Meat me at this butcher shop for some awesome food. lol. I had wanted to go to this shop for some time now so the other day I just made it happen. I do not eat a great deal of meat but when I do... I want quality. I was ill prepared for the wonderful experience that awaited me. The person that helped me, Brian, was terrific. He was super knowledgeable about products, preparation and taste. He even steered me away from higher priced items for lower priced things he thought I would like better. He was thorough and patient with my endless questions. He is very well suited to his job. They have all sorts of items in this quaint shop. They have cheese, jams, jellies, bread, eggs, kitchen equipment. From outside the shop, it does not appear to be very large inside and it isn't necessarily large.. just well packaged. The meat selection is vast... beef, pork, buffalo, chicken, lamb.... in every configuration you can imagine. They have steaks, ground meat, jerky. I learned so much just talking to Brian. There is ample parking and this store is located in a strip mall so there is easy access. Everything is sparkling clean and has a very nice atmosphere about the shop. Tremendously impressed with this gem of a shop. read more

Just discovered this little meat market a few days ago and I've already been back again. I'm planning to shop here weekly. Amazing quality at prices that are similar to grocery stores. We feel so good about feeding these foods to our toddler! Bought and loved: Meat sticks (teriyaki flavor especially), farm fresh eggs, breakfast sausage, fresh bread, churned butter, apple butter. Bought and excited to try: Ground beef, chicken breasts, bacon, hot dogs. Brian has a lot of patience for me and a lot of great, thoughtful recommendations! read more

Amazing customer service. Super friendly. Great quality meats. Nice vibe. I don't know who helped me but I went in looking for pork belly and they didn't have any thawed or small enough for what I was looking for. He thawed some and cut a portion for me to pick up later that day. He also remembered I was making ramen and told me about other things they have (like marrow bones) when I went back. It's been a long time since I've had that positive of an experience at any store of any kind. read more

New butcher shop in Lawrence located in this little strip mall that as strip malls go in town is doing OK. Newly opened, owner knows his stuff... or meat to be more exact. If you're needing it and he doesn't have it, he'll try to get it. Have my order in for beef bones for making bone broth and demi-glace. Picked up a nice rolled roast that looks like a million bucks, some beef jerky and sausage sticks (for the hiker/backpacker guy in me) and some granola made locally. If you're needing goat, lamb, chicken, duck, beef, pork, he has it in many different configurations. I'm digging this place right now and he'll be getting my return business. Nice chap to boot as well. Enjoyed talking to him. Rare that a city this size gets someone with this kind of knowledge that opens their own business. With the demise of Hank Charcuterie from a butcher shop to restaurant to soon-to-move-onto-better-things in KC, a welcome addition to the city's food scene. read more

This is what I posted on Facebook... "For all of my Lawrence friends: I recently did one of my six-course dinners. The meat course featured a filet that was cold-smoked, then broiled and pan seared and finished with a torch. Served medium rare on Italian bread with a red wine pan sauce with shallots. Bottom line, the meat was from Heartland Meat Market at 1410 Kasold. If you have not tried it, I highly recommend it. Bryan was terrifically helpful. He even cold smoked the filet for me. I've been wishing for a butcher and meat market in Lawrence. I stopped in to check out the market since reading a couple reviews. Location not bad and assessable. Though small, there's a good selection of cuts and meats. Brian and I talked for a good bit. The meats are from Kansas ranches/farms. I didn't have a particular recipe but stepped out with meat stick and german sausages for Sunday dinner. I encourage Lawrence foodies and home cooks to check it out! read more

Make sure you call ahead, as in way ahead. And then keep calling. I called four days ago about a brisket for Christmas, was told to call back today because that's delivery day. I called 3 min after opening today and was told they're all sold out. "They sold yesterday." I mentioned that I was told to call him back today, and his response? "Well, I didn't think they'd all sell. Sorry." Thanks a ton, man. Glad you're selling out - it won't be to me any time soon. read more

Worst customer service ever! Not once but twice, was even hung up on by the gentleman We gave it another chance again today after calling last week and he was extremely rude as well, we thought it's stressful times for business owner we totally understand being business owners ourselves and maybe he was just having a bad day.... well apparently that stick is permanently stuck up there because today he actually hung up on us! We will NEVER shop at this place and would never recommend it either based on how rude we were treated twice! read more

Was looking all over town for pork belly to make chashu. Someone suggested the Community Mercantile. Encouraged, I went to the Merc and person at meat counter said: "We usually carry some but need the room for holiday turkeys, try later." Only suggestion on locating some was: "try Kansas City". Saw article in JW about new Heartland meat market and gave them a try. I now have 11 lbs of local pork belly for chashu and other interesting preparations. I look forward to trying more of their offerings. read more

I was in search for some bone in chicken for a 300 year old fried chicken recipe I found on line. I could only find bone in Legs, thighs and wings and wanted breast. My husband suggested I call Heartland Meat Market. WOW!!! So glad I called. We bought a fresh fryer that he cut up for us while we waited. Now I am hooked on this place. I haven't had chicken this fresh since I was a child back in the 60's. The chicken even felt different to the touch. So fresh, clean and natural. You could tell that it wasn't injected with hormones and other additives. It was so delicious!!! We also bought some frozen ground beef that I plan to put in my spaghetti sauce and looking forward to trying their cheeses and other meats. It's truly amazing how both my husband and I felt after we ate the chicken. We didn't feel bloated or stuffed. Just satisfied! It was a different feeling in comparison to the grocery store chicken we usually buy. We highly recommend Heartland Meat Market. There is absolutely a difference in healthier processed meat. read more
