently cheaper than other stores. They carry local stuff as much as possible, and the produce aisle is spotless and overflowing with fabulous fruit and veg. I continue to be surprised with the range of items Checkers carries. There are bulk non-perishables all the way through specialty items and an entire department of organic goods. I discover something new to me every time I'm there (it's a big store!). Most recently, I found locally farmed beef and pork, and local milk in glass jugs. Checkers is one of my favorite grocery stores ever! read more

First and foremost this place keeps it real. No fancy olive bar/cheese shop/floral department here, you can't scan your own groceries, and there's no fancy card for you to carry around. You bag your own stuff. You can get ribs cooked on a rotisserie, that you'll eat and say, "Like a boss!" Cigarettes are super cheap here and there's always insane deals on random stuff. My buddy Kevin will usually text me some deals he sees there saying, "Hey Jesus they got 6 packs of gatorade for 2.50", and I respond, "Checker's you're crazy for this one!" The produce is always better, the meat seems cut better especially the kc strips. That's important because I love meat. They have not a ton but a good selection of authentic mexican stuff which is surprising for Lawrence. All 7 of us here in lawrence get to buy the soda pops and votive candles our parents grew up with haha. Anyways check this place out it's 24 hours and is pretty legit. read more

After today, I may not be shopping at Checkers again. I really liked the gas reward program but didn't receive the credit today due to part of my purchase being beer. Their ad in the flyer did not say that alcohol was excluded but did say 'valid grocery purchase' and an asterisk saying to see the manager for details. I went to customer service and the manager said that alcohol was excluded and I wasn't given the option to purchase additional groceries. Great prices on all my grocery needs. LOVE the discount produce rack [by the olive bar] where today I got 5 ready to eat avocados and a nice tomato for $0.99! There is a discount bakery rack, dairy crate, and a cart of mark downs for bargain shoppers like me. Really like the local and Kansas products--Alma cheese, Marcon pies, popcorn and more. If you did not make it to a KU game, Checkers will have the live radio broadcast--again, I like the local touch. I use my Lawrence Give Back card every time. More variety than Dillon's and Wal-Mart. Better prices on produce and pretty much everything else, too. You bag yourself, which I both prefer and enjoy. Their ribs and pork butts n shoulders are fresher and without the injected crap that you get at the other two larger chains in town. Their Tomatillos are always fresh and plentiful. Garlic can be dry, but no better or worse than other chain stores in town. They no longer carry Blackburns butter pecan syrup. Nobody else does either. They DO still carry Earl Campbell sausages. Michael P's review is complete crap. The only points I can back you up on is the parking lot situation and that there's no self checkout. Most people don't seem to know who has the right of way in a parking lot which, in my opinion, they should be revoked their driver's license. And it would be nice to have self checkout, but by not having self checkout, it's keeping jobs for people. I remember seeing the owner on the commercials for Checkers years ago and he can still be found in the store today. Who cares what the store's colors are? Are you some effeminate interior designer? No, you're a grocery shopper, so get over it. To get from the produce to the check out is less than 2 minutes if you know the way to go. Besides, why would I really care about this anyway? If I want to stop in and get something, I'll go to a Walgreens. It's a larger store because there's more selection. And you mean to tell me that every single time you've gone, someone paid by check? Yeah. Right. Save the embellishment for when you're bragging about your bedside performance. From what I can gather, spending more money to save 60 seconds and having a nicer color scheme seems to be the deciding factors in providing for family. Have fun with that. read more

I love Checkers. Love it. I moved and miss it terribly. I thought I'd found a replacement where I live now, but no. Not even remotely close. Checkers has excellent produce, but the meat department was ok. The variety of locally produced items (sausages, pasta sauce, salsa, etc.) was great. I loved trying out new local foodstuffs. They also try to buy local produce as well. They also play some great music! I love the 50's and 60's music they play a lot of the time. You can also find times when it isn't super busy to just bee-bop around and spend time pouring over your choices. Checkers is the best. read more

This is Lawrence's best grocery store. I'm a regular, & practically on a first name basis with the late-night cashier. My husband makes elaborate meals & he can almost always find what he wants here. Aside from regular grocery shopping, I really like Checkers for food gifts. I've put together really great local barbecue & local Mexican food gift baskets (complete with chocolate) thanks to Checkers. Food selection & price: 5 stars for Woohoo Cleaners/paper goods/household goods selection & price: 3.5 stars for A-OK plus Customer service: 5 stars Cleanliness & Layout: 5 stars Hours: 10 stars for Woohoo times 2 Outside sign & facade: 2 stars for Meh (Time to update!) Good: Produce (sometimes great), Good (approaching great) selection of local/regional products, Mediterranean, East Asian, & Mexican/Latin food selection, Coffee & tea selection, to a lesser extent, other "ethnic" food can be found (i.e. Jewish) Great: Overall selection, Olive bar, Ice cream selection, Barbecue sauces & condiment selection, Vegetarian food, Clean, Easy layout, 24 hours, One-stop shopping for food & household basics, Locally owned I'm super happy they now carry MarCon pies (the best pies in the world, check by the dairy section). I have literally lived all over the world, and have been back to Lawrence to live three times, and I can say that Checkers has THE best produce in town (as some local restaurants where their produce comes from!), and also the best prices on the produce. To me, the produce is the most important part of my shopping becuase veggies are what we plan our meals around. That said, they do have great prices on a lot of meats and the recent store facelift certainly helped it along with the addition of the natural and bulk grains section - However, to get 5 stars, Checkers can do just a bit better. I shop at their competitors to get good prices on bulk (5 lb) packages of 'fresh' boneless skinless chicken breasts (not the flash frozen kinds that you get in bags in the freezer section), low sodium deli turkey and ham, free-range, organic, omega-added eggs, greek yogurt in 32 oz containers and 1% organic milk, which is not something that Checkers carries (they carry whole & 2% milk, but not 1%). These are items that are constantly sold out at their competitors - so I know it would be worth their shelf space to carry them. Also, their dairy prices are not as competitive as they could be. If Checkers would step up their deli, carry bulk fresh chicken breasts and carry more of a selection on organic dairy (including eggs), it would be perfection. If you are the type of person that wants one-stop or posh shopping, this may not be the place fore you - I am aware that their bakery and floral sections leave a bit to be desired. They don't have a cafe and I don't even know if they have a pharmacy, to tell you the truth. But what they do, they do VERY well and I would rather that they keep doing what they are good at than end up a watered down version of one of their competitors. And all of the 'nice' things that one might encounter at another store will just drive Checker's prices up. I am not looking for a manicure and espresso while I shop for bananas and chicken - I just want great quality and good prices. Also, I noticed that they posted a sign that you can shop online with them via www.ziles.net and arrange for a time to pick up your groceries - What a great service! Especially if you work a lot, have kids or are sick and just don't want to schlep around the store spreading germs. I will definitely be checking that out. Checkers is pretty much the only place I buy groceries in Lawrene. They probably have the freshest meats and produce in the city, and it always costs less and lasts longer than produce from other grocers in town. They have a large organic and local foods sections, as well as various cultural/internation foods. They also offer name brands as well as generic brands. This place is ALWAYS extremely busy. Seriously, the parking lot and isles of the store are always packed, because so many people shop here. I give Checkers four stars. read more

I have been shopping at checkers for over 20 years with nothing but good things to say. BUT within the last 2 months I have rcvd a box of best choice mac and cheese that had bugs in it. Then this weekend I bought a jar of olives that was in the reduced rack that has the banged up can goods and boxes. Later that night my husband ate a bunch of the olives and got deathly ill. We ate same things except I didn't eat the olives. I checked those. they were expired on July 2, 2011. this is November 10, 2012. Over year and half expired. Worse part is I took them to mgr attn and he said would have to do some research and see when these olives were delivered. Bottom line is even if just delivered last week they shouldn't of put out to be purchased if 1.5 years expired. And if they had them a year and half ago why are they still there to be purchased. They did offer to refund me, but with being a loyal weekly customer for 20 yrs they should of given me a $10 food certificate to cover the extra trip to the store and the illness they put my husband through. Bottom line, no more checkers for this family. There are too many other stores in Lawrence that would appreciate their customers. read more
